Reliable predictions of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a final void are vital if mine operators propose to decommission final voids in open cut mining operations. The catchments feeding final voids typically comprise a large proportion of coal placed or re-shaped spoil piles. Spoil piles from open cut coal mining operations have distinctive hydrological characteristics, which result in unique run-off behaviour. There is a need to understand the nature of spoil hydrology processes in order to predict the long-term hydrological behaviour and water quality responses of such systems. Preliminary estimates indicate that it may take 20 or more years for a void to flood. It is impractical for mine owners and operators to wait until long-term hydrological and water quality conditions have been established in a void, before reaching agreement with regulators about mine closure conditions. Reliable simulation of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a void are therefore. The adoption of an agreed modelling approach and sharing of results from field data programs could result in the establishment of a database that could be used, with regulatory approval, for assigning parameter values, without the need for a specific data collection program for every individual void. Industry and regulators should agree on the model adopted for predicting post-closure behaviour of spoil/void systems. This will require reliable, robust methods for field data collection. This paper describes the field monitoring, data collection, model preparation and simulations undertaken over a three year period for Australian Coal Association Research Projects (ACARP) Project C7007. It presents the findings of that research, and provides comment on aspects of the project that were undertaken well and on aspects that could have been done better. Limited data is presented in this paper due to confidentiality arrangements with the relevant mine sites.

Bacterial leaching of sulfide minerals are fairly well established in heap, dump and in situ leaching and the primary bacterial treatment of refractory gold concentrate using CSTR have gained industrial prominence in recent years. Three cultures, a mesophile T ferrooxidans (DSM583), a moderate thermophile Sulfobacillus acidophilus (strain YTF1) and a extreme thermophile (Sulfolobus strain BC65) were used for the biooxidation (pre-treatment) of the Porgera gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under optimum O2 and CO2 enriched air (30 per cent O2 and ten per cent CO2) based on volume ratios. The positive effect of using oxygen and carbon dioxide enriched air for the biooxidation of gold-bearing pyrite mineral was clearly demonstrated where an increase in Fe release rate by a factor of 2.8, 1.8 and 1.5 for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively were observed compared with the shake flask tests. The lag phase observed with the other test conditions such as in shake flask or with air decreased by about 80 per cent for all three cultures. The average observed dissolved oxygen concentrations in the pulp for these tests were 8.7, 5.8 and 5.0 mg/L for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively, indicating that O2 was not limiting in these tests. The pulp redox potential was observed to increase with time for all tests coincident with the leaching rate and reaching a maximum of 663 mV, however the maximum value differs for each strain, with DSM583 exhibiting the highest followed by YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Biooxidation of pyrite under optimum gas enrichment at different pulp densities showed near total Iron extraction occurred for pulp densities of three, ten and 20 per cent (w/v). At high pulp densities, more so at 40 per cent than 30 per cent (w/v), the leaching rate decreased rapidly for tests with YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Monitoring of dissolved O2 shows that O2 demand increased with increasing pulp density and the average dissolved O2 concentration observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus at 40 per cent solids concentration was 1.0 mg/L and below, suggesting limiting oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions for these two cultures. The decrease in leaching rate observed at high pulp densities (30 and 40 per cent) under optimum gas enrichment was accompanied by low metal dissolution and low redox potential values which was attributed to shear stress due to attrition of cells by high solids concentration, toxicity of metal ions especially Ag and Fe and the formation of precipitates and jarosites as confirmed from XRD analysis of leach residues hence impeding the leaching process. Limiting conditions due to high pulp density and viscosity were only observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus. The subsequent cyanide leaching for precious metals from the pre-treated pyrite concentrate in all cases shows the extent of gold and silver recovery increased with the degree of pyrite oxidation and Au and Ag recoveries in excess of 80 per cent were achieved compared with only 18.1 per cent and 35.9 per cent for gold and silver respectively when treated by direct cyanide leaching on the original, untreated concentrate.

