One complete cycle, allstenite to martensite to aus-tenite, of Martensitic transformation was induced in a commercial 18 Cr-8 Ni stainless steel. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the reverse transfarmation, martensite to austenite, perpetuated the dense defect substructure of the martensite produced by the direct transformation, austenite to 'martensite, and reproduced the retained austenite matrix orientation. A general precipitation of lathlike M,,C, particles was noted to be present in, and is suggested as cause for, regions of martensite that Izad formed after a complete cycle of transformation. The habit plane of the precipitate particles was found to be within 5 a plane previously established as the habit of nitride precipitates of similar morphology in bcc iron. The direct transformation of austenite (y) to martensite (a) in metastable 300 series stainless steels has received considerable attention in the past,'-8 and the martensite product given special emphasis in recent years,9"*u but little information has been published about the reverse martensitic transformation during which bcc a martensite is converted to fcc y austenite."-" The reversal mechanism and the resulting crystallographic relationship between parent and product austenite are of fundamental concern. The reversal product, fully austenitic, and hereafter referred to as reversed austenite, exhibits a defect structure far different from its virgin counterpart. Some studies have been reported in which the structure of reversed austenite in iron nickel alloys is compared to annealed austenite with respect to austenite strengtheningM and Stabilization.' The martensite in these Fe-Ni alloys, however, shows a basic difference from that produced in stainless steels. Structurally, the Fe-Ni martensite is profusely twinned," while the (low-carbon) Fe-Cr-Ni martensite contains a high density of tangled dislocations and is apparently twin-free.I0 reediis" has recently shown in an Fe-16 Cr-12 Ni stainless alloy that this typical martensitic defect structure and the reverse transformation directly influence the structure of the reversal product. He found that much of the reversed austenite had returned to the orientation of the virgin austenite and that fine twins were formed in the austenite after the reverse transformation. This investigation was undertaken in order to describe as completely as possible the structural changes produced by a cycle of transformation in a typical 18-8 stainless steel. Niobium-tin has been prepared on insulating suhstrates hby simultaneous hydrogen reduction of gaseous niobium and tin halides. Stoichiometric material is greater than 98.8pct theoretical density, appears to he single-phase, and has a total impirity level less than 0.3 at. pct. Transition temperatures and lattice constants may he related to composition. Typical current densities in various fields and orientations are given. IT is known that Nb3Sn carries large current densities in high fields, 1 and exhibits an unusually high transition temperature2 and critical field.3 For these reasons high-field solenoids have been constructed of this material.4 Because of the emphasis on solenoid fabrication, much of the materials research has been directed toward development of wire geometries wherein the brittle Nb3Sn is supported by a more malleable metal or alloy. There are, however, basic studies and applications that can be carried out only on Nb3Sn supported by an insulator. Insulating substrates are desirable for a number of reasons: the substrate does not interact with applied or induced currents and fields; diffusion of metallic species into the de- posit is avoided, both during the preparation and during subsequent heat treatment; irradiated samples are not more active than the deposit itself. Unsupported Nb3Sn geometries may also be prepared by preferential chemical dissolution of the insulating substrate. This report describes the preparation and properties of Nb3Sn deposits on ceramic substrates. Experiments currently utilizing material prepared in the manner described in this report include the following: dependence of current-carrying properties on field strength and orientation 5,6 radiation damage,7,8 tunneling,9 thermal conductivity (substrate removed),1° microwave surface impedance," tube magnetization,6,12 resistivity as a function of temperature,13 and current density and transition temperature as a function of annealing.14 Possible practical applications include magnetic shielding, superconductor generators, and frictionless bearings. PREPARATION Methods for the deposition of elemental niobium and tin by hydrogen reduction of the gaseous metal halides have been known for some time,15,18 but only recently a procedure was developed in this laboratory17 for the codeposition of these two metals on a hotwire as the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn. This method of simultaneous hydrogen reduction of the gaseous niobium and tin chlorides is used for the preparation of Nb3Sn On ceramic substrates. The procedure differs from that employed on a hot wire in that insulating substrates cannot conveniently be heated to temperatures greater than their surround-

