"Two analytical closed-form elastic-rigid-plastic solution methods to predict the rigid foundation behaviour on stone-column reinforced soil are compared, both of which takes into account the stone material yield within the host soil according to stress-dilatancy theory. These are the mechanistic methods developed by the author (2004, 2005) [that presently incorporates the dilatancy angle as per Schanz and Vermeer (1996)] and that developed by Pulko and Majes (2006), that takes into account the column yield as per Rowe dilatancy theory. Since optimal design of stone column necessitates optimum stress concentration on column, which is generally composed of dense gravel with/or without sand, the vertical stress on granular column is often close to its peak strength and the material dilates. To arrive at closed-form analytic solution to this complex soil-stone column interaction problem, some common assumptions like axi-symmetric soilstone column ‘unit-cell’, elastic host soil and rigid-plastic Mohr-Coulomb stone column material are combined with equilibrium and kinematic conditions. The results reflect the beneficial effect of dilatancy within the optimal range or techno-economic domain of area-ratio. The settlement predictions are compared with other analytical methods available in literature as well as with measured settlement reduction of stonecolumn reinforced ground at different subsoil conditions around the globe reported in literature.INTRODUCTIONStone columns or granular piles are frequently used in stabilization of soft clays, silts and loose silty-sands with large amount of fines. The majority of analytical methods assume infinitely wide loaded area with end-bearing columns having constant diameter and spacing that approximate to axi-symmetric conditions, and the approach is known as ‘unit-cell concept’. Several analytical solutions are available, and many of them (Aboshi et al; 1979, Balaam & Booker; 1981) are based on elastic approach considering the stonecolumn and surrounding soil as elastic materials. However, elastic methods give the ratio between the vertical stress in the column to soil (stress concentration factor) approximately equal to the ratio of constrained modulus of both materials. This ratio was found to be considerably higher than measured in the field and it is believed that elastic methods may overestimate the effects of stone columns on settlement reduction (Barksdale & Bachus, 1983). The elastic and elasto-plastic solutions presented by Balaam and Booker (1981, 1985) indicate that the problem can be idealized by assuming that the stone column is in a triaxial state and possibly yielding, such that there is no shear stress at the stone-soil interface and no yielding in the soil. Similar assumptions of stone column to be in a state of limiting equilibrium and under a triaxial stress state are considered in other methods also (Priebe; 1976, Van Impe & De Beer; 1983, Van Impe & Madhav; 1992, Saha & De; 1994, Saha; 2004, 2005, Pulko & Majes; 2006). In majority of the methods it is assumed that under load the stone-column yields at constant volume. However, the last three cases cited consider another parameter; the dilation of stone column. In Van Impe and Madhav’s (1992) and author’s (2004, 2005) method, the dilation is taken into account through the final value of the volumetric strain of column, whereas Pulko & Majes (2006) considered the stone column as Mohr-Coulomb rigid-plastic; dilating at yield in line with Rowe (1962) dilatancy theory."

This paper is the second in a series of two describing the design and construction of a foundation for a major high-rise real estate development on the west side of Manhattan, N.Y. The foundation members consist of large-diameter rock-socketed caissons, driven closed-end steel pipe piles bearing on rock, and a secant-pile retaining wall surrounding the entire site. This paper focuses on the Osterberg cell (O-Cell) load test completed for determining the allowable side-shear resistance between the concrete and the sides of the rock socket. Different qualities of mica schist bedrock, demonstrated by the penetration of rock with the soil auger or drill casing, were encountered. Accordingly, an additional subsurface investigation consisting of test borings at each caisson location was completed. Unconfined compressive strength tests were performed on representative rock samples. The ?soft? mica schist was observed to have vertical foliations and high mica content. For the first time in Manhattan, an O-Cell load test was performed to determine the allowable side shear resistance for both the soft and hard mica schist bedrock. The side shear resistance obtained from the O-Cell load test is compared with the side shear resistance allowed by the New York City Building Code and empirical correlations using unconfined compressive strength values for rock. The rock socket design for the caissons was refined based on the O-Cell load test results.

