The paper describes some of the economic and human factors associated with haulroads on Mount Whaleback, a large open pit iron ore mine. These factors have combined to encourage formation of a specialised road maintenance crew which caters for haulroad construction and maintenance. Techniques used for design, construction, operation and management of haulroads are then described. Future developments are expected to effectively lower construction costs leading to an even wider application of the techniques described and consequent improvement in temp- orary roads and overall truck performance. INTRODUCTION Mount Whaleback is a large truck/shovel open pit iron ore mine located in the Pilbara region of north Western Australia. Annual production capacity exceeds 100 million tonnes per annum of waste and ore. The truck haulage fleet comprises WABCO 120 52 WABCO 3200 22 74 of which approximately 45 are operating at one time.

It is argued that the capture of par- ticles by bubbles is primarily caused by hydrophobic ("structural") attraction forces. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. The recent experiments of Israelachvili and Pashley (Nature, 300: 341-342, 1982) with hydrophobic mica plates provide the first measurements of the range and magni- tude of hydrophobic interaction forces.

In the recent past a number of smelting plants were commissioned in India to supply the rising demand by domestic steelworks for manganese-based ferroalloys, and they enjoyed cheap electric power and readily available high-grade manganese ore. Presently, the cost of electric power is much higher than in some neighbouring countries, there continues to be poor transport infrastructure and the prices of high-grade manganese ore have increased. Additionally, the Indian Government has opened its economy to the outside world, resulting in the import duties on ferroalloys being drastically reduced. In this paper the current situation in India will be detailed, the electric arc furnace and blast furnace smelting methods for ferroalloys compared and proposals for the construction of a new ferromanganese blast furnace in India outlined. The future of ferroalloy smelters in India will be assessed and actions which could be taken to improve their position discussed.

In a technologically oriented industry, it is important to understand and apply technology very consciously to create competitive advantage. Technology is not an activity which is simply restricted to CSIRO or the research and technology department. Technology improvement is a part of everyone's role. It is a way of life - the technology facet of continuous improvement. For this reason, The AusIMM has organised this Travelling Technology Forum - a series of presentations about automation in mining. To make the message more accessible, The AusIMM had originally planned to take the Forum to four regional mining centres: Mackay/Townsville, Singleton, Burnie and Kalgoorlie, but only one seminar was held, ie at Singleton in March 1997. Seminars at other locations were cancelled because of insufficient registrants. The presentation by Andrew Logan of BHP Cannington was not available for the Singleton forum. The aims of the forum were: ò to heighten awareness of the key technologies and their impact in the minerals industry in the medium term; ò to foster creative thinking; ò to encourage people to broaden their technical and commercial skills and develop individual networks and linkages based on an interest in these key technologies; ò to share information on the application of these technologies in the industry; ò to promote an enhanced appreciation of the need for an innovative culture; and ò to encourage staff to consider post graduate courses in technology management. The AusIMM wanted to not only raise awareness about `automation in mining' issues, but also to get technology in a more general sense back onto `centre stage'. The Forum was generously supported by CSIRO, Western Mining Corporation Ltd, BHP Coal Ltd, Aberfoyle Limited, Goldfields Ltd, Novacoal Australia Pty Ltd, Pasminco Ltd, and RGC Limited. The program was endorsed by the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Copies of the full papers are available from the authors, see `References'.

New geological and geophysical in vestigation including our detailed field observation in different regions of the Koryak upland testify that Nor- theastern Eurasia margin eastward of the Ochotsk-Chukotka belt is composed of a collage of allochtonous terranes arcs and sedimentary filling of back- arc basins, which bordered North East Siberia and Chukotka (1)1). Ancient island are assemblages are the most tipical for this region (2-4; shown by heavy line). They are marked by long (500-1000 km) volcanic belts which become younger towards the Pacific up the Latest Jurassic-Neocomi- an (2) to Late Cretaceous (3) and Pale- Gene (4).

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

The effect of various methods of conditioning on subsequent flotation performance was reviewed, where complex interactions involving attrition, aggregation, dispersion and surface cleaning were discussed. The present study focussed on the influences of standard laboratory cell conditioning, ultrasonic dispersion and high intensity conditioning on copper mineral flotation characteristics. The effect of substituting demineralised water for the WMC plant water was also examined. It was found that higher copper concentrate grades were often obtained using demineralised water, however the use of high intensity conditioning in mill water gave the highest copper recovery and highest flotation rate constant. This process should be considered if copper grade and recovery in this section of the plant drops, especially if the drop is due to surface oxidation of the copper minerals. Other methods of conditioning (cell and ultrasonic techniques) improved the rate of copper flotation above that obtained in the virtual absence of conditioning, showing the importance of conditioning on subsequent flotation operations.

