Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population. The Darling Plateau is old, having been formed some 200 million years ago, and its soils are deeply weathered. The parent materials were granite and gneis which have broken down to form lateritic gravels, overlying dense kaolinitic clays. Some 30 million years ago, in the Tertiary period, a sub - tropical climate prevailed. Appropriate conditions of moisture, temperature and drainage led to extensive laterisation. Some of the laterite contains bauxite of mineable quality. Some 1.9 million hectares of the south-west of Western Australia is covered by eucalypt forests. Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of fuzzy logic control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC of heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be developed using statistical process control (SPC) techniques that are first applied offline in manual mode through the use of control charts. This process is then brought on line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to automate the circuit. The advent of programmable logic controllers into preparation plants has enabled the implementation of regulatory control. As shown in Fig. 1, regulatory control is the first level of process control as applied in a processing facility. This involves: ? The logic sequences for start-up and shutdown procedures and all the necessary interlocks for safety purposes. ? The systems to control individual parameters and individual units. Various sensors provide information that is useful to plant operators, while some can be used as signals to simple control loops (Couch, 1996). This is the foundation of process control. It must be performed well if there is to be any success in supervisory control (level 2). Supervisory control involves overseeing and directing the operation of unit operations, or of the whole plant. This includes more complex loops with cascade control. And it may involve feed forward and feedback systems. There have been some applications of this kind of control to thickeners and flotation circuits in coal preparation plants. In addition, there are supervisory controls on some dense medium circuits and, in a few cases, on jigs. These are implemented with proportional integral- derivative (PID) controllers that are available in the PLC or distributed control system (DCS) operating soft ware. In a coal preparation plant, there might exist 200 to 400 PID loops. In a coal-pro¬cessing plant, this number is increased to 2,000 loops or more. It is important to use the correct algorithm or function to control a process variable to the point where automatic control shows a markedly decreased variability over manual mode. This is where fuzzy logic and neural networks have an advantage over traditional model-based expert systems. Because dynamic models of coal preparation unit operations do not exist, model-based expert systems that are prevalent in minerals processing cannot work. Not enough is known about the dynamics of the gravity separation processes employed in coal preparation. Therefore, an artificial intelligence (AI) system consisting of a subset of fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and neural networks must be applied in coal preparation plants if a supervisory control system is to be successful across a range of feed characteristics and variable set points.

The Pit Lake at Island Copper has evolved into a 3-layered meromictic system. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is collected and injected into the lake at 220 m depth via 2 diffuser systems. In situ dye studies were conducted during 2 differing hydrological regimes in order to determine the behavior of the ARD plume within the Pit Lake. Results indicated that when runoff from the waste dumps was low, the injected ARD remained within the bottom half of the intermediate layer of the Pit Lake, initially below depths of 90 m. However, when runoff from the waste dumps was high, the injected ARD at -220 m depth rose through the intermediate water column layer rapidly, but did not breach the top pycnocline at -10 m depth. Overall, the system is currently performing as a mixing bowl with a strong boundary or cap at the upper pycnocline. maintaining mixing below the 10 m depth water level.

The term "rare earths" is used to designate a group of elements, Numbers 57-71 which are closely related chemically. They were called "earths" because their oxides resemble those of the alkaline earths, and the designation "rare" was originally applied because of their scarcity. Now many of these elements are known to exist in considerable quantities, and the term "Lanthanide" is applied to this group of elements, because of their similarities to lanthanum, the first element in the group. Many authorities insist on including yttrium, element Number 39, because of its extremely close association with the members of the group in nature and because of its similarity in chemical properties. It has been estimated that the combined rare earth group makes up about five-thousandth. of one percent of the Earth's crust, a higher percent than the common elements, lead, tin, zinc, arsenic, mercury, silver and gold. Cerium is by far the most abundant member comprising about half of the total amount. Yttrium, neodymium, and lanthanum are next in order; samarium, gadolinium, praseodymium, dysprosium, erbium, holmium, and ytterbium are increasingly scarce; while the elements lutetium, thulium, terbium, and europium are extremely rare. The rare earths as a group are metals, usually trivalent, forming basic oxides, and insoluble oxalates in dilute mineral acids. Their fluorides are also difficultly soluble; hence the rare earths or lanthanides may be separated, in general, from other elements by adding oxalic or hydrofluoric acid to a dilute mineral acid solution containing them. The most striking fact which characterizes these elements is the remarkable .similarity in both the physical and chemical properties of their compounds. Their main differences are in the solubilities of their salts and the basicity of their oxides, which vary between that of the alkaline earths and that of aluminum.

