Ore from the Hill 50 Gold Mine, consists essentially of pyrrhotite, with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and gold, replacing "jaspilite." The gold is associated with the sulphides as shotty particles. About 8 per cent. of the particles are less than '0.010'mm.The Hill 50 Gold Mine, at Boogardie in the Murchison goldfield, about 300 miles north-west of Kalgoorlie, was first operated in 1898. From 1898 to 1917 it yielded 20,000 short tons of ore for a recovery of 6,225' fine oz. gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 6.22 dwt. gold per ton.The present company since the beginning of its operations in September 1936 to June 30, 1954, produced 811,081 short tons of ore for a recovery of 242,554 fine oz. of gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 5.98 dwt. gold per ton.The grade of ore (recovery grade) has shown a remarkable variation with depth. From the 120 ft. Ievel to the 300 ft. level, it averaged about 7.5 dwt. Au per ton. Below the 300 ft. level it declined, and from 300 ft. to 400 ft. averaged 4.9 dwt. per ton, falling further with increasing depth to about 4.5 dwt. per ton at the '600 ft. level.On the 820 ft. level the grade improved sharply to about 14 dwt: per ton, and this grade has persisted down to and on the 1060 ft. level.The orebody has been described by Finucane (1953) as a series of lenses of finely banded jaspilite conformably enclosed by greenstones. The jaspilite is tightly folded and faulted and intruded by dykes of felspar porpnyry.Mineralization is practically restricted to the jaspilite.

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

Central Appalachian coal reserves are a valuable natural resource in high demand, both domestically and internationally, justifying efforts to increase percentage recovery through pillaring. Unfortunately, the challenge associated with pillar extraction introduces additional safety risks during the activity. Although pillaring developed prior to mechanized mining, current technology and mining practices have made this form of mining highly modernized. However, current fatality trends suggest that work still needs to be done to control the residual risk that is not controlled by modern practices, such as those having a personnel-performance-based component. This paper investigates the application of modern coal pillaring techniques and will present a risk-management-based strategy that targets personnel-performance-based risk, in order to improve the ability of safety engineers, managers and trainers to provide training programs addressing the needs of pillaring sections.

Nos últimos anos, esse interesse tem se tornado realidade, tendo sido adquiridas edificações construídas com sistema Light Steel Framing e outras estruturadas em perfis laminados. Além de impulsionar o consumo do aço, essas unidades apresentaram diversas vantagens em relação à construção em concreto armado, como: redução no custo de implantação, melhor controle do cronograma de execução, abatimento no prazo para execução dos serviços e menor exposição dos trabalhadores aos riscos operacionais, já que apenas as interligações das utilidades foram executadas no local. As primeiras unidades adquiridas tem apresentado excelente desempenho ao longo do tempo, mesmo considerando o ambiente industrial e marinho ao qual a planta da ArcelorMittal Tubarão está submetida.

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest cost in underground mining operations. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of belt conveyors, a common practice in coal and similar soft miner ii mines. This is particularly true if oversize ore and rock can he eliminated prior to conveying; thus producing a demand for crushers near the production areas. Portable feeder-breakers are extensively used in conveyorized mines, but no suitable, equivalent equipment, is available to provide these benefits to hard rock mines of low to medium headroom. A hard rock crusher capable of easy movement and readily disassembled would allow use to belt conveyors and could improve the general safety and productivity of any underground ore hauling system. This report summarizes proposals and findings made in conjunction with the newly designed M-44 Low Head Portable Crusher which is believed well capable of meeting the requirements of a "portable, underground, hard rock" machine as previously defined in earlier reports. Data gathered by use of the 1/4 Scale Model of the M-44 has substantiated and verified the concept sufficiently to justify construction of a full-size machine for further testing under actual mine conditions.

