Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

It is recognized that the determination of electrical resistivity of the earth within a given area may furnish information concerning the location of certain mineralized strata of economic importance. Present knowledge of the electrical resistivity of the various rock formations is almost nil, and the geophysicist who is detailed to make a survey of an area without any data as to the relative resistivity of the underlying rocks is greatly handicapped. Such surveys are usually made within areas known to contain mineral deposits to aid in locating desirable points for drilling. Usually these areas have been prospected by diamond drilling, and drill cores of the various rocks and ores are usually obtainable. Were it possible to make resistivity tests in a laboratory of the drill cores or from pieces of the rocks and ore within an area before attempting a field survey, this would indicate not only the advisability for such a survey but would aid considerably in the interpretation of the results of such a survey. To be of most value a definite method should be used for all such tests, and as yet such a method has not been established.

"The world production of crude steel in 2009 reached 1.2 billion tons. For each ton of steel produced, 150 kg of steelmaking slag and 20 kg of steelmaking dust are generated. These are wastes with considerable production and limited applications, therefore this work studied the recovery of these wastes into useful sub-products. The slag was used as raw material in the production of rock wool (a thermo-acoustic insulator) and the dust was inserted in the iron ore sintering process. Results showed that produced materials have exceptional proprieties, therefore the recovery of these wastes can contribute to decrease extraction of non-renewable resources, reduce the costs and impact of disposals, and aggregate value to the slag and dust.1. The use of helical piles for permanent foundation applications has become a practical and feasible alternative to the traditional cast-in-place concrete or driven steel piles. Research and development, installation equipment and manufacturing improvements in the helical piling industry have led to this trend. Moreover helical piles are typically smaller in size and weigh less than traditional piles, and require relatively smaller equipment and therefore it is a cost effective option. The latter is a very attractive feature for foundations installed in remote sites across Alaska. This paper presents full-scale pile load test results of helical piles and driven steel pipe piles installed in a site located in Anchorage, Alaska. Four full-scale pile load tests were carried out including two axial compression and two uplift load tests. Both helical piles and driven steel pipe piles were installed and tested at the same site under similar conditions to provide a direct comparison. The results of the full-scale load tests indicate the superior performance of helical piles compared to driven steel pipe piles. This paper describes the pile installation and test setup, presents the test data, and discusses the results.

An assessment of potential groundwater movement beneath the tailing impoundment at the Red Dog Mine was performed, and has indicated a unique aquifer situation within sub-permafrost groundwater at the site. The aquifer was shown to be isolated from both vertical recharge and a real discharge, and is characterized as a virtually no-flow system. The permafrost resulted in a deep aquifer with high tidal efficiency, meaning that variable surface loads are easily transmitted to the fluid. The tidal efficiency has been characterized through analysis of water level fluctuations that respond to earth tides, barometric pressure loads, and loading from the pond.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere.' This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors1'1, and more recently by Rose.3 This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis' attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis' result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically. The probable source of error was found to lie in an erroneous assumption made by Davis in converting the energy of ball or rod motion to power. With the same approach, but with different assumptions, a modified equation has been obtained which predicts results that are usually consistently high. This is to be expected, since it is assumed that there is no slip between load and shell and no interference among tumbling bodies. Both these effects should account for the difference. Development of Equation: When a cylindrical shell charged with a substantial weight of rods or balls is slowly rotated about a horizontal axis, the load surface first assumes an inclination that gradually increases to a maximum. Continued rotation results in failure within the load, characterized by a sliding of the top layers down the slope and a reduction in the angle of inclination. Further rotation again increases the angle, and the cycle repeats. If the speed is increased, there is continuous load failure and build-up and a continuous stream of rods or balls descends over the upcoming mass, which moves in circular arcs. Volcan Compañía Minera S.A.A. es una empresa minera peruana que inicia sus operaciones en el año 1943. A lo largo de sus 71 años ha logrado posicionarse como la primera productora de plata, plomo y la segunda en zinc a nivel nacional. Durante este periodo la compañía se ha expandido y ha alcanzado excelentes resultados de productividad. Sin embargo, estos resultados no han sido acompañados de indicadores de seguridad favorables. En los últimos 12 años (2000-2011) se han presentado 88 fatalidades, 960 accidentes incapacitantes y 1400 accidentes leves. En el 2012, la dirección de la organización decide realizar un cambio trascendental en la gestión de seguridad, estableciendo como primer objetivo estratégico de la compañía la implementación de una cultura de seguridad de clase mundial para minimizar la frecuencia y la severidad de los accidentes de trabajo. Partiendo de este objetivo en el año 2012 realizó un diagnóstico a nivel corporativo que nos ubicó en una fase de dependencia en relación a la curva de cambio de cultura, tomando como base el concepto de Bradley e identificó la necesidad de efectuar un cambio en dos frentes: Sistema de Gestión SSO y Líderes. Diseñamos una "Estructura Organizacional" en los tres niveles de operaciones, lo que involucró a los líderes y evidenció así el "Liderazgo Visible". El sistema se basó en cuatro pilares fundamentales y aplicó las siguientes herramientas: gestión de riesgos, condiciones, conocimiento y comportamiento. Dentro del pilar condiciones, priorizamos doce riesgos críticos para contener los accidentes mortales e incapacitantes. Los Líderes fueron entrenados en la herramienta de gestión y en los cuatro pilares del sistema. De esta manera se logró el impacto directo en la supervisión y los trabajadores, así como desarrollar las competencias de comunicación, motivación, retroalimentación, confianza y compromiso. El modelo está evolucionando la cultura de seguridad hacia una fase de interdependencia. Hemos reducido los índices de frecuencia en un 55%, severidad en un 92% y accidentabilidad en 96%, sin embargo nuestro logro más importante es la contención de los accidentes mortales a la fecha.