TRE solubility of hydrogen in molten copper-tin alloys is of both practical and theoretical interest. From a practical standpoint, data on the equilibrium solubility as a function of temperature, pressure and alloy composition are valuable for a better understanding of porosity problems in bronze castings. From the theoretical point of view the determination of the hydrogen-copper-tin equilibrium is of interest since it extends the laws governing the solution of gases in metals. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the solubility of hydrogen in representative compositions of the copper-tin system at temperatures ranging from above the liquidus to 1300°C. and at pressures from less than 50 mm. of mercury to about atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of hydrogen in copper was determined by Sieverts and Krumbhaarl in 1910 and by Roentgen and Moeller2 in 1934. Their values are in fair agreement. In 1926 Iwasé3 reported results that were very much higher. The published data on the solubility of hydrogen in tin do not agree. Smithells4 states that no reliable data are available. According to Sieverts and Krumbhaar,5 hydrogen is insoluble in tin. Bircumshaw,6 on the other hand, found a definite solubility at 800°C. The latter's experimental procedure did not provide for stirring of the metal and in his opinion he failed to reach equilibrium. Iwasé3 again reported large solubility values. For copper alloys, Sieverts and Krumbhaar6 distinguished between alloying elements that do not markedly affect the solubility of hydrogen, elements that increase the solubility, and elements that reduce it. They named gold, tin, and aluminum as examples of this last group and reported hydrogen solubility data at 1225°C. for the copper-rich side of these alloy systems at atmospheric pressure. Without giving experimental results, they stated that the amount of hydrogen dissolved by liquid copper alloys is proportional to the square root of the pressure as in pure metals. These authors suggested that in a limited way the effect of an alloying element on the solubility of a gas is related to the constitution diagram for the alloy system. Sieverts7 also called attention to the fact that the curve of hydrogen solubility versus composition of copper-tin alloys shows a sharp change of direction at the composition of Cu3Sn and suggested that this compound persists at least to some extent in the molten state. Iwas3é reported large hydrogen solubility values for several compositions of copper- tin alloys, which appear to be in error.

While the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,² by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,³ cadmium,³,4 cobalt,4 cop-per,³-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead,³,l2,l³ molybdenum,14 nickel,4,8,9 tin," and zinc³,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. Principle OF the Method The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I. The polarographic method is particularly useful in the range of concentration between those normally determined by spectographic and chemical methods. In

BAUXITE is produced in Arkansas from two mining districts in the central portion of the State. These are (1) the Fourche Mountain district, immediately south and southeast of Little Rock in Pulaski County, and (2) the Bauxite (town) district, about five miles east of Becton in the eastern part of Saline County. These two mining districts are about twelve miles apart, separated by territory which, so far, has produced a negligible amount of commercial ore. Mining was by open-pit methods exclusively until 1924, when underground methods came into use. From 1924 to 1930 about 40 per cent of all of the ore produced in Arkansas was mined by underground methods, mainly by retreating caving.

The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

Within the past nine years a means for measuring the distance between mine roof and floor was developed at the White Pine mine which yields relevant information utilized in the mining operation. The technique known as "convergence" is an efficient, low cost way for obtaining large quantities of data for predicting roof falls, caving activity and overall mine stability. Since 1964 the activity of convergence measurements has expanded to become a production tool found in all sections of the mine. The program involves four types of activity: 1) monthly measurements in areas known to be active and in sample blocks scattered throughout the mine for a long-term stability study; 2) semi- monthly measurements along vital travel roads, belt drifts and compressor sites; 3) weekly measurements in areas where men are working; 4) daily measurements in pillar-recovery and caving operations.