The RC Harris Filtration Plant, which treats the majority of the fresh water for over 2.5 million Torontonians, is a Canadian Architectural Heritage site demonstrating a classic example of Art Deco Architecture. The facility is undergoing an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability. Perched atop a bluff on the North shore of Lake Ontario the structure enjoys a commanding presence on the Lake Ontario shoreline. A series of underground tanks were proposed for the hillside below the structure, which when covered would preserve the building?s architectural presence. However, the plan required two, stepped excavations 12 m and 10m deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts. Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the front footing of the existing structure at 4 mm, (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Analysis indicated installation effects and overall elastic movement of the soil mass beneath the building would result in movements of 7 to 9 mm at the structure. Through extensive FLAC analysis and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept. Based upon the analysis the design-build team negotiated a new deflection criteria dictating a maximum of 2.0 mm of movement across the critical expansion joint between the Filter Building front footing and the tank slab beyond. The contractor invested in additional pre tender soils investigation to support the refined design process. The FLAC analyses indicated the Filter Building movements would be elastic and distributed up to 50 m back beneath the front footing of the structure. An extensive precision monitoring program proved construction related movements of 6 to 10 mm horizontal at the front footing. Extensometers placed at two locations over the critical interior tank expansion joint showed no measurable movements. The overall monitoring program, including inclinometers, tilt meters, tie back extensometers (smart cables) and tie back load cells indicated a good match between recorded movements and loads and those predicted by FLAC Analysis.

Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load?deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.

"The use of Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) for temporary soil strengthening and seepage control is an effective alternative to grouting when dealing with soils whose degree of finesses would imply the use of highly expensive chemical grouts. However, compared to grouting, the application of this improvement technique usually needs a more accurate preliminary soil investigation campaign and a design assisted by specific calculation software. Besides a general description of the main features of this technique, the paper will describe a recent application of AGF carried out in Rome to underpass an existing metro station.INTRODUCTIONNatural ground freezing occurs seasonally or permanently (permafrost) in some areas of the globe close to the poles and can negatively affect the engineering performance of underground structures. On the other hand, Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) is man-made controllable freezing process that can be used in foundation engineering to temporarily strengthen the ground and create a barrier to the passage of groundwater. During the process, the heat is extracted from the soil in a cylindrical shape around a number of freezing pipes installed into the ground. This action produces columns of frozen soil, which expand gradually till they merge and create continuous frozen wall. The thickness of this barrier can be regulated according to the specific project requirements. Nowadays, AGF technique is applied to a wide range of foundation engineering problems where soil stability and groundwater flows are an issue (Pimentel et al. 2011, Haß and Schäfers, 2013). Typical applications include the temporary stabilization and waterproof of the ground around the excavation profile of mined tunnels until the construction of the final lining (Figure 1).The case history described in this paper deals with a recent application of AGF carried out during the construction of metro Line “C” in Rome. Specifically, this technique has been applied to allow the construction of two single-track mined tunnels running underneath an existing metro station belonging to Line “A”. In that case, the AGF has been evaluated by the Designers as the only possible solution for improving the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics"

"Verifying the quality of cast-in-place foundation applications, particularly those cast under slurry, is of course important, due to its great dependency on the methodology employed and on the practices of the site personnel. Due to the techniques used to install these elements, it is usually not possible to inspect the hole prior to grout or concrete placement, but there are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available to assess the integrity of the completed foundation elements. This paper will compare several NDT methods with the Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) method for verifying the integrity in Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles and Bored Piles. The Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described and some examples will be presented where TIP testing was used to confirm the structural integrity of CFA piles and Bored Piles.IntroductionThere are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available for integrity testing of foundation elements. Each of those methods has advantages and disadvantages (White et al, 2008). Some methods test the integrity based on the reflections of a stress-wave generated by low or high-strain impact, while others require tubes to be installed prior to concrete pouring, and test the integrity between those tubes, or within a small proximity of them. The former methods (especially the low-strain) are faster and more cost-effective, but are not able to detect the quadrant where the damage is located. The latter methods are able to determine the quadrant, but do not test the region outside of the reinforcing cage, that is, they are not able to determine the concrete cover. The Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) NDT method overcomes the limitations of these other NDT methods.Overview of Shaft Integrity MethodsUntil now, the most widely used methods to test the integrity of Bored and CFA piles were the low-strain pile integrity testing and the cross-hole ultra-sonic testing. The low-strain method for integrity testing (PIT) involves attaching an accelerometer usually to the pile top (using a putty or wax) and striking the pile surface with a handheld hammer, which causes a compressive wave to enter the pile. This wave is totally reflected when it reaches the end of the pile or a major defect, and is partially reflected when it encounters any change in crosssection, or a change in the resistance or density of the pile material. These reflections arrive at the top at a time determined by the distance and wave speed, and causes a noticeable change in the signal detected by the accelerometer. The acceleration signal is normally converted to velocity by simple integration, and sometimes the force applied by the hammer is also measured. The velocity (and force) signals can be processed by the pulse-echo method (in the time domain) or by the transient response method (in the frequency domain)."

