(Resident Engineer, 1873-75.) SEVERAL statements have been made to the Institute, somewhat detached from each other, as to the cost of some parts of these works, but they have not included any extended description of the. buildings or machinery. The general plan of the work connected with the water supply differs, in some important details, from that which has been common either in the Pittsburgh district or elsewhere, and a somewhat extended description may be of interest to the Institute, in connection with a note of the cost of the work. The plan as a whole, and nearly all the important details, were developed by Mr. William P. Shinn, C.E., the general manager of the Company. The immediate and responsible charge of the work was in the hands of Mr. John C. Lewis, C.E., to whom had been committed all the work of this general description, including the laying-out of the whole of the foundations, the erection of the buildings, and the grading and laying down of the entire railroad system. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and economy of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the water-works conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

Metallurgical processes cannot be conducted successfully With out the aid of analytical chemistry. The great perfection of Iead smelting in the West, for instance, has only been accomplished by the analysis of ores, fluxes, slags and all products of the furnace. Ores are mixed and fluxed to obtain a slag of desired composition. Account is even taken of the composition of the ashes obtained from the coke. The " muscular " smelter has left the field forever! This state of affairs has been induced by sharp competition, i.e., by a com plete separation of the industries of mining and reducing ores, not by the liberality and wisdom of directors and stockholders to pro vide laboratories and engage chemists, or by their love for scientific investigation. It would be considered absurd, at present, to run a lead-smelter, a blast-furnace for pig-iron, or a Bessemer plant without the assist ance of a well-equipped laboratory and a chemist; but it is con sidered quite sufficient to provide amalgamation- or lixiviation works merely with a crude assay-office, and an assayer who is paid less than a laborer in the mill. In my opinion, this will change in the near future. By the ex clusion of Mexican lead-ores, and their growiring scarcity in the West, smelters have been forced to raise their charges on so-called dry silver-ores, and cannot handle the latter now in such unlimited quantities as formerly. The inevitable result must be that the sur plus of these dry silver-ores, especially those of low grade, will be reduced by processes cheaper than smelbing; and here the introduc tion of lixiviation has an excellent field, provided the muscular lixiviator has an able chemist for an assistant. It is to be regretted that so little analytical work has been done in lixiviation. We know almost nothing of the composition of roasted ores before and after lixiviation; of the constitution of the first wash water and of lixiviation-solutions after prolonged use; of the chemistry of sodium and calcium sulphides; of the col-hposition

EVERY reader of this paper is well aware of the fact that the prolonged inhalation of large amounts of free silica dust results in fibrosis of the lungs, and that other inorganic dusts, except those of asbestos and the mineral poisons, are thought to be relatively harmless. But probably few have had opportunity to visualize the effects of silica, asbestos and other minerals upon living tissues. The ideal demonstration would be based upon sections of lungs from human beings that had inhaled com- parable concentrations of different dusts for a unit period of time. Such material is generally difficult to obtain and in some instances is of questionable value because the subject has been exposed to more than one kind of dust. A demonstration could be prepared from the lungs of animals. However, so many months or even years are required to complete the exposure to each kind of dust that enough material has not been accumulated. For a general survey of the action of different types of dust, I am therefore compelled to use the tissues of animals that have been injected with suspensions of dust particles. The injection method offers certain advantages. The quantity, the particle size and the state of dispersion can be controlled with sufficient accuracy so that the tissue responses to different minerals can be accurately compared. The method insures contact between the tissues and the mineral particles; protective mechanisms, which may prevent the inhalation of certain types of foreign body, never come into play. If the pathway of injection be one that minimizes nonspecific injury, the tissue responses may simulate those produced by inhalation but they develop somewhat more rapidly. It should always be remembered that injection methods merely demonstrate the capacity of various kinds of minerals to provoke reaction in the tissues; whether the same substances are inhaled from atmospheric suspension and accumulate in the lungs in dangerous quantities can be demonstrated only by inhalation. The reactions that I shall discuss first took place not in the lungs but in the liver. For the purpose in hand this is quite immaterial for we are merely seeking to discover whether these minerals are capable of produc-

Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their, warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast-moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. A large-scale water-injection program for the Holt Bryant reservoir of the Delhi field has been established by means of the new automatic multi-pool analyzer. The objectives of this program were to increase reservoir pressure and eliminate a cross-dip gradient of 200 psi. Pressure increases during the first 15 months of operation have allowed for increased oil production rates of 2,600 BID or 25 per cent. To determine the required water injection it was necessary to predict natural water influx ram. Elimination of the pressure gradients required the water-injection program to account for the fluid migration and pressure interaction between segments of the reservoir. An integral part of the ana1ysis included the determination of in-place volumes of oil and gas. The operation of the automatic multi-pool analyzer in determining the water-injection program is described. New features of the analyzer inc1ude an automatic maferial balance analog and a leart-squares computer for determination of unknown reservoir properties. Operational procedures are sufficiently simple to allow direct use by reservoir engineers on a routine basis. The rapidity and accuracy with which problems may be solved permit repeated ana1yses as a check upon reservoir performance. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a new analog com- puter in determining the optimum injection program for a complex reservoir. The Holt-Bryant (Fig. 1) is the major reservoir in the Delhi field of Louisiana. Production is from the Tuscaloosa at subsea depths of 2,970 to 3,286 ft. The sand dips to the south and southwest from three to five degrees. The reservoir is approximately 12 miles long and varies in width from 1/2 to 2 miles. Various calculations have placed the initial volume of oil in-place in the wide range of 275 to 355 million STB. Two small gas caps were initially present in the reservoir. The Holt-Bryant reservoir was discovered in Dec.. 1944, and was fully developed with 188 producing wells by 1948. IN 1943 the U. S. Bureau of Mines undertook drilling in an effort to develop new reserves of coking coal in an area near Paonia, Colo., as a part of an attempt to alleviate the shortage of known coking coal of good quality in the western United States. Geologic mapping of the area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey with the purpose of first furnishing guidance in location of drillholes and later aiding in interpreting the results of the drilling. The drilling program was under the general supervision of A. L. Toenges of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. J. J. Dowd and R. G. Travis were in charge of the work in the field. Geologic mapping was started by D. A. Andrews of the Geological Survey in the summer of 1943 and was continued from the spring of 1944 to 1949 by the writer. The first few holes drilled failed to locate coking coal, but in the summer of 1944 coking coal was discovered by drilling 6 miles east of Somerset, Colo., the site of present mining. In the succeeding years, 1945 to 1948, 100 to 150 million tons of coal suitable for coking were blocked out by drilling. The ensuing discussion of the geologic controls on the distribution of coking coal in the area is based on the geologic mapping as well as the drilling done in the Paonia area, more complete descriptions of which have appeared or are in process of publication."' In order that the possible geologic controls affecting the present distribution of coking coal may be considered, it is necessary to discuss briefly the indicators of coking quality coals. Coking Coal Coal that cokes has the property of softening to form a pastelike mass at high temperatures under reducing conditions in the coke oven. This softening is accompanied by the release of the volatile constituents as bubbles of gas. After release of the contained gases and upon cooling, a hard gray coherent but spongelike mass remains that is referred to as coke. This substance varies greatly in physical properties and, to be suitable for industrial use, must be sufficiently dense and strong to withstand the crushing pressure of heavy furnace loads. Western coals have a generally high volatile content and therefore form a satisfactory coke only when they attain a rather high fluidity during the process of heating arid distillation in the coke oven. When this high degree of fluidity is developed, the volatile constituents escape and leave a finely porous coke. On the other hand, when the degree of fluidity is low the product is an excessively porous and therefore physically weak mass that is called char." Small quantities of oxygen present in coal are believed to decrease the fluidity of the material during the coking process and to favor the development of char rather than coke. In consequence, coal chemists have for some time considered the possibility of developing an index to coking qualities by inspection of chemical analyses of coals.' A formula has now been developed that does permit a rough preliminary estimate of the cokability of coal on the basis of the analysis on an ash and moisture-free basis. Coals may be eliminated as possible coking fuels if the oxygen content is greater than 11 pct. Similarly the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen must be greater than 0.5 and the ratio of fixed carbon to volatile constituents must be greater than 1.3. If the coal, on the basis of these limiting factors, appears to have possible coking qualities, the following formula permits determination of the coking index: a+b+c+d Coking index = -------- 5 a equals 22/oxygen content on ash and moisture-free basis, b equals two times the hydrogen content divided by oxygen content on moisture and ash-free basis, c equals fixed carbon/l.3 x volatile matter, and d equals the heating value on moist, ash-free basis/13,600. Coking indices higher than 1.0 suggest that the coal will coke, and indices above' 1.1 indicate good coking tendencies. Although generally usable, this formula 'is not completely satisfactory because the percentage of oxygen shown in ultimate analyses is derived only by difference; i.e., by subtracting the sum of the percentages of the constituents determined analytically from 100 pct. Although the coking index indicates the coking tendencies of coal, it is necessary to make physical tests of coke before its industrial value can be determined. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed a standard procedure for determining the approximate strength of coke that would be formed from a given coal. In this test one part of ground coal, mixed with 15 parts of carborundum, is baked to form a standard briquette. The weight, in kilograms, necessary to crush the briquette is termed the agglutinating index. This test determines the relative fluidity attained in the coking process by measuring the cementing strength of the coal in the briquette. A