Reconciliation of production information is critical to evaluating the effectiveness of predictive models that would allow for the optimization of mining operations. Whether mining open pit or underground, mine-to-mill reconciliations can be one of management's better tools for the performance of proper accounting. Such reconciliations can also be a very useful tool in evaluation and optimization. This paper proposes a set of criteria and objectives for a typical reconciliation program. This paper also presents a stepwise, logical approach to performing reconciliations and discusses the benefits associated maintaining good information. It also highlights some of the potential pitfalls involved and the methods used to avoid collecting misleading information. These issues are illustrated with an example of a model-to-mine-to-mill reconciliation program that is being implemented at an operating mine. The program involves multiple predictive models (long-term and short-term block models), feed from three open pits and one underground mine, in addition to intermediate stockpiling, for a total of 23 mill streams. This paper presents a summarized version of this reconciliation program and its initial results as implemented at Minera Michilla S.A.

Existing models proposed for the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides generally fail to predict solubilization rates at times greater than a few tens of hours. The reasons for this may be that these models are empirically based and use first order bacterial and chemical oxidation rates. This type of model is satisfactory for short time predictions (on the order of 20 hours) when the bacterially catalyzed dissolution is relatively minor. However, when bacterial action becomes more pronounced, these models consistently predict higher dissolution rates than those commonly observed in laboratory experiments. The present model uses several fundamental chemically and biologically based assumptions to predict the dissolution rate of a chalcopyrite concentrate for extended leach times up to the precipitation of jarosite. The main assumptions made are that Monod growth kinetics prevail, T. ferrooxidans adsorb onto the surface of the mineral (not necessarily mineral specific), and that during periods of high growth oxygen transport may become rate limiting. The model also relies on the energy efficiency of the bacteria in fixing carbon (growth yield) and correlates this value with available surface area of the mineral particles and the bacterial growth rate.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

SOLA-DM is a three-dimensional finite-difference computer code designed to model the dynamics of an incompressible fluid and the transport of discrete particulate material around obstacles impervious to flow. The numerical methods used in this code are described. SOLA-DM was used to predict the particle flux sampled by the 10-mm Dorr-Oliver Cyclone and MINIRAM dust monitors. Various geometric and dynamic variations of monitor and airflow combinations were tested. The code predictions are shown in computer-generated graphic plots.

Outcrops of the Nubian Sandstone Series cover approximately 180,000 km2 in southern Egypt. Within the series, oolitic iron ore beds occur. The only comprehensive information available on stratigraphy of the iron beds is for the area east of Aswan, otherwise information is exiguous, sparse or unreliable. Based on this low level of information, the iron potential of the Nubian Sandstone Series was assessed and an exploration strategy formulated specifically tailored to the assessment. The area covered by the Nubian was divided into five regions, each comprised of 100 cells. A spatial distribution, i.e. negative binomial, was assumed adequate to describe the number of targets per cell and was indirectly calculated using a compound poisson distribution. Estimate of the only unknown parameter - the average number of targets per cell - implicitly/explicitly incorporated available geologic and economic information into the assessment. A probability distribution for the number of targets per region was then derived from the cell probability distribution. An allocation model based on the regional probability distribution assessment as well as on an estimate of the exploration effectiveness and on the exploration budget determines the optimal time to be spent in each region.

With the aid of molecular orbital theory, a discussion is presented of the relationship between the electronic structures of ions and molecules, and the elementary steps involved in homogeneous electron transfer reactions. An electronic theory of the reactivity of oxidants and the mechanism of action of oxidation catalysts is then presented, with emphasis on the oxidative decomposition of metal sulfides. For model oxidants, two molecular reagents: O2 and Cl2, and two ionic reagents: Fe3+ and CU2+ were selected; silver (1) was chosen as the model catalyst. The reactivities of these reagents are rationalized in terms of constraints on orbital overlap, the availability of unoccupied d orbitals, and the rearrangement of electronic configurations.

