The energy crisis and the resurgence of mining activities highlighted 1972-73. Added to the impetus for more effective materials handling systems has been the continued upward trend of inflation and labor costs. The need for addressing the fundamentals has led to the trend toward an overall systems approach to materials handling problems.1 The decision to move forward with large mining ventures such as the $150 million Hibbing taconite comple2 and the immense Carajas iron project must base themselves on indepth studies of a host of factors viewed in the context of an integral mine-transport-market system. What's important is that each ton of pellet or ore must be an economical commodity at the end users' furnace. The project can still be viaable even if certain components in the entire network appear to be individually costly.

En esta investigación se plantea una metodología de planificación estratégica de una operación minera que incluye el tiempo en el valor del bloque; es decir, basada en múltiples corridas sucesivas de planes mineros con diferentes conjuntos de fases de minados. Su objetivo de optimización está regido por el valor presente neto de cada bloque del modelo económico, sometido varias veces a la versión mejorada del algoritmo de Lerchs y Grossman, pseudoflow, de manera que se mejoran enormemente los tiempos de estimación de las nuevas propuestas de fases de minado. Asimismo, al hacer uso de la programación lineal entera mixta, se consigue el plan minero óptimo de mayor valor presente neto.

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium, chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained, but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process. In all of the processes suggested for the recovery-of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation.

"Printed circuit boards (PCB) are particularly problematic to recycle because of the heterogeneous mix of organic materials, metals, and glass fiber. PCBs are found in almost every electroelectronic equipment and their recycling process involves a pre-treatment to separate the products which contain targeted metals. In this work, a physical processing involving sequential shredding and hanuner milling were used to obtain a comminuted sample from scrap printers PCBs. The thus prepared sample was analyzed for particle size distribution and by optical microscopy as well was subjected to pyrolysis, leachabilty and chemical composition determination by XRF. The metals concentration was determined by ICP and AAS. The PCBs have been also analyzed by SEM-EDS (micro-analysis and X-ray mapping). The results show that the studied PCBs are lead free, multilayer with 4 copper layers, have 45% of metals and the copper is present in significantly higher concentration than the rest of the metals.IntroductionThe global generation of e-waste (electrical and electronic equipment waste - WEEEs) grows at a rate of about 40 millions of tons per year [ l].Among this e-waste there are PCBs that are present in almost all electronic equipment. Their composition is heterogeneous and varies according to several factors, including: kind of EEE, when and where it was produced, fabrication technology [2], etc. In printers, the PCBs represent about 6.6- 8 wt.% [3].The PCBs treatment may include physical, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, ectrometallurgical and more recently bio-hydrometallurgical process. Normally there is a combination between these processes [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10].The diversity between the different PCBs composition complicates the recycling process since the composition of metal and others materials can vary according to the models. So characterization is an indispensable step before any processing of PCB to begin. Owing to the above said, the main goal of this work has been set to characterize representative samples of PCBs from printers through physical, chemical and microstructural analyses."

An optical instrument designed for the on-line measurement of the size distribution of coarse particles (3-500 mm) being transported on a conveyor belt is described. Included is a discussion of the measurement technique, as well as test data verifying the legitimacy of the basic sensing approach. Field data indicating the instrument's ability to make useful measurements in an industrial environment are also presented. Applications in the mining and mineral industry, for which this instrument was orginally developed, are outlined, with particular emphasis given to the areas of crushing and grinding control.

THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

The tailings produced from the Kirki (Agios Filippos) high sulfidation epithermal deposit processing plant are laminated, weakly cemented and their particle size ranges from fine sand to fine silt. They are mainly composed of milling residues of gangue (quartz, dickite/kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite); sulfides and secondary minerals (jarosite group minerals, butlerite, anglesite, beudantite and gypsum) are present to a lesser extent. They have high Pb and Zn (average 0.75 % and 0.57 % respectively) and low S (1.04 to 2.92 %), Cu, As, Cd, Ni and Sb content (average 248, 163, 59, 27, 20 g/t respectively). Stagnant waters forming small ponds on the surface of the impoundments exhibit low pH and high heavy metal and sulfate concentrations. Negative Net Neutralization Potential (NNP) characterizes the tailings, indicating moderate to high potential for acid generation. Application of the TCLP test revealed that the tailings are characterized as toxic because of the increased solubility of Pb and Cd. On the other hand, As TCLP solubility is very low.