The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operation at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry. Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle size distributions and brightness values have been prepared. Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the ore body is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins. The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW). The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. Presently, orebody modelling consists basically of fitting a mathematical model to represent spatially a certain geological variable, generally grade. An orebody model is constructed from a set of sample data obtained from various locations in the orebody, thus it is only one form of representation of the true phenomena. Checking the compatibility of the data with the modelling procedure is the most important factor when assessing confidence in the orebody model. The level of confidence in the model will depend on the adequacy of the data set and the validity of the basic assumption required by the modelling method. Fractal geometry is one way of modelling the spatial distribution of a geological variable in an orebody geometry. Fractals can be used to interpolate the Z(x) geological variable at unsampled sites. The concepts of self similarity and self affinity that form the basic assumption of fractal geometry theory which areinvestigated. The population distribution of the geological variable in question must be examined to determine the appropriateness of both fractal geometry and geostatistical modelling methods. The selection of the most appropriate method depends on the available data. A researcher or a practitioner needs to understand the strengths and limitations of the various modelling methods before choosing the most appropriate method. This study investigates the fractal properties of grade distribution using the variogram and some proposed variations as techniques to measure the fractalness. The aim is to assess applicability of fractal geometry theory to modelling ore grade distribution in a deposit. A comparison of the results demonstrates the methods which better capture the spatial behaviour of the variable under study.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Blast fragmentation can have a significant impact on the profitability of a mine. An optimum run of mine (ROM) size distribution is required to maximise the performance of downstream processes. If this fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, the operation will have made a significant advancement towards improving its performance. Blast fragmentation modelling is an important step in Mine to MillTM optimisation. It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions for a number of different rock mass, blast geometry, and explosive parameters. These distributions can then be modelled in downstream mining and milling processes to determine the optimum blast design. When a blast hole is detonated rock breakage occurs in two different stress regions û compressive and tensile. In the first region, compressive stress waves form a æcrushed zoneÆ directly adjacent to the blast hole. The second region, termed the æcracked zoneÆ, occurs outside the crush one. The widely used Kuz-Ram model does not recognise these two blast regions. In the Kuz-Ram model the mean fragment size from the blast is approximated and is then used to estimate the remaining size distribution. Experience has shown that this model predicts the coarse end reasonably accurately, but it can significantly underestimate the amount of fines generated. As part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P483A Mine to MillTM project, the Two-Component Model (TCM) and Crush Zone Model (CZM), developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), were compared and evaluated to measured ROM fragmentation distributions. An important criteria for this comparison was the variation of model results from measured ROM in the fine to intermediate section (1 mm to 100 mm) of the fragmentation curve. This region of the distribution is important for Mine to MillTM optimisation. The comparison of modelled and Split ROM fragmentation distributions has been conducted in harder ores (UCS greater than 80 MPa). Further work involves modelling softer ores. The comparisons will be continued with future site surveys to increase confidence in the comparison of the CZM and TCM to Split results. Stochastic fragmentation modelling will then be conducted to take into account variation of input parameters. A window of possible fragmentation distributions can be compared to those obtained by Split. Following this work, an improved fragmentation model will be developed in response to these findings.

The Henderson Mine has been utilising a continuous panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore since starting operation in 1976. In the past three decades since the mine was designed, many changes have taken place in underground technology as well as the general nature of the mining business. The impacts of larger scale underground equipment and automation are significant at Henderson and continue to reshape the nature of the enterprise. During the first years of operation in the 1970s, Henderson required almost 2000 employees to achieve full production, today only about 400 people are required to fully utilise the plantÆs capacity. The most recent change to the facility is the conversion from a rail haulage system to an underground crushing and conveying system that transports ore 25 km to the Henderson mill site. This change has required the introduction of large, rubber tired haulage trucks underground and the mining methods necessary to develop the large openings demanded by the trucks and underground crusher. The development of the underground crusher is also the first step to mining the final bottom horizon of the orebody. Along with this move comes an opportunity to almost triple the effectiveness of the mining effort, through higher draw columns and wider draw bell spacing. This final advancement to a totally trackless mine has positioned Henderson well for safe and efficient operation as it enters the 21st century.

The pyroclastic-filled Voorspoed kimberlite pipe has a low grade due to significant internal dilution which translates to a marginal business case. The site, with excavations, tailings dumps and buildings remnant of mining from 1906 to 1912 is to become De BeersÆ benchmark mine in South Africa. In a climate of skills shortages and lean structures, a geological service to optimise exploitation of this complex resource was established. As historical mining removed the higher-grade centre of the pipe, initial production was in the weathered upper benches along brecciated pipe margins. Trenching and blasthole logging before blasts helped to mitigate the effects of the drastic contact deviations that occur when working with an inferred geological model. However, identification of unfamiliar weathered kimberlite and delineation of unmodelled internal waste posed challenges. Efficient grade control by demarcation and allocation of individual truck loads will be vital to continue profitable mining at Voorspoed. Further challenges arose across disciplines. The first yearÆs planned production of mostly weathered kimberlite was processed through a plant designed for VoorspoedÆs unusually competent ore. The high clay content of the weathered material led to clogged chutes and overloaded fines disposal, hampering efforts to commission the plant. Resolving this problem involved mining æout of planÆ to provide a blend of fresh and weathered kimberlite. The calculation of an accurate mine call factor was hindered by a lack of haul truck monitoring, process stoppages and stockpiling in the plant during commissioning. Updating of the geological model to incorporate the contact changes observed in the pit was slowed by the need to first understand how 40 years of exploration data was integrated to create the model. A plan, involving focused mine geology practices, is in place to upgrade a portion of the resource from Inferred to Indicated level of confidence. These challenges are not limited to new mines but will be ongoing as new information is constantly gained at Voorspoed and many mining operations.

