"SART technology is a useful tool for improving the economics of gold recovery from certain types of complex gold ores. SART liberates cyanide consumed by base metals such as copper, zinc and nickel, and enables the newly freed cyanide to be recycled to precious metals leaching while producing high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates for sale. The benefits of SART include the reduction in cyanide consumption, avoidance of cyanide destruction costs, minimization of risks of environmental non-compliance due to residues of cyanide destruction reporting to mine effluents, and generation of extra revenue from the sale of base metal concentrates. Concerns with SART typically include uncertainties around capital and operating costs and proper integration of SART into the overall metallurgical flowsheet. This paper presents two case studies addressing these concerns. The first involves actual costs of the full scale SART integrated into a gold heap leach operation and treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a mine in Mexico. The second involves field pilot testing and a preliminary cost estimate for integrating SART into a silver mine in Peru using Merrill Crowe.INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes in traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheets. One of the tools available to the industry to help deal with interferences of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle. Although SART is a commercially available technology, it is still relatively new to the industry. Fewer than ten (10) full scale plants have been constructed in the past couple of decades. Some of these SART plants are small, most are located at remote sites, and the majority have not operated on a continuous basis. This has resulted in a general lack of information in the industry about the true costs, operability and metallurgical performance of SART. BQE Water has been involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of large scale SART plants in Mexico, Turkey and Chile and has conducted field testing programs as part of the technical assessment of SART integration into various metallurgical circuits. Having built and operated numerous plants utilizing selective sulphide precipitation of heavy metals, BQE Water has gained unique insight into the design and control of the sulphidization stage of SART to minimize costs and ensure high efficiency in cyanide recovery."

The utilization of silica particles originated in rice husks as reinforcements of magnesium composites was discussed. By using the solid state reaction of rice husk silica particles with magnesium powder, P/M magnesium based composites dispersed with the magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) and magnesium oxide (MgO) were fabricated. High-purity silica particles were originated from rice husks, one of the major agricultural wastes, via the citric acid leaching treatment and combustion in air. The effects of the silica particle characteristics such as size, crystalline and porous structures, on the reactivity of silica and magnesium to synthesize Mg2Si intermetallic were discussed. Amorphous silica was more useful for this reaction than crystalline one. The reactivity of rice husk silica was superior to that of the conventional mineral silica particles because of not only its amorphous structure but the larger specific surface area due to their pore structures. In the case of the green compact of the mixture of the rice husk silica and Mg powder, the silica particle size was not effective on the reactivity because the coarse particles were fractured into fine ones by cold compaction. The distribution of Mg2Si intermetallics of magnesium powder composites consolidated by SPS process was investigated by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. Their mechanical and physical properties were also evaluated in detail.

"Groundwater with elevated sulfate and metals was treated using a sulfate-reducing pilot PRB consisting of a series of six 55-gallon drums filled with ZVI (Fe0), wood chips, brewer’s grain, limestone, and emulsified vegetable oil (EVO). Sulfate was reduced from >3000 to <250 mg/L and Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn concentrations declined up to 3 orders of magnitude in 2 months. After 6 months of operation at a 7.5-day retention time, sulfate broke through. The system was then rejuvenated by injecting EVO in each drum and operated for 5 more months at a 9-day retention time. Sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pilot system grew by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude in 2 months. Some cementation of the PRB media was observed in the first 2 drums after processing 25 pore volumes of water, due to preferential upstream precipitation of sulfides; this can be avoided through operational modifications. Resulting permeability losses were estimated at 0.1% to 1% per year. Absorption/desorption was tested at bench scale to evaluate the use of various oil-soaked sorbents as a slow-release source of dissolved carbon. The tests show that oil sorbents can increase the useful life of a PRB between oil refills to over 100 pore volumes. INTRODUCTION High sulfate concentrations, low pH, and dissolved metal exceedances are common characteristics of mining-influenced water (MIW). Above-ground such MIW is commonly treated using biochemical reactors (BCR). In a BCR, water generally flows vertically downward through a layer of biomass, such as wood chips, manure, etc. The dissolved organics resulting from the decay of this material are oxidized first by microbes using oxygen; when oxygen is exhausted, other bacteria can use nitrate, and then sulfate to oxidize organics. Longwall mining operations have been in place in Australia since the early 1960s. This mining method is currently used to extract the bulk of coal obtained from underground mines in Australia (CSIRO, 2010). Despite the high tonnages extracted the expected utilisation of much equipment remains relatively low. To some extent this level of utilisation is influenced by the variability in conditions inherent in the mining process. This variability in production rates presents challenges to those attempting to design a coal clearance system. The difficulty is to design a system that has sufficient capacity to support production, without over capitalising or incurring high operating costs. The need to allow for a series of largely unplanned events in the design of a coal clearance system makes simulation modelling an ideal technology to employ. Simulation modelling is a methodology that allows a system with interacting components to be modelled over time, while explicitly taking into account unplanned events that may disrupt operations.This paper discusses how dynamic simulation models have been used to assist in the design of coal clearance systems. Typically this type of modelling has been used to look at the likely profile of production rates from the Longwall shearer and to determine how well various proposed combinations of belts, bins and stockpiles would support production.