THIS paper is the second of a series on the effect of various elements on hot-working characteristics of Fe-C alloys to be issued by this laboratory. The investigations being conducted at the Ferroalloy Research Branch of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Redding, Calif., involve fundamental research on the effects of various alloying materials and impurities on the physical properties of high purity Fe-C alloys. This paper deals with the determination of the limit of forgeability of steels containing varying amounts of manganese and sulphur. A paper discussing the hot-working characteristics and the physical properties of the forgeable alloys is being prepared. One of the principal impurities in all steels is sulphur.. The phenomenon, hot-shortness, commonly attributed to sulphur, has long been a source of expense and inconvenience to both the maker and user of steels. In steelmaking practice, this effect of sulphur has been overcome by the addition of manganese which, apparently, acts as a desulphurizer. Manganese is also used as a deoxidizer and alloying material. The critical and strategic position of man- ganese gives added importance to research which may contribute to its conservation and more effective utilization. It is not the purpose or intention in the present paper to give any explanation of the mechanism of either hot-shortness or its prevention but rather to report the results of forging high purity Fe-C alloys of the range of compositions near the limit of hot-forgeability. Temperatures for each phase of reduction were duplicated within 20" to 30°F for all tests. The starting material was sponge iron, which, after melting and purification, gave a high purity iron containing about 0.001 pct each of silicon and phosphorus. Scrap iron was not considered suitable because of its high percentage of contaminants and wide variation in analyses. The sponge iron was melted and refined for melting stock in a three-phase, direct-arc, size ST, Moore Rapid Lectromelt furnace with a 500 kva rating as described in the preceding paper. Additives were carefully selected to avoid addition of contaminants. The sulphur was added as resublimed flowers of sulphur or purified roll sulphur of analytical grade. The manganese used was dehydrogenated high purity electrolytic material produced by the Bureau of Mines plant at Boulder City, Nev. High purity aluminum in the form of wire was used for deoxidation. The limestone was obtained locally and had the following analysis: CaO, 53.7 pct; MgO, 0.8; ignition loss, 42.4; R2O3, 0.2; SiO2,3.0; and P2O5, 0.014.

The design of the plant facilities together with the necessary equipment required for the operation is at an optimum only for the specified plant with its peculiar priorities and preferences. Because many alternatives in design are possible to suit a particular plant, each plant designer and contractor must choose carefully in the selection of the site, design and choice of materials of construction, as well as the type of equipment necessary for the process. Basic factors as efficiency, dependability, simplicity, and safety must be considered early in the construction; while the choice of equipment, materials of construction, possible corrosion problems, automation, maintenance, effluents disposal and tailings dam construction can greatly affect the plant costs. While existing plants are in operation, the know-how gained from the operating experience of those plants can be invaluable in the new plant planning, design, and construction.

They came from Paris, Washington and Rabat; two directors, two chief geologists and the president of our own local subsidiary company. Such a meeting was not unprecedented, but it seeemed to us that our president was overzealous in arranging for inspections of each exploration site. One was a problem. Jacques, our president, had concocted the idea that we should lead this learned, mature (not exactly aged) group into the desert to see newly found anomaly. It was in virgin country and had been marked by dropping a flour sack on it from the air.

A large coal-fired power plant is to be built jointly by Pacific Power & Light Co. of Portland, Ore., and by The Washington Water Power Co. of Spokane, Wash., at a site about six miles northeast of Centralia, Wash. (Fig. 1 inset). Coal will be mined from nearby open-pit strip mines that will require cut slopes up to 250 ft in height. Coal will be removed from a seam approximately 50 ft thick, located at the bottom of the mine slopes. The coal fields are located in a geologically complex area that has been subjected to intense folding and faulting. As a result, the soils and rock comprising the overburden are highly fractured, jointed, and faulted. Classical approaches to slope stability based solely on the physical proper- ties of the overburden appeared to offer little assurance that theoretically stable slopes would remain stable. Further, the scope of the exploration program that would be required to provide a reasonable evaluation of the primary and secondary structural features from which a statistical evaluation could be developed was considered impractical. As part of the development of an overall mining plan, an experimental Pilot mine excavation, about 225 ft high and about 400 ft long at the base, was made within the coal field. This experimental cut was to provide firsthand knowledge of cut slope behavior. Our purpose at the Pilot mine was to observe the cut slopes as the excavation proceeded. To accomplish this purpose, the highwall of the experimental cut was instrumented to measure face movements and movement at depth behind the face. In addition, a detailed geologic map of the soil and rock conditions exposed in the highwall was prepared, and continual visual observations of the mine were made, noting significant events as they occurred.

