Cylindrical plastic scintillators were investigated for efficiency in detecting neutron-induced prompt gamma rays. Scintillator performance was compared on the basis of half-resolution and peak-to-trough ratios for gamma spectra obtained from Co-60 (1.17 and 1.33 MeV), Th-228 (2.62 MeV), and PuBe (4.43 MeV). Various sizes of Pilot Chemical scintillators (types B, F, M, and Y) were tested. The best half-resolution, 7.7 percent for PuBe, was achieved with a 5-by 5-inch Pilot Y?scintillator and dual photomultipliers. Comparison with sodium iodide (NaI) scintillators and the use of plastic scintillators for on-stream analysis of sulfur in coal is discussed. Plastics were found to be unsuitable for on-stream analysis of materials having complex prompt gamma ray spectra; however, they could conceivably be used for those yielding Simpler spectra.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems, both in use and under development, were investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, monorail bridge conveyor, multiple-unit continuous haulage, extensible, and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine research being conducted by the Bureau. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. There are 381 mining sections currently operating on permit; from the interim Compliance Panel.

Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

Samples of raw oil shale and kerogen concentrates were oxidized by alkaline potassium permanganate, air, nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone to obtain information about the chemical structure of organic kerogen in oil shale. In one test, oil shale and oil-shale products were oxidized exhaustively with alkaline potassium permanganate, and the distribution of the organic carbon in the final oxidation products was determined. Comparing results of this oxidation with those obtained from other carbonaceous materials and known compounds gave information about the structure of kerogen. Alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation also was used partly to degrade kerogen into soluble products for characterization purposes. Structures present in these degradation products were indicative of type structures originally present in the kerogen. Nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone were used also for partly degrading kerogen to soluble oxidation products. Carbon-balance oxidation tests using alkaline potassium permanganate showed that Colorado oil-shale kerogen differs from many other carbonaceous materials such as coal and kerogens from other areas. Composition of the degradation products indicated that Colorado oil-shale kerogen is predominantly cycloparaffinic and saturated heterocyclic structures with some long-chain paraffinic and aromatic structures present. The ring systems may be connected through short carbon chains or bridges containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. This second of a series of reports on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents inspection test data furni8hed on their products by 15 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data on 18 grade-80, 20 grade-91/98, 20 grade-100/130, and 9 grade-115/145 aviation fuels are presented. These gasolines represent July 1947 production.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. To facilitate increase in the rate of coal production the Bureau of Mines conducted a study several years ago, on the basis of which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives in single-hole blasting was raised from 1.5 to 3.0 pounds. Further demands for accelerated production led to consideration of multiple blasting in coal, a practice that is deemed hazardous and is not permitted by most States in this country. In multiple blasting, 10 to 20 pounds of explosive or more may be detonated in a coal face within a fraction of a second, which might result in blown-out or blown-through shots with possible ignition of gas or coal dust. As experimental evidence was lacking, in January 1949 an investigation was undertaken in the Experimental coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., principally to study and compare with single blasting the condi-tions under which simultaneous multiple blasting and particularly multiple short-delay blasting may be practiced without danger of igniting gas or coal dust in mines. The first report on this subject was presented at the last international conference of mine safety research. Since that time numerous additional experiments have been made; because of other pressing problems the work has been brought temporarily at least to a conclusion. This paper is the second report on the problem. It does not contain a detailed description of all test conditions and test arrangements, many of which were described 2 years ago in part 1 (now available as Report of Investigations 4868), but the conclusions are based on the entire study. A more complete review, which will incorporate data from the entire investigation, is being prepared as a Bureau of Mines bulletin. Up to the present time, short-delay blasting of coal in commercial mines has been introduced only experimentally in Washington and in a few mines elsewhere. If the system is adopted more generally, new problems may arise, and the study may have to be reopened.

Preliminary Bureau of Mines studies of mafic igneous rocks collected from the Rabbit Creek area, northwestern Alaska, indicated concentrations of platinum (412 to 1,406 ppb) and palladium (343 to 892 ppb) in five of eight samples analyzed. The samples represent boulders and cobbles of mafic/ultramafic rocks from this locality. They are not from outcrop. Petrologically, (on the hand specimen scale) the samples are crudely to well-layered and are troctolitic ± gabbroie in character, with primary igneous mafic minerals strongly altered. Small patches of interstitial sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and covellite are associated with these altered zones and elsewhere through the specimens. Copper values ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pct in samples analyzed semiquantitatively; nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents are low. Chemical, mine alogic, and petrographic relationships suggest that the rocks of similar character outcropping in northwestern Alaska could also be considered as prospective for- concentrations or platinum, palladium, and copper.

Salt mixtures consisting of KC1, BaC12, and HfCl4 with RbCl or CsCl were investigated as electrolytes for refining hafnium. The presence of RbCI or CsCl in the electrolyte appeared to suppress the volatility of. Best electrorefining was obtained with an electrolyte containing 50.7 percent KCl, 27.l percent BaCl2, 15.7 percent CsCl, and 6.5 percent HfCl4. In this electrolyte, hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of 470 ppm was produced from an anode feed containing l,600 ppm oxygen. All metallic impurities were lowered, except titanium, manganese, and tin.

