Flotation frothers are heteropolar molecules that are preferentially adsorbed at the bubble interface to enhance the flotation performance by promoting the formation of small and stable bubbles. Frothers have different characteristics that can be used to classify them. A classification framework has been recently presented by Saavedra Moreno et al (2022) to classify non-ionic frothers by conducting a principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). However, for the purpose of the present research, only five frother characteristics, including molecular weight (MW), hydrophile–lipophile balance (HLB), critical coalescence concentration (CCC), the minimum Sauter mean diameter (DL), and foam stability index (DFI) were used in the PCA and HCA. All those characteristics were evaluated for a two-phase system in the absence of particles. Realising the important role that particles play in froth stability and behaviour, the effect of hydrophobic particles on the presented frother classification framework was investigated in this study. Four frothers with different characteristics, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 1-pentanol, tri (propylene glycol) (TPG), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether (TPM), were chosen. The experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of silica particles esterified with 1-pentanol. It was evident that the results for 1-pentanol, TPM, MIBC, and TPG in the three-phase system agreed well with the frother classification presented for the two-phase system as frothers were clustered in the same groups. The findings from this research support the use of the frother classification system presented in two-phase system to select a specific frother for a particular application without the necessity of conducting laborious experiments in a three-phase system.

All commercially available zircon sands contain radioactivity sourcing from the decay of trace amounts of contained uranium (U) and thorium (Th). The fine particle size zircons of the Horsham area in the Murray Basin region of Victoria, Australia, contain significantly more (about twice) Th+U than those commercial zircon sands. The marketability of these fine-grained zircon sands is likely to rely on the removal of these radioactive impurities. CSIRO Minerals have been working for some time to develop processes for the removal of the radioactive impurities from zircon. It is generally agreed that it is quite impossible to leach U and Th from zircon, however, the Heat and Leach (HL) process, described in detail in Aral and McDonald (1999), reduces the radionuclide levels significantly. The identified (HL) process aims to leach uranium and thorium selectively from a decomposed zircon. The novelty of the process is that a large part of the leached product can be reconstituted to a low radiation zircon by a subsequent heat treatment. The HL process uses a flux mixture of sodium carbonate and calcium borate to decompose the zircon at relatively low temperatures (900 to 1150¦C) and a weak acid (0.5M HNO3; 80¦C/0.5 h; pulp density ten per cent) to leach the radionuclides selectively. The process leaves the major components (ZrO2 and SiO2) behind with little loss. The HL process for example lowers the U+Th content of a Murray Basin zircon from 1000 ppm to 400 ppm U+Th. Among the radionuclides more U progeny is removed than the Th series radionuclides. This is very significant as the radioactivity of U series is 2.5 times more that from the Th series. Therefore the reduction in the radioactivity level of zircon is more than the reduction in Th+U indicated by XRF analysis. A schematic flow sheet of the HL process is shown in Figure 1. Although the HL process successfully lowers the radionuclide levels in zircon sands, the final product contains significant amounts of sodium (up to 14 per cent Na2O) and small amounts of CaO. By comparison, the sodium content of the commercial zircon sands is in general 2O. Zircon is used mainly as an opacifier in tile glazing where the addition of ten to 15 per cent zircon to a translucent base glaze gives the sanitary white colour to the tile surface. Opacification is the result of the refractoriness of zircon particles at the glaze firing temperatures that is generally around 1050¦C.

Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate. To date, few studies have been made regarding the energy requirements of the Australian mining and mineral processing industries. This paper indicates that these industries use a substantial proportion of the total Australian energy input (32.7% in 1971-72 and 36.10% in 1974-75). With the growth orientation of these industries, this input is likely to increase. Data shows that mining energy requirementE varied from 4.22% (of total Australian energy requirements) in 1971-72 to 4.16% in 1974-75. Energy requirements for the total mineral processing industries increased from 28.49% to 31.93% for the same period. The total estimated primary energy input varied from 22.56% to 25.2%, whilst indirect energy use, in the form of electricity increased from 10.16% to 10.66%; in the same period. Analysis of primary energy input data within the processing industries (1973/4) showed that the Iron and Steel Industry consumed 15.03% of the Australian total consumption, Non-Ferrous metals, 5.43%, Cement, 1.64%, and Refractories, 1.59%. A new ecologically promising technology for the copper-nickel ore benefication using insert gases and pyrrhotite depression is under consideration. The finely dispersed nickel-containing sulphides and the pyrrhotite are easily oxidised during the process of flotation resulting in deterioration of selectivity and valuable component loss in the tailings. One of the ways to improve the benefication is the flotation of easily-oxidising minerals in an inert atmosphere. In the experiments nitrogen was taken as the inert gas supposing that in the industrial scale operations nitrogen generating, as a by-product of the oxigen production. will be used (Rybas et at, 1989). The most wide-spread mineral in the Norilsk rich sulphide copper-nickel ores is pyrrhotite containing iron, sulphur, nickel and platinum group metals. Up to 30 per cent of the pyrrhotite sulphur is recovered into the nickel concentrate causing the high sulphur dioxide emission in the further pyrometallurgical process of nickel production. This is the reason why the problem of the pyrrhotite removal during the ore concentration should be solved, the critical factor of the problem being the lowest possible nickel content in the pyrrhotite. According to the data of the geological and mineralogical mapping the nickel content in the pyrrhotites of rich ores varies from 0.3 to 1.8 per cent, with the mean value equal to 0.6 - 0.8 per cent. This assures the technological and economical effectiveness of the low-grade pyrrhotite removal during the flotation process.

The presence of platinum metals in the nickeliferous copper ore of the Thomson River Copper Mine near Walhalla, Victoria, was first revealed in 1905 by assays made in the laboratory of the Department of Mines (1).These disclosed the presence in the ore of 5 dwt. platinum metals, 1 dwt. gold and 13 dwt. silver per ton. Attempts to isolate the platinum-bearing mineral were unsuccessful, and the absence of obvious native platinum led the assayer, Mr. P. G. W. Bayley, to suspect that the platinum might be present as sperrylite. Subsequently, Mr. C. M. Lyons, then metallurgist to the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company, Walhalla, tried to isolate the platinum mineral from samples of ore containing as much as 7 dwt. platinum metals, but again without success.In 1912, a sample of copper matte from this ore was submitted to Messrs. Johnson, Matthey and Company, Limited of London, for analysis. The analysis, which is quoted below by their courtesy, revealed tnat a large proportion of the metal pi'eviously reported as platinum was palladium, there being about two parts of palladium in the matte to one part of platinum.

Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

An automatic control system of a longwall roof support is dis-cussed. Hydraulic automatic control systems for longwall roof support have not met all requirements for such systems. Utilization of standard hydraulic elements to form a system that would-comply with all demands leads to a very complicated structure with a large number of hydraulic hoses within and between adjacent supports. So, only simplified systems have been made. This paper describes the multifunctional valve that per-mits realization of any desired logic functions, while maintaining a com-pact form, and analyses its application as a fully hydraulic automatic control system of a roof support.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. A considerable volume of work exists in the literature examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide minerals. Broadly, most sulfide minerals are more noble than forged steel grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulfide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulfide minerals thereby affecting their floatability. This paper explores the science behind these corrosion reactions, and provides an explanation of their impact on the pulp chemistry of sulfide mineral slurries and subsequent flotation behaviour. A number of laboratory and plant case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of changing to a more inert grinding media.

Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) is a promising material for thermal applications due to its excellent heat and oxidation resistance. It can operate at temperatures of up to 1800°C as furnace heating elements and protect refractory metals such as molybdenum from rapidly reacting with air to form volatile molybdenum oxides at elevated temperature. In this work, the feasibility of forming MoSi2 on a molybdenum substrate by hot dipping in a silicon-saturated molten metal bath was investigated. This method is simple, predictable and can be used to coat large components and complex parts. It was found that tetragonal MoSi2 can be successfully synthesised on the surface of the substrate after dipping for 15 mins at 1000°C using molten tin (Sn), bismuth (Bi) and copper (Cu) baths. The growth of the MoSi2 layer was fast within the first 15 mins and then gradually slowed down with time. After dipping for 60 mins at 1000°C, the thickness of the MoSi2 layer were measured as 441.5, 19.5 and 13.1 μm for the copper, tin, and bismuth baths, respectively. The MoSi2 coating synthesised in this study provided oxidation resistance at 1150°C by forming a protective SiO2 layer on the surface. The SiO2 layer prevented the sample from rapidly oxidising by inhibiting direct contact between the molybdenum substrate and oxygen in the atmosphere. Compared to conventional methods, the proposed hot dipping method produces a MoSi2 layer more rapidly and at much lower operating temperatures. This makes it a more attractive option for coating large and complex components, with the potential to enable the use of MoSi2 in a wider range of applications.

