RECENT investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebert1,? Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses.

The North American Coal Corp. Increasing demand for coal, stimulated by the national energy shortage, and complicating and often conflicting, demands by government and ecology groups for better land reclamation methods continued to propel advances in surface mining technology during 1974. To meet current demands for coal (estimated at more than 700 million t for 1975 and 1.5 billion t in 19851, equipment manufacturers and coal operators concentrated on increasing the productivity of all surface mining equipment. The trend towards larger equipment, particularly in overburden removal, loading, and haulage machinery, prevailed during the year, notwithstanding the perennial debate over the economics and practicality of using large, inflexible equipment. Increasingly, the industry called on computers to monitor productivity and help design more efficient production systems

THIS paper is a brief discussion of the past and present methods employed by the Huntington Works of The International Nickel Co., Inc., in the production of nickel and high nickel alloy seamless tubing. The various operations for both hot and cold processing will be considered in their natural sequence, together with the processing characteristics of the high nickel alloys and some descriptions of the equipment used. The tools and lubricants currently in use will be described. This discussion will relate primarily to nickel, Monel,† and Inconel,† since these are the most common of the many alloys processed into tubing at the Huntington Works. The nominal compositions of the materials are shown in Table I. CONVERSION FROM SOLID BILLETS TO TUBE SHELLS History The commercial production of seamless nickel and high nickel alloy tube shells is a comparatively recent development, the first nickel shells having been produced in 1922, Monel in 1930, and Inconel in 1931 on rotary-type piercing mills. Rolled or forged billets, ranging from 3 ½ - to 7 ½ in. diam, were pierced to produce shells ranging' in size from 4 3/8 in. OD X 0.180 in. wall to 8 3/8 in. OD X 1.0 in. wall. After piercing, the shells. were further processed by hot rolling, reeling, and sizing. Subsequent to these operations the shells were either supplied to the trade as "hot finished" tubes, or were processed by cold drawing to smaller sizes at the Huntington Works of the International Nickel Co. The extrusion of nickel and high nickel alloys also may be classed as a relative newcomer to the field of hot-forming methods, for it was not until 1928 that the commercial extrusion of these alloys was begun on a 600 long ton vertical extrusion press installed at Zenith Works of Henry Wiggin and Co., Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland. This press did considerable pioneer work and the results were so favorable that in 1937 a -2200 long ton horizontal press was installed. The quality of the inside surface of the tubing produced on this press was superior to that produced by piercing on a rotary-type mill and, as a result of this experience, a 4000 ton horizontal extrusion press was installed at the Huntington Works in 1943. Billet Preparation The first step in the extrusion, process is the selection of ingots with good hot malleability, as indicated by the test described by Martin and Bieber.1 Ingots then are forged into rough rounds which are machined to the desired billet diameter on a "bar peeler." This machine consists of a rotary head which carries the cutting tools and is driven by a 200 hp, dc motor. The feed mechanism consists of hydraulically driven input and output carriages on the respective sides of the cutter head. Dispersion-strengthened sintered aluminum products are normally manufactured from surface-oxidized aluminum powder, SAP,' or from atomized aluminum powder.' The powder-blending technique consisting in mechanical mixing of the constituents has been used in the manufacture of numerous dispersion-strengthening alloys, but has never been successfully applied to aluminum alloys. This technique may, however, be applicable if it is possible to produce an unagglomerated mixture of the constituents in the form of fine powders, and the present study was initiated to test this assumption in the aluminum/aluminum oxide system.3 Table I lists the two grades of aluminum powder and the aluminum oxide powder used in the manufacture of the alloys. MD 105 A is an aluminum powder with an average grain size less than 5 IJ., which is isolated from the MD 105 powder by centrifugal separation in cyclohexanol. The aluminum powders and the aluminum oxide were blended in a high-speed blender and then subjected to cold compaction and hot compaction at 550" to 600°C. Subsequently the compacts were hot-extruded with an extrusion ratio of 15 to 1. The alloys were evaluated by tensile testing at room temperature and at 400°C, microscopic examination, and heat treatment at 500°C followed by tensile testing at room temperature. For the purpose of comparison, a commercial SAP quality supplied by Swiss Aluminium Ltd. was tested in the same manner. A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged

Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5' to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30' to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. The four new oil-field discoveries made in the East and East Central Texas districts during 1941 were the East Long Lake field, Anderson County; Pickering field, Shelby County; Pleasant Grove field, Rusk County, and Tri-Cities field, Henderson County. The discovery of oil production in the Pettit lime of the Lower Glen Rose was made in the Groesbeck (Barron) field in Limestone County and the Willow Springs field in Gregg County. Important extensions were made to the Pittsburg field, in Camp County, the Chapel Hill field, in Smith County, and the Hawkins field, in Wood County. The Hawkins field was extended sufficiently to more than double the number of proved surface acres. As usual the East Texas field led the district in the number of completions for the year. The second most active field during the year was the Hawkins field, with 250 new wells completed. The third most active was the Long Lake field, in which 50 wells were completed. Approximately 964 wells were completed in the district during 1941. Production and Probation The district is credited with having produced 163,566,695 bbl. of oil and distillate during the year. This represents a decrease of 4 per cent from the 170,424,685 bbl. of oil and distillate produced during the preceding year. The production of 130,378,620 bbl. of oil and distillate from the East Texas field represents 79.7 per cent of the total production of the district; that is, 6.3 per cent less than the production for the year 1940, The district had an estimated basic daily allowable of 614,982 bbl. of oil on Dec. 31. Approximately 33 per cent of the state's annual production was produced in the district, compared with 34.9 per cent for 1940. Since the majority of the fields in this district are subject to proration, any change in the annual production is attributable largely to changes in proration schedules and number of shutdown days. Fields subject to shutdown days were closed in for 113 days during the year, with the exception of the East Texas field, which was shut down 111 days. An order was promulgated by the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission for encouraging the disposal of salt water and reservoir-pressure maintenance in the East Texas field. Discoveries Tex Harvey Oil Company'sNo. I S. E. J. Cartmel was completed as the discovery well for the East Long Lake field, Anderson County. Production was found in the Woodbine sand, the horizon from which the Long Lake field produces. The Pickering field, Shelby County, secures its production from the Nacatoch sand, found at an approximate depth of 1510 ft., in A. E. McKiernan's No. I, Pickering Lumbering Co. IN an earlier investigation by Jaffe and Buffum,' a time-temperature transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of an SAE 3140 steel showed some suggestion of two overlapping "noses." These authors mentioned, as a possible explanation, that their specimens embrittled at 525°C were slightly softer than expected, perhaps because of some slight unknown variation in tempering treatment. Because a double nose would be of considerable importance in elucidating the mechanism of the temper brittleness reaction,' it appeared worthwhile to redetermine the portion of the diagram near 525°C. The same heat of SAE 3140 steel was used as in the previous work, and experimental procedures were the same.' Blanks were austenitized 1 hr at 900°C, water-quenched, tempered 1 hr at 675°C, and water-quenched. Groups were then embrittled isothermally at the temperatures and for the times shown in Table I, and water-quenched. For comparison, one series was tempered various times at 675°C, water-quenched, and given no further treatment. V-notched Charpy impact specimens machined from the blanks were tested over a range of temperatures. Energy absorption and percentage of fibrous fracture were plotted vs test temperature for each group, utilizing both the new data and those for the same treatment obtained in the earlier work,' except that the earlier data at 525°C were discarded.* are given in Table I. After a small correction (-0.28°C/BHN) for the variation of hardness" from Rockwell C24, the transition temperatures were plotted against embrittling time for each embrittling temperature, using the data of Table I for the range of treatments covered there, and using previous dataL for other treatments. By cross-plotting, Fig. 1 was finally obtained. It appears from this figure that if there are two noses to the time-temperature-transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of SAE 3140 steel, the upper nose must lie above 575°C. As interest had been primarily in the region near 525°C, a thorough study of embrittlement above 575°C was not made. Fig. 1 shows that such a study is needed, especially since preliminary measurements at the tempering temperature of 675°C reveal much more rapid embrittlement than would be expected from the data at lower temperatures. The transition temperature increased, approximately, as the logarithm of the tempering time (about 81/2°C, after correction for hardness, for each doubling of the time).& Since three tensile specimens tempered 240 hr at 675°C and water-quenched had an average yield-tensile ratio of 0.844, with 70.7 pct reduction of area, it is assumed1 that the tempering temperature is not above Ae1. The omission of a quench-and-reheat operation below Ae1, for the groups tempered at 675°C, as compared to groups embrittled at lower temperatures, should not affect results." More detailed investigation of embrittlement above 575°C is now under way.

