The treatment of aqueous CuSO4-H2SO4- As-Sb solutions by electrodialysis in order to separate and concentrate species of interest has recently been studied. Results show that it is possible to separate copper from arsenic in electrodialysis cells. The separation of copper from antimony is also possible. Transport rate ranges that could be achieved, depending on experimental conditions, are 0.2 to 0.6 mol per hour per square metre of membrane for copper, 0.65 to 2.8 for sulphate, and 0.016 to 0.03 for arsenic. Transport rates for antimony were inconclusive due to its very low solubility in the studied systems. Solution agitation and increasing temperature markedly increased the process rates. Advancements in this area require further work in both the thermodynamics (speciation) and kinetics of complex CuSO4- H2SO4-H2O systems, where impurities, other than As and Sb, and additives should be taken into account to gain a deeper understanding of the application of ED to copper electrorefining electrolytes

The evaluation of long-term performance of the wind turbine structures is essential in lowering the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) from wind sources. The required maintenance of the wind turbine foundation during the design-life time of the wind turbine may result in escalated cost, if not properly evaluated during the planning and designing phases. The degradation of the foundation soils’ stiffness due to the accumulation small plastic strains resulting from normal and/or extreme operating cyclic loading may result in escalating the O&M cost. The foundation’s stiffness degradation will result in a shift of the wind turbine system natural frequency, which may result in amplifying the vibrations generated at the hub. The anticipated shift of the wind turbine system natural frequency during the design-life time should be investigated through numerical simulations of the anticipated dynamic loading utilizing soil constitutive models that are capable of capturing the foundation stiffness degradation due to the accumulation of such small plastic strains. This study presents the validation of an element model that will be used to evaluate the performance of existing and/or proposed constitutive model.

The research presented here was initiated to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The problem of increasing the recovery rate of copper from these dumps is or great importance considering there are by conservative estimate in excess of fifteen billion pounds of copper located in dumps in the western United States. At this time, there is an increased interest in recovering copper from these dumps on a large scale. Large tonnages of low-grade material are being placed on the waste dumps of most copper mining operations in the western United States each day. The size of these dumps ranges from 5.5 million tons at Mineral Park, Arizona, to 4 billion tons at Kennecott's Utah operation (1). Leach solutions are recycled and contain ferrous and ferric sulfates. Large quantities of dissolved aluminum, magnesium and calcium salts may also be present. To this solution make up water is added to maintain the solution inventory and sulfuric acid is added for pH adjustment. Iron is introduced into the leach solution by the dissolution of the iron-containing sulfide and oxidized minerals present in the ore deposit. In addition to the iron from dump leaching, iron is also introduced during the precipitation process when the pregnant solution is passed over metallic scrap iron if cementation is used to reduce the copper in solution.

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OF THE ST. Introduction. THIS study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility-two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten ' and Levol,2 using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleabilitytests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi2O3, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusions of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows "If the protoxide of bismuth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

Two quartz types used in the silicon and ferrosilicon industry were heated to temperatures of 1600 and 1700 °C. The parameters varied were the temperature and the holding time at maximum temperature. The amount of quartz, cristobalite and intermediate amorphous phase were measured using XRD and the internal standard method. Type P showed a much larger ability to transform to cristobalite at lower temperatures than type A. Type P had a larger amount of alkali and alkaline earth impurities. This could have enhanced the transformation to cristobalite. For quartz type A the amount of cristobalite was larger at 1600 °C than 1700 °C. This can also be seen for some of the samples of type P at shorter holding times.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird's eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry's requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.

Since 1949, a total of 59 disposal wells have been installed in Canada to inject liquid wastes from refineries, mining operations and chemical plants into subsurface formations at an ever-increasing rate. Well depths range from around 600 feet to almost 5,500 feet; injection rates range from 0.5 (U.S.) gpm to more than 1,000 gpm for individual wells; wellhead injection pressures range from a slight vacuum to over 500 psi. Apart from strictly technical considerations of well design, the geological, hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions at the disposal site have a strong bearing on the safety and success of such operations. Prevailing hydrogeological conditions in large portions of the country do not allow safe subsurface disposal.

There are numerous mines throughout the world that have open pit highwalls developed partially or wholly in soil or soil-like materials. Soil-like materials are considered to include soils (either transported or residual) and highly weathered rock, which may have soil-like behavior. These materials generally have characteristics or material properties that vary considerably from those of moderately weathered or fresh rock. Given these differences, it is important to consider the characteristics of soil-like materials to design safe open pit slopes. In the design of open pit slopes in soil-like materials, it is important to recognize the behavior of these materials is strongly dependent upon their mineralogy, degree of weathering, cementation, stress history, depositional history, and presence of water. As a result, soil-like materials may contain one or more of the following characteristics that can have a significant effect slope stability and design: - Relict structural features (joints, faults, etc), - Sensitivity to moisture (both wetting and drying), - Zones of alteration with variable strength and drainage characteristics, - Zones of low permeability creating perched ground water conditions, and - Undrained and drained strain softening or strain hardening behavior.

Gas-liquid contacting in the packed bed is a common operation in metallurgical reactors. Research has shown that, unlike wetting flow, non-wetting liquid flows in the form of discrete droplets or rivulets. Thus, modeling of the liquid phase as a continuum is in contradiction to the observations. Also, for the non-wetting case, continuum models have failed to describe liquid flow path when the liquid source is a point source. The aim of the current work is to put forward a combined Lagrangian-Eulerian approach to model the liquid and gas flow in the packed bed. Liquid is assumed discrete and modeled using a force balance approach. Gas is assumed to be interpenetrating continua and modeled using k-emodel for turbulent flow. Structured packing is assumed and x- ray imaging technique is used to visualize liquid flow lines in the bed. Simulation results for liquid flow path compared with the experiments.

A laboratory-scale investigation of the effect of milling operation and catalyst addition ( K2CO3) on the partial reduction of low-grade pyrolusite ore pellets was carried out using coke as a reductant. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to understand the correlation between milling and catalyst addition parameters with the reduction temperatures. DTG analysis of pyrolusite pellet reduction showed three distinctive peaks associated with a three-step reduction mechanism (i.e., MnO2→ Mn2O3→Mn3O4→MnO). The results showed that the grinding and addition of the catalyst have a significant effect on lowering the MnO2 reduction temperature independently. But maximum reduction temperature drop is obtained when combining grinding and catalyst addition in this work. By 3 h milling and 10 wt% catalyst addition, the reduction temperatures were reduced by more than 200 °C compared to the raw ore pellets. These results obtained from the DTG analysis were further supported by XRD analysis of the reduced samples.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and obtained samples of ore from two properties in the vicinity of Bettie Mountain, Lander County, Nev. In addition, samples from three claims in the Carico Lake region, Lander County, Nev., were submitted by private interests. RS the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore dressing was investigated. The Black Bock property is 16 miles south of Valmy, Nev., and is owned by Western Alloys, Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah. The deposit is a replacement of sedimentary rock by manganese oxides. Ore occurs in two main ore bodies designated as the "upper bench" and "lower bench", which could be mined separately. Examining engineers obtained samples from each ore body, and laboratory experiments were made on each sample. The Black Eagle group of claims is in Lander County, Nov., about 43 miles southwest of Battle Mountain. Ore occurs as a replacement of manganese oxides in shale and chert. The 2-ton sample of ore used for laboratory testing was taken by a Bureau of Mines examining engineer from an adit that partly transversed a 28-foot bed of ore. The property is controlled by Western Alloys, Inc.