Geotechnical exploration in North America, in particular, exploration for deep foundations analyses, is currently and generally performed following the most basic sampling and insitu testing methods and techniques. Some would surely say that the state-of-practice severely lags the state-of-the-art. Probably more than 90% of all deep foundations, both driven piles and drilled piers, installed in North America are initially analyzed and designed, i. e. geotechnically, on the basis of either the soil penetration resistance obtained by performing the "Standard Penetration Test" (SPT), or from laboratory shear tests performed on samples obtained using 76-mm (3-in.) nominal diameter, thin wall, "Shelby tube" samplers. The use of design data obtained with other exploration methods and devices, such as bore hole pressure meters, flat plate dilatometers, even cone penetrometers, occur on the fringes of practice and often in conjunction with the use of the two simpler methods of analysis. This basic approach probably represents an attempt of the profession to use, as much as possible, common, easily understood and easily communicated procedures in all geologic environments. The characteristics of drill rigs with the required drilling and samplng tools vary somewhat from region to region in North America according to the physiography of the area of use, the types of exploration data required on a day-to-day basis, the philosophy of the engineers and geologists that use the exploration data and the financial resources of the drill rig owner. The physical capability of the exploration drill rig used on a project can have a significant effect on the quality of samples or insitu tests. The physical configuration and the quality of the drill and the drilling, sampling and testing tools not only provide the mechanical capability to obtain data but affect the attitude of the field exploration crew and the quality of work. This complete presentation is taken, for the most part, from a book in preparation for publication: "Geotechnical Exploration and Site Characterization" by C. Riggs, A. Hatheway and N. Schmidt. This manual provides basic practical instruction on the inspection of driven piles. It covers the essential components of pile driving, such as the pile driving hammer, hammer accessories, the pile and soil, and frequently encountered test methods in an uncomplicated, yet knowledgeable, and practical manner. Insight is given into the methods of installing the foundation, dealing with the cranes which do the lifting, the hammers which do the driving, the leads that guide the hammer and pile, the compressors which provide the external power when required, and finally prevalent analysis tools and testing instrumentation and procedures which enable you, the Inspector, to do your job. This DFI Inspector's Manual for Pile Foundations will help the Pile Inspector who has limited knowledge of pile foundations. Perhaps this Inspector has been pressed into service at a moments notice; a few helpful hints and suggestions to him are desperately needed and he can look here for the basics. It is also useful for the experienced Pile Inspector as a reference guide. However, this manual is not a detailed check list of every possible scenario and detail which could ever be encountered. There are other sources available which give more detailed descriptions (and should be consulted by the Inspector when appropriate; a list of this additional reference material is provided and suggestions made in appropriate chapters of this text). The current manual is more a brief "textbook overview" with some of the more important aspects given at least some emphasis so that the Inspector has some direction and hopefully helps to produce a safe, yet economical, foundation.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam has long been used in numerous geotechnical applications due to its lightweight and durability. Among these applications is the use of EPS as an alternative fill material to conventional roadway soil embankments. This study investigates the benefits of using EPS roadway embankments to reduce the induced stresses and strains on the underlying peat and soft clay. Firstly, mechanical and interface properties of the EPS were acquired from a companion study that also considered the cyclic loading and creep effects. In order to determine the actual stress-strain distribution within the EPS blocks, a physical prototype was developed in this study with overall dimensions of 1.2 x 1.0 x 0.5 m, with a density of 35 kg/m3. The prototype EPS blocks were subjected to cyclic loading with intensities ranging from 10 to 50 kN. Then, a numerical model was developed to simulate the behavior of EPS roadway embankments. The numerical model outcomes were verified against the prototype measurements. A parametric design study was also conducted to develop a correlation between EPS embankment height and the stress-strain that occur in the underlying strata. Results showed that EPS embankments could reduce stress and settlement in the underlying soil by about 40% and 54%, respectively. EPS APPLICATIONS AND BACKGROUND Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam blocks have been effectively used during the past several decades in numerous geotechnical applications. EPS static and dynamic properties as well as interface behavior were extensively characterized in various published studies such as that conducted by Horvath, 1994; Stark et al., 2004; Zarnani and Bathurst, 2008; Trandafir et al., 2010; Athanasopoulos et al., 2012; AbdelSalam and Azzam, 2016; and others. However, to be able to use locally produced EPS blocks, its physical and mechanical properties must be thoroughly determined. The lightweight and compressible material of EPS geofoam makes it suitable both as a backfill and for absorbing pressure in both the vertical and horizontal directions. Kim et al. (2010) adopted EPS as an alternative for soil backfill around buried pipes; their model showed a reduction in the vertical stress acting on the pipes by up to 36%. Oshati et al. (2012) presented a case study of a field-instrumented box culvert with EPS blocks on top, which reduced vertical stress by 58%. Meguid et al. (2017) used an EPS inclusion to surround culverts and achieved up to 72% stress reduction, depending on the EPS density and the culvert depth to width ratio. AbdelSalam et al. (2017) used a relatively thin EPS inclusion behind flexible cantilever retaining walls, verifying that the lateral pressure can be significantly reduced by 25%; they also developed a design chart for this application. Moreover, AbdelSalam et al. (2019) investigated the use of EPS as a lightweight alternative for soil backfill above shallow tunnels. It was found that EPS had created a differential movement between the wedge located above the tunnel and the neighboring soils, which accordingly reduced the vertical stress acting on the tunnel by 85%, due to the use of lightweight EPS material and positive soil arching.