THE melting of cathode copper, usually containing 99.98+ per cent. Cu, would appear to be a simple matter. Owing to the well known affinity of copper for sulphur, however, so much sulphur is absorbed by the copper during the operation that a long and expensive refining process is required to remove it, and the final product is inferior in purity and lower in electrical conductivity than the original cathode copper. The furnace operation, as now conducted, includes the following stages: 1. Charging the cathodes into the furnace. 2. Melting the cathodes. 3. Oxidizing period-saturating the copper with cuprous sub-oxide and bringing the metal to the condition known as "set copper;" this is now done by blowing air into the molten bath of metal. 4. Reduction period, otherwise known as "poling," whereby the oxygen previously added is removed by covering the molten bath completely with coke or charcoal and introducing large poles of green wood; this reduces the cuprous sub-oxide, bringing the copper to the "tough pitch" stage ready for casting. 5. Casting Period. Many experiments have been made to obviate the long periods of oxidation and subsequent reduction, with no success. While the copper first, cast will be good, as indicated by the set surface of the bars, it is impossible to hold it to the "tough pitch" condition, and long before the whole charge has been poured the copper will become "overpoled," entailing numerous difficulties. Sulphur has always been blamed by the furnace men as the reason why this refining process is necessary, yet the literature on the subject does not sufficiently emphasize how small a proportion of sulphur will ruin copper for practical purposes.

THIS communication reports measurements of the densities of dilute liquid alloys of 0.1 and 0.5 pct Ag in Sn over temperature ranges of 170" and 210°C, respectively, above the melting point of pure tin (232°C). The work was earried out to provide accurate density data for some liquid diffusion studies performed by Davis.1 Densities were measured using a pycnometric technique established in this laboratory. Earlier papers2, 4 attest to the accuracy of ±0.05 pct and the reliability of the method. Tin, 99.999 pct pure, and silver 99.99 pct pure, were melted in a graphite crucible in a vacuum furnace and held at temperature for 10 hr to ensure homogenization. Ingots suitable for machining

Trends in the metal mining industry were definitely down in 1954. With a record in 1953 of $1.8 billion output, the last year dropped to $1.5 billion, the lowest value since 1950. The decrease in iron ore production alone accounted for at least 10 pct of the decline. PROBABLY more than any previous year, political debates of 1954 marked a new high for the mining industry. Lead and zinc prices gave forth with minor rallies producing no real improvements. An anticipated drop in copper prices never came to be. Early in the year arguments for more free trade versus tariffs to restrict imports were voiced eloquently by Charles P. Taft, president, Committee for a National Trade Policy, and Andrew Fletcher, president, St. Joseph Lead Co.

