The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites . The process consists of four mmaajjoorr steps : ( 1 ) reduction roast , ( 2 ) ammoniacal leach , ( 3 ) solvent extraction , and ( 4 ) electrowinning . Several solid - liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall process . In this study , two techniques for solid - liquid separation , centrifugation and thickening , were investigated . This report presents the results of ( 1 ) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and ( 2 ) an economic study of the two techniques , based on the requirements of a commercial - size ( 5,000 - tpd ) laterite processing plant . Sizing and other equipment - related recommendations , based on data from the Bureau's studies , were obtained from commercial manufacturers . The costs of thickening and centrifugation , including all the unit operations affected , were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group . The total operating costs for separation using the two techniques ( including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment ) were found to be quite close : $ 17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $ 18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening . For centrifugal separation , the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment ; using thickeners , the greatest cost was for reagent recovery .

Neste trabalho, foram sintetizados e caracterizados nanofios de prata que posteriormente foram usados para produção de uma tinta condutora cuja, caracterização elétrica foi medida através de valores de tensão versus corrente. A primeira fase do trabalho consiste na obtenção dos nanofios pelo método poliol. Nesta fase, fez-se uma análise da estrutura dos fios, com o objetivo de verificar a uniformidade (forma e tamanho). Para estudos da estrutura utilizou-se a microscopia ótica (MO) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Também utilizou-se a espectroscopia de Ultravioleta-Visível (Uv-Vis) para identificação dos nanofios no produto obtido. A segunda fase, consiste no desenvolvimento da tinta condutora, onde nanofios foram redispersados em uma mistura de solventes e CTAB em banho de ultrassom, para obtenção de valores de tensão superficial e viscosidade. Por fim, medidas de corrente contínua da tinta, permitiram a construção da curva tensão versus corrente, da qual se obteve o valor da resistência elétrica. Através da curva foi possível comprovar o caráter condutor da tinta e pela linearidade da curva, verificou-se que a tinta produzida é considerada um material ôhmico.

Vast improvement in methods of design and analysis of the long- term stability of overburden above room and pillar mines is needed. Improved methods are vital for planning and land development and for prediction above existing, presently stable, room and pillar mines. As shown on the flow chart in [Figure 1], the assessment of the long-term stability is an integral part of the site investigation process regarding mitigation of surface damage effects. In Illinois, flat farmlands with subjacent coal reserves cover vast areas. In some of these areas high extraction of the underlying coal layer(s) may not be possible since the resulting surf ace subsidence combined with a pre-existing shallow water table would make the land too wet. Thus recovery of this coal might only be accomplished by room and pillar mining where the ground surface does not subside and the hydraulics of the overburden are not significantly affected.

"Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. Equations for three-phase, three-dimensional, compressible flow (including capillarity) are reduced to two-dimensional relations by a partial integration. This reduction allows three-dimensional flow problems to be treated with mathematics for only two spatial dimensions. The results can be used to formulate flow equations for two-dimensional reservoir simulators in which the effects of capillarity and fluid segregation in the third dimension are represented. Such reservoir simulators would retain many of the aduantages of two-dimensional simulators while simulating three-dimensional effects. The principal restriction of the method is that the thickness of the reservoir should be small, compared to the distance across the reservoir. INTRODUCTION In recent years, computers have been used to calculate the performances of many reservoirs. Most of the detailed calculations, however, are based on finite difference solutions of the flow equations, and present day computers are seldom able to handle a sufficient number of cells to produce entirely satisfactory solutions, even for reservoirs represented by two-dimensional arrays of cells. The situation becomes much worse when one wishes to approximate the reservoir by a three-dimensional array. A great saving in computation or a more detailed solution can be obtained for many reservoirs by using the partial integration of the equations of flow presented in this paper. The integration reduces the three-dimensional equations to two-dimensional relations; and, for studies of two-dimensional flows in vertical cross-sections, the equations are reduced to one-dimensional relations. Most reservoir performance calculations currently are based on one- or two-dimensional flow re1ations.l-3 In some cases flow in the third dimension is approximated by assuming a particular type of vertical saturation distribution, such as gravity segregation.l.2. The relations developed in this paper approach those for segregated flow as the capillary pressures approach zero, and they approach those for uniformly distributed saturations as the capillary pressures are increased. For this analysis, the ratio of the reservoir's thickness to the maximum distance across it must be small. The capillary pressures between the oil and water should also be small compared to the maximum pressure difference in the reservoir. This requirement is met by most reservoirs. It is assumed that the capillary-pressure curves are well defined, whether or not hysteresis effects are included. Also, the reservoir must have sufficient vertical permeability to allow the fluids to segregate. The results presented here provide a firm theoretical foundation to Coats' et aL5 assumption of vertical equilibrium and extend the relations to three-phase flow. Coats' assumption of vertical equilibrium, which he verified by calculations and experiment, is developed here mathematically from basic flow equations. DISCUSSION SATURATION AND PRESSURE DISTRIBUTIONS Appendix A presents a mathematical analysis of fluid flow in reservoirs where the ratio of thickness to maximum distance across the reservoir is small. The results indicate: (1) that the fluids along any line perpendicular to such a reservoir's upper surface are in static capillary equilibrium (vertical equilibrium); (2) that, to a first approximation, the fluid pressures and properties are functions of only areal position in the reservoir and time; and (3) that hydrostatic pressure gradients exist along any line perpendicular to the reservoir's upper surface. The results might be expected after studying several physical considerations. First, no flow is allowed normal to the upper and lower reservoir boundaries, which are relatively close together.

