This paper is one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of British Honduras has been prepared from the best available information in Washington and is released subject to amplification or correction, if necessary, by United States foreign-service officers. INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. The Birmingham Coal and Coke – Knight Mine is a single seam coal mine in central Alabama. As pit development progressed in 2013, concerns over increasing vibration levels resulted in modifications to the blasting program that inhibited shot size and coal recovery. By January 2014, while still over 1,400 feet (427 m) from the regulatory seismograph, vibration levels climbed above 70% of the mine permit limit, even with triple decking of holes and reduced burden and spacing. At this time the decision was made to commit to the use of signature waveform analysis and precision programmable electronic detonators to minimize vibration and maximize the amount of coal that could be recovered before vibration levels reached permit limits.

Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

"AbstractThe basic intention of this paper is to present, from a practical viewpoint, a thorough outline of all the sound and accepted principles connected with attaining satisfactory rope performance from multi-rope friction winders.In order to emphasize the importance of some aspects of rope maintenance, a limited amount of hoist rope theory has been included, a s it is felt that without this, some of the more critical, but nevertheless practical, aspects would perhaps pass without full appreciation of their individual merit.It is very much appreciated that many of the maintenance topics and practices discussed herein are already being observed with a high degree of skill among those already involved in modern friction winding. The hope is expressed, however, that the paper will be of additional assistance, and of particular help in introducing sound maintenance principles to those who are moving into this field of operation for the first time.Hoist RopesWITH a multi-rope friction winder system, structural upset within the hoist rope's cross section can occur if the ropes slip in the drum treads. This upset will usually appear at either end of the rope at the tangent point of the drum or deflection sheave with the respective conveyance in the normal uppermost position. This slipping action on the drum causes the outer cover of a Full Locked Coil or the strands of a stranded rope to shift, leading to structural upset. The result very often means that the ropes have to be withdrawn from service before completing their maximum service potential.The cause of any rope slipping in its tread can be associated with a discrepancy in tension of that rope between one side of the drum and the other."

Asbestos fibers are highly fibrous silicate fibers that are distinguished by having a large aspect (length to diameter) ratio and are crystallized in an asbestiform habit that causes them to separate into very thin fibers or fibrils. These fibers are distinct from nonasbestiform cleavage fragments and may appear as thick, short fibers which break along cleavage planes without the high strength and flexibility of asbestiform fibers. Since cleavage fragments of respirable dimensions have generally proven nonpathogenic in animal studies, little data exists on assessing well-characterized preparations of cleavage fragments in in vitro models. The available studies show that cleavage fragments are less bioreactive and cytotoxic than asbestiform fibers. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Mining-induced microseismicity data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in a hard-rock mine were analyzed for spatial and temporal patterns that might prove useful for prediction of rock bursts or assessment of rock mass damage changes. Pattern attributes described and illustrated in the previous report (part 1) were applied to the study of aftershock sequences associated with two different stopes. The aftershock sequences were spatially and temporally fractal, and the fractality was maintained for up to 16 h following a sequence progenitor. This suggests mechanical interdependency among the after-shocks. No statistical difference was found in the distributions of fractal dimensions when comparing two different stopes or when comparing aftershock sequences initiated by blasts or bumps. This suggests a lack of sensitivity to both stress perturbation mechanism and local damage states. However, differences between the two stopes were found in other sequence attributes that support inferred differences in the magnitude of stress concentrations and damage near each stope, and over time as a stope is developed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction prob¬lems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are spec¬ific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multi¬ple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.

