It is possible to selectively mine an orebody by combining the use of the SSW probe with any bulk mining methods as well as narrow vein exploitations. In other words, thanks to the use of the SSW probe, mining operators will be able to reduce and control dilution that is generally associated to every mining operation. Already, quick and substantial savings have been obtained. Falconbridge mines have demonstrated in Sudbury and Raglan operations, that the SSW probe can log nickel, copper and iron sulphides in blast holes. They have raised the grade and reduced dilution by outlining the limits of the ore zones before selectively loading explosives in the blast holes. By lowering the probe in a blast hole, a profile of the ore content is instantly measured and recorded. Logging cored diamond drill holes at the mine have demonstrated that the ore content (nickel, copper, cobalt, PGM) as assayed is proportional to the intensity of the probe?s electromagnetic response (EM), probably because the nickel / pyrrhotite ratio is uniform within a given orebody. The probe also measures the intrinsic conductivity of the sulphides and the percentage of magnetite. All probe readings are displayed and automatically stored at a 10-cm interval within the same reading unit. A 30-meter blast hole takes less than 2 minutes to survey. The whole instrument is light (12 kg) and very simple to use. One operator can carry the SSW system and survey either down or up-holes. The probe works from ?40°C to +50°C. Plotting the measurements of the SSW probe in blast holes (2-3-4-6-10 inches in diameter) before blasting allows to determine the exact shape of the orebody within the waste rock and uneconomic low-grade ore. Thus, only the portion of the holes that contains ore is blasted. The dilution is then much reduced and, by leaving the waste and low-grade ore in place, the mine saves on transportation, blasting, crushing, backfilling, milling, etc. Thousands of dollars are thus saved. Some savings may also be achieved during the development of stopes by guiding development drifts and by replacing diamond drilling by percussion drilling. In some circumstances, when the probe shows that some of the rich ore was not drilled-off, additional blast holes will allow to recover pockets of rich ore that otherwise would have been abandoned in the walls of a stope.

The North Saskatchewan River flows southwest to northeast through a 22-km-long valley in the City of Edmonton, supplying the drinking water to dozens of downstream communities. During heavy rains, combined sewers occasionally overflow into the river, which has a significant negative impact on the water quality and the sensitive environment. The West Edmonton Sanitary Sewer (WESS) W12, a syphon connecting the Rat Creek Trunk to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant across the river, was designed and constructed to take the overflow to the wastewater treatment plant. Due to the complexity of the project, various 3D technologies were applied to facilitate decision-making processes. 3D models were developed for design review and design conflict detection, while 4D models were established to help create a robust construction schedule. Construction sequencing animation was used to convey design intents and demonstrate construction stages to contractors and workers. The combined applications of 3D technologies helped the project team to identify critical issues, and assured effective communication among engineers, management, contractors, and other parties. Therefore, it provided more opportunities for the success of the project.