This paper focuses on measures of the economic significance of mineral exploitation and processing activities, such as beneficiation, refining and smelting. Empirical measures are suggested to quantify the relevance of the degree processing within a nation's mineral industry. The most useful, based on the input-output econometric framework, are used to establish the magnitude of links between the mineral industry and its satellite activities and for the appraisal of large, non-marginal projects. The input-output impact analysis is refined to allow for country specific behaviour and synthetic indices for the appraisal of investments in the mineral sector are developed. These indices are further improved with the introduction of shadow prices to incorporate socio-economic issues. They are useful to direct mineral policy decisions and several investments towards the most promising objectives for national goals. Finally traditional methods for the appraisal of small scale, marginal, mineral projects are assessed where local impact and regional development issues are more relevant than national ones.

A critical concern of any mining company today is its relationship with the different stakeholder groups impacted by the operational activity û communities, unions, vendors, local partners and competitors, local and federal governments, interest groups and non-government organisations. What ten years ago would have gone unnoticed, now, and even more so in the future, can drastically impact the profitability and even existence of a mining operation. This paper describes the development and delivery of a new paradigm for creating effective external stakeholder relationships. We report on the actual measurable results of an integrated and highly complex initiative led by Lonmin Plc (Lonmin) and Landmark Education Business Development (LEBD) that significantly altered the nature of the relationship with the stakeholders. Given the nature of the long-term investment required in a mining operation, any breakdowns or surprises in its relationship with external stakeholders brings with it the potential for major loss. The transformation of executive and senior management and community leadership was required to enable them to be effective in managing this complex set of circumstances.

Examination of wastes aimed at evaluation of their usefulness for utilisation needs applying modern chemical testing methods. The XRD-XRF-ICP-GC/MS set of test methods constitutes an integrated testing system enabling ecochemical examination of wastes. As far as the problem of time-consuming operations is concerned, the offered system fits in a market-oriented field of activity of accredited chemical laboratories. Within a reasonable period of time, it allows to obtain information about mineralogical and chemical properties of wastes. It provides full range of information beginning from mineral composition (XRD) through chemical composition including the number of elements and organic compounds (XRF-ICP-GC/MS) up to the contents relating to the amounts of ingredients, both organic and inorganic in the leaching tests (ICP-GC/MS). The XRD-XRF-ICP-GC/MS testing system proves to be of particular importance in obtaining reliable results enabling to perform precise assessment (from ecochemical point of view) of wastes to evaluate their usefulness for utilisation in building materials, in civil engineering and reclamation works.

Mine dewatering has long been a problem with mines and some of the shallowest mines have the biggest problems. Machinery was developed by the ancients for raising water by rope buckets with treadmills or by horse whim. From the 1700's on into the early part of this century, massive cornish pumps or equivalent were the vogue powered by steam. One Australian mine pumping system was claimed to be the largest in the world just after the turn of the century. It was installed at Beaconsfield in Tasmania and the mine, like so many other mines of the period, were beaten by problems and cost associated with mine dewatering. The owners of that mine are looking at the feasibility of dewatering using surface drilled wells. Much simpler and smaller pumps are the order now and it is feasible to use boreholes instead of shafts to contain the pumps or else to use the holes to convey discharge waters to the surface from pumps located in drives or stopes.

In June 1976 a 600'tonne/day manganese ore sinter machine, with on-strand cooling, was commissioned at the plant of Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company Pty. Ltd. at Bell Bay, Tasmania. This machine was installed in order to utilize manganese lump ore screenings generated in the preparation of raw materials prior to charging to the electric smelting furnaces at Bell Bay. Since commissioning, trial sintering of a number of different grades of manganese ore fines from Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Ltd, has been conducted and suitable sinter has been produced from these different grades. The sinter produced is used as part of the furnace burden in both ferro manganese production and silico manganese production. The inclusion of sinter as part of the charge in the production of ferro manganese has considerably improved furnace operating conditions and performance.