The geological and economic conditions peculiar to the Greater Oficina area are presented to demonstrate the necessity of a low-cost, well-site method of distinguishing gas-bearing formations. The method of gas detection with the neutron log is briefly discussed and its limitations are explained. A new method is described which consists in running a second neutron log with a larger source-to-detector spacing. Field data indicate that under favorable conditions the larger spacing response is proportionately more influenced by the virgin gas zone than is the shorter spacing response. One important condition is that the gas sands be invaded, with a diameter of invasion equal to about two to three times the hole diameter. The calibration of the longer spacing log is made so that the two logs read the same deflection in shale and in a known water or oil sand. Under such conditions, gas is indicated by a positive separation, i.e., the curve for the longer device is displaced to the right of the curve for the shorter device. Because of the non-linearity of the long spacing response, low porosity formations also show positive separations. In sands with large porosity variations, the gas sands can no longer he located visually. They can be detected on a plot of shorter spacing vs longer spac-ing deflections. INTRODUCTION In the Greater Oficina area of Eastern Venezuela, the rapid and accurate detection of gas from well logs is of primary importance because of a combination of economic, geologic, and operational conditions. Briefly, these conditions are: economic—there is no market for gas at the present time; geologic—a single well may contain as many as 30 or more oil or gas sands for which intervals -to be tested must be selected; opera-tional—first, once opened to the casing through perforations, gas sands are extremely difficult and expensive to squeeze off, and second, gas detection must be rapid because the geologist must decide immediately, at the well, which sand to perforate. During the early period of exploitation in Greater Ofi-cina, when clay base muds were used, sidewall samples, together with electric logs, gave fairly good distinction between oil and gas sands. When exploitation became concentrated on deep fields of poorer sidewall sample recovery, and after the advent of oil emulsion muds, now the standard drilling fluid in Greater Oficina, the regular neutron log became the most reliable indicator of gas. In 1953, R. Norelius devised the dual-spacing neutron technique for gas detection. The dual-spacing neutron log has proved to be highly successful in detecting gas and has been adopted as a regular survey by all of the oil companies of the area. Several hundred dual-spacing neutron logs have been run in Eastern Venezuela and several tests per well are available for positive evaluation of the logs. The findings outlined below are based upon this extensive field experience. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THE GREATER OFICINA AREA The Greater Oficina area lies on the south flank of the Eastern Venezuela Basin (Fig. 1). Nearly all accumulations of oil and gas in the area are trapped, in whole or in part, against normal faults. All known oil and gas reservoirs in Greater Oficina occur in the Ofi-cina formation (Miocene-Oligocene) or in the "U" sands. The U sands are the lithologic equivalent of the Merecure group (Otigocene-Eocene), which contains oil in many fields north of Greater Oficina. Most of the petroleum produced in Eastern Venezuela is from the Oficina formation.