"ADVANCE planning of mining methods, from the first development openings to stope layout and pillar recovery, has long been accepted as a normal method of operating a mine. Recently, mine managers have become increasingly aware that advance planning of cost and accounting controls can also be considered a normal method of operation. The use of such controls is wide-spread in manufacturing industries. In mining, the gold mines of South Africa have pioneered, with marked success, in this field and have been closely associated with most of the research and field work in accounting control. Canadian mine managers are also beginning to realize the advantages of using planned costs. The control procedures which subsequently have been introduced at various mines have come to be known by such names as ""Responsibility Costing"" or Budgetary Control"".Budgetary control, the term used in this paper, is based on the concept of decentralized authority with centralized control. ;The control is achieved by measuring results against yardsticks which are in the form of budgets or standards. Bud-gets are made for the future activities of each possible operation as planned by the department head, and attention is directed to variations from this plan. Furthermore, the control process charges to each operation only those costs which are incurred directly for that operation, and which can be controlled by the person in charge. Thus, budgetary control relates results to the officials responsible for those results. Expenditures are analyzed according to the organizational structure of the mine and the people who run it, and not according to production processes."

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Along with gravity separation and froth flotation, magnetic separation is one of the most common techniques for separating minerals. Minerals are separated by a magnetic force that is dependent on a combination of the applied magnetic field, the magnetic field gradient and the magnetic properties of the minerals themselves. Minerals may be classified as diamagnetic, paramagnetic or ferromagnetic based on the way they interact in a magnetic field. The magnetic susceptibility of a material may be determined by using a vibrating sample magnetometer to determine the magnetic moment of the material in an applied magnetic field and then converting this measured moment into the material?s magnetic susceptibility. In the case of rare earth minerals, magnetic separation is commonly used to remove ferromagnetic iron-bearing gangue minerals and to concentrate paramagnetic valuable minerals such as monazite and xenotime. These magnetic separation steps are frequently preceded by a gravity separation step as many iron oxides and rare earth minerals have specific gravities that are much larger than those of typical gangue minerals. By varying the magnetic field intensity it may be possible to use magnetic separation to selectively separate the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic minerals that report to the concentrate after gravity separation. Test work on a Canadian rare earth ore has shown that a gravity concentration step using a Knelson concentrator was able to selectively concentrate heavy magnetic minerals as evidenced by increased recoveries, relative to the Knelson tailings and fresh feed, after processing through a wet variable intensity magnetic separator. Mass pull to the Knelson concentrate was 4.5 % and the magnetic recovery of this concentrate, at 0.94 T, was approximately 40 % higher than the magnetic recovery from the Knelson tailings (70 % versus 30 %). The products of the wet high intensity magnetic separation were also analysed using a vibrating sample magnetometer to determine the magnetic susceptibilities of the various concentrate and tailings products.

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast.

Roof and rib falls are the basic ground control hazards associated with underground roadways during development, stand up and, if applicable, retreat. Falls of ground can happen following the deterioration of supports or rock conditions over time, and particularly as a consequence of continuing rock deformation and/ or failure to install adequate support. Once developed, the risk of a failure is increased due to the effects of time as well as to front abutment stresses through retreat mining. The measurement of strata displacement using monitoring equipment is a form of ground control risk assessment. These monitoring systems are active, or ?live?, in a sense that risk is assessed real-time. However, there are circumstances in which falls of ground can occur without the prior recording of excessive movement. In addition, monitoring equipment is typically placed at set intervals, and strata conditions could vary between these points. Consequently, a visual assessment of other factors contributing to the risk of a fall should be made in order to complete a ground control risk assessment. Such surveys are usually one-off, thus capturing roadway conditions at one particular point in time. Ongoing deterioration is not documented through such one-time surveys, and there is a requirement for real-time or live assessment where a system is in place so that observation data can be updated on an ongoing basis, and a useful summary of prevailing roadway states produced on demand. To address the shortfalls of one-time assessments, a ?live? computerbased quantitative ground control risk assessment process has been developed. It combines visual observations processed in a quantitative manner with existing monitoring data into an interpretable output which indicates zones of roadway where there is an increased risk of a fall of ground from the roof or sides, so that remedial action can be carried out to mitigate that risk. Through improved procedures, it is now possible to generate a ground control risk assessment for each roadway, and one which can be updated frequently. This paper aims to outline and describe the assessment process.

