Excavation engineering involves complex processes for primary and secondary extraction of materials. The shovel excavators bear varying mechanical energy input and stress loading across the working bench during excavation. These varying mechanical energy input and stress loading effects cause significant wear and tear and fatigue failure in equipment components. These effects further result in unplanned downtimes, reduced efficiency and high production costs. In addition, the mechanical and electrical control systems must be operated in efficient profiles to generate maximum outputs and efficiency from these excavators. Efficient technologies are therefore required to solve these problems in order to reduce production costs and increase efficiency. In this paper, the authors develop a rigorous simulator for a hydraulic shovel in a surface mining environment. The finite element model is used to capture the stress profile within the shovel components during excavation, such as, the bucket, stick and boom assemblies. The profiles are classified into normal, critical and extreme ranges, with appropriate corrective measures to avoid extreme loading conditions. The loading capability of shovel excavators can be examined by assessing its structural strength against all possible maximum loads working on the equipment. The dynamic model is used to define efficient profiles of the critical structural components of hydraulic shovels during digging operation. This assessment is used to locate the maximum possible loads and the critical sections of the structures. The method presented in this paper forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for efficient shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

An extended Kalman Filter is used to build an on-line estimator of total ore, fine ore and water hold-ups in a SAG mill. In addition, an equivalent grinding rate from coarse to fine ore, as well as the discharge rates of solids (fines) and water are also estimated as part of the adaptation procedure of the model used for the Kalman Filter. The measurements used in the Kalman Filter estimator are the total mill weight provided by load cells, and inferred discharge flows of fines and water from flow and density measurements performed downstream. The net ore and water feed to the SAG mill are used as inputs to the estimator, and also the proportion of fine ore in the feed. As an example of how to introduce robustness in the estimation in the face of sensor bias errors, an estimation of the load cell bias error is introduced in the estimator, thus providing self calibration. The estimator presented in this paper has been tested by simulation using a detailed SAG mill mechanistic dynamic model comprising 27 size fractions well fitted to a pilot mill. The maximum error in the estimation of the operational variables - total and fine ore as well as the mill contents under different operating conditions - is about ten per cent.

The use of operational research in mining is illustrated by simple examples of the techniques of simulation, linear programming, theory of sampling, and experimental design.Statistical simulation of the delays in answering telephones was used to compare the efficiency of alarm systems in collieries, and to determine stock control policy for a bin in mucking, filling, and tramming operations. Linear programming was used to help minimize transportation costs between collieries and washeries. The theory of sampling was applied to separate and balance the components of error introduced at the' various stages in the collection and reduction of routine samples of coal, and to the assessment of errors of estimates of grade in orebodies from drill samples. 'l'he principles of experimentaldesign were used to compare wear of different conveyor beltings and costs of battery and diesel locomotives in underground transport.INTRODUCTIONIn operational research some of the procedural techniques and professional attitudes of mind found among scientists and, in particular, mathematicians and statisticians, are applied to operational problems in industry ranging from policy making in the broadest sense to the humblest sampling procedures. These apply in mining equally with other industries.Anyone who reviews a procedure critically and in a systematic way may legitimately claim to be doing operational research. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore operations, run of mine ore from the several Newman Joint Venture (NJV) mines is railed in 12 kt rakes to Port Hedland. Rakes are processed sequentially, with the lump and fines components from each rake sampled after crushing and screening. The grade of ore from the individual mines varies around consistently different means. Although a discrete sample is attributed to each rake, the sample contains some material from the following and/or the preceding rakes due to dilution by ore from the neighbouring rakes during the dumping, screening and crushing processes. Individual rake grades at the port are therefore biased according to the mine sources of adjacently processed rakes. Dilution does not affect the grade of the overall NJV product or the accuracy of port stockpile grades; however, it does limit the ability to use port rake grades to review the quality performance of individual mines and provide meaningful lump-fines algorithms and port to mine biases for individual mines, information that is useful when scheduling ore for mining. A non-linear regression model has been used to estimate the average dilution from the preceding and following rakes. It has been shown that the lump and fines samples for 12 kt rakes are each diluted within the Port process with about 8.3 per cent of the sample coming from the preceding rake and about 3.6 per cent from the following rake. This can bias the reported rake grade by up to one per cent iron. The results of this analysis have been incorporated into the daily grade scheduling system to provide more accurate individual mine grade data and consequently better decision making.