The van Arkel-deBoer method for producing ductile titanium by thermal decomposition of Til, vapor and deposition on an electrically heated filament is modified by film boiling Til liquid on a heated filament, resulting in similar titanium deposition on the filament and liberation of gaseous iodine. The deposition rate is higher and the energy requirement smaller than in the van Arkel process. Many problems must be solved before the process is commercially feasible. TITANIUM of 99.9 pct purity, called ductile titanium, has been produced by a modification of the van Arkel-deBoer&apos; method. In the van Arkel-deBoer method, an electrically heated wire is suspended from two electrodes, which are placed in a container holding TiI, vapor at a low&apos; vapor pressure (usually <5 mm Hg). The vapor diffuses to the hot wire, usually maintained at 1100" to 1600°C,&apos; and decomposes according to the reaction liberating gaseous atomic iodine and depositing solid crystalline titanium on the wire. Estimations based on the data of Runnalls and Pidgeon,&apos; indicate that the rate-control ling step is the diffusion of atomic iodine away from the wire. There appears to be nearly thermodynamic equilibrium at the wire with TiI, and iodine as the main gaseous species. TiI, is almost certainly an important gaseous species in the cooler regions.&apos; The liberated iodine diffuses to a heated source of crude titanium and reacts to form more TiI, vapor, which again diffuses to the hot wire and completes the cyclic process. The foregoing process may be modified by suspending the hot wire in liquid TiI,, instead of the vapor, and obtaining film boiling. This type of boiling is characterized by the formation of a continuous film of vapor over the wire surface. Since only vapor contacts the wire sul.face, the temperature of this surface may be raised as high as desirable, within the limit of mechanical strength requirements for the wire. By properly adjusting the input voltage. the temperature of the wire may be maintained above U0C"C; and by evacuating the vessel holding the liquid TiI, and maintaining a suitable condenser temperature, the vapor pressure of TiI, may be held low. Thus, the conditions of operation of the van Arkel-deBoer method may be approximated with film boiling; and hence, it is postulated that ductile titanium may be produced by this method. Preparation of Til, There are many methods available for the preparation of TiI,; that used in this research was prepared by the direct reaction of titanium sponge in controlled amounts with liquid iodine. Although no difficulty was encountered with this reaction, it has since been pointed out that this method is sometimes dangerous and should be used with caution. The resulting TiI, was purified by distillation. First Film Boiling Experiments Apparatus: The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was used for film boiling TiI, on short wire filaments. The current to the filament was supplied through a bank of three 5 kva transformers connected in parallel. The current was controlled by adjusting the voltage over a 0 to 67.5 v range with a 7 kva variable transformer on the low voltage side of the bank of transformers. The current and voltage were measured by Weston meters. The sealed-in-glass tungsten electrodes were hard-soldered to the filament for the film boiling of TiI,. The bottom part of the reactor, containing TiI,, was wrapped with ni-chrome heating wires to maintain the TiI, in the liquid state. An ice or liquid nitrogen trap, for solidifying I, vapor and any TiI, not condensed, was attached to the low pressure side of the air-cooled condenser. A Megavac vacuum pump was used. Procedure: A 0.010 in. diam tungsten filament was hard-soldered to the tungsten electrodes. TiI, was melted (mp 156°C) and poured into the reactor chamber; the top of the reactor chamber, containing the electrodes, was replaced. Freezing of the TiI, was prevented by controlling the current to the ni-chrome wires wrapped around the reactor with a 1 kva variable transformer. The mechanical vacuum pump was started and the system evacuated to about 2 mm Hg TiI, vapor pressure. FERGUS County, Mont., shown in Fig. 1, is known for its once famous gold mines near the old towns of Gilt Edge, Maiden, and Kendall. But at Heath, a small farming community near the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, thousands of tons of gypsum have been mined since 1916. The value of the gold taken from the mines of Fergus County runs into millions of dollars; the value of the products made from the gypsum of the Heath mine is also in the millions. The gypsum mine will continue to produce for many years, while the gold mines are closed today. The Heath gypsum mine was developed by the Northwest Gypsum Co. in 1916. The products of the small mill built by this company were plaster, agricultural gypsum, and raw gypsum for cement manufacturing. The United States Gypsum Co. prospected the adjacent property in 1916 and 1917 by means of two adits and some exploration drill holes. During World War I, the company abandoned operations at Heath, but again became active in this area in 1928 hen it purchased all the property of the Northwest Gypsum Co. A long range program of expansion was begun with the building of a block plant and the purchase of additional land and mineral rights. A modern wall board plant was built in 1936. When the old wooden mill purchased from the Northwest Gypsum Co. burned in 1937, an all-metal calcining plant located at Blue Rapids, Kansas, was dismantled, moved to Heath, and erected on the site of the mill. In August 1951 a new mine was opened 3000 ft north of the mill. Rock is conveyed from the mine to the mill by an 18-in. belt conveyor. The Heath gypsum deposit lies at the base of the Ellis formation of Jurassic Age. The Ellis at Heath lies unconformably on the black fissle shale of the Heath formation of the Big Snowy Group, which is Mississippian in age. The strike of the gypsum bed is N45°E and the dip approximately 3" NW; the regional strike and dip of the area. The gypsum lies in a series of six layers separated from each other by thin seams of shale. The lower layer is composed of&apos; gypsum and shale intermingled and is not of commercial grade. The upper five layers are high in purity, but only the middle four layers are mined on the advance, as the top layer is left for roof support. This top layer is mined on retreating operations at the same time the pillars are robbed. Total thickness of the gypsum layers varies from 12 to 14 ft. Fig. 2 shows the average thickness and arrangement of the layers. Mining Methods The mine was originally developed by driving an adit into the gypsum horizon. The Northwest Gypsum Co. mined in the top four layers, the top layer being split, leaving about 12 in. for roof support. A modified room and pillar method was used: entries were 15 ft wide and rooms varied between 20 and 30 ft and were turned on 90" from the entries. Crosscuts between the rooms left pillars from 10 to 20 ft square. The rock was loaded by hand into 1-ton mine cars and pulled to a central gathering point by mules; from the gathering point, mules or horses were used to pull the string of cars to the mill tipple. This method was continued by the United States Gypsum Co. from 1928 to 1937.