Engineers and owners widely recognize the benefits of foundation reuse - cost savings, reduced construction schedules and reduced environmental impacts, among others. Yet for many projects with existing foundations identified as reusable, reuse is an idea that is discussed at length before cold feet prevail. To address this disconnect, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) formed the Foundation Reuse Task Force in 2021, which intends to promote reuse, leveraging experience among DFI members and collaborating across pertinent committees. Indeed, the task force includes about 40 members drawn from the Subsurface Characterization for Deep Foundations, Sustainability and Testing and Evaluation committees. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to create a database of successful reuse projects, developing short summary documents highlighting the database projects and recruiting reuse-focused presentations for the ITS Money program. Solid progress has been made on each front: the case history database includes 12 cases so far; the first three summary documents were recently published to DFI's website and foundation reuse projects have been well represented among the past year's ITS Money program. The reuse case history summary documents are available at www.dfi.org/foundation-reuse- case-histories; each of the three is also discussed below. The summary documents demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of foundation reuse. The documents are therefore a useful tool for foundation engineers to share with owners, structural engineers and anyone else who may be hesitant to pursue foundation reuse. The task force continues to welcome new members and anyone interested in joining can contact Andy Boeckmann. The task force is also eager to highlight additional reuse success stories. Anyone with case history information to share is also encouraged to contact Boeckmann.

Type 1B micropiles (Bruce and Juran, 1997) can be installed rapidly and efficiently. During an 85-day period, 536 micropiles were installed to depths of 61 meters within a site 41 meters by 43 meters. Their performance, as measured by load test, varied even where the materials, construction procedure, and installation technique were closely monitored and controlled. The variation in displacement, as measured by the standard deviation, exceeded 50 percent of the mean test-load displacement for all loads up to the maximum load applied (2670 kN). This study provides a statistical basis to predict variability with respect to the construction method, micropile materials, and installation technique. The variability of displacement at all test loads is a fundamental characteristic of this type of drilled deep foundation system.