Bodies of pyritic ore in schistose rocks have long been known in different parts of the world. The several occurrences resemble each other in being usually of more or less lenticular shape, inclosed in walls of schist or gneiss, and carrying pyrite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite in varying proportions, as the chief ore minerals. The deposits differ, however, in that sometimes one, sometimes another, of the three sulphides mentioned may predominate. The orebodies in general are more or less closely conformable with the schistosity of the wall rocks, although in cases this may not hold true. The boundaries may or may not be sharp, but in general are fairly distinct. The lenses vary in size, may occur singly, or in groups; in the latter case they may be in line, overlapping, or occasionally parallel. Pinching and swelling of individual lenses is not uncommon. The genesis of these pyritic bodies has provoked much discussion, and they have been variously classed as sedimentary, igneous intrusions, hydrothermal replacements or impregnations, etc. Indeed, in some cases different geologists have most positively assigned widely diverse origins to the same deposit, as in the case of Rio Tintol and Rammels-berg.2 It is true that in the light of modern criteria, we have been able in a few cases to decipher clearly the process of origin and so there seems no. doubt now regarding the genesis of the deposits at Rio Tinto, Spain;3 Rammelsberg, Germany;4 Ducktown, Tenn.;5 southwestern Virginia;=

Since the mid-1930's a number of plants, using the principles of heavy media separation, have been installed throughout the world. In cases involving lead, zinc or lead-zinc ores the reasons for the choice of this type of beneficiation process have fallen into four major categories: A) The economic recovery of additional distinctly separate products, such as dolomite limestone at the Mascot Plant (1) of the American Zinc Co., and the ferrosilicon produced by St. Joseph Lead Company. (2) B) The elimination of a large portion of run-of-the-mine ore prior to grinding and flotation, to allow increased throughput with low capital cost. Examples of this approach are the Levante and Ponente plants of the Montevecchio Company in Italy (3) and the frequent choice of the Sink-Float process by the Penarroya Company of Paris. C) The processing of a sedimentary deposit, in which the valuable mineral is contained in the matrix separating the boulders, as was the case at the St. Joseph Lead Company plant at Haydon Creek (4) and also at Bunker Hill Mining and Smelting, Kellogg, Idaho. D) The simplification of Around support programs in mines by allowing greater freedom of action in the extractive pattern. An example of this choice is Cominco’s Sullivan plant which came into being as part of an extensive proposal to update the mining, crushing, transportation, grinding and beneficiation processes. (5)

The deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of copper, re-sulting from heating in contact with reducing gases, is well known, but the mechanism of the action does not appear to have been definitely established. The purpose of the present investigation was not to determine the exact variations in physical quality of commercial copper, with its various impurities, as dependent upon the composition of the gas, temperature of exposure, etc., but rather to study the nature of the action and the conditions under which it occurs. The physical result of the so-called "gassing" of copper has been generally described as the development of "brittleness." There appears to be a striking decrease in tensile strength, associated with a considerable loss of ductility, and a small copper strip or wire affected in this way can be snapped in two when bent. Larger articles may have an outer layer alone affected, which can be detached from the core by hammering or bending. Perhaps the earliest reference to this subject is that of Heynl in 1900, and among the later observers may be mentioned Archbutt,2 Bengough and Hill,3 Johnson,4 Mathewson and Thalheimer,5 and Ruder.6 Bengough and Hill, while working with arsenical copper, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gases within the copper itself, while Ruder endeavored to explain the action by the reduction of the

MAGNETIC torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade1,2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time 1.5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction, or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements.

For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyro- compasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyro- compass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.

The mining industry of Canada, stretching from coast to coast and reaching into the most remote regions of the country, is of fundamental importance to the national economy and the well being of many communities outside the main urban areas. The production, processing and transportation of a host of mineral products provide employment for about 9% of the country's labour force; and their shipment to export markets provides an important contribution to the balance of payments. In 1976 Canada's metal and mineral production had a value of $5.24 billion, of which zinc and lead accounted for $862 and $129 million respectively, or 19% of the total. By all standards the Canadian zinc and lead industry is large and, therefore, important to the country as a producer and the world as a supplier. This report will review the development, describe the present status and discus current problems and future potential of the industry. The discovery and successful development of the major lead-zinc deposits at Kimberley, British Columbia, provided Canada with a solid base from which to grow. The breakthrough in metallurgical technology using differential flotation to separate the lead and zinc sulphides and the refining of high purity metal by electrolytic methods not only helped Canada to compete with other world producers but also provided a new source of these metals at prices and qualities that encouraged the development of new end uses.
