Biomineralisation is the process by which microorganisms mediate and catalyse inorganic reactions so as to form new mineral assemblages. The goal of biomineralisation as a remediation tool is to control microbial processes and their environment so as to sequester and immobilise specific toxic metals within exceptionally strong bonds of neo-formed mineral assemblages. In this way, the bound metals are no longer mobile within a geological time-scale. Applied biomineralisation uses microorganisms, which are isolated from a metal waste environment and are selected for their ability to rapidly catalyse neo-mineral development from dissolved or leachable metals. A typical waste environment will contain microbes that contribute to the mobilisation of metal contaminants as well as microbes that possess the potential for remineralising available metals. Selection and augmenting the correct combination of bacteria and eliminating the competing mineral degrading reactions are the key to applying biomineralisation as an in situ remediation process. Applied biomineralisation harnesses the microbesÆ ability to stabilise toxic soluble metals into non-mobile mineralassemblages. This paper will discuss and demonstrate the biomineralisation process through several case studies including the Summitville mine site in Colorado, the McCoy-Cove mine in Nevada, the Argonaut mine in California, and an historic lead site in Crooksville, Ohio.

"Optimisation of drill and blast design and engineering can deliver a significant positive impact on the profitability of any mining operation; however, true engineering of the blasting process is less common than might be thought. The paper that follows explores this gap and suggests a process control-based approach to the challenge.The concept of applying modifications to drill and blast designs in order to achieve efficiency improvements in downstream mining processes is far from new. However, the author suggests that the practical application has become less than rigorous in a number of different sectors of the mining industry in a wide range of countries.There is a common tendency for the design process to become simplified to the point where the objective is merely the communication of instructions to field implementers (drillers, explosive suppliers, blasters, etc). In effect ‘design’ often degrades to ‘cut and paste’ with consequences that vary from mild to critical, with respect to the profitability of the business.Engineering of the drill and blast process involves the design function, not on a one-off basis but rather as a component of a more complete cyclical process that includes a statement of objectives, a design based on a suggested hypothesis, field measurement of results, comparison with the target ‘set point’ and the application of control measures followed by new measurement, including interpretation of the results in financial terms.When applied in this fashion, engineering provides practitioners with the means to optimise the drill and blast impact on the full spectrum business result of the mining activity.These concepts are discussed with reference to a surface gold mining operation applying run-of-mine heap leach extraction. Engineering optimisation by adapting process control and measurement techniques is demonstrated to be a key component of the solution set applied to generate enhanced operations productivity and stakeholder value. It is shown that a combination of rigorous measurement, model calibration and hands-on quality assurance/quality control facilitates the creation of a road map to profitability, stressing the need to consider economic trade-offs between operational expense (investment) and measurement of enhanced value (return on investment).The process, however, does not cease at this point. Implementation of true design practices, incorporating innovation and discipline in implementation or execution can drive the process to deliver demonstrable, technically validated outcomes. Furthermore, these technical results can be related to financially quantifiable impacts. However, this accomplishment does not guarantee that these gains or savings will reach the bottom line of those mining, quarrying and construction companies that begin the process with such high hopes.CITATION:Adamson, W R, 2015. Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs copper/gold operation disposes of approximately 222 000 dry metric tonnes of tailings per day via two thickeners. Reduction of the flocculant dosage rates in each of the tailing thickeners has been achieved with the installation of Clarometers«, modifications to the existing operating DCS control strategy and a change in plant flocculant. This has reduced the flocculant consumption rate in the last twelve months by approximately 20 per cent. It has also highlighted the disparity in the settling rates of the two thickeners. Collaborative efforts between Cytec technical site engineers and Freeport operational personnel have made possible the overall gains achieved in the tailings thickener optimisation.