"Environmental concerns have recently been growing over the disposal of reactive desulphurizing slag. Consequently, increased pressure has been placed on the foundry industry to reduce the reactivity of this slag.To address this problem, Cyanamid has developed a new product which significantly reduces the calcium carbide content of the desulphurizing slag. Testing equipment and procedures have also been developed to evaluate both the existing levels of carbide in the slag and the decreased levels which are achieved with this new material.The development and use of this engineered carbide desulphurizer has made possible significant environmental and efficiency improvements in the field of calcium carbide desulphurizing. Consequently, the lifespan of calcium carbide in ductile iron desulphurization has been increased, as have the benefits of its use in the foundry industry. IntroductionIn the production of ductile iron, calcium carbide has long been used for hot metal desulphurization external to the cupola. Its cost effectiveness, reliability and ease of use have traditionally made it the desulphurizer of choice for a great majority of ductile operations. Recently however, environmental concerns have been raised regarding the quantity of calcium carbide remaining in the slag after desulphurizing. Analysis has shown that as much as 25070 of the weight of the slag may contain active carbide. "The Schist Lake mine, owned and operated by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, is situated on the northwest arm of Schist Lake, 4 miles southeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba.The deposit was discovered early in 1947, during a diamond drilling program exploring small copper showings along the west shore of the lake. The orebodies came to surface between the mainland and the north end of Stitt Island.Production began in August, 1954, at an initial rate of 300 tons per day. Underground workings have been carried to the 1,700-foot level, where exploration work is now being done.General GeologyRocks of the area are Precambrian lava flows, with associated pyroclastic breccias and tuffs, and related minor intrusions. Their general strike is northwest and their dip is nearly vertical. Shearing is common and is related to the activity which caused intense folding and much faulting in the area. The larger faults and the fold axes trend a few degrees west of north. The lavas are mainly andesitic but a layer of sericite-carbonate schist, which is probably derived from a fine-grained, grey quartz porphyry, occupies most of Stitt Island and extends into the mine area. It is within this layer of schist that the ore deposit occurs (Figure 1).The OrebodiesThe ore occurs as tabular to lens-shaped bodies which strike northwest, dip nearly vertically, and plunge at 60 degrees to the southeast. The ore zone is 800 feet long and has been traced for a distance of 2,000 feet along the plunge (Figure 2). The maximum length of continuous ore within this zone is 200 feet. Widths of individual ore lenses vary from a maximum of 35 feet to a minimum of 2 feet.The ore consists of three distinct types: massive sphalerite-pyrite, massive chalcopyrite-sphalerite, and disseminated chalcopyrite-pyrite. The No. 1, or eastern, orebody is predominantly massive sphalerite-pyrite. The western part of the No. 2 orebody is massive chalcopyrite-sphalerite. The disseminated ore forms the eastern part and the lower end of the No. 2 orebody. All three types of ore, with patchy distribution, are found in the smaller lenses below the 1, 100-foot level.Metallic minerals, in order of deposition, are pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, galena, enargite, and gold. Both massive types of ore exhibit banding in many places, probably as a result of the selective replacement of schist. The disseminated ore was formed as a filling of the interstices in a brittle chert rock which appears to have been crushed by the same forces which produced the schist."

That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. In these days, when mass production seems to be the watchword of all industrial companies, nothing is left undone to attain this end. Transportation, where necessary, becomes a question of very great importance. For this reason every mechanical contrivance known to man is employed, with its resultant advantages. So successful has man's ingenuity been that, offhand, we are inclined to say that practically all transportation ?On a large scale is done mechanically, that is, where speed and economy are desiderata. Granting this, one would think that to read a paper on the horse before your honourable and highly technical Society would surely be a waste of time, and that any Company employing old-fashioned 'horse' power would certainly be very much behind the time, to say the least. However, the fact remains that the biggest industry in our country today-coal mining-must use horse power to a great extent, being compelled both by considerations of economy and by necessity. For this reason,' in the production of coal under present conditions, the pit horse is of great importance to this industry and is to be considered seriously as one of the units that help to make coal mining a success or a failure. Hence, in employing horses as a power for transportation, care must be exercised in selecting the animals, and the care of this power must be considered as seriously as any other department of such an organization. In selecting a pit horse, several things must be borne in mind, that is, one must get as much horse power as possible in as compact a form is practicable. This determines the type of horse we must use, which is of very great importance under our present conditions of coal mining. With low roof, steep grades, and forced production, a distinct type of animal must be selected.