Until its closure in 1999, the Antler was North America's only active chlorite mine. The mine is located 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Butte in the Silver Star district - an old Montana gold mining district. In 1975, two prospectors searching for talc re-examined a prospect showing a green, fine-grained mineral resembling talc. Following identification and testing of this magnesian chlorite (variety clinochlore), Cyprus Industrial Minerals began processing ore from this deposit in 1976. Chlorite veins ranging up to 30 feet (9 m) in thickness were formed by essentially complete replacement of Precambrian (Archean?) quartzofeldspathic gneiss. Chlorite replacement was controlled by near- vertical faults. These chlorite veins, typically surrounded by envelopes of sericitic alteration, were formed by the introduction of magnesium-rich hydrothermal fluids, probably related to the Proterozoic talc-forming event in southwestern Montana. Luzenac America, Inc. acquired Cyprus' talc operations in 1992, and continued to mine this deposit until the ore body was mined out in March 1999, and the mine was reclaimed. Total sorted ore production from this deposit is about 250,000 short tons (st) (227,000 metric tons [mt]). Chlorite from this deposit was primarily used in ceramic and paint applications.

Risk of hand injury is very real for operators carrying out conventional bolting operations with power torque tools, reaction arms and backup wrenches. Bolting operations of this type are common today in the installation and maintenance of heavy mining machinery and equipment. Newer solutions have become available that have the potential to dramatically reduce the risk of hand injuries in mining applications. MINING APPLICATIONS Within the scope of mining operations, various types of equipment are used such as tunnel boring machines, bucket wheel excavators, draglines, material handlers, screens, pumps, crushers, continuous miners and longwall systems. Design of these machines typically includes larger diameter bolts for strength and durability. Due to rugged use all machines require frequent maintenance and service which requires the use of heavy industrial bolting tools and methods. Those engaged in bolting operations include technicians working for end-users, equipment manufacturers, general contractors and others who provide services in mining operations. Most all personnel involved with these activities are engaged with use of high power bolting tools and procedures. Training is essential to raise the awareness of bolting safety and to avoid accidents. However improved bolting tools and procedures can play an even more significant role in further improving the safety of all those engaged with bolting in the mining industry. SAFETY CONCERNS Professionals working in the mining industry are constantly looking for ways to further reduce risk to health and safety. Bolting operations which are fundamental to service and maintenance of mining equipment are often overlooked as a potential area for improvement. Several areas of bolting operations offer potential for improvement in safety and avoiding accidents during equipment maintenance. This paper addresses the safety concerns associated with reaction arms and backup wrenches in conventional bolting applications (Figure 1).

Very fine wet sizing of minerals such as kaolin, precipitated calcium carbonate, lime milk, and clay slip is a difficult process to achieve using standard vibrating screens. With particle sizes ranging in the sub-microns combined with the agglomerating tendencies of certain materials, screen blinding becomes a serious issue. Sizetec, Inc. has developed an innovative screening equipment to help solve this problem. The High Performer Screen uses powerful linear vibrations to help break apart agglomerated particles and prevent screen blinding. Optionally fitted with the Air Explosion Screen Cleaning System, compressed air can be periodically injected into the screen underflow chamber to clean the screen surface without the use of water sprays. This paper highlights some of the key features of the Sizetec High Performer Screen and describes typical performance that can be expected based on results from various trials conducted in the kaolin industries.

Increasing capacity of bulk material handling systems creates difficult problems for accurate in-line material weight measurements. At the same time increasing system complexity and growing user demands call for more measurements. Precision in-line weight measurements for bulk materials are usually accomplished by application of conveyor belt scales. Belt scale accuracies listed by scale vendors are applicable for ideal situations with suitable conveyor design, belt scale location and calibration means. This paper attempts to provide designers and users with simple means to evaluate belt scale accuracy for practical scale installations. Based on known mathematical models simplified formulas for measurement errors are derived and discussed. These formulas allow for simple determination of achievable accuracy for alternative scale installations on the conveyor, conveyor designs, etc.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

Predictive maintenance technologies include vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection and electrical measurements. These technologies have been applied to large electric mining shovels at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine outside of Tucson, AZ. The predictive maintenance program was initiated on the P&H models 2300 and 4100 electric shovels during August 1996. Results of these technologies have shown the potential for improving electric min- ing shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition-based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition-based prioritization.

Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of entirely new high-performance automated transportation systems? Good Question! While there has been some revolutionary new thinking and product testing in mining, none has taken place in transportation of ore and waste. With one notable exception - DASHAVEYOR - not a single really new and 'unconventional' system has even been tried on a small scale in the hardrock mines in our country. Admittedly, U.S. equipment manufacturers share the responsibility for the slow progress in mine transportation systems in our country, since they have provided very litte leadership in design innovation or education. First, let me give you my definition of what is meant by the term "Advanced Transportation Systems". Then I will describe and compare such systems, emphasizing the strong and weak features of each as they apply to vertical and horizontal haulage. I will conclude by establishing the principal requirements for implementation of these types of systems in the mining industry in the United States.

HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation.
