Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10 km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal orebody, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralization has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been subdivided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 potholefacies, FW3 pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralization. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralization located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the orebody. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situ grades estimated as an input to the mine planning process.

Valuators of mineral properties are faced with a range of valuation methodologies, the most important of which are grouped under the headings of the market approach, the cost approach and the income approach. The way in which value is defined and the detail of the different valuation methodologies is examined here. This paper aims at documenting the variety of valuation procedures and applying each method to a variety of gold projects and comparing the outcomes. Any decision to apply a valuation technique will depend principally on the stage to which the project has been developed. The valuation approach to a greenfield project will be substantially different from that applied to a well-drilled, extensively explored mineral property. Furthermore, a valuation exercise may produce different outcomes for the same gold project depending on which method is applied. In order to investigate the variability in valuation methods and to explore the outcomes of different approaches, a series of five gold projects was analysed. The projects differ in regard to levels of capital application, infrastructural setting, depth below surface, in situ grade, and the stage of development, and were valued using the different methods. The most critical aspect of any valuation is the capacity of the valuer to identify the salient issues and ensure that they are incorporated into the valuation. The danger of simply applying ?black box? solutions to valuation problems without a full understanding of the parameters and the areas of uncertainty is emphasized. The importance of the valuator?s experience, insights into best practice and the ability to recognize and submit to the requirements of compliance within the minerals industry is among the most important characteristics of a valuer.

In this paper the origins of the mortar intruded concrete concept and its development and application in the construction of watertight bulkheads in South Africa are described. The events leading to the commissioning and execution of the West Driefontein Experimental Plug and the Virginia/Merriespruit Boundary Plugs, and their roles in the proving of the technique, follow. The development of the first Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines Code of Practice for Mortar Intrusion Concrete for Underground Plugs and Bulkheads, Johannesburg, November 1962,is explained. The saga of the October 1968 flood and subsequent salvage of the West Driefontein Gold Mine is recounted. The paper concludes with mention of the validation programme carried out for the Placer Dome Western Areas Joint Venture and their South Deep water barrier programme.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX, indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and alack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for the low PGM recoveries experienced. Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

The current global economic climate has adversely affected the resources industry in general. For the gold mining industry, even though the gold price has been stable as compared to other resources, there is still a need to cut costs even further in order to be profitable and sustainable. Of all the costs that are associated with mining, comminution of ore accounts for the majority. Comminution costs constitute mainly electricity, grinding balls and liners. Of these three components, grinding balls form the major portion of the consumable costs, and can be as high as 40%?45% of the total. As a result, proper grinding ball selection is a key consideration towards reducing mining costs. This paper discusses quality control procedures that can be conducted in order to select the best grinding balls for a particular application. Mining up to depths of 5 000 m would be a world first and, accordingly, no previous experience in the determination of acceptable heat stress limits, criteria or indices is wholly applicable. However, some South African gold mines are already operating at depths beyond 3000 m and much of the knowledge gained in reaching and working at such depths will be helpful in making adequate provision for acceptable environmental control at the greater depths being contemplated. Accordingly, it is necessary to take cognisance of the industry?s experience in deep-level mining and of standards and regulations already established in South Africa and elsewhere in order to ensure acceptable working conditions and control standards, that compare favourably and defensibly with those in other mining industries. The local and international use of heat stress limits, criteria and indices were investigated as it was necessary to determine to what extent any other indices, limits or criteria would be applicable to South African deep mine conditions. In addition, it was necessary to establish whether there was a single heat stress index that could be used for South African ultra deep mining conditions. It was found that an appropriate combination of heat stress indices would be required in planning for and ultimately controlling thermal conditions in ultra-deep mining. The depths being contemplated and the concomitant potential heat hazard present too great a risk for reliance on a single environmental component of heat stress, such as wet-bulb temperature at present in common use locally. The study recommends that a heat stress index, preferably Air Cooling Power (ACP), be used to design an ultra deep mine?s ventilation system and that wet-bulb temperature be used to monitor and control the system once it is implemented.

Static dissolution of CaO into a CaO-SiO2-Al2O3slag and slags with additional fluxing agents (fluorspar, nepheline syenite and ilmenite) was studied. The slag was packed into dense CaO crucibles and heated to 1500ºC /1600ºC. After reaction, the crucible was air cooled and cross-sectioned. The development of the Ca2SiO4 phase and concentration profiles of various cations across the reaction zone were examined by Electron Probe Micro Analysis. At 1500ºC, a Ca2SiO4layer was found to form at the CaO/slag interface. No such layer was evident at 1600ºC. Ilmenite and nepheline syenite were found to be effective substitutes for fluorspar, increasing the rate of CaO dissolution.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. Billiton Process Research has carried out extensive research over the past four years to develop new process technology using bioleaching for extraction of copper and nickel from their sulphide concentrates. Continuous pilot scale and laboratory batch testwork has been carried out with adapted mesophile bacterial cultures at40°C?45°C, moderate thermophile cultures at 50°C?55°C and thermophile cultures at 65°C?85°C. Pilot scale work has demonstrated the commercial viability of mesophile cultures for bioleaching of secondary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates. Moderate thermophiles offer benefits in terms of reduced cooling requirements for commercial reactors and, in the case of bioleaching of nickel concentrates, some selectivity over bioleaching of pyrite. Continuous pilot scale testwork has shown that thermophiles achieve efficient bioleaching of primary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates, giving much higher recoveries than achieved by bioleaching with a mesophile or moderate thermophile culture.

The hydrodynamics of a hydrocyclone present a complex internal flow structure, the numerical simulation of which remains a non-trivial task. We report on three-dimensional water-only computational fluid dynamics (CFD) hydrocyclone flow field predictions and highlight some of the issues concerned with the development of a CFD model incorporating an air core. The potential for the application of CFD as a hydrocyclone design tool is also discussed. Physically realistic velocity profile predictions were obtained, which challenge the classical account of the hydrocyclone radial particle classification mechanism. Bacterial leaching represents an unusual problem in biochemical engineering, because the substrate for bacterial growth is not supplied directly, but is a product of another reaction, the leaching of mineral particles. Leaching arises from the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions, which in turn oxidize the mineral. For the bacterial dissolution of pyrite, these reactions are: [ ] (Y represents a stoichiometric yield factor, and N represents the amount of bacteria.) Equations [1] and [2] represent a cyclic auto-catalytic system since more ferric ions are added to the system with an increase in the extent of leaching.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. There are few data on the composition of discard coal in South Africa, and no overall view of the discards for the entire industry. As a result of work on coal qualities in South Africa, a database was established which enabled a good estimate to be made of the composition of the discard from every mine. The data are presented in the form of histograms of ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon content of the 43 million tons of material which were discarded in 1990. The results are discussed in terms of the closeness of the composition of much of the discard material to presently used power station coal. It is concluded that it is mainly developments in equipment, particularly fluidized bed boilers, which inhibit the wider use of discard coal. However, other factors must be noted, including the relatively high sulphur content of the discards, and the fact that even with the most careful storage the material ages and may become unusable after about 15 years.

Traditionally, dithiocarbonates (xanthates) have been the preferred collectors for the flotation of platinum-bearing sulphides. However, collector development has led to trithiocarbonates (TTC), which have proven to be very effective bulk sulphide collectors. The interest in TTC flotation behaviour is currently focused on the interaction of these collectors with other collectors, specifically the dithicarbonates. Batch-flotation research has shown synergism to exist among dithiocarbonate, dithiophosphate and trithiocarbonate collectors. Increased sulphide recoveries, both for the first-minute and final concentrate, were realized using mixtures of these collectors relative to the standard.