Micropiles transfer tension or compression forces as well as cyclic loads into the ground via skin friction. The Self Drilling Micropiles (SDM) can be utilized for permanent applications. The hollow bar simultaneously acts, as drilling rod, injection tube and reinforcement for the micropile. The SDM system can be used in any type of soil, including unstable soils, without the need for temporary casing. Injecting a cement grout through the hollow steel tendon ensures that the borehole is filled from the bottom to the top. The system is fast, simple, and flexible. The installation minimises noise, vibration, and spoil. There are many potential applications, including foundations, underpinning, resisting uplift, dynamic/cyclic load applications and geothermal installations. The SDM technology were introduced to India first time in the Indian history and utilised in the 4G and 5G network projects. The SDM challenge the traditional cast-in-situ piles in the 4G project and raft foundations in the 5G project. Utilisations of the tensile and the compressive strength capacity of SDM with smart solutions results in noticeably big costs, 17-38 % depending on the soil conditions and time savings. The cost of the SDM solutions was about 40% less than the cast-in-situ piles and raft foundations in an ongoing 5G project. The SDM were used successfully in the liquefiable soil types as well.

"The Brickworks Marketplace Project is a significant shopping centre development in inner north west Adelaide constructed by Badge Constructions in 2014 and 2015. The site was a former brickworks with a deep pit containing various extents of uncontrolled fill which was to remain on site, and with a remaining void up to 6 m in depth. The existing uncontrolled fill was improved using the High Energy Impact Compaction system, and the pit backfilled using a quarry crusher byproduct selected by trial and a recycled crushed concrete and bricks and compacted in deep lifts. This approach resulted in significant savings in compaction time, cost and building foundations. The settlements of various parts of the completed works have been monitored since February 2015 and this monitoring has demonstrated small settlements which meet the user’s constraints.INTRODUCTIONThe Torrensville Brickwork Markets project involved the transformation of a former brickworks and clay pit site into a regional 17,000m2 shopping centre, opening in June 2015.The site was a former brickworks with adjoining clay borrow pit. The clay pit had been partially backfilled over many years with ‘uncontrolled’ fill comprising ‘clean’ soil, bricks and kiln dust typically of the following thicknesses:??of the order of up to 7 m to 10 m but locally up to 15 m in the western part of the site??2 m to 5 m in the south-eastern part of the site; and??less than 0.5 m in the north-eastern part of the siteAnecdotal reports suggested compaction of some of the fill may have been undertaken, although this not able to be confirmed nor records obtained.Initially it was proposed to take up the existing uncontrolled fill, sort and recompact or remove to landfill, followed by backfilling in conventional means over 500,000 cubic metres of imported filling to a thickness of up to approximately 6m to backfill the former pit. This work represented a significant cost and was not economically viable.During early negotiations, the contractor proposed an alternative to retain and ground improve the existing filling on site, and to backfill the pit with fill placed and compacted in deep lifts, thereby significantly improving the economics, environmental and community impacts of the proposed works.The developer agreed to the proposal with the following performance criteria:??a settlement of =10 mm after 10 passes by the Impact Compactor (on existing subgrade areas);??a bearing capacity of 250 kPa for high level footings;??a maximum long term differential settlement of 40 mm (measured over 16 m), ie. 1 in 400; and??a minimum modulus of 40MPa."