The southern Attiki peninsula is a very interesting area from an environmental point of view. The port and the city of Lavrio is situated at the east coast of the peninsula with about 10 000 inhabitants and there are also a few villages in the vicinity. The south-eastern part of the peninsula hosts the famous Lavrio mines which exploited the silver bearing orebodies of the area for more than 25 centuries. As a result, soils around the city of Lavrio are polluted with high heavy metal loads. The area is also of archaeological interest, as there are well preserved remnants of ancient mining and processing plants and archaeological sites. Soil samples collected from an area of approximately 120 km2 around Lavrio were analysed for their metal contents and the spatial distribution of the concentrations of ten selected elements were estimated from these data sets. The spatial data analysis and transformation capabilities of Geographic Information Systems, combined with extensive mining and geological data, helped the authors to identify the extent and causes of metal pollution around Lavrio.

An accurate and rapid assessment of coal resources, such as that provided by computer modelling, forms an intergral role in evaluating CSR's coal deposits for future development. An in-house system utilising a number of geological, engineering, costing and financial evaluation routines has been developed for DEC VAX computers. The system is currently being upgraded and enhanced to meet the demands at the various mine sites. Computer modelling of the geology is performed on encoded drillhole information and coal core chemical and physical analyses. A conceptual mine plan is formulated then digitized and superimposed on the geological model. Insitu and product coal reserves and qualities as well as overburden and parting quantities are then calculated for each strip or block. These strip parameters are then transferred to the mine scheduling routines to determine the most efficient mining sequence for the mine plan. Cost factors and scheduling data for equipment specified in the conceptual mine plan are used in the mine costing subsystem. The financial subsystem then evaluates the likely return on investment. Future enhancements to the system include improvements in the response time through the introduction of interactive graphics, the direct interfacing of geophysical and analytical data, and further development of a geotechnical'database.

Multiple data sources can be fused to improve boundary modelling in stratified deposits such as the banded iron formation (BIF) hosted deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Accurate boundaries are essential to produce high quality geological models. Initial models are based on the widely spaced exploration hole data. This creates a high level of uncertainty in areas between the holes, with different interpretations of the boundary equally probable. Including directional information collected in these holes in the models can reduce the number of possibilities. Including data collected during mining, such as blastholes and bench measurements, can further guide the model. This research demonstrates a Gaussian Processes based method of fusing these disparate data sources to better inform the boundaries. Our results demonstrate that when only exploration points are used the model creates a smooth boundary with minimal variation between the holes. Each additional data source refined the model and added additional detail to the boundary. For the blast data, the new detail projects down to the bench below the current bench to allow for a better prediction before mining commences on that bench.

The world is getting flatter through internet, mobile phone technology, relatively low cost travel, massive outsourcing of manufacturing to China and the transfer of company backroom operations to India. In the iron and steel industry, however, things will remain relatively the same with slow gradual improvements in technology; only the geographic location of plants may change over time. Or will it? The blast furnace smelting process has remained largely unchanged since 1828 when James Neilson came up with the idea of preheated air being delivered to the tuyeres. Likewise, oxygen steelmaking that takes molten iron from such blast furnaces has remained conceptually unchanged since Sir Henry Bessemer invented an air-based system in 1856. These two processes are the core of integrated steel mills that we know today. Typically such mills consist of coke ovens, sinter plant, blast furnace, oxygen steelmaking, continuous caster, rolling mills and metal coating lines. In the intervening 150 years the only real disruptive technology to the integrated steel mill has been the minimill. Based on the use of the electric arc furnace (EAF), in conjunction with a continuous caster and rolling mill, the term minimill is used because steel products are produced at down to one-tenth the scale required for economic operation of an integrated mill, with the EAF producing molten steel using largely scrap steel as its feed, as against transforming coal to coke (coke ovens), iron ore, coke and limestone into molten iron (blast furnace) and molten iron to steel (oxygen steelmaking). There are, however, a number of technologies in development that may cause a paradigm shift in the way steel products are produced and perhaps push the evolution of the minimill as a disruptive technology. Two examples are direct iron smelting, where iron is produced in a matter of seconds by injection of ironmaking feed materials into a molten bath, and thin strip casting, where molten steel is cast into 2 mm strip or less, in similar time. Both have Australian connections. A leading iron smelting technology is the HIsmelt« process, which has its first commercial application at Kwinana, Western Australia, where a joint venture of international parties, consisting of Rio Tinto and the Nucor, Mitsubishi and Shougang corporations, are in the stage of ramping up commercial production. The leading strip casting technology is the Castrip« process that arose from development work done by then BHP Steel, with IHI of Japan, at Port Kembla, New South Wales in the 1990s. Nucor followed this work up, building the first commercial plant for the technology at its Crawfordsville site in Indiana in 2001 and has recently announced an intention to build a second plant in the USA. While both technologies are only into the early stages of commercialisation they are likely to change the face of iron and steelmaking as we know it over the next 20 years. This paper elaborates on the technology of the two processes, why they could change the face of the iron and steel industry forever, what might drive the rapid change and what the changes may look like.