The Federal Bureau of Mines refined chromium from an aqueous electrolytic process in molten sodium chloride-chromium chloride electrolytes. Oxygen and nitrogen contents were reduced by a factor of 10 to 40, but most other impurities were little changed. The product usually contained a little more iron than the feed. Since iron was entering the bath from the iron pot and the graphite liner at a nearly constant rate, contamination of the chromium deposits by it was more serious at low currents and deposition rates. A few runs in an iron cell with a nickel liner yielded chromium containing one half as much iron as the feed, but up to 1.5 pct. nickel. In all cases the anode feed lay in the bottom of the container, which itself was used as the anode connection. With a 12-in. cell, variations in applied voltage from 0.05 to 1.5, in current from less than 10 to over 100 a., and in initial cathode current densities from less than 100 to over 2,000 a./sq.ft. had little or no effect upon the analysis of the metal produced) except for iron content. Changes in bath analysis from 3 to 11 pct. chromium were also without effect. These changes did bring about large differences in the physical forms of the crystals obtained. The thick heavy crystals produced at low voltage and current contained voids which made them difficult to leach free of chlorides. Easiest to leach were the thin leaf-like crystals obtained at around 1 v.

As part of its mission, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continues to develop technologies that will enable cost-effective compliance with environmental requirements. To this end, investigations to improve the kinetics of chalcopyrite dissolution by simultaneous grinding-leaching in ferric sulfate solution were conducted using the Bureau-designed turbo mill. The development of such a hydrometallurgical process would provide a nonpolluting alternative to conventional smelter technology. The effects of mill rotational speed and volume percent solids on the leaching time and energy required for copper extraction from chalcopyrite were evaluated. The results of this laboratory study have shown that the simultaneous grinding-leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using the turbomill is technically feasible with essentially 100 pet extraction of copper being possible at 90° C. An optimal energy consumption of 1,153 kW?h/st of copper leached was found in batch testing with the mill operating at 400 rpm with a slurry containing 35 vol pet chalcopyrite. This energy consumption, while higher than other proposed leaching processes (about 600 kW?h/st), is of the same order of magnitude. Further refinement of the energy requirements would require additional testing using a continuous circuit. Leaching times of less than 1 h, for 80 pct copper extraction, are achievable using the turbomill grind-leach process.

This circular describes the methods and costs of deepening the Silver Summit three-compartment shaft in the Coeur d'Alene mining region of Idaho. A noteworthy rate of advance was achieved at this operation by the successful use of a mechanical shaft-mucking machine. The Silver Summit mine is 1 mile west from the town of Osburn, Idaho, via U. S. Highway 10. The adit-level portal of the mine is on the south slope of the Coeur d'Alene River Valley at an altitude of 2,700 feet. The Silver Summit shaft is 6,000 feet from the portal. In past years this shaft had been sunk from the adit level to a depth of 1,500 feet. During 1946 the Polaris Mining Co, deepened it to 3,095 feet. The work was done under a co- operative development agreement between the Silver Summit Mining Co. and the Polaris Mining Co.

Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. The microstructures of a CF2Br2-inhibited methane flame and its uninhibited analog have been determined using molecular beam-mass spectrometry. The slightly lean flames were stabilized on a cooled porous plug burner at reduced pressure. Composition profiles of stable, intermediate, and radical species and temperature profiles were obtained. Comparisons of the uninhibited and inhibited flame profiles revealed the following inhibition effects; a shift of the primary reaction zone to higher temperatures, a higher maximum flame temperature, an increase in the CH3 concentration, and a reduction in the H2CO, H, 0, and OH concentrations. Kinetic analyses of the data yielded rate coefficients at flame temperatures for the reactions H + CH4 ? CH3 + H2, H + O2 ? OH + O, CO + OH ? CO2 + H, and CH3 + O ? H2CO + H. CF2Br2 is judged to decay by thermal decomposition and abstraction reactions.

This report analyzes the petroleum-production potential of the basal Greenbrier dolomite zone, Sycamore-Millstone field, Sherman District, Calhoun County, W. Va., through the application of certain secondary-recovery methods. The well logs obtained and the core recovered from a well in this formation permitted an evaluation of the productive capability of the reservoir, Approximately 120,000 stb of oil may be produced from a 20-acre five-spot unit at breakthrough if the property is waterflooded. At an assumed limiting producing gas-oil ratio of 20)000 sef/stb, approximately 69,000 stb of oil should be recovered by low-pressure gas drive.

In the vast majority of American coal mines, roof bolt holes are drilled dry, mainly because of mine operator concern with the spent water creating adverse working conditions. Wet drilling, however, can increase drilling rates and the effective lifetime of the drill bits used. This study, carried out as part of an ongoing cooperative research program between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Missouri-Rolla, shows that the large volumes of water conventionally used in wet drilling are not necessary, and the performance benefits from wet drilling can be achieved with total volume flows on the order of 0.4 L per hole. This conclusion is validated based on the measured respirable dust generated in drilling Berea sandstone. The results are confirmed using a variety of bit shapes, which are also shown to have a significant effect on penetration rate.