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. Several articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken temperatures in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the subject and was also used by the writers. Previous Investigations In 1916, Burgess' made perhaps the first systematic series of measurements in steel furnaces. The emissivity figures of 0.40 for liquid steel and of 0.53 to 0.65 for liquid slags had been determined by the Bureau of Standards and were used by Burgess in this work. These correction factors are still being used and are regarded as fairly accurate, so that the tapping and teeming temperatures on metal streams given by Burgess should be very nearly correct. Most of his temperatures of furnace roofs and slag surfaces were taken while flames were present in the furnaces and include a few roof temperatures above 1700' C. (3100' F.).

The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to assess the ability of trainees to don an unfamiliar self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) after having become familiar with how to put on a different type of apparatus. Prepractice instruction was the same for all individuals learning to put on a device: a step-by-step, hands-on talk-through using the "3+3" method. Subjects were assigned to groups that had their initial donning instruction delivered on either the Draeger OXY-SR60B or the CSE SR-100. Trainees' performances were then evaluated using the other model. Donning trials were analyzed using a number of measures. It was found that SCSR design had a moderate influence upon how well the donning task transferred.

The advances in seismic design considering soil-structure interaction or soil-pile-structure interaction are described using a substructure approach. The nonlinearity of soil is considered approximately using a boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, and computer programs are available for practical applications. The validation of model is confirmed with dynamic tests on piles in the field, and the results for a single pile are used to compare with the predictions in this study. The liquefaction for sand soil layer can be accounted for, and a case of liquefaction is discussed. Two practical examples are examined, a vacuum tower structure supported on foundation of steel pile group and a table top structure supported on foundation of concrete pile group. To illustrate the effects of soil-pile-structure interaction on the seismic response of vacuum structure, different base conditions are considered, rigid base, i.e. no deformation of the foundation; linear soil-pile system; and nonlinear soil-pile system. The method introduced can be applied to the design of tall buildings, bridges, industrial structures and offshore platforms with soil-pile-structure interaction under seismic or dynamic loads.

In coal mining, longwall mining is a preferred method to maximize production by extracting large blocks of coal that have been outlined with a set of development entries. In U.S. mines, longwall panels are typically 305 m (1,000ft) wide (with a continual trend towards even wider panels), and usually over 3,050 m (10,000ft) in length. The increasing size of longwall panels, while helping to increase coal production, may also increase methane emissions due to the exposure of the mining environment to a larger area of fractured, gas-bearing strata. Thus, understanding the impact of increased panel widths on methane emissions, and designing gob gas ventholes and bleeder systems accordingly, can enhance the safety of the underground workforce by reducing their exposure to potentially explosive accumulations of methane/air mixtures. As part of its mine safety research program, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has initiated a reservoir modeling effort to better understand the interaction of the various geotechnical factors influencing gas flow within and to the underground longwall mining environment. A focus of this modeling effort has been 1) the prediction of the incremental amount of methane emissions to be expected due to increasing longwall panel widths, and 2) optimizing gob gas venthole completion practices to capture more of the gas in the subsided strata above longwall panels before it can enter the ventilation system of the underground workplace. The history matching phase of the study has been carried out on a 381-m (1,250ft) wide panel in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. Simulations have also been completed for a 442 m (1,450ft) wide panel to estimate the incremental increase in methane emissions and the performance of current gob gas venthole placement configurations. Additional venthole placement configurations were simulated to investigate options for optimizing methane capture from the subsided strata above the wider longwall panel.

It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

In the present study,we used natural fibers malva (Urenalobata, Linn) in 0, 15 and 30 vol.% as reinforcement of epoxy matrix composites to ballistic application. Ballistic efficiency of these composites was assessed by measuring the energy absorbed and residual velocity after impact 9 mm FMJ ammunition projectile, aiming to compare with traditional materials, such as: aramid fabric Kevlar™ used in vests for personal protection. The results showed by visual analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that the main active failure mechanisms in composites were delamination layers and fiber rupture. In test groups can be seen that the absorbed energy and the residual velocity varies with the fiber percentage used. Compared to aramid there is both a gain in weight and cost of the ballistic armor, which makes the fiber malva a promising material applications involving personal protection against 9 mm caliber ammunition.