A key driver to the success of a tunnelling project (the project) is the management of hydrogeological risk. The hydrogeological risk, if not managed, may cause significant impacts on the overall performance of the project. Impacts may include groundwater quality impairment due to contaminant transport and acid drainage from disturbed geology to groundwater, and groundwater lowering. The groundwater lowering and quality impairment may cause tunnel failure, with consequences such as injury to humans, as well as reduced property and environmental values, potentially costing millions of dollars to sponsors of the project. Depending on the nature of the contaminants and level of hydraulic connection of bedrock fracture along the length of tunnel, the contaminant transport may reduce structural strength of the tunnel due to corrosive action of contaminants such as acid drainage. The groundwater lowering can lead to varying degrees of ground settlement, posing threat of tunnel collapse. The management of hydrogeological risk includes:detection of potential pathways for contaminants into and around the tunnel,identification of factors responsible for the lowering of groundwater, and development of strategic measures to control groundwater lowering and contaminant transport. The paper presents an in-house hydrogeological risk management model named Vedanta-THRM (tunnel hydrogeological risk management). The model uses Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004 (Standards Australia, 2004), Pressure State Response framework developed by Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, and Interaction Matrices. The Vedanta-THRM identifies important characteristics, processes and events of potential hydrogeological risk and develops control measures for managing hydrogeological risk throughout the life cycle of the project. The Vedanta-THRM was applied for a project in the early stages of planning and found to be useful in assessing, evaluating and reducing the hydrogeological risk in a managed approach that potentially increased the performance of the project. The application results also provided management options for use by project sponsors and insurance industry, which included tunnel risk financing options and options for equity investors to choose among various returns under different tunnel credit ratings.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter contents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal&apos;s self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal&apos;s propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model&apos;s ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal - three important factors affecting the coal&apos;s self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

"Global economic development has drastically increased energy consumption in various fields, and CO2 emissions, which are a prime cause of global warming, have continued to increase. Therefore, measures for reduction of the load on the environment have been taken in various areas. Energy improvements of various types of work vessels used for offshore construction might be expected to greatly reduce consumption of fossil fuel, because many of these vessels are larger than land construction machinery and consume large amounts of fuel, which will lead to effective use of resources and alleviation of the load on the environment. However, such efforts are unusual because renewal or newbuilding of work vessels is rare. We developed a work-vessel hybrid energy system based on fuel-saving technology and use of natural energy to promote reduction of CO2 emissions for a large deep mixing barge in 2010. We developed an Automated Generator Start-Stop System, which automatically controls the number of active generators according to power demand during ground-improving work of the deep mixing barge in 2012, thus further improving the work-vessel hybrid energy system. These systems are introduced here.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, CO2 emission, which is one of the factors of the Global Warming has been increasing. According to the report by National Institute for the Environmental Studies in Japan (2014), CO2 emission in Japan has amounted to 1,276 million tons. The industrial sector in the total emission becomes 500 million tons that is equivalent to 39%. Meanwhile, the offshore Deep Mixing Method requires work vessels mounted with a large power plant (Fig. 1). In sea ground boring, very large load acts on the deep mixing machine, and the large power is required, which results in the increase in CO2 emission. To achieve eco-friendly marine construction, the work-vessel hybrid energy system was developed. Table 1 shows specifications of the deep mixing barge with the work-vessel hybrid energy system."

