Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

The integration was accomplished in three stages commencing in May 1980 and attain- ing current throughput in December 1982. The problems encountered and their solution, including the design and construction of a new tailings dam are also discussed.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. The hydraulic backfilling of mine tailings has proven very successful at the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. It allows greater versatility, selectivity and safety in mining. It has also minimized surface subsidence and underground rock movement. The tight filling also eliminates underground fires. This paper explains the hydraulic backfill method used and the problems encountered by so doing.

COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. The scarcity of truck tyres combined with decreases in the availability of labour, increases in fuel costs and a buoyant international economy driving project budget blowouts, have all combined to change the paradigm behind mining equipment selections. The escalation of commodity prices has occurred in parallel with an increasing maturity in continuous mining machinery, mobile in-pit crushing systems and very large-scale conveyor belt systems. This paper will consider the merits of operating continuous materials handling systems, mobile in-pit crushing systems, relocatable crushing systems, relocatable conveyor systems and automated waste handling systems in place of the more conventional approach of truck haulage.

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. The coal left in the goaf is easily submerged by groundwater damage. During the mining process of the underlying coal seam, it is necessary to drain the water in the overlying goaf. The coal sample is prone to spontaneous combustion after being soaked in water and air-dried. To explore the effect of micro-functional group transformation of water-immersed coal samples on the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples during the low-temperature oxidation process. Using the experimental method of infrared spectroscopy, the migration law of special functional groups under different oxygen concentrations of water-soaked coal samples was analysed. By means of thermal analysis, the endothermic and exothermic properties of the functional groups in the water-soaked coal samples were studied. The results show that: the higher the oxygen concentration, the more oxygen-containing functional groups in the water-soaked coal sample, compared with the 18 per cent oxygen concentration, the 14 per cent oxygen concentration has a small increase, and the chain length is shortened. The temperature increase together with the oxygen concentration content determines the functional group content, the pyrolysis process produces some functional groups. The lower the oxygen concentration, endothermic rate decreases and endothermic temperature increases, the higher the ignition temperature of coal oxy-combustion, the lower the total heat release, the higher the burnout temperature, and the faster the oxygen-absorbing weight gain and the conversion of functional groups. Below 14 per cent oxygen concentration, the oxidative combustion process will be greatly reduced. The results provide a theoretical basis for preventing long-term water-soaked coal body oxidative spontaneous combustion in shallow buried coal seams.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.