In the present paper, microstructure changes of solid-state reduction of industrial chromite pellets and lumpy ore were investigated with SEM/EPMA. To simulate the reactions in the packed bed zone of the Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF), carbon monoxide was used as the reducing agent, with the presence of graphite in proximity to chromite. The experiments were carried out at 1500 °C. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe and analyse the structure and composition changes of the chromite samples. It was found that reduction of lumpy ore generally took place slower than that of pellet. In all samples, chromite reduction proceeded faster in the outer part of the sample than in the centre part. The reaction mechanism is discussed on the basis of experimental results and earlier investigations. The possibilities to optimize the FeCr production process are also discussed.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solutions and the recovery of gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption method. Mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations are described. Also presented are recent process advances developed by the Bureau, including the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon, and (2) Na2S precipitation of the silver from geld-silver cyanide solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious-metal adsorption from heap leach effluents and for the production of low-silver bullion from activated carbon stripping solutions.

Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) is a prominent activity in the extractive industry: considering only gold, it produces about 20% of world market supply. Despite this fact, ASM is generally associated with negative aspects of its environmental impact, and operational research is generally neglected. This paper emphasizes the peculiarity of the drilling and blasting systems of small underground mines in selected South American Countries. Such Countries, while having large mineral deposits and well recognized large-scale mining activities, at the same time still present on their territory ASM activities that are archaic, highly inefficient and dangerous for the safety of its operators. This paper documents drilling and blasting activities from gold mining in Ecuador and Chile. First, are described the outdated and often non-rational techniques employed by miners, to provide a general framework of the current methods. Then, it is shown what can be improved and how the current methods can be modified. Finally, are shown some field applications and the comparisons of the results obtained. One case shows how blast pull efficiency can be increased of from 82% to 98% by changing non-rational applications of explosive products. Another case shows how, by rationalizing blast designs, drilling and blasting costs can be reduced by 9% per month, the advance by blasting increased by 29% and the blasting efficiency increased from 70% to 90%. Finally, it is concluded that examples of application show how operational improvements are easily applicable on the field, relying only on tools and resources of artisanal mining, but combining solid engineering bases with confidence-gain and respect for the experience of the miners.

This bulletin deals with a topic that is exceedingly wide, and will doubtl~ be under consideration and discussion so long as there are enough known deposits of oil and gas remaining in the earth to make their revelopment profitable. The Bureau of Mines has repeatedly called attention to the importance of protecting oil or gas sands from the encroachment of water, and the purpose of this paper is to summarize existing knowledge of methods and devices. Water may gain access to an oil-bearing formation from several sources-from water sands above or below those. containing the oil, or by encroaching through the oil sands as the oil is withdrawn. In short, it may enter a well from the "top, bottom, or side." Such ingress of water is a most serious detriment to the recovery of oil from the ground. As the art of drilling and developing oil properties has progressed, increasing thought, labor, and money have been expended on various methods, devices, and equipment for arresting the migration of water from its normal subsurface position into the porous strata containing valuable oil or gas accumulations. At an early stage in the oil-field development of California, it became evident that considerable modification of accepted drilling practices was necessary in order to meet the conditions imposed by the poorly consolidated shale, clay, sand, and bowlder beds penetrated, as well as the hard layers of sandstone and calcareous shale, which vary greatly in thickness, hardness, and frequency. These hard streaks are commonly called " shell," and are so reported in the well logs. As deeper and deeper territory was prospected, drillers from the older fields of the Ea,st, as well as from Texas and Louisiana fields, took part in the operations. Xhe practice evolved was thus based on the wide experience of a most cosmopolitan group of men who, considered as a group, were not hampered by being limited to the knowledge of the practice at any one locality.

The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels.