Le Camp Minier de Matagami est situé dans la ceinture volcano-sédimentaire Harricana- Turgeon appartenant à la Province du Supérieur, sous-province de l?Abitibi, au Québec. Les gisements de métaux de base polymétalliques sont retrouvés exclusivement dans les deux domaines lithotectoniques comprenant l?association basalte-rhyolite (Matagami-Brouillan et Joutel-Raymond). Tous ces dépôts, à l?exception de ceux de Selbaie, sont de type exhalatif et représentent des dépôts volcanogènes à Zn-Cu, typiques de l?Archéen. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est constitué principalement de deux phases de volcanisme tholéïtique. Les dacites et les rhyolites du Groupe de Watson, représentent la phase la plus précoce et celles-cis sont recouvertes par la seconde phase qui est constituée majoritairement de roches intermédiares à mafiques intercalées d?horizons felsiques, formant le Groupe de Wabassee. Un sédiment chimique sulfuré, la Tuffite Clef, marque le contact et l?hiatus entre ces deux groupes. Cette tuffite est reconnue à la grandeur du flanc sud du camp minier et représente l?horizon favorable à explorer puisque sa déposition a correwspond à une période d?intense activité hydrothermale. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est limité au nord et au sud par des bandes sédimentaires orientées est-ouest, connues respectivement sous les noms de Groupe de Matagami et Groupe de Taïbi. Le Complexe intrusif de la Rivière Bell, qui occupe la base du Groupe de Watson, est un complexe lité consistant en une séquence stratifiée gabbroïque avec localement des niveaux stratiformes à concentrations d?oxydes magmatiques, la bordure de ce complexe est marquée par la présence d?un horizon granophyrique. Cette intrusion synvolcanique prétectonique, représente probablement la source de chaleur étant à l?origine de l?activité hydrothermale observée dans les roches volcaniques sus-jacentes. Suite à un levé aéroporté, le camp minier de Matagami a vu le jour en 1956 lors de la découverte du dépôt de Mattagami Lake, un gisement volcanogène de 25.6 millions de tonnes. Depuis ce temps, un total de neuf gisements ont été exploités et un dixième, Bell Allard, est présentement en production. En date du 31 décembre 1999, la production historique du camp s?élevait à plus de 41 millions de tonnes. Cette présentation mettra l?accent sur la géologie des récentes découvertes dans le prolifique camp minier de Matagami. Les ressources publiées pour le dépôt Persévérance sont de 947,000 tonnes titrant 19.12% Zn, 1.37% Cu, 32 g/t Ag et 0.40 g/t Au. Deux autres découvertes, Équinoxe et Persévérance Ouest contibueront à la ressource globale. Les trois dépôts sont situés au niveau de la Tuffite Clef même si les roches sus-jacentes ne sont pas celles typiquement observées dans les autres dépôts du flanc sud. Ces découvertes sont le résultat d?un programme d?exploration ciblé et soutenu, démontrant ainsi la possibilité de découvrir de nouvelles ressources même dans les camps miniers comme Matagami qui ont été explorés intensivement depuis plus d?un demi-siècle.

"After a blast, the volume of the blasted rock normally occupies more space that it did before the explosion. The degree of such swell significantly affects the efficiency of digging the muck with a shovel or dragline. This paper explains why swell occurs, and describes the new subroutine SWELL of the blast simulator BLASP A which can simulate blast-induced swell. Results are also presented which display the effect of various blasting parameters on the degree and distribution of the swell within the muck pile of a bench blast. IntroductionIt is a common opinion that fragmentation is the most important of the various aspects which affect the efficiency of excavating rock with explosives. This paper proposes that, in fact, displacement and swell of the blasted rock are as important as fragmentation if the excavation process is to be rapid and efficient. It must ""a priori"" be recognized that a minimum degree of fragmentation is indeed necessary. For a given shovel or dragline, this minimum degree of fragmentation may be defined as follows: even the largest fragment of rock must be easily contained within the bucket. Once this criterion is met, however, there are good reasons to believe that displacement and swell take over as the key criteria which influence the rate of mucking, in cubic metres/hour. If the muck pile is not well displaced and swelled, the teeth of the bucket have difficulty penetrating between the rock fragments even if fragmentation is good and, as a result, the mucking is slow and inefficient. The purpose of this paper is to use computer simulations on the model BLASP A to demonstrate the effect of the blast design parameters on the displacement and swell of the blasted rock."

"In order to obtain the equipment necessary to automate the equipment it was decided that the Department of Mines and Milltronics would jointly survey the circuit. This survey involved a metallurgical study by the Department of Mines and Milltronics took sound recordings during manual operation, checking in circuit bottle necks and determining the number of sensors that could be applied.The conveyer is driven by 2 PIV drives, each has a variable speed of 3/ 1. The cross conveyer that feeds directly into the rod mill feed chute will contain an automatic sampler and will eliminate the necessity of stopping the belt feeders to take samples. At present, hourly samples are taken from this point and the circuit is upset and cycling results.The Adequate scale is very close to the rod mill to totalize and thereby give a continuous indication and the second purpose is to take a signal from it and control the solution addition to the rod mill.A pneumatic positioner was obtained and put on the scale which produces a 3 tp 15 psi signal which is proportional to the actual tonnage going across the scale. This signal was fed to a bias loader which was mounted on the control panel. From there the operator can set the amount of solution that is wanted by the rod mill. No matter what the feed rate is, the signal coming from the bias loader will follow it automatically. This in turn goes to the pneumatic solution valve (1 ½” ) and the solution goes in with the feed to the rod mill. This is only part of the solution required for dilution since the rest of it is used as a force jet for the feed to the rod mill."