Alaska requires an adequate fuel supply for its development, and has large potential coal reserves ranging from lignite to subbituminous and anthracite. Coal production in the Territory now is less than the requirements. In L947, production was 361,000 tons, divided about equally between bituminous coal from the Matanuska field and subbituminous coal from the Nenana field. There is need for development of modern mechanized mines, which should produce the required output with a minimum of workers. These mines should not be thought of in the light of large potential capacity, as in the States. However, these new mines should be developed by modern methods, which should result in lower costs than at Present. Because of the diverse physical conditions in the coal fields, intensive investigation by diamond drilling is necessary to properly plan the development and equipment of mine sites at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines is doing this now in the Wishbone Hill area of the Matanuska field. All coal land in Alaska is government-owned and subject to the Coal Leasing Act. Coal mining in Alaska has been handicapped by an inadequate supply of dependable workers. Wage scales have been very high in recent years, and "floaters" have been attracted to the coal mines. This type of labor is not conducive to efficient operation. Modernization of mines will require skilled and dependable workers and to induce such men to become interested in coal mining in Alaska, modern facilities, such as modern houses, schools, churches, and recreation halls, must be provided near the mines. Alaska is still a frontier and improvements in living standards must accompany development of mines in order that a stable community may be established. Coal is known to have been mined in Alaska at Port Graham, on Cook Inlet, by the Russians in 1854. During the Klondike gold rush in 1898, coal was mined in scattered areas for use on steamers plying the Yukon River and its navigable tributaries. After the Alaska Railroad was built, two important fields were developed—the Nenana and the Matanuska (Fig 1). The Bering River field was explored by the Guggenheim interests at one time, and a railroad to the area was constructed. However, the field was abandoned because of litigation and reported unsatisfactory physical condition of the beds. There are areas that today are unimportant but which may be developed in the future. Possibly the most important of these is the deposits of subbituminous coal adjacent to Cook Inlet, near Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula (see Fig 1). It is expected that the demand for coal in the Kenai Peninsula will increase because the population in that area has increased as a result of agricultural development. Numerous outcrops of coal are exposed on the peninsula and development of a mine there would obviate dependence on supplies of coal from the Matanuska field. Coal from this field must be shipped approximately 160 miles by rail to Seward and transported thence by boat about 180 miles to Homer. There has been no regular boat service from Anchorage to Homer. There are deposits of coal in the Arctic region but a description of them will not be given in this paper, which will describe the more important deposits in the Alaska Railroad belt. The results of a reconnaissance in the Arctic have been described.' Description of Fields MATANUSKA FIELD The Matanuska field lies in the valleys of the Matanuska River and its tributaries and their separating ridges. This field has been interpreted by geologists as a sunken fault block that separated the Talkeetna Range of mountains from the Chugach Range. The Matanuska River flows west along the south side of the field and the Glenn highway, which extends from Anchorage via Palmer to the Richardson highway near Glen Allan, follows the Matanuska Valley. The objective of this chapter is to review and discuss interpolation techniques commonly in use in the mining Industry today, including simple examples. This chapter will not attempt to compare the relative accuracy of each technique as this subject has adequately been covered by several authors (Knudsen and Kim, 1967; David, 1974; and Barnes, 1979) When appropriate, methods will be compared relative to the results of simple examples and computational ease. The examples presented are based on metallic deposits. The techniques, however, are not restricted to metallic deposits and can generally be applied to nonmetallic ones. The purpose of interpolation, as applied to a mineralized deposit, 1s to extend the knowledge of the grade and geology of localized samples to an estimate of the grade and mineralogy of a larger block of ground or even an entire deposit. The word interpolation means to compute values between given values and is limited to that region between the known values. The distinction between interpolation and extrapolation is important and must be adhered to in the application of these techniques in general, the interpolation must be limited to the area enclosed by verified samples. The methods being discussed can be broadly broken into three categories. ( 1 ) geometrical methods, (2) distance weighting methods, and (3) geostatistical techniques.

Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.