Computer programs for the storage, retrieval and use of basic thermodynamic and physical property data for chemical substances are described. Methods are presented for the collection, critical assessment and pre- processing of source data for files containing enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity data for 3000 compounds, enthalpy and excess entropy for 200 dilute solutions and critical propert- ies and vapour pressure for 600 compounds. Retrieval programs are discussed which allow the tabulation or plotting of many basic and derived thermodynamic properties for chemical substances or balanced reactions. Examples are given of the use of such data to infer the stability or corrosion resistance of materials and the feasibility, yield and heat release of reactions. A general purpose calculation program is discussed which allows the equilibrium compos- ition to be found for complex systems with many species and phases, using the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Methods of correction for non-ideal behaviour in these systems are discussed, as well as methods for fixing, maximizing or minimizing any desired property of the system. Examples are given of the simulation of various laboratory Experiments and industrial processes by this method.

New England Antimony Mines has operated the Hillgrove Gold Plant at Hillgrove in New South Wales since 1969, producing stibnite and arsenopyrite products by selective flotation. Gold is present in the ore as fine free gold, gold associated with stibnite and gold associated with arsenopyrite, with some ten to 20 per cent of the gold reporting to the antimony stream and 35 - 50 per cent reporting to the arsenopyrite stream. Opportunity to process the arsenopyrite concentrate for onsite recovery of the gold values to improve upon the ten per cent recovery achieved by conventional cyanidation was recognised and subject to comparison with biological oxidation, roasting, nitric acid oxidation, low temperature oxidation (Activox«) and conventional pressure oxidation. Following further testwork and a feasibility study, a 7500 tonnes per annum concentrate feed pressure oxidation autoclave circuit was constructed at Hillgrove and commissioned in October 1999. The plant has operated at the close to design capacity since commissioning whilst optimising various operational and metallurgical aspects. The last three years has seen the process achieve an overall gold recovery of greater than 90 per cent for oxidised concentrates.

Engineering availability of the 120/200 tonne Wabco haulpak fleet at Mt. Whaleback was in the mid fifties and unstable. The project to achieve a reliable 66% during 1980 highlighted "plannable" maintenance, short cycle scheduling, condition monitoring, backlog control, and, above all, the importance of involving all affected people. It is not sufficient for consultants to design systems and make them work. The people who use the system must understand it, support it and "own" it. In this way, they will develop it and improve results after the outside help has been withdrawn INTRODUCTION In early 1979, PA proposed a programme to improve engineering availability of the Mt. Newman Mining fleet of 70 Wabco haulpak trucks of which 53 were 120 tonne and 17 were 200 tonne units. (Subsequently five 200 tonne trucks from Hamersley Iron were added to the fleet). The ore truck workshop was also responsible for 75 tonne trucks used as water trucks and general purpose vehicles. The need for action was clear. A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

Improving the understanding of the processes governing ground movements in and around brown coal open cuts is of significant interest for both operating stability and rehabilitation. Brown coal, lignite, is a low-rank coal that is best described as a soft rock, with geotechnical characteristics that derive from its organic origin. It is well-known that low-rank coals exhibit creep behaviour; however, little has been reported on the impacts of chemical processes on brown coal creep behaviour even though organic substances are susceptible to chemical alterations and mining processes will contribute to changes to the geochemical environment; around most mines, groundwater flow patterns are altered leading to enhanced surface water infiltration. Here we study the deformation behaviour of brown coal in response to ion exchange reaction. Our experimental results show that for different ion exchange conditions different characteristics of secondary compression are observed. With the addition of Ca2+, the ratio between coefficients of secondary and primary compression (Ca /Cc) initially decreased, presenting a minimum value at the concentration of 0.005?M, then increased significantly. This implies the importance of ion exchange process for the long-term deformation of brown coal. On the other hand, increasing Na+ concentration did not affect Ca /Cc values significantly over all tested concentrations. The suppression of diffuse double layer was still observed for Na+-treated samples as increasing Na+ concentration decreases Ca values. Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

The new field of environmental investiga tions introduces new problems of ethics, res- ponsibility, conflict of interest and technical procedures. Such investigations involve four elements: developer, consultant, approving authority and the public. It is essential that the consultant provide technical competence, speed and efficiency, impartiality and credibi- lity. Despite allegations to the contrary, it is not in the consultant's own best interest to omit, ignore or obscure significant adverse en vironmental impacts.
