To strike a fair balance is not always easy, nor is it possible always to satisfy both sides. Still, under the free enterprise democratie form of government to which I think we al! subscribe, no better way of handling the problem has yet been discovered."

Mining ‘as usual’, until the most recent decades has resulted in limited landform planning and a general lack of mine waste landform design. Material characterisation, mine planning and dedicated professionals undertaking these tasks were rarely available or in place at the majority of mines. This has led to landform instability, erosion, sediment and poor quality water emanating from mine landforms. In many cases rehabilitation and reclamation failed and these sites have ‘landform features’ that are difficult to relinquish or leave and have little or no apparent land use. In many cases mined landscapes around the world have resulted in a less functional and degraded environment, with deleterious impacts on surrounding ecosystems.This situation is now slowly being addressed, as global companies, academics and practitioners and their organisations have started to exploit the ideas from an integration of earth sciences and mining through the application of planning software dedicated to the design of landforms.This development has had its genesis primarily in the United States. We suggest that process has been driven, in recent decades, by the application of resources in response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), (USA Congress 11 December 1980) and other mine reclamation legislation enacted by federal and states regulators in the USA. The combining impact has seen a huge transfer of capital back from the public purse and ‘potentially responsible parties’, into abandoned mines to affect control, remediation, and reclamation/rehabilitation of those mines.Given this investment in rehabilitation and reclamation, people engaging in the business of landform planning have had the opportunity to address landform reclamation of historic and active sites. The skills of engineers and scientists with improved technology, waste rock characterisation and modelling tools have been combined resulting in the evolution of landform design and in mine planning of active mines. This has delivered cost-effective, sustainable mine closure designs for over 30 years. Integration of mine design with an understanding of geomorphic principals and the natural landscape, coupled with waste and soil characterisation, yield a positive result. Recently work has been applied across large and small-scale projects by companies. As these processes develop, ideas and concepts are evolving that active mines, or mines in the early planning stages, could use to help reduce double handling, and in the long run reduce overall project and closure costs, more effectively attain the desired final land use, and enhance the industry’s reputation and licence to operate.CITATION:Leidich, T,?Lacy, H?and Van?Zyl,?M,?2014. "Geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics of coal seam are important parameters that directly affect the cavability of top coal in the longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method. The impact of these parameters such as coal strength, coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities and top-coal thickness on cavability has not been fully understood in previous numerical analyses. The limitation and selection of the numerical modelling codes were two of the main reasons. In this paper, detailed caving simulations are performed using a 2D distinct element method (DEM) code, UDEC, to study the effect of various critical parameters on top-coal cavability. The numerical analysis evidently shows that the coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities, and top-coal thickness have considerable influences on cavability. Coal strength is also a factor but to a lesser extent. The results presented in this paper contribute to the understanding of top-coal cavability in different mining environments and facilitate the development of an advanced cavability evaluation criterion. INTRODUCTION The longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method was originally developed in the 1950s in the former Soviet Union and France (Tien, 1998). The method was nearly abandoned in Europe after the mid-1980s; however, it has been significantly improved and widely applied in China since the late 1980s. A conceptual model of the LTCC method is shown in Figure 1 in which a thick coal seam is divided into two sections including the lower or cutting section, and the upper or top coal section. The lower section of coal seam is mined by conventional longwall method. Meanwhile, the upper section is recovered by caving through the face support. The LTCC method is considered to be the most viable option for mining general thick seams. Until the end of 1918 Boulder County ranked as one of the foremost tungsten-producing districts of the world, but in August, 1919, there was practically no production in the district. The operators there could not compete with tungsten ores from foreign sources, particularly China, Burma, and South America. As a. result there · has been a strong movement for placing a protective tariff on all imported tungsten ores and products; and it seems to be the general belief of tungsten producers that some form of protection is necessary to the maintenance of the industry in this country. The stimulus, due to the great demand for · tungsten alloys in the manufacture of munitions during the war, was felt in all the productive localities of the world. The ores of Boulder County were especially in demand on account of their comparative. freedom from • harmful impurities, and this demand greatly extended mining operations in the district and increased the efficiency of the gen~ral milling practice there.

Recycling of spent hydrotreating catalysts (HTC) can potentially contribute towards the sustainable extraction of metal values. Treating such materials by hydrometallurgical methods to separate metals from the leach liquor of either acid/alkali media is a major step. In the present study, separation of molybdenum from HCl leach liquor of spent NiMo type HTC has been investigated by applying solvent extraction using Cyanex-923. For this, the chloride solution containing 973 mg/L Mo, 254 mg/L Ni and 1634 mg/L Al was taken as the aqueous feed. The parameters including contact time, concentration of the extractant, acid and chloride, and phase ratio were varied to investigate their effect on the extraction efficiency. The McCabe-Thiele plot suggests that > 99% Mo-loading using a 2-stage extraction process. From the molybdenum depleted solution, nickel was selectively extracted by Cyanex-301 leaving Al in the raffinate.