The Empire IV expansion is on schedule for completion in January 1980; Hibbing Taconite's 2.7 million ltpy* expansion should be finished late in 1979; and Reserve Mining's tailing disposal project is on target for April 1980. Erie Mining Co., the first to bring 170-ton haulage trucks to the Mesabi Range, reports excellent operating results, and Inland Steel expects to produce 80% of its pellets in 1979 using coal rather than oil. One Michigan mine has so many inspectors that it has hired a school bus to transport them around the operation; and a contractor reports that mine construction projects of the future may require the training of 15,000 workers. All of this was covered at the 52nd Annual Minnesota Section AIME Meeting and the 40th University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, a joint event held each January in Duluth.

All of the coals commonly used in domestic bituminous stokers form coke, and satisfactory operation depends upon the fact that the coke formed is so weakly bound together that it breaks readily in the normal operation of the stoker and automatically maintains a good fuel bed. Some coals, because of their tendency to form solid, blocky coke, are practically excluded from use in small domestic stokers as now built. Other coals, some among the best stoker coals available, can form this troublesome coke under certain conditions. Many contradictory methods have been offered as cures for coke formation. Generally the procedure has been to try various adjustments until a combination was found that seemed to give better results. Such random methods of treatment have not provided any reliable information as to causes. The present paper covers a comprehensive test program undertaken by the Koppers Company's Stoker Coal Research Laboratory at Kearny, N. J. The program had two main objectives; first, to discover what factors affected coke formation, and second; to define corrective steps that could be applied in stoker service work. Conclusions and Results i. The design of the stoker outweighs in importance all other factors capable of improving coke formation. 2. Insufficient air supply aggravates the formation of large blocky coke, although raising the air above 30 to 40 per cent excess (as determined during steady running) does not further improve the character of the coke formed and only reduces its accumulation at the expense of efficiency, increased fly ash, poorer clinker-ing, and other disadvantages. 3. Increasing the coal feed results in a somewhat more friable coke structure and is recommended for persistently troublesome jobs. 4. All of the coals commonly used in domestic bituminous stokers form coke, and satisfactory operation depends upon the fact that the coke formed is so weakly bound together that it breaks readily in the normal operation of the stoker and automatically maintains a good fuel bed. Some coals, because of their tendency to form solid, blocky coke, are practically excluded from use in small domestic stokers as now built. Other coals, some among the best stoker coals available, can form this troublesome coke under certain conditions. Many contradictory methods have been offered as cures for coke formation. Generally the procedure has been to try various adjustments until a combination was found that seemed to give better results. Such random methods of treatment have not provided any reliable information as to causes. The present paper covers a comprehensive test program undertaken by the Koppers Company's Stoker Coal Research Laboratory at Kearny, N. J. The program had two main objectives; first, to discover what factors affected coke formation, and second; to define corrective steps that could be applied in stoker service work. Conclusions and Results i. The design of the stoker outweighs in importance all other factors capable of improving coke formation. 2. Insufficient air supply aggravates the formation of large blocky coke, although raising the air above 30 to 40 per cent excess (as determined during steady running) does not further improve the character of the coke formed and only reduces its accumulation at the expense of efficiency, increased fly ash, poorer clinker-ing, and other disadvantages. 3. Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