"Modular Mining's computerized LHD position monitoring and dispatching system commenced operation at the De Beers Finsch Mine in mid- J99J. A sophisticated blend of proven and new technologies links the dispatcher at the workstation console on the surface with the LHD operators several hundred metres below. The dispatcher allocates each LHD to a priority tip and loading drive based on instructions provided by the miners and shift bosses underground. LHD operators receive tip and loading drive allocations on the vehicle computer console which communicates data via a Leaky Feeder radio network. The operators interact with the console to notify the dispatcher of delays, breakdowns, and changes in tip and tunnel status. The underground terminal displays allow shift bosses to monitor the progress of the LHDs as they pass infrared beacons (IRs) located in the tips loading drives and rim tunnel main haulage ways. The terminals also provide on-line statistics for the current and previous shifts. Future enhancements include optimized dispatching and interfacing to a PLC system controlling ventilation. Further, token ring-based loop UHF radios are being investigated as an alternative to the Leaky Feeder data radio network. IntroductionFinsch first contacted Modular about an LHD monitoring and dispatching system in late 1988. At that time, Modular declined a request for a formal quotation but agreed to perform an engineering feasibility study. The study was issued in mid-1989 and confirmed Finsch's belief that an underground system could be developed with technology available at that time. A contract for the system was signed the following year and, in May of 1991, the system began operation. By the end of 1991, LHDs on both production levels of the mine were under the control of the system."

"Several recent cases indicate that the Courts may be leaning toward a more favourable treatment of mine closing and related costs. In this article, we look at two recent cases, Burnco Industries Ltd. and Nomad Sand & Gravel Ltd. The former was heard before the Federal Court - Trial Division and the latter before the Tax Review Board.It appears that in certain situations mining companies may now be able to sustain current deductibility of estimated mine closing costs during the productive years of the mine, rather than waiting until either the date on which mining ceases or the reclamation and similar activities commence. This would be of great benefit to the mining industry, as waiting until the bitter end often means that there are no revenues available against which the expenses may be offset and, hence, no tax relief.IntroductionUnder the Income Tax Act in Canada, taxpayers are not permitted any deductions in respect of an outlay or expense in determining income from a business or property, except to the extent that such expenditures are made or incurred by the taxpayer for the purpose of gaining or producing income. In addition, no deductions are permitted for amounts transferred or credited to a reserve, contingent account or sinking fund except as expressly permitted by the Act.In large measure, these provisions are relevant to the mining industry to the extent that they determine the periods during which expenses may be charged against revenues for income tax purposes. Several recent cases have indicated that the Courts are leaning toward a more favourable treatment of accrued costs in the mining industry than was previously considered to be the case."

"Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular the dependence of the toughness of type 410 stainless steel on its tempering temperature and the susceptibility of that steel to quench cracking are highlighted because problems have been caused by both of these metallurgical factors.IntroductionAs part of a desire to improve the efficiency of a fifty-year old hydro-electric generating station on the Saint John River, the decision was made to change the journal and bearing material for the shaft bearings, which are stave-type bearings. For the initial fifty years of operation the bearings had been wooden (lignum vitae) and had run on the carbon steel shaft directly. For one of the four unit s at this station the performance of this combination has been truly excellent, and the remaining three sets of bearings had performed well. However there had been shaft wear on the units and the wear had made the shafts somewhat elliptical when a decision was made to install some sort of new journal on to three of the old shafts. [In addition to the wear on the carbon steel journals it was found that one shaft was significantly softer in the bearing area than it was immediately above the bearings (180 Vickers in comparison with 230 to 250 Vickers)] ."