Of the many opportunities in the mining industry to invest funds to improve operations, there is always some limit in every company as to how much can be spent each year for the acquisition of capital assets. Generally, there are many more opportunities for investment than funds to make the investments. As such, one of management&apos;s goals is to select the most profitable of all the opportunities available. Each opportunity must be carefully analyzed for its potential percentage rate of return. This percentage return or return on investment concept is an accepted financial yardstick of business profit- ability. For today&apos;s mining engineers, this problem resolves itself in the job of determining how to in- vest most productively the cash that is flowing from their operations so that it will multiply in value. There are four basic types of capital investments: Strategic investments, such as selecting a plant site, are those that affect virtually all long-run plans of a company. Change in a company&apos;s product line and expansion of company facilities are two other types of capital investments.

The existence of phosphate of lime within the State of Florida has been known for over a decade; but until the spring of 1887, the extent and value of its deposit.;, possibly with one exception, were unsuspected. In that year Col. T. S. Moorehead, induced by a statement made by Mr. J. F. Le Baron, examined the gravels of the Peace river, recognized the importance of the deposits, acquired such tracts as were regarded as desirable, and established the pebble-phosphate industry, making his first shipment in May, 1888, to the Scott Manufacturing Company, of Atlanta, Ga. The establishment of the pebble-phosphate industry upon Peace river was followed, a year later, by the discovery in Marion county of an entirely different class of phosphate, now commonly known as hard-rock phosphate. This discovery was made early in June, 1889, by Mr. Albertus Voght, in a well which he was sinking upon his place near the site of the present town of Donnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala. To it, more than to any other cause, is due the rapid and remarkable development of the present great industry of the State. It was, however, Mr. John F. Dunn, of Ocala, who turned to advantage the accidental discovery of Mr. Voght. After acquiring a knowledge as to the chemical composition and value of the material, Mr. Dunn and hid associates purchased several thousand acres of land and organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company for active operations. From Dunnellon as a center, prospecting rapidly extended in all directions, until at the present day important mines have been opened over a well-defined tract more than 200 miles long and about 6 miles wide. DESCRIPTION. ACCORDING to the estimates prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey, the area underlain by workable coal-beds in the United States is 496,776 sq. miles. Of this total area, 480 sq. miles contain the entire anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania. The bituminous coal-fields are estimated to be contained in areas aggregating 250,051 sq. miles. The grade of coal between bituminous and lignite, and which is designated by the Geological Survey as " sub-bituminous," is estimated to be contained within areas aggregating 97,636 sq. miles, while the areas containing lignite aggregate 148,609 sq. miles. The coal-fields are divided, for the sake of convenience in classification, into six main provinces, as follows: 1. The Eastern. Province, containing the anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania and the bituminous coal-fields of the Appalachian region-namely, those of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and small outlying areas in North Carolina. 2. The Interior .Province, containing the bituminous coal-producing regions of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, western Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. 3. The Gulf Province, containing the lignite-areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. 4. The Northern or Great Plains Province, containing the lignite and sub-bituminous areas of North and South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. 5. The Rocky Mountain Province, containing the bituminous and sub-bituminous areas of western Montana and western Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. 6. The Pacific Coast Province, containing-the areas of Washington, Oregon, and California.

