Recovery of Tantalum Capacitors from Waste Printed Circuit Boards Using a Pneumatic Separator

Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.

The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016. When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

In January 1994, Macraes Mining Company started a new phase of exploration to find additional resources along strike and down dip of identified resources for a mill that was being expanded from 2.1 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. At 30th June 1997 a total of 456,784 m in 3,627 holes had been drilled at the Macraes Gold Project with approximately 325,000 m in 2,100 holes drilled in the latest phase of exploration. This necessitated the construction of resource estimates on a more frequent basis and resulted in the formation of a resource modelling team, assisted by Snowden of Perth. Since April 1995, 14 separate resource estimates have been completed. At Macraes, resource estimates are built using Medsystem/Minesight software. The geological interpretation is converted into a set of three dimensional wireframed solid models which are used to code drillhole composites and blocks in a block model. The interpolation method of indicator kriging is used to interpolate grade into the blocks. Classification into measured, indicated and inferred categories is on the basis of geological confidence and drill spacing. The resource estimate is reconciled against grade control polygonal estimates on a bench by bench basis and on a monthly basis. Grade control estimates are reconciled monthly to mill production. For the period 30 June 1995 to 30 June 1997, the resource estimates have under predicted tonnes by 4% and grade by 1% to under predict ounces by 5% at a 0.5g/t cut off. At ROM sulphide cutoff grade, the models have over predicted tonnes by 5%, under predicted grade by 5% to over predict ounces by 1%.

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. Exploration work at the southern flank of the Mt. Coffin diapir has encountered three different types of copper ores: copper carbonate, largely malachite; secondary sulphides, mainly chalcocite replacing pyrite; and a primary arsenopyrite-tennantite-tetrahedrite-chalcopyrite association. The secondary copper ore is occasionally stratiform but mainly erratic at the contact between tillites and siltstones of the Tapley Hill formation.There have been two stages of primary mineralization.1. Arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite occur in siderite veins.2. Revival of the diapirism has caused fracturing and local brecciation of the rimrock and subsequently ascending solutions precipitated chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite also partly replaced arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite.

The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. A Sun SPARCstation based computer network is utilised to store and process mining data at the Macraes Gold Mine. Techbase and Medsystem software running on the SunOS unix platform is used to generate all data plans, sections and other design data required on a daily basis to run the mining operation. The Macraes site is regarded as a fully integrated site where all geological, grade control, exploration, orebody modelling, resource estimation, pit optimisation and mine design is undertaken on site by MacraesÆ professional staff. The methodologies employed are regarded as æstate-of-the-artÆ where computerisation allows the rapid and efficient evaluation of large quantities of mining data by a handful of professional personnel. Ore reserves are estimated using an indicator kriging method and roving cone pit optimisation, a complex process that would not have been achievable in pre-computing days.

Fluor, together with our clients, has yielded significant reductions in the total cost of mining projects by employing a systematic and methodical process of cost reduction. This paper outlines this structured approach to reducing the total cost of projects through the gathering of information, the evaluation of the zero base design, and the development of the execution strategy for the project in the study phase.Over the recent iron ore boom the cost of growth projects escalated rapidly due to a variety of factors including the engineering cost of re-designing facilities, construction in remote areas and an increase in the ‘perceived’ capital requirements for maintainable and operable facilities.Fluor has made strategic steps towards safely reducing the capital intensity of projects, by working with clients to develop zero base designs which utilise the minimum technical requirements in order to meet the function of the plant and then add cost for safety, maintenance and operability only where clearly justified.This paper has set forth a structured three phased approach to focus the team on reducing capital cost while maintaining a low increase in engineering effort.The initial ‘gather’ phase focuses the team on acquiring information and identifying decisions that will need to be made so that the team can prioritise and focus the attention on areas that will provide the greatest benefit. Within this phase the identification of zero base design requirements, review of lessons learnt and analysis of capital cost levers, allows the team to identify the key decisions on the project that will affect the capital cost.In the subsequent ‘evaluation’ phase the team established the zero base design, using the hierarchy of cost reduction as a guide to focusing the team’s attention on high yielding cost saving opportunities.In the final phase the team develops the execution strategy which will yield the least cost using strategies and tools such as modularisation, standardisation, replication, strategic sourcing and 3D design.CITATION:Merrells, J, 2017.