"The prospective Tulks volcanic belt hosts five significant massive sulfide deposits, Tulks Prospect, Tulks East, Jack's Pond, Daniel's Pond and Victoria Mine, as well as numerous showings and indications throughout its 70 km outcrop length. Regionally, the 498 Ma sequence consists dominantly of felsic pyroclastic rocks and flows with interbedded mafic volcanic units and finegrained sediments, commonly graphitic. Contemporaneous granitoid rocks occur in the south half of the belt. Rocks usually display a strong NE-SW, steeply dipping, penetrative foliation and other shear-related high-strain fabrics. Facing directions are normally northwest, although there is local evidence of folding. Sulfide bodies and their alteration systems are deformed and shape-modified in the style of ambient strain.The Tulks, Tulks East and Jack's Pond prospects appear to occupy a similar stratigraphic level, on or near the contact between a thick felsic pile and an overlying broad, conductive package of graphitic sedimentary rocks. All are pyritic deposits with well-developed footwall alteration systems. The Tulks prospect comprises four polymetallic lenses totalling 750 000 t. Three lenses constituting more than 6 000 000 t of sulfide mineralization are indicated at Tulks East but only the 210 000 t ""B"" lens contains significant base metals. Jack's Pond consists of a very extensive, zoned alteration complex in which four lenses of massive to semi-massive pyrite + chalcopyrite are known. The central part of the system, characterized by Mg chlorite and carbonate, is enveloped by pervasive sericitization and capped by intensely silicified and pyritized volcanics. The sulfide lenses are interpreted as part of the footwall zone and are beneath that part of the system most likely to hostpolymetallic massive sulfides.Daniel's Pond differs from the other prospects in such fundamental ways as metal content, associated alteration and structural setting. The deposit comprises strongly tectonized, Ag-rich, Zn-Pb mineralization distinguished by a pronounced Ba-As-Sb signature. Mineralization is confined to a narrow, north-south high-strain zone which separates unstrained mafic volcanic rocks to the east from well-foliated felsic rocks. The deposit lacks an extensive alteration halo and at its north end is associated with a lens of barren, undeformed massive pyrite.The Victoria Mine deposit, the most cupriferous of the five, is related to a moderately dipping structure that separates well-foliated Tulks volcanic rocks from an overlying, less deformed volcanic sedimentary sequence that may be as young as 462 Ma. The structure is also the locus of black chlorite, dolomite and quartz alteration. Structurally remobilized precursor sulfide mineralization is one possible source for the deposit."

"In June 1983, the Computer Applications and Process Control Committee (CAPC) of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) circulated a questionnaire to coal mining, exploration and consulting companies in Canada to determine the industry's level of interest in holding a workshop-style meeting to introduce company personnel to ""state-of-the-art "" computer systems designed to carry out specific technical and management junctions. It was necessary to conduct the survey to determine the specific fields of application and the nature of training which are of most interest.Almost universally, the companies expressed interest in computer workshops and training for applications in the Canadian coal industry. The survey showed that all categories of personnel felt the need for some sort of training. Areas of specific interest identified were: exploration and geology, mine design, reserve calculations, coal mining technology, coal preparation, rock mechanics, ventilation, financial planning, and process simulation. The details of this survey together with an assessment of the significance of computer applications in the Canadian coal industry are presented in this paper."

"Very seldom, if ever, is a molybdenite by-product plant operated exactly the way the process design engineer visualizes it. The best thing the design engineer can do is provide a sound, basic circuit with enough room and flexibility in order that the operating staff can make the necessary modi fi cations to optimize the process. The plant, with minor modifications, should be capable of handling more than one process. This is especially true when the client is having the plant designed for a new process.The writer would like to propose the following ten ""rules-of thumb"" for designing by-product molybdenite plants where the molybdenite is floated out of a copper concentrate. The term rules-of-thumb is used, because there are probably valid reasons for not using one or more of them in a particular plant design. In fact it was 1980 before the writer was all owed to start up a plant where all of these rules were honored in the plant design. This was after 19 years of experience in the design of molybdenite by-product processes and plants. The main reasons for not following the rules are available capital, available space, and the client's experiences based on pilot plant and laboratory test results."

"Very little attention was given to the regulation of uranium mills by the Atomic Energy Control Board prior to 1974. The ore grade treated by Canadian mills in the past was in the order of 0.08 - 0.3% U and it was not difficult to keep the exposure of workers well below regulatory limits. Furthermore, uranium milling has also been substantially free of occupational illness because environmental control has been generally satisfactory (l).The discovery of higher grade ore bodies in Canada has resulted in higher radiation levels in one mill and this has partly contributed to a need for increased radiation monitoring in the mill. It is based on the premise that no proven threshold for potential effects of radiation exists and that the actual individual exposure should therefore be kept as far below the regulatory limit as possible, economic and social factors being taken into account."