Sydney is the capital city of NSW and has a population of approximately four million people. Eighty per cent of the cityÆs water is supplied by Warragamba Dam, which is situated some 75 kilometres south west of the city centre. A risk assessment was carried out on the dam and future predictions of water flows into the catchment area showed that there was a risk of a one in 700-year flood not being contained by the dam. The predicted loss of life and property damage warranted the construction of an auxiliary spillway on the eastern side of the existing dam to cater for any uncontrollable influx of water. A test blasting program was instigated and the blasting parameters were established that would lead to routine production blasting of the sandstone rock making it more cost effective to excavate. Blast induced vibrations were a concern to the owners and the dam wall and ancillary infrastructure was instrumented with sensitive vibration monitoring equipment during the test blasting phase of the operation. Once the blasting parameters were established from the testing program production blasting was carried out on a daily basis to maintain æstockpileÆ of fragmented ground for the excavation equipment. Blast vibration models were developed to predict vibration levels for more sensitive areas of the dam to give the operators more confidence in their operations. The blast induced vibration levels recorded did not cause any structural damage to the dam wall and the waveform frequencies of the blasting operation were much higher than that experienced during a recent earthquake. The integrity of the SCAÆs assets were at no time jeopardised.

The mineral sands deposit of Australia pose a number of unique, and quite unusual problems for the explorationist. Most concentrations of heavy minerals have been found in the unconsolidated sediments of the east and west coasts. Mineral sands mines open larger areas per tonne of concentrate than most other mines. This is because of the shallow depth of the sands containing the heavy mineral concentrations. Obtaining tenure can, by mining industry norms, be a massive operation due to the large areas to be examined and, particularly on the east coast, the large number of land holders encountered. A commercial development can still emanate from anything ranging from a small high grade body to a massive low grade deposit, the prices currently being obtained for rutile, zircon, ilmenite and monazite, although still modest when the remarkable properties and applications of these minerals are considered, is nevertheless attractive when compared to the prices being obtained for the base metals with the exception of gold. The current interest in the location and definition of new reserves of heavy minerals reflects this relative price attractiveness. The discovery of heavy mineral concentrates does not necessarily ensure the early establishment of a mine. Because of the cyclical nature of market prices, the average returns likely over the life of the mine permit the employment of only relatively simple, low cost, mining, concentration, and separation processes. If difficult mining conditions are encountered or the removal of small contaminants by complex metallurgical processes are required, then higher market prices must be obtained. Until the market is prepared to pay more for the commodities so produced, the resource will not be economic and lower cost reserves will be mined in preference. The Australian mineral sands industry has seen many closed mines because of past failures to properly assess the data base collected during the exploration and development phases of the failed projects.

Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: political û expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and legal û mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: early identification of risks û detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, control the cost of financing û risk margin applied to a project finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

The treatment of nickel ores and concentrates and the subsequent processing to recover separate products of nickel and cobalt is one of the major interests at present in the mining industry. The increasing demand for nickel, and more recently also cobalt, has led to increased exploration for ore sources. Major discoveries have resulted in Canada and Australia. These deposits, as well as others already known, are presently being developed and the process technology tested and evaluated for applicability to the different mineralogical types - mainly sulphide, arsenide and oxide laterites. Concentrates may be treated by either hydro- or pyrometallurgical processes, while the nickel laterites are best suited to hydrometallurgical processing. However, if hydrometallurgy is used, once the ore or concentrate is leached the resultant solutions are then amenable to similar separation technologies for purification and recovery of high purity nickel and cobalt products. Solvent extraction, together with other separation processes such as precipitation, can produce high purity solutions of nickel and cobalt. The final products of these solutions may be nickel and cobalt cathodes, metal powders precipitates or salts, depending on the final process of electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, precipitation, or crystallisation Respectively.