Personnel of Mexicana de Cobre, a subsidiary of Southern Copper located in Nacozari, Sonora Mexico have been working in the past few years on the development of a process to treat and manage, in an environmentally accepted practice, the residues and effluents generated during the process. To date, this team has been reviewing existing technologies and also has explored new alternatives. At the end of this phase, a novel, efficient and complete process has been configured which will be able to treat some solid and liquid streams such as Teniente converter dust, Peirce Smith converter dust, a Sb-rich precious metals slag, copper refinery electrolyte bleed, acid plant blowdown and an acid bleed of the precious metals plant. The process will consist of a leaching stage, followed by a very selective copper precipitation using novel technology which has been named as back reactions. After copper precipitation, impurities (As, Sb and Bi) will be precipitated mainly as arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) using H2S(g) which will be generated by means of a new process developed in our company. At the end of the process, small volumes of arsenic trisulfide will be vitrified and then disposed as a stable residue.

Recovery of fine mica from a sample of impounded tailing from the Dixie Mines, Inc., crushing and screening operations, Heflin, Ala., was investigated to determine if plant losses of mica could be reduced while econmically producing a commercially acceptable mica concentrate. Conventional wet-tabling and agglomerate-tabling methods yielded concentrates assaying about 95 percent mica from the tailing that contained 17 percent mica. Products containing about 98 percent mica and accounting for mica recoveries of 86 percent were obtained by flotation, using as reagents sulfuric acid, kerosene, and coco amine acetate (a mixture consisting chiefly of dodecyl and tetradecyl amine acetates). The results of the batch flotation tests were verified by tests in a small continuous flotation pilot plant.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, it series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have ,been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school ; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-products-all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. Highwall mining, which is a relatively new mining method, is a preferred and often the only feasible method for extracting coal reserve left by surface mining operations in areas with steep terrain and in closely spaced thin coal seams. Though its safety record is comparable to that of surface mining, failures of mine structures in highwall mines, especially the highwall, have occurred. Methods for the systematic designing of highwall mines to meet the safety and operational challenges are still evolving. This paper presents the results of research into improving the existing design methods and developing new ones for highwall mining operations. The design methodology is aimed at ensuring structural stability of the highwall, roof, web and barrier pillars and preventing subsidence. It takes into consideration the major ground control challenges of soft and layered mine roofs, and interactions from mining closely spaced coal seams. An optimization design process applying a pressure arch concept can be incorporated to improve the recovery rate of coal reserve. A computer program based on the design methodology was developed.

The effectiveness of two synthesized ionic liquids, 1-(benzyloxy)-1-oxopropan-2-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1-BOPAMS) and 4-(benzyloxy)-4-oxobutan-1-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-BOBAMS), were evaluated for mild steel corrosion inhibition in 1.0 M hydro-chloric acid solution, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and gravimetric techniques. Organic moieties responsible for the adsorption process on mild steel surface were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Gravimetric analysis revealed that the inhibition efficiency of 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS increased with concentration, with maximum inhibition values of 90.32% and 97.91%, respectively, at the highest concentration of the inhibitors. Gibbs free energy (ΔG°ads) values indicated a strong interaction between the mild steel surface and the molecules of the ionic liquids, and that the adsorption process was spontaneous. These values also show that the inhibitive nature of ionic liquids against mild steel corrosion is caused by a mixedtype of adsorption film formed on the steel surface. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to describe the adsorption of ionic liquid molecules onto the mild steel surface. Polarization curves showed that 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS have a similar effect on both the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, indicating that they prevent the dissolution of mild steel through both physical and chemical process. Nyquist plots were defined by incomplete semicircle capacitive loops, showing that the charge transfer mechanism controls the corrosion of mild steel in acidic solution.