G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

Laboratory experiments show that the delay detonators, either electric (copper coated or aluminium) or non-electric (down-the-hole) as generally used in opencast mines and quarries have some scattering from the actual firing time due to manufacturing inaccuracy and variations in basic ingredients of the product. This scattering varies from 1 to 4 % depending on the product quality. Due to this component scatter, adverse blasting effects like misfires, overbreak, underbreak or fly-rock may occur if the design patterns are not judiciously made. It has also direct impact on muck profile and fragmentation.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dyke/stock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

"INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these holes, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

A laboratory study of acid-ferrous sulfate treatment of low-grade manganese ores from the Cuyuna range, Minnesota resulted in 93-percent extraction of manganese as manganese sulfate with consumption of 3.8 pounds of H2S04 per pound of extracted manganese. Two types of ore were treated in consecutive stages. The first are contained carbonate minerals of manganese and iron, both soluble in H2S04 solution. The second ore contained manganese oxide minerals, insoluble in straight acid solution but soluble in the ferrous sulfate solution obtained from treating the first ore. Leaching data were obtained by countercurrent percolation of coarse (minus-1/2-inch) ore particles at room temperature and by agitating minus-65-mesh ore particles in heated solution. Extraction of manganese and acid consumption were the same, but the percolation leach required 6 days compared with 1 hour for hot agitation. Variations in the size of ore particles treated, leaching time, acid concentration, solution temperatures, and method of applying ferrous sulfate solution to the oxide ore were studied. The effects of several reagents for removing iron from solution and improving filtration were also studied.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation a device was developed that permits the determination of the modulus of elasticity of the stress-relief cores obtained in the process of making in situ stress measurements. This determination is made by hydraulically loading the external surface of the stress-relief cores and by measuring the corresponding borehole deformation. The theoretical relationship between the borehole deformation, the applied pressure, and the modulus of elasticity is presented. Also, experimental results obtained from measurements on a simulated stress-relief core made of aluminum and on a limestone stress-relief core are given. Because of the symmetrical loading obtained with this device, the isotropy of the core material can be evaluated. With this device it is also possible to study the effect of eccentricity, that is, the effect within cores in which the inner hole is not coincident with the long axis of the specimen.

In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.

The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Montana Tech is investigating various methods of extracting and refining rare earth elements from mineral ores and concentrates. As part of this research, an elevated temperature “roasting” process has been evaluated as a means of converting the rare earth elements contained in various matrices to bromides as a pretreatment step in preparation for downstream rare earth element extraction and recovery operations. Laboratory and bench-scale experiments have been performed to assess the effects of varying temperature (150 to 400° C), time (1 to 4 h), and the ammonium bromide to rare earth oxide molar ratio (6 to 24) in the roaster charge. The results show that nearly complete bromination of the rare earth oxide is achievable when the roast is performed under optimum conditions.

Upon review of German World War II mining practices and equipment for planning coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines initiated research leading to the development of a pneumatic planer for anthracite. The results of tests are reported in this manuscript. It was demonstrated (1) that hard anthracite can be planed and (2) that the design and operating requirements are within the limits of present-day engineering and technology. For hard anthracite, the depth of cut indicated is 4 to 6 inches; with a chain pull of 20 to 40 tons and the speed of planer travel of 18 to 20 feet per minute, a 40-hp. motor will be required for the planer hoist. Compressed-air requirements for the planer will be 250 to 300 c, f, m, at 60 to 70 p. s, i. It was learned that the length of the 4 individual sections of the planer should not exceed that of the individual troughs of the armored chain conveyor (5 feet in this instance); otherwise, bottom coal will be left in synclines, and the planer will override the conveyor at anticlines. Pneumatic pushers should be operated from a separate compressed-air line fitted with a pressure regulator. Results indicate that additional development work is warranted.
