In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

Study on Reasonable Mineral Processing Flow Sheet of Yunfu Low-Grade Pyrite Ores Low-grade ores in Yunfu Pyrite Mining Area were investigated, in order to find an economical, reasonable and environment-friendly mineral processing technology, which is of low consumption and high efficiency in pyrite recovering, which can ensure that the quality of pyrite concentrate product is eligible for sale and the sulfur content of the discharged tailings meets the national emission standards. A flow sheet with a classification, a jigging for coarse-grain minerals and a spiral chute separation for fine-grained minerals was adopted, and the sulfur grade and recovery of the pyrite concentrate is 35.50 per cent and 86.70 per cent respectively, while the grade of tailings is only 6.70 per cent.

The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

The ERMS Process was developed during four years of testwork by Austpac Gold NL to overcome the severe metallurgical problems of the ilmenite atWestport, in the South Island. These deposits have been known for about one hundred years. They were originally mined for gold, and only later attracted attention as a possible source of titanium minerals.   The resource is of world scale and may exceed 20 million tonnes of contained ilmenite. Similar deposits occur at Barrytown further south and together these areas would constitute an important opportunity for export-oriented mineral development, if a viable beneficiation technology were available. Further processing is essential, as the composition of the ilmenite is well below market specifications.

In April 2000 Mount Isa Mines installed hoist ropes of a new design on the double-drum winder at their P49 shaft. The ropes, CASAR Duroplast, were about three times as expensive as the previously used triangular strand ropes. The P49 shaft is situated at Mount Isa MinesÆ George Fisher Mine, located some 30 km north of Mt Isa. This shaft used the tried and proven 6 x 33 triangular strand style ropes. The rope life attained by these ropes at the time was acceptable due to many years of satisfactory performance. The following study indicates the improvement of service life using CASAR Duroplast rope in P 49 shaft, which depends on shaft and winder parameters of that particular shaft and cannot necessarily be generalised to other shafts.

L&M have been involved on the Shotover since 1980 when we joined Jack and Barney Ryan, who had started in 1972 with gold at $45 per ounce after a successful career as roading and demolition contractors in Christchurch. The first 85 tonne plant was a typical NZ trammel-riffle table plant with an armour plated hull for surviving Shotover floods, and was fed by a 53 tonne UH20 excavator. All this gear had to be carted in over the Skippers road on a small truck or sledge for the heavy loads. This operation was successful and generated the cash flow to sample the lower section of river and plan a second plant. To reduce fine gold losses this was planned to be a jig recovery plant and also included a vibrating screen which saved space and weight over a trammel. There are five flowlines of primary jigs and one secondary, followed by two Knudsen bowls for cleanup.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

The influence of feed size and pulp density on the specific rate ofbreakage of quartz was investigated. Plots of log fraction of feedremaining within the feed size interval against grinding time allowed the application of the first order grinding model to be examined. Substantial non-linearities were observed for all feed sizes due to environmental and material factors. For feed sizes above 1.3 mm, the specific rate of quartz breakage was higher with rod milling than ball milling, but below this size the reverse was true. Material that remained in the feed size interval after the initial grinding broke more slowly in subsequent grinding than the original feed material. Grinding media and time as well as feed size influenced the effects of pulp density on grinding. More dilute pulps (eg 50 per cent solids density by weight) were favoured for higher rates of breakage in rod milling but for ball milling, the optimum pulp density appeared to be 60 to 70 per cent solids by weight.

Since the mid-1990s, the Chino Mine Facility (Chino) located near Silver City, New Mexico has been developing a closure plan with financial assurance to protect water quality, as required by State regulations. In February 2002, Chino and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) reached agreement on a closure plan; a closure cost amount of approximately $US 394 million ($A 591 million) was finalised in April 2003. Both the New Mexico Water Quality Act Regulations (1977) and the New Mexico Mining Act Regulations (1993) guided development of the closure plan and financial assurance amount. The process incorporated many years of correspondence, studies, negotiations and administrative hearings. The major technical issues focused on regrading slopes of the leach ore stockpiles and waste rock piles; cover systems; water treatment systems; and abatement of ground water contamination. The proposed financial assurance amount covers all closure costs and provides for perpetual water treatment.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. Red Dome Mine was a highly complex gold copper operation developed over a number of phases between mid-1986 to October 1997. With only three years of production ahead at any time, a proactive practical approach to mine closure was necessary. In 1989 the Domains Concept to life-of-mine planning and mine closure was created as a response to the proposed changes to legislation.The Domains Concept, a relatively simple idea developed to integrate mine closure during production at Red Dome, has been broadly adopted by both government agencies and industry in the intervening 20 year period. Over time the author has observed that the concept has been poorly applied, misunderstood and in some cases even misrepresented. As a consequence, the potential opportunities from applying the concept, including the optimisation and minimisation of life-of-mine costs, mitigation of long-term financial liability exposures and building credibility with the general community, have been missed.This paper examines the many benefits, advantages, applications and perceived barriers to developing and integrating a fully costed life-of-mine plan. Integrating the Domains Concept early in the project, within the operational budgeting, allows the production of a meaningful and useful document, representative of a whole life-of-mine, cradle to grave, with measurable rehabilitation and closure outcomes when the concept is used to full effect.The Domains Concept serves to optimise cost-effective, whole of mine, life cycle planning which provides beneficial outcomes for the community, significantly mitigates legacy issues and contributes to the attainment of compliance and sustainability principle objectives.CITATION:McCarthy, B E, 2014. The orogenic gold deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Orogenic gold deposits are typically quartz vein deposits formed in fault and shear systems at crustal levels within and above the brittle ductile transition zone, at depths of 3 12 km and temperatures from 200¦ to 400¦C. In New Zealand, orogenic gold deposits are found in regionally metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. The deposits in Paleozoic rocks include those at Golden Blocks in Northwest Nelson, Lyell and Reefton on the West Coast, and Preservation Inlet in Fiordland. Quartz veins are developed along shear zones that dip steeply and generally strike parallel to the axes of folding in the greywacke and argillite/slate host rocks, although most are discordant to bedding. The lodes are typically less than 1 m wide and extend an average 200 m horizontally and vertically, but the Birthday Reef at Blackwater, Reefton, the largest quartz vein deposit in Paleozoic rocks, averages 60 cm in width and was mined over a strike length of 1070 m, and to a depth of 830 m. Disseminated gold occurs adjacent to the quartz lodes at Globe-Progress and some other Reefton deposits. The deposits in Mesozoic rocks are hosted in schist of Otago and Marlborough, and schist and greywacke of the Southern Alps. The lodes are typically lensoidal, less than 1 m wide and localised along single or multiple parallel shear zones that generally dip steeply, and are discordant to the schist foliation and bedding. A notable exception is Macraes, where the lodes are developed in the semi-concordant, low angle Hyde Macraes Shear Zone that has a strike length greater than 25 km.

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests and fellow members of The AusIMM, good morning.   Thank you for the opportunity to address you all today, Crown Minerals are very pleased to be associated with the conference again this year, and I commend the committee on their organisation and delivery of this yearÆs event.   As you can see from the topic of my discussion, I would like to broach the subject of collaboration between ourselves û Crown Minerals û and you our clients, and convince you that we are on the right track but can each do more.