A reliable laboratory method to characterize the response of free gold particles to flash flotation conditions has been developed. The test has been performed on free milling gold ores as well as synthetic ores, using either a gravity concentrate or gold powder as the gold source, to assess the floatability of gold particles. Trends in free gold flotation kinetics, as well as size and milling effects, were identified for gold recovery based on the different feed types, reagent dosages, and residence times. It was shown that the ultimate recoveries and kinetic trends of gold particles from the gravity concentrate could be enhanced with increased dosage of collector, potassium amyl xanthate. Interestingly, in comparison to gravity-recoverable gold, recovery from pure Au powders was better in collectorless flotation, and cumulative recovery decreased with higher levels of collector addition. Improved coarse particle recovery appeared linked to increased collector additions for both the gravity concentrate and the pure gold powders. In general, coarse gold particles demonstrated slower kinetic rates thaen the fine or intermediate components incomparable tests.

"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

In situ horizontal stresses were measured to determine the influences of geologic anomalies on the regional horizontal stress field in two coal mines in southern Illinois. Stress measurements were obtained near a normal fault having a 121-ft displacement at the AMAX Wabash Mine and a large coalbed want at the Kerr-McGee Galatia No.5 Mine. Horizontal stress measurements were completed using a Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gauge. The average maximum and minimum horizontal compressional stresses at the Wabash Mine were 1,400 and 800 psi, with the direction of maximum stress ranging from N 78° W to N 83° E. At the Galatia No.5 Mine, the averages were 1,500 and 500 psi, with the direction of maximum stress ranging from N 85° E to N 75° E. Generally, the geologic anomalies appear to have no dramatic effect of the regional horizontal stresses. However, subtle differences between stress measurements suggest an influence by the fault zone at the Wabash Mine. The larger anisotropic stress conditions at the Galatia No.5 Mine could be responsible for the increase in kink zones and directional roof failures.

In September, a fleet of 363-t (400-st) Liebherr trucks became operational in Brazil and have already begun moving iron ore in Para state. Prior to the arrival of the the trucks the Brazilian fleet relied on trucks up to 218 t (240 st). With the addition of the 363 t (400 st) trucks, the fleet has since experienced the high productivity offered by Liebherr T 282 B trucks.

The Swiss are currently building the world’s longest tunnel, the 35-mile long Gotthard Base Tunnel. At Sedrun, for the first time in tunneling, four Roadway Support Machines will drive through most difficult ground, supporting variable diameters of up to 13 m. The machines are prepared for their first deployment. At Amsteg, two Hard Rock TBMs have successfully crossed a known fault zone by applying full circle steel arches and shotcrete immediately behind the cutter head. Comparisons between Drill& Blast and Hard Rock TBM are shown.

A pedra cariri, devido a sua extração, produz um alto teor de formação de sobras, o qual polui muito os arredores dos municípios, prejudicando rios e relevos da região. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar o resíduo da pedra cariri, juntamente com uma argila para propor seu uso na formulação de blocos de vedação. Inicialmente a pedra cariri e a argila foram beneficiadas. Estes materiais foram submetidos a um ensaio de plasticidade pelo método pfefferkorn, e posteriormente á analises de difração de raios-x e de fluorescência de raios-x, para saber suas composições mineralógicas. Através da fluorescência e da difração de raios-x comprovou-se que a pedra cariri possui um teor elevado de CaO(89,0%), que ajudará na densificação da peça e no abaixamento da temperatura de queima, e que a argila tem um percentual bom de sílica livre, que ajudará na eliminação do gás CO2 decorrente da decomposição térmica do carbonato presente na pedra cariri, ajudando também na estabilidade dimensional da peça. Pelas analises feitas, percebe-se um potencial de uso da pedra cariri na formulação de massas para fabricação de blocos de vedação.

"MASSIVE sulphide deposits are found in two areas of New Brunswick, the St. Stephen area and the Bathurst-Newcastle area. In both, the geology in the immediate vicinity of the sulphide bodies is largely inferred from drilling results as outcrop is not plentiful and is, in fact, almost lacking in most places. With few exceptions these deposits have not been explored by underground methods. Consequently much of the. detail on the geology will only become known over a period of years as economic conditions make mining feasible.Much of the information contained in this paper has been supplied directly by company geologists. As a result of the number of contributors, some confusion of nomenclature bas to be anticipated. Cross-sections and plans of the individual deposits are, in most cases, as supplied by the companies concerned. Most of the interpretations are the responsibility of the author."