The physical geometry of a charge has a direct correlation to the geometry of the shock wave. This relationship appears strongest within the boundaries of the visible fireball. As the shock wave propagates outward past the limits of the fireball, the theory states that the geometry of the shock wave should even out and become more spherical. This paper investigates pressure vs. time at two distances, one ‘Near Field’ at the extent of the fireball and one ‘Far Field.' The two Fields were instrumented with three free-Field pressure probes from PCB oriented at 0, 45, and 90 degrees to the front face of the charge, in the same horizontal plane as the charge. This orientation allows for the comparison of the shock wave from the face and vertices of the charge. All the pressure sensors were connected to a Data Acquisition System (DAS) recording at 2 million samples per second (2MS/s). Two high-speed cameras, a Phantom and an MREL Ranger II, recorded the detonations for qualitative examination of the fireball, and the shock wave. Three charge geometries were used and compared to the shock propagation of a sphere. The other geometries tested are cylinders, cubes, and tetrahedrons. Charges were made from a PETN based sheet explosive. In the Near Field, a lower pressure is observed along charge vertices with highest pressures from each face. In the Far Field, vertices record a higher pressure, possibly due to the shock waves from the adjacent faces intersecting, indicating that shock pressures do not always even out in the Far Field. This paper will describe the methodology and findings of this experiment and attempt to determine causality for trends in the data gathered.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is undertaking seismic upgrades of the Claremont Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. The tunnel carries treated water across the active Hayward Fault to supply a major metropolitan area. Studies indicate the tunnel could be severed by fault offset during a major seismic event. A design approach to achieve limited operation of the tunnel following fault displacement has been established and design details are currently being evaluated. This paper describes the project, the design approach, and summarizes significant construction constraints.

Em busca de uma solução para a mitigação dos riscos aos quais os empregados da empresa Sepetiba Tecon S/A ficam expostos, redução dos custos, eliminação do consumo de madeira e da utilização do brometo de metila (substância que agride a camada de ozônio, utilizada no processo de tratamento da madeira para exportação), buscou-se inovar o processo de peação de bobinas com eixo horizontal e vertical até 13 toneladas, dando continuidade ao processo iniciado em 2017. Para isso, foi elaborado o projeto que substituiu toda a madeira utilizada na peação (travamento da carga) por cintas com filamentos de poliéster de alta tenacidade e polipropileno homopolímero, tornando o processo sustentável, seguro e mais eficiente.

Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). During the drilling campaign conducted between October, 1942; and May, 1943, to prove the extent of the scheelite deposit worked by King Island Scheelite N.L. at Grassy, King Island, Tasmania, 35 holes were drilled and 606 samples recovered and assayed for their content. Of these, 238 came from outside the limits of the orebody and were for the most part barren, although a few contained some scheelite. The present statistical analysis is made only of the 368 samples taken from diamond-drill cores of the orebody itself.Drilling Pattern and Sampling MethodsFrom the purely statistical viewpoint, it is realised that methods employed in selecting sites for diamong.-drilling, and of collecting samples from drill cores, do not give a completely unbiassed set of data for analysis. Fig. 1 is a sketch plan showing the relativepositions of the drillholes, which were inclined at an angle of depression of 50 deg. The pattern does not conform to a properly randomized and&apos; regularly-spaced grid, the positions of the later holes being determined by the results obtained from previous holes.Statistically, the bias is, therefore, favourable. The unequal spacing of the drill holes and the lack of uniformity in direction of the lines along which the holes were drilled are unsatisfactory from the mathematical viewpoint; but it is realised that these irregularitiesare difficult to avoid in determining by the most economical methods the extent of such an orebody, and are dictated by geological rather than mathematical necessity.Sampling, also, is lacking in complete uniformity. Each sample is approximately 10ft. in length. However, owing to the fact that 100% recovery of core is rarely achieved, and actual lengths of samples taken are ,primarily governed by the length of the drill runs,and secondarily by lithological changes, there is a considerable amount of variation in the sample length.AssayingWith the exception of 28 samples from three drill holes all samples dealt with in this paper were assayed in the Melbourne University Ore-Dressing Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. These assays were given to the nearest 0.05% WOg as it was considered that more accurate determination was not possible. This fact has been taken into consideration in the frequency analysis below. The 28 assays determined by the Tasmanian Mines Department were given to the nearest 0.01%.

A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

This paper presents the result of the analysis of strain-dependent concrete modulus from full-scale static axial compression load tests conducted on more than 200 instrumented cast-in-place barrettes and bored piles over the past 12 years, covering commonly adopted grades of concrete for heavy foundation construction in Malaysia and Singapore. The concrete modulus values, Ec, analysed were directly back-calculated from the material of the instrumented test piles by means of placing a layer of vibrating wire strain gauges near the pile head region. The best fit curve for back-calculated concrete secant modulus versus measured axial strain follows non-linear behaviour for both categories of test pile samples analysed. The result of the analysis seems to suggest that using average constant modulus value would generally lead to a significant error in load distribution computation, particularly at high stresses region.