Computerisation of mine planning activities, specifically in the areas of geology, design and surveying, has been in progress for a number of years in underground metalliferous mines. The combined capabilities of hardware and software have only recently reached the levels necessary to fully support integrated mine planning computer systems in a graphical three dimensional environment. Despite the apparent capabilities of systems now on the market, many sites retain significant parts of their older paper based systems, and employ a mix of two or more software packages. This paper examines what underground metalliferous sites are doing in this area in Australia, and discusses the factors which are inhibiting full implementation of fully integrated computerised systems. Future directions for further developments in the field are also briefly discussed.

Reuse of process water in mineral and coal flotation plants is widespread to effectively reduce freshwater consumption. However, the accumulation of the frother in the recycled process water is a growing problem as high remnant frother concentration often leads to undesirable overfrothing issues throughout the plants. Various approaches have been proposed by others to measure frother concentration, but none of them is used in flotation practice owing to the requirement of timeconsuming sample preparation steps and/or specialist training to operate and maintain. There is a pressing need for the development of a simple and fast frother concentration measuring technique to avoid overfrothing issues and to optimise the flotation process. The present paper presents two promising approaches to measuring frother concentration online. The first approach measures the concentration of alcohol type frothers based on the host-guest interactions between frother molecules and a formulated liquid. This method is simple and fast as it only requires mixing the formulated liquid with the water sample for up to one minute. The potential of this approach was demonstrated by determination of the residual MIBC concentrations at different locations across a coal flotation plant. The second approach measures frother concentration using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process and a cryogen-free benchtop NMR spectrometer. Using this approach, both alcohol type and polyglycol type frother solutions can be analysed for concentration determination within 30 minutes. It has also been demonstrated that the concentration of individual frothers in a frother blend (ie MIBC and PPG425 in water) can be accurately analysed even in the presence of background chemicals. This technique has otential for real-time measurement of frother concentration as the whole process can be fully automated.

The Hodgkinson goldfield contains over 50 separate lodes which have produced 9.7 tonnes of gold from ore averaging 37 g/t. The gold-quartz.lodes are spatially separate from tin and base metal mineralisation, associated with Permo-Carboniferous granitoids in the province. Host rocks consist of sub-greenschist metamorphic grade shale, conglomerate, sandstone, spilite, chert and melange. Oreshoots average 100 x 30 x I m in Size and are contained in cross-cutting quartz. filled with steep-dipping shear zones. Mineralisation in the quartz. consists of gold with minor arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite with rare calcite. Scheelite and stibnite are aSSOCIated locally but are not necessary proximal or coeval. Alteration is restricted to centimetre-scale phyllic selvedges adjacent to the veins and veinlets.Most of the lodes and vems occur within six main 1.5 x 0.25 km mineralised areas whIch may indIcate separate areas of fluid flow and precipitation. Ore controls differ m melange- and sandstone-hosted lodes but several features are common to all the oreshOOlS. Most of the lodes occur within zones of duauon that are caused by splaymg, refraction through carbonaceous shale-sandstone contacts, or by rolls and changes in strike and dip.Lithologic contacts may act as areas of permeability and chemistry contrast which focus fluid and precipitation. Tensional veins are common between parallel shear zones and curved spur veins occur both in the hangingwall and footwall of the main fissure. Intersections and contacts may have enhanced local fluid flow in many of the areas.

In July 2006, ten Mining Engineering students and Associate Professor David Laurence from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) participated in the universityÆs inaugural overseas mining field trip. The ten-day trip to western Canada involved visits to two mines in British Columbia, the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories and the Syncrude oil sands operation in Alberta. Importantly, the groupÆs main objective was to gain a global understanding of todayÆs mining industry by observing the different cultural, legal, social and environmental setting found in Canada. It should be noted that the entire trip was planned, organised and directed by the students and benefited from extensive industry support both in Australia and Canada. This report intends to provide an overview of the field trip and describe to a limited extent the Canadian approach to mining.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

Mining companies have recognised that characterisation of particle breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimisation of comminution circuits. Recently the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterisation testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions. The latter is believed to be the dominant breakage mechanism in AG/SAG mills. Existing devices, such as the JKMRC Drop Weight Tester, are not suitable for performing repetitive impacts since they are too time consuming. Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalised experimental test program on professionally designed and manufactured JKRBT machines. The first JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the project in 2008, with commercial release expected in early 2009. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionise ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterisation of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control of comminution circuits since it is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement. Can any mine afford to miss out on this technology?