The United States Bureau of Mines has engaged in a study of the conditions under which coal mine accidents, resulting in the loss of life, limb, or time to the injured person, occur from falls of roof and coal. This publication is devoted to the results of a study conducted in the coal mines of the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal fields of Utah. To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

"In 1957, an asbestos orebody was discovered in the northern sector of the Ungava Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, an area now identified as Asbestos Hill. The deposit is situated on a plateau 1700 feet above sea level and 42 miles inland from Hudson Strait. It is a bleak, iso. lated location of typical arctic environment. Fifteen years were to pass before the first shipment of ungraded fibre was made in 1972. These years we1•e occupied with field surveys and investigations, diamond drilling, engineering design, evaluation of investment and operating costs, and construction. The problems normally associated with mine development were further complicated by location, isolation, and the extreme cold and permanently frozen ground of the arctic regions. Unique to an isolated arctic operation are the organization of support facilities and services, procurement and retention of personnel, construction of access roads and airports, and scheduling of product out and supplies in during the short summer period of sea navigation."

In 2005, we automated a forklift-based Hot Metal Carrier to be capable of typical metal transfer operations around a smelter. The project was highly successful and the vehicle has demonstrated hundreds of hours of live autonomous operations to thousands of people from industry and the public. As a result of the exposure and success of the project, we have expanded its focus to demonstrate how various technology components can be utilised to gain benefits in other areas of industrial operations. These include asset tracking, vehicle usage analysis, pedestrian detection and infrastructure profiling. Each of these components was derived from the core autonomous vehicle technology suite and has shown a high potential for improving safety and efficiency of vehicle-related operations, and improved diagnostic processes for measuring deformations of bakes and furnaces. The autonomous vehicle project and its extended technologies are described in this paper.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2010 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2010: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2010, as compiled by the USGS, and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities. These were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

REPUBLIC Steel Corporation&apos;s iron-ore properties in the Adirondacks consist of mines, mills, and sintering plants in the Mineville and Port Henry area and at Lyon Mountain. This article will deal with the properties in the vicinity of Mineville and Port Henry. In 1938, when Republic leased the Mineville- Port Henry operations from the Witherbee Sherman Corp., these properties had just come through some hard depression years. As a result, the mine development program was far behind schedule; most of the equipment needed replacement; and above all, the entire system of mining had to be completely changed to reduce operating costs. The concentrator had been in operation for many years; the process was dry and dusty. Machinery and equipment were either badly worn or entirely obsolete. The sintering plant, also long in operation, was badly in need of repairs.

De este porcentaje, casi la mitad corresponde a un cargo administrativo y solo un 4%, a un cargo de toma de decisiones. La presente investigación busca mostrar el diagnóstico inicial de participación de la mujer en la minería del Perú, estudiar el caso de Chile —país de la región cuya actividad principal también es la minería y que a la fecha tiene un 8.5% de participación de la mujer en la industria—, recoger aquellas buenas prácticas que podrían ser aplicables en el país y establecer los principales retos y propuestas innovadoras para la mediana y gran minería.

