This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation. The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

Descriptions are given of the techniques and apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines for determinations of flat plate ignition quenching distance and minimum spark ignition energy. The descriptions include discussions of reaction vessel materials, shapes, and sizes and discussions of electrode configurations. Spherical, hemispherical, or flat plate electrodes are recommended. The preferred metal in electrodes and electrode supports is stainless steel; the flat plate electrodes incorporate flanges of low electrical conductivity which are most frequently formed from glass. Various aspects of the electrical energy supply system are discussed and suitable arrangements of components are indicated. The concept of a thermal relaxation time is introduced as a basis for the choice of a minimum interspark time during the testing of a gas mixture. The following indicate the varied conditions under which these tech were utilized: Mixture pressures between 10 mm Hg and 45 psig, initial temperatures between -78° and +198° C, and gaseous mixtures representing wide ranges of cL.. D reactivity and corrosiveness. Minimum ignition energies were determined which varied from about 10-7 joule to nearly 103 joule.

This report describes Bureau of Mines research to develop methods to evaluate loading on longwall roof supports to permit better design and more efficient utilization of these structures in compliance with the geological conditions in which they are employed. The resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy of a shield can be determined, either from a statically determinate solution assuming rigid-body mechanics and elimination of certain unknowns, or from an elastic solu-tion by analysis of the load-displacement relationship of the shield structure. A two-dimensional rigid-body model is presented that determines resultant shield forces by measurement of leg, canopy capsule, and lemniscate link forces. An elastic solution is presented, in the form of an elastic stiffness model with two degrees of freedom, which describes the load-displacement relationship from the stiffness of the shield structure as determined in the Bureau's Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). The ability of both models to determine resultant forces acting on the shield canopy are evaluated from full-scale tests in the MRS. More advanced numerical models are also discussed as part of the Bureau's continuing effort in the evaluation of roof support structures.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the status of a laser-based guidance system to provide position and heading feedback and closed-loop control of tramming maneuvers for a continuous mining machine. The system has been developed and tested at the Bureau, and is now being prepared for underground experiments. The system hardware includes laser scanners, a sensor communication network, and host computer hardware. The system software includes a position and heading computation module and a tram control module. The description of the software includes discussions of laser data acquisition, error compensation methods, position and heading determination, safety checking for continuous miner tramming, and closed-loop tram control. The accuracy of the laser scanner's data, the reliability of the lasers in a dusty environment, and the system's accuracy on tracking the position and heading of the continuous mining machine are shown in the results of experiments performed at the Bureau. Conclusions are stated based on these experimental results, and further work to improve the system performance and prepare for underground testing is discussed.

"This report is () expansive test program by the Bureau of Mines to determine methods from various and ferrous manganese-grade product () widespread () and manfniferrous iron ores. Among the samples received for testing was one from the pits of the Barytes Mining Co., 1-1/ 2 miles northeast of Cartersville, Ga.. The property is approximately in the center of the Cartersville manganese district and shares a common corner with properties of the New Riverside Ochre Co. and the Etowah Development Co., both producers of manganifereus ores. The deposit is typical of the district and occurs in residual clays resulting from weathering of the Shady limestone and Weisner quartzite. 7/The property is developed by a number of open pits ranging to 60 feet in depth. In 1918 several carloads of manganiferous iron ore was mined from an alit on the property. Since then mining operations have been negligible. The ore is known locally as calico ore.A 4-ton sample representing -re as it occurs in the -pen pits vas furnished for testing. The sample consisted of a mixture of red iron oxides, wad, and clay, with small pebbles of manganese oxides and siliceous fragments scattered throughout."

Laboratory tests were conducted with a closed, recycling system to evaluate the effectiveness of solid-in-gas suspensions as heat transport mediums. Micronized graphite in helium or nitrogen was circulated by a centrifugal compressor to determine the feasibility of the method and heat transfer capabilities of the mediums. Suspensions were circulated without plugging or eroding the compressor or piping. At low flowrates and light (0.1 to 0.2 volume-percent) graphite loadings, slightly less power was required to transport a given amount of heat with suspensions than with helium alone. Graphite deposition on the heat exchange surfaces of the cooler decreased the heat transfer effectiveness at higher solids concentration. Efforts to eliminate deposition are described.

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."

A compressor and utility station, which is believed to be one of the largest mobile units of this type ever constructed, was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., during. 1949. This mobile unit mounts two 770-cubic-feet-per-minute air compressors, a 2,500-gallon water tank, and a 200-cubic-foot air receiver. The mobile base of the unit is a 30-ton trailer 30-feet long and 12-feet wide. Prior to the construction of this unit, compressed air was supplied to underground workings through pipe lines connecting with a stationary compressor plant on the surface. The power consumed in supplying compressed air to underground drilling crews was 0.531 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken. Use of the mobile unit has cut this figure to 0.421 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken and, more important, has eliminated the cost of installing and maintaining underground air and water lines.