This paper discusses the potential role of underground space and tunnelling in urban planning in Australia. The paper gives examples of the infrastructure and commercial applications of underground space which have been effectively used overseas but have been slow to be considered as a part of urban planning in Australia. In particular, the paper looks at underground quarrying and underground commercial development and their potential use in the urban environment. Existing sites and potential sites for quarrying and/or commercial use have been classified using a system developed by the author. Underground quarrying may provide some solutions for planning problems involving sand and aggregate supplies, waste disposal and other uses. Commercial development involving underground excavation may be accepted if the cost of underground commercial development can be shown to be equivalent to the cost of above ground development. The paper concludes that one role of the underground construction industry is to promote tunnelling and underground space amongst architects, town planners and planning decision-makers. The Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association (AUCTA) and the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) should be instrumental in actively promoting the use of underground space in society.

Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

Predicting the physical characteristics of various ore types has for long been a difficult problem during mining. Grade control practices tend to concentrate on the chemical grade of the ore. Estimation of physical characteristics such as beneficiation behaviour is commonly limited to the simplistic application of historical averages. Large amounts of geochemical data are often gathered during the exploration and mining stages of a project, especially in ferrous and base metal deposits. In addition to the elements of principal economic interest, samples are often analysed for suites of gangue constituents to determine whether the mineralisation lies within target specifications. This multi-element data is often put to no other use than this simple chemical classification, yet it may present the geologist or metallurgist with valuable insights into the mineral content and physical characteristics of the deposit. Normative mineral estimates have been used as a method for characterising igneous rocks for almost 100 years. The method establishes and applies a set of sequential rules, by which the chemical components of a sample are assigned to mineral components. Provided that it is possible to make some realistic assumptions about the mineral species likely to be present in a rock unit or deposit and their paragenesis, this approach can be extended to a variety of mineral deposits. The geochemical data that are routinely collected when, for example, drilling iron ore and base metal deposits, can be used to derive estimates of normative mineral content. These estimates can be used to characterise physical or metallurgical aspects of the ore, such as density, beneficiation behaviour and metal recovery. This paper examines the application of normative mineral estimates to a variety of practical resource characterisation problems. The potential for predicting the lump and fines proportions of iron and manganese ores is also discussed.

The conventional approach to the disposal of fine coal mine tailings, which involves piping the tailings as an aqueous slurry to a storage where they remain in the form of a permanent wet deposit, is becoming unacceptable. This approach is a legacy of a "contain and forget" mentality, which has economic advantages only in the short term. In the longer term, wet tailings deposits occupy large areas of land and present extreme rehabilitation difficulties. Alternative tailings disposal systems, which are sustainable and which facilitate rehabilitation, are required. The possible alternatives include the mechanical dewatering of fine tailings prior to disposal in combination with coarse reject, tailings disposal into spoil pile valleys, and the combined pumping to disposal of tailings and coarse reject. The most appropriate choice of fine tailings disposal strategy will vary from mine site to mine site. The chosen strategy should be optimised to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements, within the constraints imposed by each mine. The alternative approaches represent significant departures from past practices, and require considerable industry driven research and development before they can be adopted with confidence. All three alternatives involve mixing of the fine tailings and coarse waste streams, aimed at creating a mixture of reasonable engineering properties. Understanding the engineering behaviour of such mixtures is central to the success of these alternative disposal strategies.