Mr. Gillie and Mr. Harris have given us a wealth of information and food for thought on the vital subject of information and food fo rthought on the vital subject of reducing costs and mention considerable saving in some of the larger items. There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. The management of safety has undergone a number of radical changes in the past 100 years. The most important paradigm shifts occurred through the work of Heinrich, followed by the advent of the safety systems era and, more recently, the behavioural safety approaches that have become increasingly popular around the world. Each of these æapproachesÆ to safety has left an indelible mark on the way we target safety improvements, helping decide which interventions are deployed and how they will be measured. They have also resulted in a number of æmythsÆ about safety management, each of which will be discussed, analysed and challenged in this paper. This paper highlights the complex problem of æcomplacencyÆ, that has arisen out of the increased levels of regulation and consequent perceived protection that workers enjoy in the work place. It also looks at a phenomenon called æaccident migrationÆ which results from a superficial treatment of accidents with changes to rules and procedures. The most recent approach to safety is generally known as behaviour-based safety, which flowed from the human sciences and quality management era. This approach has had a dramatic impact on the way safety is managed around the world, but still falls short in a number of key aspects, most notably the area of risk awareness and risk understanding. Many workplace accidents occur simply because the risk is unidentified, underestimated, not understood or ignored. This paper proposes a new direction for safety, called competency-based safety. It is based on cognitive psychology aimed at combating the consequence of modern protection. A case study is presented detailing the deployment of this approach throughout Placer Dome.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. This paper is a tribute to the late Dr Donald Martin Hausen as a father of applied mineralogy. His dedication to promoting the field through technical societies and through his professional work was outstanding, and his activities as a humanitarian are noteworthy. Dr HausenÆs involvement in technical societies included organising and conducting the only ICAM congress that was held in the USA, co-founding and nurturing the Process Mineralogy Committee within the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers, and participating in CAM, the International Mineral Processing Congress, as well as other technical societies. The Process Mineralogy Committee that he co-founded has continuously organised annual meetings in the USA by conducting a series of sessions, and 17 books on the proceedings from those sessions have been published. As an applied mineralogist Dr Hausen solved many problems in exploitation and processing of minerals, metals and materials, especially gold. He helped to find many Carlin-type gold orebodies by outlining targets using alteration halos as determined by X-ray diffractometry, and he defined mineral characteristics that affected gold metallurgy and cyanidation. It is also noteworthy that Dr Hausen and his wife, Mary, opened their arms and home to many foster children and were instrumental in their placement in many homes. They also sponsored refugees from south-east Asia, taught them English, housed them, and provided constant support until the refugees became responsible and independent US citizens.

The truly scientific method in the study of such questions at the present day is the reverse of that which was followed in the early days of geology, when after the observation of a few isolated facts, some great geological mind was led to a general theory, and humbler followers were only too apt to do mild violence to nature in order to make her facts conform to it tt accumulates year after year a multitude of facts of patient observation, supported by studies with the microscope, and in the laboratory, avoiding general theories, and only making such deductions in regard to locftl conditions as are supported by the overwhelming evidence of facts. The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

It is extraordinary that while Australia depends heavily on mineral wealth for its economic well-being, most Australians have no appreciation of the traditions and principles which drive and govern the mineral industry. Their understanding has been largely provided by those who campaign against the industry in one way or another and is therefore quite unrepresentative.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand.The reform of New Zealands minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New Zealands resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

Surface geological observations are predominantly two-dimensional but can be expanded into three dimensions using geophysical techniques. These techniques have proved succ- essful in the past and will be utilised more frequently in future mineral exploration. Geophysical training establishments must recog- nize future requirements and teach geophysics as part of a broad earth science course as well as a specialised geophysical course. Central- isation of teaching skills, the use of high- technology in the classroom, and greater interaction between academic and industry staff are recommended as a means of ensuring a vibrant geophysical training base in Australia, for the geophysicist of the future.