La actividad sísmica del Perú se origina en el proceso de convergencia de la Placa de Nazca bajo la Sudamericana, donde la geometría de la placa oceánica presenta dos tipos de segmentos, una que subduce con un ángulo de 30º hacia el este y la otra, de bajo ángulo o subducción plana. En esta perspectiva, el presente texto describe la estructura y cinemática de la Falla Purgatorio Mirave (FPM) ubicada en la vertiente pacífica de la Cordillera Occidental del sur del Perú, entre la ciudad de Tacna y Moquegua. Dicha falla tiene una longitud aproximada de 40 km al nivel, donde la placa oceánica subduce con un ángulo de 30º al este y el vector de convergencia es oblicuo en relación a la zona de contacto de las placas. Asimismo, la geometría de la costa afecta también la distribución de la deformación y la morfología resultante. La geometría, morfoestructura y cinemática de la estructura se puede dividir en tres segmentos: el segmento Este presenta una traza de falla rectilínea, morfoestructura bien conservada y el último movimiento de tipo inverso, el segmento central de traza rectilínea y escarpe de falla bien conservado, donde se observa el mayor desnivel de la FPM (3.5 m) y que afecta los depósitos cuaternarios, según las medidas de estrías en el plano de falla nos indica que el ultimo movimiento fue de tipo dextral. Finalmente, el segmento oeste presenta su parte más oriental una traza rectilínea para luego hacerse curvilínea y formar una geometría de tipo cola de caballo o echelón hacia su parte occidental, este segmento muestra evidencias deque su último movimiento es de tipo inverso, formando pliegues de propagación de falla que afectan depósitos cuaternarios.

Jennmar Corporation. in an effort to improve mine roof control, has conducted extensive study and research comparing tensioned point anchor resin systems versus the use of non-tensioned fully grouted rehar. Preliminary indications are showing that in thinly laminated, weak strata, tensioned point anchor resin systems are providing more effective roof control than the non-tensioned fully grouted rehar. In this paper two case studies are presented in which tensioned point anchor resin systems were utilized to stabilize and control the mine roof in two different mines. Both mines are alike in many ways, but yet very different in other aspects. However, the mines do share one main common factor. and that being the non-effectiveness of the non-tensioned fully grouted rebar in controlling the thinly lamininated strata in each respective mine.

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. Flotation process is based on the formation of primary collector-based supramolecular associates at the mineral surface and within the pulp. Supra molecular chemistry allows studying within a common framework, all kinds of molecular associates, from dimers to large assemblies, resulting from spontaneous association of a large number of interacting components of the flotation system, where the collective action of non covalent bonds can have an important role. Self-organization of supra molecular assemblies in the flotation process can be controlled by modifying the chemical structure of the collector, the nature and arrangement of functional group in it, by introducing secondary agents (SA) into the process, to adjust the interaction between the collector and the surface and to control the hydrophobicity of the adsorption bed. This offers broad opportunities to build supramolecular assemblies to improve the efficiency of flotation. Besides, the more complex is the system, the weaker are the interactions, that determine its behavior. This powerful factor still is not employed deliberately to control the flotation process. Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) - dialkyl phosphoric acids whose radicals contain ethoxylated groups ? are considered as nanocompounds, that can be used in building supramolecular assemblies. The presence in an OPC molecule of functional groups (P=O, P (O) O-, P (O) OH), ethoxylated groups, and aromatic rings is the basis for the formation of stable supramolecular associates. Gross formula: C54H94KO16P. Molecular weight is 1069.39. Phosphoryl anion has a regular tetrahedral structure with the angle of 109.5°. Lengths of -P-O- bonds in a PN molecule are 1.7345Å; length of the hydrocarbonic radical C42-C72 = 33.942Å. In an alkaline environment, PN is in the form of the anion, in an acidic environment ? in the form of the polycation due to protonation of the oxygen in the EO group. Chem Office software suite was used to generate three-dimensional images of an OPC molecule in acidic and alkaline environments, to reveal the OPC geometry (bond lengths, valence angles, aliphatic radical length), to identify the collector&apos;s binding sites with the mineral surface, to find the most stable and energy-efficient molecular conformations of an OPC molecule and its complexes with minerals under various conditions. Mechanisms of interaction between OPCs and the mineral surfaces are different. In ores whose minerals are dominated by ionic bonds (fluorite), the interaction mainly involves the anionic form of the collector; in ores, whose minerals are dominated by covalent bonds - the oxygen of the phosphoryl group (donor-acceptor interaction) and the oxygen of the ethoxylated groups. This difference is responsible for the formation of spatial associates with different surface layer structures. Introduction of supramolecular chemistry concepts into the analysis of flotation phenomena and mechanisms can become an effective tool for better understanding the flotation process and offers new means of consistently improving its effectiveness.

This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.
