With the object of improving the melting, casting, and working of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru, the effects of different melting atmospheres (reducing, oxidizing, and neutral), crucible linings, and annealing atmospheres have been studied. Some interesting observations are included about the solubility and diffusion of gases in palladium. THE object of the present work was to ascertain the effect of oxidizing, inert, and reducing ambient atmospheres on the melting and casting of palladium and a Pd-Ru alloy commonly used for jewelry. The need for such a study was indicated during World War I1 when jewelers experienced difficulty in their attempts to make small castings of the torch-melted Pd-Ru alloy by the lost-wax process. When the metal was melted under oxidizing conditions similar to those used for platinum, the castings were gassy; on the other hand, if the melting atmosphere was reducing, the castings were hot-torn and brittle. General Experimental Procedure Pure palladium sponge (99.9 pct Pd) and pure ruthenium powder (99.8 pct Ru) were used for making small ingots (50 g) of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru by induction melting. The coil, 3 in. high by 2 in. ID with 16 turns, was energized by a 20 kva Ajax high frequency converter. The melting crucibles, so-called sand crucibles, which were made of a highly refractory fireclay, were lined with different materials, including proprietary magnesia, alundum, zircon, and zirconia

Single crystals qf copper in "single slip" orientatiorzs have been deformed in compression. During defortnation all of the independent deformation parameters have been measured. These parameters consist of thefive strain components and three components descrihing the lattice rotation. By a finite strain analysis these pararmeters , forrming a deformation gradient martrix, are related to the amounts of slip on each of the twelve slip systems. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is about equal to the amount of primary slip. This is an order of magnitude larger than has been believed previoutsly. ACCORDING to early theory and experiments, when a single crystal of a fcc metal is deformed in tension or compression it should deform by slip on only one slip system until the stress axis reaches a symmetrical orientation.' However. the observation of a large increase in the secondary dislocation density during ..single slip" makes it clear that some slip does occur on secondary systems. Knowledge of the amount and distribution of this secondary slip is essential to a complete understanding of the mechanisms of single-crystal deformation. Ahlers and Haasen 2 and Mitchell and Thornton1 have tried to detect the amount of secondary slip in single crystals of silver and copper, respectively. Each simultaneously measured the angle A, between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and the length 1 of a gage section of the specimen after incremental amounts of deformation in tension. The measured A, was then compared with the theoretical single slip angle hp. given by sin Ap = j sin . hO where ?o was the initial angle between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and lo was the initial gage length. In both sets of experiments a small but systematic difference between ?e and ?p was found. This difference must be due to the occurrence of secondary slip. However, as Mitchell and Thornton1 pointed out. nothing quantitative can be said about the amount and distribution of this secondary slip from the measurements that they made. The reason that no quantitative conclusions could be made is because no unique solution for the distribution of slip on the twelve fcc slip systems can be determined from only two measured deformation parameters such as A and 1. There are, in fact, eight independent macroscopic deformation parameters that can be measured when a single crystal undergoes a homogeneous deformation. Physically these can be thought of as the five finite strain components and the three angles describing the crystal lattice rotation. All eight of these parameters were measured by Taylor4,5 for aluminum deformed in tension and compression. At that time the concern was to show that slip occurs on {111 (110) systems in fcc metals, and the mathematics were not available to determine what slip distributions were compatible with the measurements. In this paper the mathematics6,7 are developed that allow the slip distribution to be determined from these measurable macroscopic deformation parameters. The analysis is applied to the measurements of the strain and lattice rotation of copper single crystals deformed in compression. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is an order of magnitude larger than had previously been thought. CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF A HOMOGENEOUS DEFORMATION The deformation of a solid body can be represented by a transformation matrix F that transforms the un-deformed state into the deformed state. Consider a vector X connecting two material points in the unde-formed material and the vector x connecting the same two material points after deformation, where both vectors are referred to the same set of Cartesian axes. The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. In this article, the flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are described and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium-bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite1-3 and scheelite from calcite2,4 and apatite,2,5 for example, almost always involve the use of sodium silicate. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood, probably for a number of reasons. For one thing, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species.' Moreover, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na2O to SiO2, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system.' At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Pure samples of apatite (Durango), calcite (Iceland-spar), fluorite, and scheelite were used in this investigation. Pure potassium oleate was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 and KOH were employed for pH adjustment. The sodium silicates used were samples obtained from the Philadelphia Quartz Co. In one series of experiments, various sodium silicates containing different ratios of SiO2 to Na2O were added to calcite systems. These sodium silicates contained SiO2-to-Na2O ratios of 3.75 to 1, 3.22 to 1, 2.40 to 1, and 1.60 to 1. All other experiments were conducted with the sodium silicate containing the ratio of 3.22 to 1, which is the one that is normally used in industry. Flotation experiments were conducted with 21/2-g charges of 48 x 150-mesh material in conductivity water with an apparatus and technique described previously. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted with both a Zeta Meter and streaming potential apparatus. Particle size was 48 x 65 mesh for the streaming potential experiments. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The first series of experiments involved flotation of scheelite in the absence and presence of sodium silicate. As shown in Fig. 1, flotation response was not affected with even the relatively high addition of 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate. Interestingly though, no flotation was effected below pH 6 with this collector addition. The responses of apatite to flotation under these same conditions are given in Fig. 2. Similarly, no depression was obtained in basic media under these conditions. Similar experiments were conducted with fluorite, and in this case, depression was noted above about pH 11 with 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate (Fig. 3). When calcite was floated with these same levels of addition of sodium silicate, essentially no flotation was possible above pH 7 (Fig. 4). MOTT and Nabarro1-5 were first to illustrate the importance of the flexibility of dislocations in accounting for the strengthening that metals undergo due to the presence of internal-strain centers. Such strain-centers might arise from a number of causes such as radiation damage, the presence of semicoherent and coherent precipitates and clusters, as well as individually dispersed interstitial and misfit substitutional solute atoms. Each strain-center induces positive and negative shear stress fields on the slip planes of the surrounding alloy matrix. In order to effect plastic deformation, therefore, the alloy must be subjected to sufficiently high applied shear stresses to push dislocations past all such internal stress fields. If dislocations were inflexible and moved as rigid lines, they would be equally pushed and pulled by internal stress fields. At this extreme the strengthening would be vanishingly small. Dislocations, however, are not rigid; they are flexible and extensible. They wiggle between positive and negative strain-centers, thus increasing their line energy at the expense of their interaction energy with strain-centers. cottrel16 and Friedel7,8 have independently presented lucid reviews of the significance of the Mott-Nabarro dislocation-flexibility concept to the strain-center strengthening of alloys. Their analyses however were only semi-quantitative. There is evidence in the recent literature of renewed interest in a more rigorous analysis of flexibility. Thus, Gleiter9 and Gerald" have shown that the calculated strain-energy interaction between a dislocation and the stress fields of coherent precipitates can be seriously in error if the flexibility of the dislocation is not taken into account. This report will be concerned with a more detailed analysis of the problem based on the following approximations: 1) Although many types of strain-centers exist, the following analysis will be limited to the case of solute-atom strain-centers in fcc substitutional alloys. 2) To facilitate the analysis by avoiding statistical considerations, the strain-Centers are assumed to be in regular arrays on the slip plane. Although the quantitative results are somewhat dependent on the type of array that is assumed, the qualitative trends are similar for various arrays that were studied. 