The iilzfluence of catalytic agents on the oxidation of ZnS has been studied under pressure leaching conditions, using a chemically prepared sample of ZnS which was substantially unreactive on heating at 113°C with dilute sulfuric acid and 250 psi oxygen. Nurnerous prospective catalysts were added at the ratio of 0.024 mole per mole ZnS in the above reaction but pvonounced catalytic activity was confined to copper, bismuth, rutheniuwl, molybdenum, and iron in order of. decreasing effectiveness. In the absence of acid, where sulfate was the sole product of oxidation, catalysis was exhibited by copper and ruthenium only. Parameters affecting the oxidation rate were catalyst concentration, temperature, time, oxygen pressure, and a7riount of acid, the first two being most important. The main product of oxidation in the acid reaction was sulfur, with trinor amounts of sulfate. An electrochemical (galvanic) mechanism has been suggested for the sulfuv-forming reaction, whereby the relatively inert ZnS is "activated" by incorporation of catalyst ions in the lattice and the same catalysts subsequently accelerate the reduction of dissolved oxygen at cathodic sites on the ZnS surface. Insufficient data was obtained to Provide a detailed mechanism for sulfate fornzation, which is favored at low acidities and probably proceeds th&apos;rough intermediate transient species not identified in the preseni work. THE oxidation of zinc sulfide at elevated temperatures and pressures takes place according to the following simplified reactions: ZnS + io2 + H2SO4 — ZnSO4 + SG + HsO [i] ZnS + 20,-ZSO [21 In dilute acid both reactions occur but Reaction [I] is usually predominant, whereas in the absence of acid only Reaction [2] can be observed. Both proceed very slowly with chemically pure zinc sulfide but can be greatly accelerated by the addition of suitable catalysts, as suggested by jorling&apos; in 1954. Nevertheless, an initial success in the pressure leaching of zinc concentrates was achieved by Forward and veltman2 without any deliberate addition of catalytic agents and it was only later that the catalytic role of iron, present in concentrates both as (ZnFe)S and as impurities, was recognized and eventually patented.3 It is now apparent that another catalyst, uiz., copper, may have also played a part in the successful extraction of zinc, since copper sulfate is almost universally used as an activator in the flotation of sphalerite and can be adsorbed on the mineral surface in sufficient amount The importance of catalysis in oxidation-reduction reactions such as those cited above has been emphasized by various writers and Halpern4 sums up the situation when he writes that "there is good reason to believe that such ions (e.g., Cu) may exert an important catalytic influence on the various homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions which occur during leaching, particularly of sulfides, thus affecting not only the leaching rates but also the nature of the final products." Nevertheless relatively little work has appeared on this topic, one of the main reasons being that sufficiently pure samples of sulfide minerals are difficult to prepare or obtain. When it is realized that 1 part Cu in 2000 parts of ZnS is sufficient to exert a pronounced catalytic effect, the magnitude of the purity problem is evident. An incentive to undertake the present work was that an adequate supply of "pure" zinc sulfide became available. When preliminary tests established that the material, despite its large surface area, was substantially unreactive under pressure leaching conditions, the inference was made that it was sufficiently free from catalytic impurities to be suitable for studies in which known amounts of potential catalytic agents could be added. The first objective in the following work was to identify those ions or compounds which accelerate the reaction rate and, for practical reasons, to determine the effects of parameters such as amgunt of catalyst, temperature, time, acid concentration, and oxygen pressure. The second and ultimately the more important objective was to make use of the experimental results to further our knowledge of the reaction mechanisms occurring under pressure leaching conditions. The fact that catalysts can dramatically increase the reaction rate suggests that physical factors such as absorption of gaseous oxygen, transport of reactants and products, and so forth, are not of major importance under the experimental conditions employed and an opportunity is thereby provided to concentrate on the heterogeneous reaction on the surface of the sulfide particles. As will appear in the sequel, the first of these objectives has been achieved in a semiquantitative fashion but a great deal still remains to be clarified in the field of reaction mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL a) Materials. The white zinc sulfide used was a chemically prepared "Laboratory Reagent" material (B.D.H.) and X-ray diffraction tests showed it to contain both sphalerite and wurtzite. The specific surface area, measured by argon absorption at 77"K, varied between 3.9 and 4.6 sq m per g. Analysis gave 65.0 pct Zn (67.1 pct theory) and 31.9 pct S (32.9 pct theory).