This is a brief introduction of a sewer pipeline constructed with a pipe jacking method in combination with a 1 200 mm finished inner diameter tunnel boring machine developed for the first time in Japan. The pipeline is located under a national highway running through a densely built urban area and is 185.7 m long and 2.9 m to 3.7 m deep from the ground surface. The geological features along the pipeline show mostly slate and partly silt. The pipeline was constructed with a newly developed multi-application type tunnel boring machine equiped with a fluid transport system. The construction consisted of tunneling by a tunnel boring machine followed by pipe jacking operations. The excavated materials were dis- charged off the tunnel by a fluid transport System.

There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. Very little public domain information is available on the exploration signature of the Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt deposit. From 1987 to 1990 the BMR (now AGSO) carried out geological, geophysical and geochemical (whole-rock, stream, soil and rock chip) surveys within the South Alligator and Kakadu Conservation Zones and defined several key parameters useful for exploration programs. The essential geological ingredients for the style of Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt¦U deposit are oxidised, low pH fluids, dilatant fault structures, a thick neutral to oxidised cover sequence and chemical traps in the basement. In geophysical data, the areas surrounding the mineralisation can be detected by airborne magnetics as major lows in magnetite-rich rocks, whereas in airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data, imaged spectrometric channel ratios such as U2/I'h and U2/K highlighted alteration surrounding the deposits. Three types of stream-sediment and soil samples were taken from each site: (1) -1 mm mesh, 5 kg sample for bulk cyanide leach (BCL) analysis for Au, Pd, and Pt; (2) 1 kg sample of -1 mm mesh sediment for fire assay/ICPMS analysis for Au, Pt and Pd; and (3) 50 g - 180¦ mesh sample for a variety of trace element analyses, including Au, Pd and Pt. Techniques 2 and 3 gave similar results for Au, Pt and Pd, while the recovery rates for Pd and Pt from the BCL samples were considerably lower. Other trace elements did not define unique indicators for Pt or Pd mineralisation, as each sample reflected the dominant lithology in the drainage basin. Rock chip surveys were useful in determining which faults were associated with the ore fluid in regions of multiple fracturing. Results from these exploration-style surveys also confirmed that the Coronation Hill deposit is a variant of the unconformity-style of mineralisation, as all significant geochemical and/or geophysical results occur at or below the unconformity.

At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

Oceana Gold CorporationÆs (OGC) Frasers underground (FRUG) transitioned into production in early 2008. The mine uses a relatively unique yielding pillars mining method that takes its lessons from empirical coal mining practices more so than hard rock techniques. Being a low-grade, flat-dipping resource hosted in the highly structured relatively weak Otago schist in central South Island in New Zealand, meant a number of iterations were undertaken to find the right mix of mining cost and resource extraction. Mining is on the down dip extension of the active Frasers open pit at the Macraes site (that extracts the full shear zone package at a head grade of 1.5 g/t). The challenges for the FRUG feasibility study team was to deliver an net present value (NPV) positive operation that would exist as a coproduct with OGCÆs other New Zealand operations, allowing it to make use of the high throughput low cost refractory ore treatment facility.Key factors in the successful project design were: Net capital costs kept to less than NZ$30 M by realising significant gold revenues from mine development from month four onwards. Virtually eliminating waste development by putting all key capital infrastructure in the low-grade ore adjacent to panels and maintaining the option of extracting this resource on retreat from the mine. Targeting a specific higher grade halo ore package within the entire mineralised shear zone. Applying a mining method that accepted a higher degree of dilution, ore loss and resource loss (in yielding and non-yielding pillars) to the flat-dipping resource. Thus providing an acceptable margin per tonne and resource tonnes mix, as the resource could not support a conventional low-cost caving operation, nor a higher cost room and pillar or open stope and backfill operation. 2008 has seen increasing tonnes and grade performance with a corresponding decrease in cost per tonne and cost per ounce as the mine has reached nominal capacity and is producing an operating surplus. The challenge will be to maintain and improve.