Orientation relationships and rates of annealing of 97 pct cold rolled zirconium have been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurements. The process of annealing occurring by the formation of domains, and their subsequent growth without recrystallization, is demonstrated. NUMEROUS investigators1-' have revealed sub-grain formation after annealing cold worked metal single crystals and have generally described the results in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization.5,6 in heavily cold rolled polycrystal-line aluminum the first stages of heating cause an apparently spontaneous subdivision of regions of the deformed matrix into a great number of slightly disoriented domains followed or accompanied by rapid growth of certain domains to form a recrystallization texture.7,8 In the present investigation the isothermal rate of annealing of cold worked polycrystalline zirconium has been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurement. It will be shown that, rather than by the usual nucleation and growth mechanism,"12 the process of annealing can best be explained by the formation of domains early in the annealing treatment and the subsequent growth of these domains without recrystallization. Experimental Procedure All the experimental work was performed on an arc-melted ingot of high purity zirconium crystal bar made by Westinghouse in a production scale deBoer unit. The weight percentage of impurities in the zirconium were as follows: C, 0.04; Fe, 0.05; Hf, 0.014; W, 0.01; Ti, Ni, and Al, 0.003; Si and N, 0.002; Cr and Cu, 0.001. Metallographically the zirconium showed only a single phase. The 4 in. diarn ingot was forged at 760°C to a 1 1/2x3 in. plate and was then rolled at 760°C to 0.150 in. thickness and annealed at this temperature for 20 min to produce an equiaxed grain structure of about 0.1 mm average grain diameter. The hot rolled plate was roller-leveled, surface ground to 0.135 in., cold rolled 83 pct reduction in thickness on a two-high mill, and then to a total reduction of 97 pct on a Sendzimir mill. The 0.004 in. strip material so produced received no subsequent mechanical treatment. Specimens % in. square were sheared from the rolled strip and isothermally annealed at 104 mm Hg in an all glass vacuum system equipped with a Vycor furnace tube. The temperature data presented are the average temperatures during the runs and did not vary more than about k3"C. X-ray Diffraction Methods: When zirconium is drastically cold rolled, a high degree of preferred orientation results in which prism poles, {1010}, are perpendicular to the rolling direction. THE development of the extensive Southeast Missouri deposits greatly preceded that of the Iowa and Wisconsin deposits. It began about 1720 at Mine La Motte and other localities, and has continued uninterruptedly to the present time. It is estimated that this district produced about 184,000 tons of lead in the year 1916, having a value of approximately, $25,000,000. This is a new high record. The Southwest Missouri orebodies were hardly known before 1845 and were not extensively developed until 1870: Lead production in South-west Missouri for 1916 was 38,788 tons. Oklahoma produced 14,399 ,tons and Kansas 2,345 tons, making a total for Southwest Missouri, and the adjoining districts in Oklahoma and Kansas, of 55,532 tons of lead. The first metallurgists in Missouri were the Indian and the hunter. The early settler learned to procure his bullets either by melting ore in his camp fire or by throwing pieces of galena on an old stump and depending on the usual roasting and reaction method to obtain the metal. A little more refined method was to arrange two flat stones in the form of a V. Wood and galena were placed in the furnace and ignited. As heat developed, some of the metal was extracted and molded into bullets. The next step in utilizing the lead ores was the log hearth. All lead in Missouri was smelted in this crude affair before 1820. It was built on sloping ground, and consisted of a hearth of stone, surrounded on the front and two sides by a stone wall. The wall was 7 ft. high in front. The top and rear end were left open and in front an arch or opening was made, forming the eye of the furnace. In front of this a pit was dug in the ground, to receive the molten metal. Large logs were rolled in at the back and made to rest upon ledges formed inside, to raise them from the hearth and to give a draft. These logs filled the entire width of the furnace. Small split logs were then set up around the two sides and the front, and the ore was piled on until the furnace was full. Finally, the mass was covered with logs and fuel until the ore was completely surrounded. A gentle heat was started, which was raised very gradually. After 12 hr. the heat was increased and continued for 12 hr. more, 24 hr. being required, for each smelting. The furnace treated about 5,000 lb. per 24 hr. and the ore yielded about 50 per cent. of its metallic lead. A considerable quantity of the ore was not desulphurized, and fell between

INTRODUCTION Ronald G. Stovash General Superintendent Consolidation Coal Company Shoemaker Mine Moundsville, West Virginia Consolidation Coal Company's Shoemaker Mine is located in West Virginia's Northern panhandle near Wheeling, adjacent to the Ohio River. Steam coal is mined from the Pittsburgh #8 seam which averages 65 in. in thickness. The 10 in. of draw rock directly above the coal is taken on advancement, but remains when longwalled. The top consists of up to 12 in. of lower quality coal, and immediately over that, up to 10 ft of multi layered shales, coal, and bone. The cover ranges from 300 to 800 ft of shales and limestone. Two longwalls operate in the mine. The first longwall started in April 1975 and is retreating its eighth panel. This wall was the first to use shield supports in the United States. The second longwall started in September 1979 and is currently retreating its first 7,000 ft panel.

A SEMI-AUTOMATIC hoist has been installed at the 2966 station of the Copper Queen mine, since neither the bulk of supplies handled nor the number of men engaged in developing the 3100 level justifies the constant attendance of two cagers and two hoist operators. The connecting service shaft between the 2966 and 3100 levels is actually a two-compartment raise. Below the 2966 level the shaft is 7x13 ft-slightly oversize to permit downcast ventilation and provide space for the 16-conductor flexible control cable. The raise extends 52 ft above the 2966 level for a 3-ft diam head sheave. Another 3-ft sheave is mounted as an idler between the hoist and head sheave, eliminating the need for an inclined cableway. The main compartment serves as a cageway; the other compartment provides a manway and space for service lines. Since vertical travel is limited, rope speed is of minor importance.