3) An adjustment of the results from those for square arrays to those for the more realistic case of a random distribution of strain-centers is accomplished by adopting the interesting statistical theory first introduced by Kochs,11,12 elaborated on by Dorn, Guyot, and stefansky,13 and analyzed by Foreman and Makin14 in their computerized experiments. 4) For simplicity the dislocation lines are taken to wiggle about their edge orientation and no correction is applied to their line energy for deviations from edge configurations or for the elastic interaction between segments of the now curved dislocation. It will be shown that for extremely low concentrations of atomic strain-centers the strengthening increases with the square root of their concentration. For slightly higher concentrations the strengthening rate becomes less rapid. At a critical concentration a maximum strength is obtained and a decrease in the strengthening takes place as the concentration of solute atoms is further increased. These trends are a direct consequence of dislocation flexibility. They arise from changes in the amplitude of the waviness of the dislocation line at the yield stress with solute atom concentration. Despite the simplifying assumptions that were made, the results agree qualitatively with appropriate experimental data. I) STRESS FIELDS ON SLIP PLANES Internal stresses are introduced in a lattice whenever a host atom of radius ro is replaced by another that has a different atomic radius. CARLTON mill in the Cripple Creek district, 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been in operation for approximately three years, treating the custom sulpho-telluride ores formerly handled by the Golden Cycle mill in Colorado Springs. At the new mill the pyrite-telluride flotation concentrates have been roasted, prior to cyanidation, in a Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which has proved capable of yielding calcine readily amenable to cyanidation. Incoming ores are crushed at Carlton to 5/8 in. and sampled in 30 to 75-ton lots before the individual lots are mixed in the fine ore bin. The composite ore then goes to the grinding circuit. Classifier overflow from the grinding circuit is treated by flotation to produce a concentrate containing approximately 85 pct of the values in 5 pct of the weight. The flotation concentrate goes to the FluoSolids reactor prior to cyanidation. Cyanide solution values are recovered by zinc dust precipitation. Flotation tailings are thickened and cyanided, the values from this part of the circuit being recovered from solution by activated carbon.

In 1952, beneficiated phosphate ore first began to move from the Oron plant of Negev Phosphates Ltd. in the Negev Desert to the super-phosphate plant at Haifa, Israel. Since that time this company has continually sought to overcome its natural handicaps affecting the operating efficiency and quality of the product in an effort to bolster the agricultural program of Israel and the development of an exportable commodity. The most serious deterrent to the development of a beneficiation process was the total absence of water. The Oron plant lies approximately 30 miles south of the irrigated regions of Israel with the nearest producing water well located about 10 miles to the northwest. The urgency of early phosphate production made it necessary to consider only dry processes in the initial operation. Fortunately, the ore was amenable to a dry process which yielded a usable concentrate assaying about 28.5 pct P2O5; but phosphate recovery was low. A description of the characteristics of the Negev ore should help to clarify the principles upon which the dry concentration is based.

Commercial stress -relieved TD Nickel bar was shown to retain room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength after exposure up to 2501°F. Cold swaging increased both room -temperature and 2000°F tensile strength. After annealing at 2500°F the strengthening due to swaging was retained at 2000°F hilt eliminated at room temperature. Annealing produced changes in hardness and X-ray half peak width indicating the presence of recovery processes as 1071° as 1000°F but no recrystallization of swaged material was noted at any temperature. In contrast to swaging, rolling induced a recrystal-lized structure after annealing. The tensile strength of this recrystallized structure was comparable to the cold-worked condition. High-temperature tensile properties of as -received bar were highly anisotropic with the transverse tensile strength being one fifth the longitudinal value. The aniso-/ropy is affected by working direction and may he partially reversed by changing the direction of metal flow. The divergence in tensile strength, beginning above 550°F or- approximate one third the absolute melting point, is strain-rate dependent. T D Nickel is a commercial dispersion-hardened alloy containing 2 vol pct thoria. The dispersion, consisting of spherical particles 0.030 to 0.050 in diameter with an interparticle spacing of less than 1 is reported to maintain stable properties up to 2400°F.1 This stability of second phase results in maintenance of elevated-temperature strength at higher temperatures and longer times than normal nickel-base superalloys.2 The purpose of this paper is to describe the effect of various mechanical working operations on the strength and microstructural stability of TD Nickel bar. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES All material used in this study was commercial TD Nickel bar. This material is produced by a chemical process which results in a nickel powder containing a dispersion of thoria particles. The powder is then pressed, sintered, extruded, and subsequently worked to bar stock. Three starting materials from three separate lots were used: as-extruded bar. 1-in.-diam stress-relieved bar, and 1/2-in.-diam stress-relieved bar. Since TD Nickel bar stock is cold-worked without a recrystalliza-tion anneal, the accumulated deformation or degree of cold work in these materials increases as the bar diameter decreases. Some of the 1/2-in.-diam bar was swaged to 1/4 in. diameter at room temperature in order to produce an as-worked condition for comparison with the stress-relieved stock. Tensile testing was performed on an Instron Tensile Tester at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. The 0.2 pct offset yield strength was measured from the load-crosshead movement plot. Specimen gage dimensions were 0.080 in. in diameter by 0.40 in. in length, producing a strain rate of approximately 0.050 min-1. Specimens were tested in air and heated within a resistance-wound furnace controlled to ±5°F. A 15-min soak at temperature was employed before testing. Samples were heat-treated in air and specimens machined after exposure with sufficient material removed to eliminate any surface contamination. X-ray line breadth was determined from a diffractometer scan of a transverse face of a bar using copper K, radiation. Metallographic preparation utilized standard mechanical polishing with Carapella's etch. Specimens for electron microscopy were electropolished in a 1:7 sulfuric/methaol solution and chromium-shadowed collodion replicas prepared. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Effect of Elevated-Temperature Exposure on the properties of TD Nickel. The effect of various elevated-temperature exposures on the room-temperature tensile strength of TD Nickel is shown in Table I. In the unexposed condition the tensile strength, reduction in area, and hardness all increase with increasing accumulated deformation while the elongation decreases. After exposure at 2500°F the strength of all three materials decreases to about 65,000 psi and the elongations increase slightly. The apparent increase in strength of the 1-in. bar after a 2000°F treatment is probably experimental scatter. These results indicate that the room-temperature strengthening due to additional deformation is annealed out upon elevated-temperature exposure. In contrast to the room-temperature data, the 2000°F tensile strengths increase in order of increasing deformation even after exposure. In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. This is evidently inadequate;

INTRODUCTION This paper is directed toward those companies or individuals who may be considering the possibility of tin exploration or development projects in South America. Although tin deposits are known in many countries of Latin-America including Argentina, Peru, and Mexico, the majority of the deposits are located in Bolivia and Brazil. These two countries also account for virtually all the current production. Many factors affect the economic decisions related to mining and exploration projects in this region including the following: 1) Types of deposits 2) Anticipated size and grade of deposits 3) Deposit geometry and ore distribution as it affects the selection of a mining method 4) Metallurgical amenability 5) Governmental policies 6) Taxation 7) Anticipated capital and operating costs 8) Marketing costs This discussion will be directed toward each of these points. The majority of the presentation will be concentrated on Bolivia as this country is the principal producer in the region, however, the potential for further tin development in Brazil is excellent. Due to the remote and previously almost inaccessible location of the stanniferous districts of Brazil, little is known with respect to size and type of non-alluvial deposits which may exist in this vast country. TYPES OF DEPOSITS Two major types of deposits are currently being exploited in Bolivia; alluvial, and hard rock or lode deposits. Bolivia produces substantial tin from both types of deposit whereas virtually all Brazilian production to date has been from alluvial sources. Alluvial Deposits Brazil: The alluvial tin deposits of Brazil are located in river channels and flood plains adjacent to low mountain ranges. The terrain containing the tin