This paper is published as a progress report for the first half of 1929 on the study of wining methods and costs in the Eastern and Central States. Data obtained from 25 mines using open-stope methods are correlated and summarized. Some of these mines have been described in considerable detail in reports already published as Information Circulars. In addition to the published reports on individual mines, considerable data have been obtained from other mines which were visited and studied during the course of the investigation. Many of these mines will later be described in detail in separate papers, and when the field has been covered in this manner it is planned to issue a bulletin on open-stops methods of mining which will amplify the subject matter of the present paper. Definition of ?Open-Stops?. - The term "open-stopes" as employed by the Bureau of Mines is applied to all naturally supported stopes; that is, stopes in which the excavated ore is not replaced by support of an artificial nature other than preps or stulls and in which the ore or (and) capping are not caved during the active life of the stopes.

Underground blasting has many challenges. The primary aim of blast designers is to optimize drilling and blasting parameters to deal with the associated challenges. Optimizing these parameters is currently based on various rules of thumb, which have many site-specific limitations. Accordingly, computation of these parameters using empirical rock fragmentation predictors can be useful for blast designers. This paper presents the results of work on burden-spacing determination by back-calculation from the empirical Kuz-Ram model for underground stope ring blasting.

At the last MassMin Conference in Sudbury, Caterpillar’s vision of a continuous mining concept for block caving operations was presented on the background of global raw material demand and its continuous increase. By analysing today’s structure of mining processes in block caving, the paper (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012) highlighted the main bottlenecks in the process chain and identified conceptual solutions by help of a case study. The main focus was the paradigm shift from discontinuous batch type operation to a continuous mining process of the blocks.In 2016, the strategic vision has taken major strides forwards and remote continuous operation has become a reality. Caterpillar’s continuous operation system – the Rock Flow system – was successfully installed in Codelco’s Andina mine and start of operation is scheduled in the first half of 2016.Based on continuous product developments, this paper sets the focus on two main aspects of continuous mining. First, field experiences of the Rock Flow system will be shared, highlighting the Andina project course from system installation, to commissioning and successful system start. The second aspect concentrates on the system and mine layout as discussed in the case study scenario in MassMin 2012 (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012).Based on Caterpillar`s continuous product development, the Rock Flow system set-up and panel design were modified for a general roadway design and drawpoint layout. The new design allows an optimised use in block preparation phase (spreading) and full production phase (reaping), operating a fleet of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and Rock Flow systems. The combined use of the two technologies optimises the mining process in every stage of block life and significantly increases the performance of the continuous block caving operation in the production panel to pave the road for the next generation of super caves.CITATION:Frenzel, M, 2016. Sperrylite is one of the most abundant platinum minerals globally, valued for its economic importance but also known for its highly refractory nature, making it difficult to process via the conventional route. This study explores the oxidative leaching of sperrylite using a cyanide–ferricyanide system, with a key focus on characterisation of the mineral and surface speciation under varied leaching conditions using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The parameters investigated include the effect of sodium cyanide concentration, the use of potassium ferricyanide as an oxidant, copper sulphate pentahydrate as a catalyst, as well as the effects of temperature and particle size. A limited set of leaching tests was carried out to study the surface chemistry rather than optimising dissolution conditions. This approach identified mineral oxidation states and shifts in binding energies, prior to and post leaching. XPS analysis of sperrylite’s surface chemistry identified key species, comprising the bulk Pt(II)–As (≈73 eV) and As(–I)–Pt (≈41.8 eV) states, together with surface oxidation products Pt(II)–O (≈72 eV), Pt(IV)–O (≈74.5 eV), As(III)–O (≈43 eV) and As(V)–O (44.5 eV). Leaching led to the removal of pre-existing oxides on the ultra-finely ground sample, exposing the underlying bulk species. In contrast, the crystalline sample with an initial low concentration of oxides, generated higher amounts of fully oxidised species after leaching, reflecting greater surface reactivity.