Glass-reinforced polymer bolts, commonly known as fibreglass dowels and fibre-reinforced polymer or plastic bolts or plastic dowels are increasingly applied for strata reinforcement in mines as well as in concrete reinforcement in civil engineering. The most popular dowels used in coalmines are the 22?mm diameter fully threaded type. Fibreglass and plastic bolts are cuttable, easy to handle, lightweight and corrosive resistant. A series of tests were undertaken to evaluate various strength properties of fibreglass dowels. These included tensile failure tests by the double-embedment method, a single guillotine shear test and a double shear test, carried out on dowels installed in concrete blocks, and with punch shear tests. Punch shear tests were used to evaluate the dowel shear strength parallel and perpendicular to the fibreglass strands or elements direction of extrusion. The study found that the tensile strength of the 22?mm diameter fibreglass dowels was in the order of 30?t. In the shear testing, the peak shear load was influenced by the encapsulation grout type and the level of fibreglass axial pretension. Australian steelmakers produce up to 30 000 t/yr of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. Current disposal techniques include sending EAF dust to landfill, stockpiling, and paying zinc smelters or registered waste removalists/processors to take the dust. Many of the complex overseas pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes cited in the literature are not considered economic. Governmental, environmental and social pressures on producers to consider more sustainable disposal options are mounting, and there is now a strong push to consider recovering potentially valuable or recyclable components, such as zinc and iron units, from EAF dust. As well, there remain strong economic drivers for producers to find lower cost disposal solutions. Characterisation studies undertaken at CSIRO Minerals have revealed important physical differences in the nature of the zinc- and iron-bearing phases contained in domestic EAF dusts. These differences have been exploited using simple and cheap mineral processing techniques such as water washing, wet cycloning and wet magnetic separation. This has allowed a significant upgrade in the zinc content of EAF dust to be achieved, together with a reduction in the levels of key smelter penalty elements, such as chlorides and fluorides. The zinc-rich portion of the dust is now a more attractive smelter feed while the iron-rich part of the dust could potentially be briquetted or pelletised with a reductant and recycled to recover iron, and thus close the loop on dust processing. The basis of the separations tested together with laboratory results from several Australian dust samples are presented and discussed in this paper.

The weathering profile, in arid terrains, is commonly capped by different kinds of hardened crust, whose formation is related to recent or former climates. One may distinguish silcretes, calcretes and the ferruginous (or ferro-aluminous) laterites. the present keynote address mostly deals with the lateritic regolith and, moreover, the influence it has on mineral exploration. The lateritic regolith, also called "cuirasse", is a result of a massive accumulation of Fe (and/or Al) oxides on top of weathering profiles developed during former, probably seasonal humid, climatic episodes, and whose preservation depends on the characteristics of later climates. The total thickness of such weathering profiles commonly exceeds 50 m, with an almost complete substitution of the rock forming minerals by secondary minerals as kaolinite and Fe-Al oxi- hydroxides (hematite, goethite, boehmite, gibbsite). Such an alteration of the primary minerals assemblage is of course accompanied by significant changes of the chemical composition, as concerns major and trace elements. The latter are distributed amongst the main secondary mineral phases or trapped in some primary resistant minerals, but may also be leached, totally or partially. Gold is also affected by lateritic weathering, as shown for instance by morphoscopic and geochemical studies of gold grains collected in the different horizons of the profile, which indicates some dissolution followed by reprecipitation.
