To improve control of blasting, tests were performed to assess non-electric cap accuracy. Simultaneous testing using a Velocity of Detonation Recorder (VODR), Red Lake LoCam and an Instantel DS-677 blast monitor was done. Favorable comparisons were found in the three records. This testing confirmed the accuracy of an inexpensive and expedient cap testing procedure.

This paper will describe blast design modifications that have been made at the Island Copper Mine, near Port Hardy, British Columbia. To date, two additional designs have been implemented in an effort to reduce final wall damage and increase productivity. The typical blast patterns in use at Island Copper were monitored in an effort to build up data to which new designs could be compared.

Manufacturers and users of energetic material (e.g., propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics (PEP)) generate unserviceable, obsolete, off-specification, damaged, and contaminated items that are characterized as "reactive wastes" by definition, and therefore regulated under RCRA, Subtitle C, as hazardous waste. Energetic wastes, to include waste ordnance and munitions items, have historically been disposed of by open burning/open detonation (OB/OD), particularly by the Department of Defense (DoD). However, increasing regulatory constraints have led to the recent reduction and limited use of OB/OD treatment.

Numerous large diameter water wells are used to dewater the pit at the Sleeper Mine. Occasionally, a well will be located inside the boundaries of a blast. Although one might expect that wells so located would become inoperable due to blast-induced damage, in most instances this has not proven to be the case.

The General Crushed Stone Company at Doswell VA. decided to open a new pit to expand their reserves. The elevation of the property was 136 feet above the present primary crusher. The project required driving twin tunnels under the highway to access the primary crusher from the new property. A shaft was needed to pass blasted rock to the tunnel elevation where it's loaded and hauled to the primary crusher. In addition, a ventilation shaft was required to provide adequate airflow. Dynatec Mining Contractors Inc. Lakewood Colorado was subcontracted to handle the tunnel and shaft development.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advise of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.
