Direct identification in situ of x and a phase precipitates in stainless steel is possible with the electron probe microanalyzer. Although particles in the 1 p size range are too small to yield absolute percent composition, the relative % Crfi Mo ratio can be used to distinguish the two phases with better than 95 pct confidence. Wet chemical analysis of extracted residues gives Cr/Mo ratios in good agreement with electron probe results extrapolated to the 4 to 5 p size range. IN the course of the examination, at the Bureau of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undertaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the Jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed."

The Fresnillo unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., is situated at the old historic mining town of Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, 33 miles north of the city of Zacatecas and 750 miles south of El Paso, Tex. It is connected with the Mexican Central Railroad by a broad-gage spur 5.5 miles long, belonging to the company. Fresnillo is surrounded by a broad semi-arid valley on the Mexican plateau at an elevation of 7300 ft. The monotony of the valley is broken by a number of low hills. Near the town of Fresnillo is the " Cerro de Proano," an elliptic-shaped hill of gentle slope, rising out of the plain to a height of 325 ft.; the base has a major axis of 4500ft. and a minor axis of 3000 ft. In this hill is the silver-bearing mineralized zone, which comprises past and present mining operations. (In this paper money values are expressed throughout in American currency and the dry short ton of 2000 lb. is used.) The discovery of ore at Fresnillo is credited to the Spaniards, soon after the conquest of Mexico. There are, however, no authentic records to show the amount of work done by them. In 1832, the State of Zacatecas took possession of the property and operated it. Evidently the rich ore above the horizon of the plain had been fairly well exhausted, as an old record states that thirty shafts were used for unwatering, requiring 300 men and 1500 animals. The cost of pumping alone amounted to $150,000 a year. In spite of the fact that cheap convict labor was used, mining costs were reported as $20 and treatment charges as $20 per ton. In 1835, the state was obliged to seek foreign capital, and a company formed in London secured a controlling interest in the property. This new organization sank two shafts, one 11 by 19 ft. and the other 10 by 15 ft., to unwater the mines and extract ore. Large Cornish pumps were purchased in England and hauled overland from Vera Cruz; engines also were installed to operate the arrastres (grinding mills) in the patio process of ore treatment. Substantial buildings were erected and operations were conducted on a large scale, for that period. The patio, the largest in Mexico, was 1150 ft. square. The costs for 1850 were:

External quantum efficiency measurements at 300" and 77°K are presented for vapor-grown GaAs and GaAs1-xPx electroluminescent diodes as a function of junction depth and doping. In GaAs, external efficiencies are found to decrease exponentially with increasing junction depth, defining an average absorption coefficient of 900 cm-1 at 300°K and 350 cm-1 at 77°Kfor epitaxial layers of p-type GaAs. It is shown that photon absorption losses dominate at room temperature and, in fact, account for most of the external efficiency degradation between 77° and 300°K. Healever, the internal ('junction) quantum efficiency is also found to decrease by a factor of 3.5 between 77" ALTHOUGH rapid progress has been made in recent years with GaAs, Gap, and their alloys for use in electroluminescent diodes, there are still important unknown factors related to the performance of these de- and 300°K. The dependence of GaAs efficiencies on donor and acceptor concentrations is presented, illustrating best efficiencies at donor concentrations of 1.5 to 2x 1018 cm-3 . External efficiencies are found to be independent of acceptor concentrations less than 3 x 1019 cm-3 but to degrade at higher doping. The fabrication of GaAsi-xPx electroluminescent diodes is briefly discussed. External efficiencies here for planar uncoated diodes are about 0.035 pct at 300°K and 0.4 pct at 77°for x = 0.42. A brightness of about 8500 ft-Lamberts is attained at 77°K and of 315 ft-Lamberts at 300° K. for curvent densities of 10 amp per sq cm. vices. For example, although the external efficiency is known to decrease by factors of typically 10 to 30 between 77°K and room temperature, the exact causes of this are still uncertain. Experimental results of ill' and carr2 with zinc-diffused electroluminescent diodes suggest that this external degradation is almost entirely due to increased absorption losses at room temperature, with a relatively temperature-independent internal efficiency; recent calculations by Gonda et al.3 corroborate this hypothesis. In contrast, Pilkuhn and Rupprecht4 find the internal efficiency of solution-grown GaAs laser diodes to degrade from 100 to 66 to 40 pct as the temperature is increased from

Pursuant to notice duly given in accordance with law and the constitution, a special business meeting of the members of the Institute was held at the office of the Institute on June 27, 1919, at 8.30 P.M., 1573 members were present in person or by proxy. On resolution duly made and seconded, the change of name to American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incorporated, was authorized and the officers of the corporation were instructed to take the necessary steps to accomplish this result. The votes were 1565 in favor of the resolution and 7 against. It was then moved and seconded that the certificate of incorporation be amended to define the purposes for which the corporation was formed as follows: "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in the industries by all lawful means, " etc., etc.-the remainder of the article reading the same. The purpose of this change was to allow the Institute to take any legal means it desires to accomplish the objects mentioned above instead of restricting it within narrow limits. The vote was 1573 in favor of the resolution and none against.

(Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May, 1877.) IN the number of the Engineering and Mining Journal for April 7th, 1877, Mr. W. P. Ward, of Cartersville, Georgia, explains in a very interesting manner, the results he obtained in the manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace. These results may be summed tip as follows : Production in the blast furnace of an alloy containing 67.2 per cent. manganese and 3 per cent. of carbon at most, with a utilization of the manganese amounting to 58 per cent. With the exception of the indicated proportion of carbon, which should be almost doubled to express the true state of facts, we would have had no observations to make on Mr. Ward's paper had he taken into account the results obtained in the same line in other centres of production. Before 1870, spiegel with 8 or 10 per cent. manganese only was known among blast-furnace products. In a journey to Sweden, in 1871, I ascertained that the Schysshyttan works manufactured regularly a spiegel with 18 per cent. manganese. In 1943, Illinois produced 82,256,000 bbl. of oil, or 5.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. The effect of rolling reduction on the textures of Cu-A1 alloys has been investigated both by pole figure and by modulus methods. In alloys which exhibit complete copper or brass types of rolling texture, the rolling reduction has little effect on the texture except to increase the degree of preferred orientation. In alloys which exhibit a transition texture, however, increased rolling reduction increases the amount of brass-type texture at the expense of the copper-type texture. The present experimental results show that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the SFE and the rolling texture of fcc metals. Additional data taken from the literature for fcc metals also support this conclusion. On the other hand, the present and previous experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the suggestion that the texture transition occurs at a critical value for the separation distance between two partial dislocations—a consequence of the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis for texture. formation. This critical separation occurs when the parameter .r/ub is 3.75 x 10'3. From this, a value for the SFE of 39 ergs per sq cm may be deduced for a Cu-2.85 at. pct A1 alloy. ThE correlation between the rolling texture of fcc metals and the stacking fault energy, SFE, was one of the first attempts to relate atomistic properties with the type of rolling texture.' This correlation gives a qualitative explanation for the experimental observation that the addition of alloying elements, which generally lower the SFE, changes the copper-type texture to a brass-type texture. The simplicity of this correlation had led to its general acceptance and even its quantitative use.' However, it is only a correlation and is largely based on descriptive features of pole figures, and on the poorly known SFE values in dilute alloys. Quantitative verification of this phenomenologi-cal correlation is, in fact, completely lacking. One purpose of the present study is to test this correlation. Another atomistic description for the formation of rolling texture is the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis of texture formation.3 In this hypothesis, the factor controlling the type of rolling texture depends on whether or not the separation distance between two partial dislocations exceeds a critical value. Materials having a separation of less than the critical value are supposed to exhibit a copper-type texture while those with a separation above the critical value are supposed to have a brass-type texture. At the critical value, it is expected that the material should show equal amounts of copper- arid brass-type orientations in their textures, i.e., a 50 pct transition texture. The SFE appears in this hypothesis as only one of several factors which determine the separation distance between partial dislocations. It is possible to test the validity of these two concepts by studying the rolling texture as a function of rolling reduction. Since the SFE per se is an intrinsic property of the metal, it should not, by definition, be influenced by local irregularities, such as variable stress conditions. Thus, no change in texture-type is expected to occur with changes in rolling reduction. On the other hand, according to the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis, any factor that effectively influences the separation distance of partial dislocations would be expected to change the rolling texture. Since the separation distance between partial dislocations is known to depend upon local stresses,4-6 it is anticipated that there would be an effect of the degree of reduction on the texture-type. Also, since applied stresses are more likely to increase, rather than to decrease, the separation between partials,4'5 the overall effect would be to increase the amount of material in the brass-type orientations as rolling reduction is increased. Furthermore, this reduction dependence would be most prominent in alloys exhibiting the transition texture since the distance between partials in those alloys is thought to be close to the critical value. Experimental data in the literature is insufficient to distinguish between these two alternatives. Haessner studied the effect of rolling reduction on textures in a series of Ni-Co alloys by means of the X-ray intensity-ratio technique,' and found that while one texture parameter indicated no reduction dependence the other indicated a slight dependence of the rolling texture on reduction in the range of 96 to 99 pct. As has been noticed previously, the intensity-ratio technique is a convenient but controversial method7 because there is no a priori reason to suggest which intensity-ratio would describe the texture most meaningfully. A more quantitative method of describing textures is found in terms of the orientation dependence of Young's modulus. Here, the type of modulus aniso-tropy associated with the copper-type texture is sufficiently different from that observed for the brass-type texture to allow the two types to be easily distinguishable and a quantitative measure of the amount of each can be deduced from the numerical results. This ability to provide quantitative data is particularly valuable when the two textures occur simultaneously in one alloy as is the case for the transition textures. In this paper the modulus method, supplemented by pole figure data, is used to look for an effect of roll: ing reduction the texture. Also by combining the texture measurements with recent determinations of the SFE in Cu-A1 alloys'0'" it should be possible to test for a relationship between the SFE and textures.

BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.

KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,1 who has also given particular information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.2 Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5 ½ tons of -35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore.