"An underground reservoir was to be constructed at Doha in Qatar. Simsima lime stone is present at the bottom. When the reservoir is empty, there will be uplift at the bottom but this will change to downward load when it is full. The rock at the bottom had high bearing capacity to resist downward load. But uplift had to be resisted by piles or anchors. The reservoir has a size of 120mx80m. Shrinkage and creep of concrete coupled with thermal contraction imposed a horizontal movement of 26mm on the extreme piles. So, piles have to accommodate this as well. This unique situation needed a unique solution. The solution was to provide piles with flexible high tensile strands to take tension. An annular space near the head of the pile would facilitate horizontal movement as well. Compression load was directly passed on to the raft bearing on rock.INTRODUCTIONAn underground reservoir for storage of drinking water was to be constructed at Doha, Qatar. The reservoir was proposed to have a plan size of 120m x 80m. Clear height inside the reservoir was proposed as 17.2m, from the bottom of roof to the top of bottom raft. Overall height of the reservoir at the outlet from the top of the roof to the bottom of raft was to be 21.2m. For the sake of inspection and in order to prevent pollution from the surroundings a gallery was planned around the reservoir. This could accommodate pipelines as well. This gallery was 3.0m wide on three sides and 8.4m wide on the outlet side.The gallery had removable gratings as cover in order to facilitate maintenance. Capacity of the reservoirwas proposed to be 40million gallons. The reservoir is divided into four compartments with baffle walls in each one for water circulation. Roof of the reservoir is kept at 300mm above ground level. There are two levels of car park on top of the reservoir. Top of the reservoir roof is at +14.35. Bottom varies from - 6.68 to -7.08. Lowest water table is at +6.00. Concrete structure of the reservoir was designed by a local consultant. The Navayuga Engineering Company was entrusted with the construction. "Complexity in soil-foundation interaction and subsoil nonlinear behavior cause difficulties and uncertainties in evaluating the actual values of foundation design factors such as settlement. The acquired continuous records of Cone Penetration Test (CPT) can be used to determine the soil profile and characteristics those are applicable in the geotechnical design. In this paper, it has been attempted to present a new non-linear stress-strain approach to estimate the foundations settlement by using CPT data in the form of soil behavior classification charts. This new approach is based on Janbu method (1960s and also 1998). Instead of using fixed and constant values for stress exponent (j) and modulus number (m), continuous coefficient variations can be used. The proposed approach also can be used as a new method to predict pile group settlement. A data bank has been compiled containing twenty-two practical case histories to investigate the accuracy of the predictions made by the proposed and available common methods. The comparisons indicate that the proposed approach is relatively able to predict the settlement close to their real values. Therefore, it can be considered as an alternative method based on valuable CPT data and nonlinear stress-strain approach for foundations and pile groups settlement estimation.INTRODUCTIONComplexity in soil behaviour for settlement analysis is the result of non-linear and time dependent stressstrain behaviour of soils, their elasto-plastic performance under loading and unloading situation and also effects of stress history (Holtz et al., 2011; Fellenius, 2015). Hence, many relations and equations have been proposed to predict foundation settlement, where most of them are based on typical different parameters such as soil stiffness (E), foundation width (B), contact pressure (q) and pressure developing in depth (Janbu, 1967 also 1998; Briaud and Gibbens, 1999; Uzielli and Mayne, 2012).The Janbu approach for settlement estimation, proposed by Janbu in the early 1960s, combines the basic principles of linear and non-linear stress-strain behaviour of material. The method is applied to all types of soils. The relation between stress and strain is a function of two non-dimensional parameters which are unique for any soil: a stress exponent, “j”, and a modulus number, “m”. "Laboratory test data of strain softening soils exhibit the development of a maximum (peak) shear strength followed by a decrease in the strength with continued straining. The rate of strength loss decreases such that an asymptotic minimum value, known as the residual strength, is approached. This paper presents an investigation of the evolution of strength degradation in excavation supported soils that exhibit strain softening behavior. The paper presents a numerical investigation of excavation support of slicken-sided clay, and results of shear testing on materials with similar strain softening behavior. A strain softening constitutive law is presented that can be used with the finite element computer software Plaxis for analysis of excavation support. A typical design section of a deep excavation support in stiff, fissured clay is presented that illustrates the limitations and conservatism of the residual strength approach for excavation support design. Finally, a discussion is presented on the impact of stiffer walls such as diaphragm walls, compared to less stiff systems such as sheet piles, on the design parameters.INTRODUCTIONIn the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the Potomac Formation is generally composed of stiff, fissured clays. Geotechnical engineers often associate the presence of slicken-sided planes within the formation as evidence that the soil cannot develop its peak strength. Although it is unclear how old and continuous these slicken-sided planes are, their occurrence, persistence and orientation appear to be somewhat random. Due to this uncertainty, the design of open cut slopes in these materials is often conservatively performed assuming residual shear strength values. This design approach may be justified for long-term open cuts when there is limited amount of geotechnical information and in view of back stability analyses of past slope failures. Furthermore, the lack of confinement in open cuts allows relatively high shear strains near the surface and toe throughout their existence, which promote mobilization of post-peak strength values and the ensuing progressive failure. Indeed, such behavior has been discussed in the past (Skempton, 1970; Schnabel et. al., 1982; Derrenbacher, 1998). A thorough study by Mesri et. al. (2003) of numerous slope failures concludes that the lower bound strength for stability analysis of non-failed slopes is the fully softened strength, which is intermediate between the peak and residual strengths, but that part of the slip surface may be in a residual condition prior to failure."