placers is flat, marshy, and generally jungle covered. The major controls of alluvial cassiterite concentration are the ancient and present stream channels. The average tin concentration in the placers varies from 500 grams to approximately 1.0 kilograms per cubic meter. Tin reserves in the Rondonia field of Brazil have been estimated at 600,000 tons of fine tin. A bucketwheel suction dredge went into production in the Rondonia district in 1979, and four others have since been ordered. Several other gravel pump, and hand mining operations are also in production in this field. In addition to the Rondonia district, tin occurrences are known from Xingu, in Para state, and in the state of Minas Gerais. Bolivia: The alluvial deposits of Bolivia are somewhat more complex due to the variable geomorphology and abrupt topography. Conventional placer accumulations of cassiterite are found in many stream channels and intermontane basins surrounding the major lode tin producing regions. In addition to stream and valley placers, a group of deposits locally referred to as "Pallacos" or "Llamperas" which consist of colluvium, landslide debris and glacial moraine material, contain substantial tin reserves in some areas. The stream channel and intermontane basins contain the only deposits which are presently being exploited by mechanized methods. One dredge is working the stream channel below Cerro Rico de Potosi and another is operating in an intermontane basin southeast of the city of Oruro. Both of these dredges are operated by private companies. The average grade for these operations varies from 250 to 500 grams per cubic meter. The largest of the intermontane basin placers known at present is the Centenario deposit located adjacent to the Catavi lode deposit. This deposit contains approximately 170 million cubic meters of material with an average grade of about 150 grams per cubic meter. The "Pallacos" deposits are found on the slopes of mineralized areas and in glacial moraine. The mineralized material is generally completely unsorted, with tin and sometimes tungsten values distributed erratically throughout the entire mass. Most of these deposits are worked by small leasors or cooperatives; however, at least one mechanized washing plant is in operation southeast of Oruro. The size of these deposits may reach up to several million cubic yards. Grades are very erratic, but may range from 200 to 500 grams per cubic yard. In addition to the formal mining operations, virtually every drainage surrounding the major mines is being worked by independent' miners utilizing hand mining and jig or pan concentration. UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

The notch sensitivity of titanium alloys is affected by impurity content, microstructure, and heat treatment. Using notch tensile properties to evaluate notch sensitivity, three commercial titanium-base alloys were investigated over the temperature range of -320o to 390°F. The alloys studied were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo. Six interstitial levels were studied for each alloy in four mi-crostmctural conditions. The ff- 0 alloys were studied in both the annealed and heat-treated condition. All tests were conducted using 1/4-in. diam round tensile samples. The notched samples had a 50 pct notch with a notch sharpness (a/r) of 53, corresponding to Kt 6.3. Notch sensitivity was increased by increased interstitial content, low temperature, and acicular-type microstructures. The heat-treated, high-interstitial content - 13 alloys were more notch sensitive than the same alloys in the annealed condition. In addition, minima in the notch tensile-temperature curves were observed at temperatures near 32°F. These minima became more pronounced with increasing interstitial content. 1 HE increaseduse of titanium alloys in high strength applications at subzero temperatures requires that a better under standing of the low-temperature behavior of the alloys be obtained. At low temperatures, metals generally exhibit increased strength with lowered ductility and tohness. Notch sensitivity and the factors which influence it become more important as the strength level is increased and the temperature is decreased. Some of the factor s which affect notch sensitivity in ti- tanium alloys are composition, interstitial content, microstructure, and heat-treatment condition. In this paper, the results of a study of these variables on the notch sensitivity of three titanium alloys at temperatures from —320o to 390o are reported. The notch geometry selected for this program was chosen to provide a severe test of notch sensitivity. The ability of the metal to flow without initiating fracture under these severe conditions is reflected in the notch-strength values. Since notch strength is, in part, determined by the constraint exerted by the combined tensile stresses, the behavior of notch specimens reflects the properties of the material under combined stresses. For example, a material with a high notch-unnotch strength ratio may be expected to withstand the biaxial stresses encountered in a pressure vessel better than a material with a low ratio of notch-unnotch strengths. This implies that maximum strength alone is not a sufficient criterion for applications of this type. It further may be concluded that the various conditions that promote poor notch behavior also will affect adversely the performance of materials under combined stresses. In the alloys studied, these included low temperatures, high interstitial levels, and hasformed microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Three alloys, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo, were purchased from commercial producers as 2-in.