Fires in metal mines have resulted in some of the worst disasters in American mining history insofar as loss of life is concerned. One fire caused the death of 163 miners and individual less spectacular fires have cost the lives of scores of workers. Metal mines are often very deep, and the men working on numerous levels far removed from direct communication with the surface. In many instances they cannot be warned quickly of an emergency or a mine fire by telephone or other usual method of communication, or by messenger, flashing lights, gongs, sirens, or whistles. Telephones are not paricularly effective as a means of warning unless placed at all strategic points and with attendants always on duty; though telephones well placed have a definite value in any well-pla.mied emergency procedure in mines of all kinds. Messengers are slow and men working in remote parts of a mine would not receive a warning quickly enough. Most metal mines are not electrically lighted, except at or adjacent to shaft stations and in principal haulageways, and this limits the effectiveness of flashing lights. Electric gongs and sirens or whistles have been tried as warning signals, but the sound is quickly deadened and does not travel upward into the stopes, especially those of an extensive volume. Shutting off the compressed air is by no means satisfactory as a warning, as not infrequently it is stopped accidently, so that it loses its value as an alarm. The introduction of water into compressed air lines is undesirable as a fire warning and necessitates considerable care, especially in deep mines; pressure-reducing valves must be provided to reduce pressure that otherwise would break connections or split the pipe. A quick, effective method of warning miners underground of the existence of an emergency requiring them to leave the mine immediately, such as a fire on the surface or underground, is provided by the introduction of stenches in the compressed-air lines. [The purpose of this paper is to acquaint manufacturers of various types of asbestos product's, particularly those that specialize in materials used for sound deadening, vibration damping, and filtration, with a recently invested depth deposit of paligorskite, a type of asbestos usually called mountain leather. In the past this mineral has been only a museum curiosity but it possesses characteristics that may adapt it to industrial uses. The deposit is on Lemesurier Island, near this entrance to Glacier Bay, in the northern portion of southeastern Alaska, at approximately latitude 58° 17? N., longitude 1360 05' W. The island is about 4 ½ miles in east- west length and miles in width. The property on which the deposit occurs is owned by the locator Joe Ibach, end it was brought; to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Col. George B. Norris. A Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the owner and Chris Ellingen, visited the property sand examined the open-cuts from May 7 to 10 in 1944. The purpose of the examination was to determine the approximate extent of the occurrence and to obtain samples of the material for identification end study of its utilization.]

"The inhalation of silica has been shown to produce a dramatic inflammatory and toxic response within the lungs of humans and laboratory animals. A variety of cellular and biochemical parameters are used to assess the silica-induced lung injury. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the use of luminok:Jependent chemiluminescence as a new method to study inflammation in both phagocytic cells and lung tissue recovered from silicaexposed animals. Chemiluminescence, or the emission of light, accompanies the release of reactive forms of oxygen when phagocytic cells are challenged. In this study, male Fischer 344 rats were intratracheally instilled with either silica (10 mg/100 g bw) or saline vehicle. One day after the instillations. a marked increase in the chemiluminescence was observed in the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage cells recovered from the silica- treated animals when compared with the saline controls. The light reaction was markedly decreased by either superoxide dismutase or N-nitro-Larginine methyl ester hydrochloride. Superoxide dismutase is involved in the enzymatic breakdown of superoxide anion. while N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrocholoride, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, prevents the formation of nitric oxide. When superoxide anion and nitric oxide react. they form the highly oxidizing substance peroxynitrite. This study then implicates peroxynitrite as an agent that may be responsible for some of the oxidant lung injury that is associated with silica exposure. The use of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence may prove valuable as a method to measure the earliest events in the inflammatory process. and may be an adjunct in studying the mechanisms that produce inflammation. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):37-42 (1994) IntroductionResearch on inflammation has not produced a method that links the initial events of the process to the controlling events. Rather, a variety of parameters are measured that are the result of and not the basis of the inflammatory reaction. Parameters such as tissue weight, edema, blood flow, enzyme and protein release, or production of metabolites (prostaglandins, leukotrienes) have been used extensively. A method is needed that could be applied to cells of a particular type, groups of cells of different types, and even tissue, in an attempt to study the kinetics of the inflammation as well as being sensitive enough to monitor the early events of the process . Since inflammation is so complicated, the relationship between the control of the initial events and the oxidation process has never been explained nor studied in any derail."

Modern mechanized mining with high-speed machines, multiple-entry systems, multiple blasting, high-velocity air currents, and rapid haulage has brought many economic benefits and has on the whole enhanced safety in the coal-mining industry. It has, however, also introduced some added hazards, the control of which requires concerted effort and ingenuity. Mechanized mining has greatly increased the production and dissemination of fine coal seam or in mine entries. Use of high-speed machines has increased the probability of formation of incendive sparks, which are produced by frictional contact between moving metals and certain mineral substances in the coal seam or in the adjoining rock strata. In gassy seams rapid extraction of coal has increased the rate of gas evolution. These facts have made more urgent the need of preventing the ignition of coal dust and the development of widespread mine explosions. The ignition hazard can be controlled best by eliminating all potential igniting sources and by careful attention to ventilation designed to prevent accumulation of gas capable of triggering a coal-dust explosion. Frictional spark ignition by mining machines and suggested safeguards are discussed in a recent publication. Extensive research and long experience have shown conclusively that the propagation of coal-dust flames can be arrested and the development of widespread explosions prevented by properly applied, generalized rock dusting.