The Warraua and Mount Poole Inliers form part of a discontinuous series of basement complexes in the northwestern corner of New South Wales. The Inliers comprise mainly clastic sediments of low metamorphic grade (Wonominta Beds) and minor sills, dykes and intrusives, particularly within the Mount Poole lnJier. The Warratta rnlier has received attention due to the occurrence of auriferous quartz-veins where reef mining activities havetaken place.The deformational history of the Warratta and Mount Poole Inljers is characterised by a continuous subhorizontally WSW-ENE directed compression. Deformation was associated with the development of NNW-trending and steeply west-dipping major faults, which bound or biscct the inliers. Chevron folds and a penetrative axial planar cleavage characterise the deformational architecture and document crustal shorterung of at least 40 per cent. In zones adjacent to the major faults and within pelitic and semi-pelitic uruts, a multiple deformational evolution becomes apparent, comprising two events (D1 and D2). Deformational structures considered significant in this study were the result of D1. Tight, northeast-vergent fold patterns FI' and associated axjal plane cleavage SI' and reverse dip-slip movements at major faults indicate early northeast-directed thrusting during D1. This was followed by dextral strike-slip deformation displayed by tight, recumbent folds, en-echelon fold patterns (F2'), a northeast trending crenulation cleavage (52'), and two sets of second order faults, the latter showing high angular relationship to the major faults. A final stage of the deformational history (D2) is represented by WSW-ENE trending kink folds (F2).Auriferous quartz veins, predominantly occurring within pelitic and semi-pelitic units, were generated syntectorucally during the early deformational event (D1) in the course of commencing development of cleavage (S2'). Vein textures point towards vein formation by repeated hydrauJjc fracturing and fracture healing (crack-seal process), and by simple accretionary vein growth. Folded pelite-dominated horizons, considered as low permeability units, are suggested preferential sites where migrating metamorphic Ouids pooled and were trapped, causing high fluid pressure.Hydraulic fracturing and vein precipitation was controlled by lithology and structural constraints such as cleavage.K-Ar dates of approximately 440 Ma (Benambran Orogeny) marking the peak of metamorphism, and coinciding with the development of cleavage S1', also indicate the time of auriferous quartz-vein formation. A period of deformation of at least 30 Ma is proposed for the development of cleavage S1', as constrained by K-Ar dating and the intrusion of a syntectonic granitoid, the Tibooburra Granodiorite.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

A large hard rock rib pillar was recently preconditioned at Mt Charlotte mine using a novel blasting technique. The motivation for trialling this procedure was a history of past pillar failures, with associated seismicity. Design studies had shown that a new proposed pillar would be at risk of violent failure, and preconditioning was used in an attempt to reduce this risk. Preconditioning by blasting involves physically modifying a selected zone of ground in advance of mining, then forming the pillar so that it incorporates that zone of ground. The modified rock in the zone is intended to allow extra closure (yield) of the pillar in response to mining-induced stress changes. The ground modification was done by tight firing a blasthole array to fracture the rock. The blast design comprised pairs of pre-split blastholes to create a series of short cracks across the target zone, followed by main blastholes to fracture the rockmass between each pair of cracks. A monitoring program was used to establish whether or not the preconditioning was effective. It included conventional extensometers, stress change cells and closure stations, plus a seismic monitoring system. To-date, stoping is complete on one side of the pillar and has just commenced on the other. Results show significant movements within the preconditioned zone and on geological structures in the pillar, as well as lower stress in the pillar compared to an adjacent non-preconditioned site. The preconditioning technique can be applied elsewhere, provided its purpose, mechanism and side effects are understood. Benefits are likely to include more assured production, and successful pillar recovery even in high stress situations.