-dam rod stock. Oxygen and nitrogen were added to these alloys by remelting to obtain a variety of interstitial contents as shown in Table I. In order to Compensate for the much more potent strengthening effect of nitrogen compared with oxygen, an oxygen equivalent content is used to describe the total oxygen plus nitrogen contents studied. Tlze condition of superplasticity or neck-resistanl flow that results front high strain-rate sensitivity has been observed in isothermal tension tests on several titanium alloys and one of zirconium hi general, il was associated with reasonably fine-grain micro-structures being stvained in the transformation range at rates below i - 10 -3 sec-&apos;. The metallographic mean-free path, L, was measured at room temperature after rapid cooling from the temperature of test-ing. The flow stress of Ti-GAL-4V at 950°C was proportional to La at different constanl <; the value of a decreased with increasing. E but at E< 1.5 x 10-4 sec-1 it varied only from 0.9 to 1.25. The findings were interpreted to mean that viscous boundary shear is the rate-controlling process of deformation at high levels of strain rate sensitivity in these materials. Elongation of over 1000 pet could be obtained, but a1 temperatures so high and rates so low that any practical application of the full effect would probably be difficult. As the transformation range was narrowed, by turning from Ti-6AL-4V to Ti-5Al-2.5sn to nomznally pure titanium, the allowable temperature varialion was correspondingly reduced. Superplasticily was not found in Armco iron, presumably because the transformation range was too narrow to allow the developtnenl of a reasonably stable microstructure for isolhermal lesting. THE work represented by this paper grew out of a recent study of texture hardening in a(hcp) titanium and zirconium-alloy sheet,&apos; of which part has now been published.2 It was found that, with heating, the tensile plastic-anisotropy index, R,* was decreased from well above 1 towards 1 as the temperature range for the a(hcp) -ß(bcc) phase change was entered. The clearest example of that trend is illustrated with previously unpublished data in Fig. 1. It might have been thought that such a development resulted simply from introduction of the cubic and therefore plastically less anisotropic phase. However, the accompanying change in the index of tensile strain-rate sensitivity, m = a log a/a log E, was rapidly upwards, to a high of 0.85 in some cases (also illustrated in Fig. 1). At the same time, the total tensile elongation rose to a maximum and the flow strength dropped away as R (and m) approached 1. Taken together, the observations cannot be understood as resulting from the presence of cubic phase, per se. It has been concluded instead that they reflect the largely noncrystallographic deformation which characterizes superplasticity. As demonstrated in other recent work? a necessary condition for super-plasticity is strain-rate sensitivity of flow stress sufficiently high that m is above a lower limit of -0.3. The origin of large m has been traced, in turn, to grain size so small that a substantial amount of viscous deformation is introduced by such processes as Nabarro-Herring diffusional flow4 and/or grain boundary shear.5,6 Because of problems in the processing of titanium and zirconium alloys—problems of high strength, limited ductility, and excessive springback, originating largely in slip resistance-it was natural to wonder if something useful might be done with superplasticity in those materials. Therefore experiments were made for more closely identifying and generally bounding the phenomenon with temperature and strain-rate limits, before attempting to decide about its exploitation. The results are being reported here. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The two of primary interest were the titanium alloys of nominal composition (in wt pct) 5A1-2.5Sn and 6A1-4V. Others were a 4A1-1/4O2 titanium alloy, titanium of commercial purity (RC-70), Zircaloy-4. and Armco iron. All were received as annealed 3/16 in. thick sheet, except RC-70 which was & in. thick, and tested in that condition. Details of transformation temperature and grain size are given in Table I. The results of dilatometry for the measurement of transformation temperatures were unsatisfactory. Data were finally obtained by metallographic examination of each specimen after test, to determine from the amount of transformed 4 where the specimen had been heated in relation to the critical temperatures. DURING the past 5 years, five new copper-smelting plants have been built and put into operation in the State of Arizona. The monthly copper output from these plants averages from 5,000,000 to 18,000,000 lb. Previously, there never was as much activity in copper-smelting plant construction in the same length of time in all the rest of the world. Naturally, in this amount of work, some new problems were met and new features in plant design and. equipment developed. Some of these features are described in this paper. CONCENTRATE HAULING, UNLOADING AND SAMPLING SYSTEM (a) Concentrate Car The International Smelting Co. has provided at its plant at Miami specially designed cars for hauling the concentrates from the mills of the Inspiration Copper Co. and the Miami Copper Co.. The car has a bottom that is readily made tight to hold flotation concentrates and is quickly and cheaply unloaded. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show views and details of the car. The main feature of this car is the slot in the bottom throughout its length, which is closed by means of short planks that overlap like ship-lap as shown by Fig. 1. At one end of the car an iron gate operated by a screw and hand wheel is provided, which clamps or presses the planks together, making the bottom tight. A removable tapered plug rests vertically over this gate when the loading of the concentrates at the mill commences.

THE Premium Price Plan for copper, lead, and represent, the approach of the Office of Price Administration to the urgent of wartime problem of securing increased output of nonferrous metals. Some of the problems encountered in too operation of the Plan and the considerations which led to it?s adopt it will here he reviewed. The Plan provides for extra payment by the Metals Reserve Co., to mine operators who exceed established quotas of production. Producers are thus directly, compensated for the higher costs of working ores that are not commercial at the ceiling price, although the metal obtained from these ores is directed into regular channels of distribution at the established prices for copper, lead, and zinc. Higher-cost metal is thus available to fabricators and to the government agencies at the regular ceiling price and the dual objective of increased production and table pries is achieved.

PROBABLY the most critical and difficult period in an engineer&apos;s career is that between the completion of his college work and his attainment of professional recognition and accepted status in the industrial world. Upon leaving school the young graduate breaks his immediate ties with his educational institution and in a sense finds himself adrift. At this time in his life a society like our Institute has both the responsibility and the privilege of meeting a vitally important need in his professional life. Some of these young men are Student Associates, in the year after graduation, and some are Junior Members, but all need advice and assistance. In some respects this situation will be accentuated by the war. Not only will thousands of young engineers be mustered out of military service but the process we describe generally as industrial reconversion will make necessary many readjustments in personnel. About two years ago the Institute recognized the opportunity of helping the younger member to help himself by appointing a new standing committee to be known as the Committee on Professional Development of Junior Engineers. Herbert Hoover is Honorary Chairman and it is my privilege to serve as Chairman. The name of the Committee is not entirely satisfactory but it expresses the general objective. The present article is in the nature of a progress report of the work of this Committee.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers&apos; opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

THE Institute of Metals held a well rounded out symposium on the working of metals, distributed over two sessions. At the first session* four papers were presented, two dealing with the, cold working of metals and alloys and two with the hot working of non-ferrous alloys. The first paper by E. V. Crane, dealt with "Metal Working in Power Presses." Mr. Crane pointed out the empirical nature of engineering data available for use in calculating the probable stresses developed and power requirements, for the shearing, drawing, binding and other forming operations. He described the various operations, methods of determining stresses developed and presented data obtained. In the discussion C. F. Hammond took exception to Mr. Crane&apos;s objections to the rather too frequent. annealing operations in drawing of cartridge cases, pointing out that the material was-manufactured to meet specified structure and physical requirements, which could only be met by carefully controlled sequences of working and intermediate annealing operations.