Thermoelectric properties of depleted uranium selenides and tellurides were investigated from room temperature to 700 C. Several depleted uranium monoselenides and monotellurides were doped with selected cationic and anionic materials to determine the effect of impurity additions on the thermoelectric properties. The undoped uranium selenides and tellurides were semimetallic conductors exhibiting low Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities. Partial or complete degeneracy was in evidence, indicating a charge carrier energy distribution similar to that in a metal. Doping increased the Seebeck coefficients of the uranium monoselenides and monotellurides; however, the corresponding change in the power factor in the figure of merit was small because of the increase in electrical resistivity.

U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.

This report describes apparatus and procedure used for determining the vapor pressure of aviation gasoline in surveys of commercial aviation-gasoline characteristics made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel and Equipment Committee of the Coordinating Research Council, Inc. (CFR-CRC). The method is a modification of the Reid method, in which a mercury manor is substituted for the Bourdon-type gage of the Reid method. The method was used in earlier surveys made by the National Bureau of Standards in cooperation with the CFR-CRC, and was used in the Bureau of Mines surveys at the request of the cooperating organizations. It is designed for special research problems? particularly in vapor-lock studies, which require a precision greater than obtainable by the Reid vapor pressure method. A repeatability of + 0.01 p.s.i. average deviation from the mean may be obtained by method.

Objective To improve seats on mine shuttle cars with ergonomic design and by reducing shock impact transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Background Operators of underground mobile equipment, particularly shuttle cars, are often exposed to significant levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Past studies have reported that as many as one-third of underground equipment operators could be exposed to adverse levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Moreover, seats on mining equipment, historically, are inadequate relative to the ergonomic needs of the equipment operator. In the extreme, amine vehicle seat has sometimes consisted of blocks of wood or a bent steel plate bolted to the machine frame. Also, the lack of sufficient vertical clearance in some underground mines is an impediment to providing adequate shock isolation systems on mine equipment seats. Approach The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) is conducting research with viscoelastic foams to improve seats on mine shuttle cars. Viscoelastic foams were used in an ergonomically designed seat to reduce the amount of shock transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Data on selected viscoelastic foams were analyzed from laboratory shock tests at PRC. Using information from the analysis, two ergonomic seats incorporating selected foam were constructed for in-mine testing on a shuttle car (Joy 21SC) in eastern Kentucky. The shuttle car operated in a 35-in-thick coal seam with an approximate mining height of 43 in. Operational data were recorded on the ergonomic and original seats. Further, the shuttle car operator was asked to compare these seats. Results When comparing the original seat (figure 1) with the ergonomic seat (figure 2), the shuttle car operator described the ergonomic seat as generally “much better” than the original seat. The operator explained. “It’s just easy to adjust. And it’s got the lower lumbar support. And the pad is thicker. It’s just much better all the way around.” He added, “It does support you more and [there is] less shock when you hit a hole...I liked the lower lumbar support. That’s where most of your shock is at, in your lower back.” The operational data supported the operator’s comments. In the full-load case, significant improvements in isolation were achieved(down to 15 Hz) with the ergonomic seat. Additional laboratory testing of seven viscoelastic foams was done to further improve the level of isolation from shock and better characterize the material properties of each foam. Data from this testing were used in an analytical model of the seat pan isolation system. Results showed that two of the viscoelastic foams, SUN-MATE EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE, gave the most effective shock isolation of the seven materials tested. A composite of EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE foams improved the isolation characteristics of the seat pan to approximately 4 Hz. Similarly, EXTRA-SOFT by itself provided isolation to 5 Hz. This paper describing the minim, methods at the mine of the Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines, Cortez, Nevada, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Cortez district is situated on the southwest slope of Mt. Tenabo of the Cortez Range, near the middle of the boundary line between Eureka and Lander Counties (fig. 1). The camp of Cortez is 36 miles south of Beowawe, the nearest station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. Mt. Tenabo, which is the highest summit of the south end of the Cortez mange, has an elevation of 9,240 feet; Cortez is about 6,280 feet above sea level. The Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines is the only company operating in the district at the present time and employs about 60 men. The daily production of l25 tons of silver-lead ore is concentrated in the company's mill of 150 tons capacity. The concentrate is hauled to Beowawe by automobile trucks for shipment to a reduction plant in Salt Lake Valley, Utah.

The Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of the Natural Gas Association of America, has conducted a study of leakage losses from natural-gas transmission lines. This study has shorn that surveys to determine the leakage from transmission lines lead to line repair work that not only aids in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show financial returns of large magnitude.2 In order to conduct the study, it was necessary to develop accurate and reliable methods of determining the actual leakage from pipe lines. METHODS OF TESTING Three methods that were developed and used to determine the leakage losses from high-pressure natural-gas transmission lines are: (1) The "pressure-drop" method, (2) The "metering-in and metering-out" method. (3) The "metering-in" method.