Banded Iron Formations (BIF) are sedimentary rock formations ranging in age from 0.8 to 3.8 billion years and consist of alternating layers of silica and iron. The thickness of the alternating layers varies between and within deposits, with this lithology forming approximately two-thirds of South Africa’s future low-grade hematite resources. The production costs for South African iron ore producers are approximately double that of the largest iron ore producers, namely, Brazil and Australia. This in conjunction with volatile commodity prices, necessitated a cost-sensitive beneficiation strategy for low-grade hematite to sustain the industry and extend life of mine. A BIF sample grading at 44% Fe and comprising predominantly of hematite and quartz with minor amounts of magnetite and goethite was subjected to three fines gravity processing routes to establish the amenability of this sample to beneficiation. To provide flexibility for iron ore producers who still have high-grade resources available, two product grades were considered, namely a 60% Fe product for further blending or a 63% Fe product for direct sales.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. The Port Lands in Downtown Toronto is a vast waterfront area that has been long remained undeveloped. This is due to the dual challenges of soil contamination resulting from decades of industrial activities and high flooding potential from the nearby Don River. The Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure Project (PLFP) seeks to unlock the development potential of this strategic downtown land. This initiative also simultaneously mitigating flood risks for the Port Lands and surrounding areas. The project involves the creation of a new river channel through the existing Port Lands to redirect floodwaters into the inner harbor and Lake Ontario. This new river channel excavation is protected by three dam liked plug walls which isolate the lake water from entering the excavation. Given the industrial contamination in the soil, the installation of a permanent cut-off wall along the new river alignment is also imperative to isolate contaminants from migrating into the future river channel. The west plug wall is positioned at the westernmost point of the river channel excavation and directly adjacent to Lake Ontario. The innovative use of a diaphragm wall technique to construct the west plug wall allow the wall to serve as a dock wall, dam, excavation support, cut-off wall, and load-bearing element throughout the different stages of the river excavation. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the design and installation of the west plug wall. It provides valuable insights into the practical application of diaphragm walls and how it helps deliver this complex urban flood protection and infrastructure projects.

"It is well known that from time-to-time a vehicle will interact with a bund or windrow and often the barrier is insufficient to safely arrest that vehicle. The result of such an incident is often catastrophic. Regulations around the requirement for edge protection near pit edges vary between jurisdictions. Generally in Australia regulations tend to be around placing the responsibility on the mine operator to provide ‘adequate’ or ‘appropriate’ edge protection. Guidelines often place a minimum height of bund at between half and two-thirds the diameter of the largest tyre on-site.Safescape has identified the opportunity to improve safety in open pit edge protection and is currently developing the Edge Protector (EP) product. The EP is designed to create a vertical front face to a conventional broken rock safety bund. The fundamental premise of the product is that by creating a vertical front face to the bund, trucks cannot easily drive up over the bund and instead have to push through the rock to get to the other side.In addition to providing a safer system for arresting vehicles, the vertical front face also means that extra space is made available in the haul road. This can either be used to facilitate larger trucks or when designing a new mine, with an increase in overall pit slope.This paper outlines the research and development of a new edge protection product. Ion exchange is widely used in hydrometallurgical operations for the recovery and purification of valuable metals. Special chelating resins have a high affinity for specific elements, allowing the selective removal of low levels of impurities from a background of highly concentrated valuable metal. Solvent-impregnated resins have been added to this group more recently, expanding the treatment options. These products find application in the purification of cobalt-rich liquor prior to the production of high-purity metal or metal salts. Impurities in copper-cobalt circuits that are typically targeted by ion exchange include iron, uranium, copper, zinc, nickel, bismuth, and antimony. Ion-exchange resins can also be used to treat tailings, thereby recovering additional valuable metal and improving the Environmental and Social Governance credentials of the operation. "AbstractMeasurement and control systems in minerals processing plants are usually well thought out and designed. The criteria and design parameters have been interpreted correctly.However, these systems often fail to perform satisfactorily or break down altogether as a result of in-plant conditions which are unpredictable and over which the instrument systems designer has no direct control. The foresight necessary to anticipate the problems and allow for them in the systems design can only be generated by experience.This paper lists the most common of these problems and offers practical methods for their solution. It then follows with an analysis of instrument installation practices and comments on special points that need watching.Finally, instrument maintenance is discussed with a view to achieving good maintenance at the best possible economy.Good MeasurementGeneralTHE MINES and mineral processing plants of the nineteen seventies, after decades of sensible caution, have now committed themselves to extensive automatic control. X-ray analyzers are freely specified. MAGNESIUM metal, with a specific gravity of 1.73, is two-thirds the weight of aluminium and one-quarter that of steel. It is the lightest metal which is stable in the atmosphere. Before the war it had begun, though somewhat slowly, to take a place among the established metals. In 1939, magnesium production on this continent amounted to some 3,000 tons per annum and was confined to one company. At that time, Germany produced perhaps 20,000 tons. The advent of war, however, increased the demand to fantastic heights and introduced production problems of unprecedented magnitude. By the end of 1943, North American production is expected to reach 300,000 tons per annum (1), an increase of one hundredfold. Such a rate of expansion has not been witnessed previously in the history of metallurgy. It has given the metallurgist an opportunity to try new production methods and to learn in a short time what might otherwise have taken many years. The metallurgy of magnesium is still in its formative years and at this time widely different production methods are in operation side by side. This paper will discuss these methods in so far as information is available for publication at this time. A general description of the new Canadian industry will be included.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity.