In 1939 Dr. Ralph Peck criticized the Civil Engineering community for taking a bifurcated approach to the prediction of building damage due to subsurface geo-technical works. Specifically, he observed that Geotechnical Engineers concerned themselves only with subsurface issues implying that their results were largely independent of the presence and condition of the structures above. He continued that Structural Engineers charged with risk assessment of buildings approached their work nearly in isolation of below ground activities. Seventy years later, although the state-of-the-art has enabled a better understanding of soil-structure interaction, the reality remains that risk assessment from subsurface construction, is not yet an integrated activity when done on a large-scale basis. To help move beyond this, this paper proposes a new, integrated methodology for preliminary assessment that considers a three-stage process that involves the following: (1) traditional empirical relationships for predicting ground movement from tunneling, (2) recent advances in condition assessments, and (3) architectural designators related to usage and historic preservation listings. The methodology is applied to a study area of nearly 260 buildings in the city center of Dublin Ireland, in an area slated for an upcoming metro. The results are com-pared to the Environmental Impact Statement issued for the official project. Al-though the test case is for tunneling, the approach may be adapted to other subsurface construction activities including excavation and piling.

Weidlinger Associates was retained to evaluate the foundations supporting ten oil storage tanks at a tank farm on the east coast. The tanks were constructed over the site of a landfill which was underlain by deep organic deposits. The tanks were typically 48 ft. in height and ranged in diameter from 60 to 150 ft. The tanks were supported on both wood and steel pipe piles. After more than 35 years of service, an inspection found that up to 25 percent of the piles had separated from the mat foundation. The operations at the facility were temporarily stopped pending further investigation. Weidlinger developed comprehensive finite element models of the foundations for each tank and used random generators to conduct Monte Carlo simulations the range of scenarios of detached support conditions since it was not possible to survey all the piles below the tanks. To confirm the modeled performance and verify stability, each tank was also load tested using water with electronic instrumentation installed by Geo-Instruments. The instrumentation provided real time, web based monitoring during testing in areas which would otherwise be inaccessible during loading. Through inspection, complex modeling and sophisticated load testing, Weidlinger and Geo-Instruments were able to show that all but one of the tanks could safely be put back into service. This paper details the analysis, Monte Carlo simulations and instrumentation and load testing performed for this unique project.

"A new pile driving and drilling navigation system has been developed. It utilizes the commonly used surveying total station, combined with an innovative reticle. Conventional crosshairs have been replaced by a concentrically circular reticle called Baum. It allows for easily performed measurements of central axes of cylindrical objects such as piles, chimneys, electricity poles, etc. This provides several significant advantages compared to other existing systems. It is cost-effective as only one operator is required to control deviations in positioning and inclination. Furthermore, repetitive reinstallation of the instrument is not required for every pile driven or hole drilled. It is also a safer method, as workers have no need to be near a pile driver or drilling machine to perform the measurements. With Baum Station, necessary measurements can be performed away from the actual work area. Moreover, it is highly accurate with real-time solutions, as three-dimensional orientation information for the pile/drill is obtained simultaneously with the pile being driven or the hole being drilled. This allows for the highest levels of precision-control and correction to minimize eccentricity of the intended center positioning.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundIn foundation construction for structures, pile foundations are widely used for deep bearing strata. There are two patterns to driving piles: vertically or obliquely to the ground. The shapes of the piles are normally cylindrical. Vertical pile foundations are employed as the foundations of many structures due to their high workability. There is a problem however, which is that this method does not bear measurement data as construction accuracy is visually checked. On the other hand, tilted pile foundations are rarely employed because it is too difficult to ensure construction accuracy. In addition, commonly used percussion methods create noise and vibrations when the piles are hit, while there are advantages that thinner piles are available, ensuring earthquake-resistance, as tilted piles curb horizontal displacements of structures, which may be caused by earthquake ground motion. However, current requirements of cost reduction bring professional attention to tilted pile foundations, which can be driven reasonably and economically with much research of tilted piles having been carried out to improve their capacity. Also, a method of screwing piling has been developed, which produces small amounts of noise and vibrations. This method has solved tasks of workability and environmental burdens, and is becoming more and more common. However, there is a necessity to develop a method to accurately measure angles of piles’ axes in order to drive piles into the ground with appropriate angles. It is also expected to find out a way to control construction information, such as correction amount and driving record."
