A predicted increase in aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Browncoal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, was produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water, and charring at 1,150°C. The cost of processing is estimated tobe competitive with petroleum coke.Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value andthe particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement.Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char, and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch.The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell.Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity, and carbon consumptionon a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 per cent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum,coke alone.It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

"Load transfer distance (LTD) is simple in concept and usually evident in underground coal mines. Many people in the mining industry recognize LTD as the distance from the panel to where the mine ribs and pillars show evidence of renewed spalling, floor heave, or other effects of increased weight due to longwall mining or pillaring. Barrier pillars, in particular, are designed to shield mains and other relatively permanent facilities from this loading. LTD is also important in determining the extent and degree to which mining increases the load on pillars and ribs in the gate roads. Generally, a long LTD reduces loads in gate roads, but may require larger barrier pillar widths to protect mains or adjacent panels from excessive loads. Therefore, a long LTD may make it easy or difficult to meet various objectives of mine layout design . LTD reflects overburden geology in two ways: First, overburden that is weak and readily caves will limit both the amount and distance of load transfer. Second, stronger, stiffer, sandier, and more massive overburden increases both the amount and distance of load transfer. As such, LTD is central to coal mine layout design and calibration of numerical models that seek to anticipate these transfers of load during mining. However, the term does not have a consistent definition in the literature, and various instruments and observational techniques with varying sensitivities and thresholds have been used to indicate the onset of mining-induced stress increase and, subsequently, to determine an LTD. Consistency is important for meaningful comparison of ground response between mining sites and for accurate calibration of models.This paper adds to the body of observed and reported LTDs by presenting cases with relatively sandy and massive overburden at two western coal mines. These two cases include observation and measurement of LTD with multiple methods and provide insight into how distances reported relative to different criteria and instrumentation could be adjusted for comparison against a common base. This base is the criteria used by Peng and Chiang (1984) to determine their empirical equation. In one of these two cases, LTD was recently measured at a western U.S. coal mine (Mine A) to be approximately four times that calculated using the Peng and Chiang empirical equation. LTD measurements were examined using various instruments at Mine A and at adjacent Mine B. The measurements at Mine B showed that LTD was significantly greater than that calculated by the Peng and Chiang equation. Difficulties with BPC installation and fittings at Mine B permitted only ranges of LTD to be determined from some BPCs. Even so, the LTDs and ranges of LTDs determined were consistent with the LTDs determined at Mine A."

A paradigm shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results can invoke questions such as how much was produced, at what cost, and was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as pre-eminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and a concentration on productivity have been an essential part of these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. This situation presents an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now night offer some interesting opportunities for the Future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today's work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work Force. The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is one approach to defining, capturing and transferring this expertise. The WCPM suggests a paradigm shift, moving from a focus on products (quantity) to a focus on the process (quality). It also involves a slight change in the process -- a different way to think and work. Of great importance, it entails a belief and a commitment to people within the organization; a commitment to collect simple (but interesting) data; exploration for insightful ways to plot and integrate that data; and finally the search for creative methods to reinvest that knowledge back into the organization, that is, back into the work force. As a way of thinking, the WCPM subordinates information about how much is produced daily or how many were injured over a year's time to concern and detail for how the individual's and the work crew's performance contribute toward meeting organizational goals. Drawing upon the expertise within members of that work crew to address and solve operational problems is one approach for meeting organizational goals. This everyday focus on how we work is hypothesized by the WCPM to make the difference between a good section supervisor and the average one; an exemplar continuous-miner operator and the run-of-the-mill one; a mining crew that produces consistently high quantities, but, inadvertently, degrades the production of other units. The WCPM permits objective and reliable performance data to be collected. This data then can be used to define variability within tasks of work crew members; to relate observed variability to a cost consequence; and to more meaningfully analyze performance through the integration of traditional analytical tools, such as the production simulator, CONSIM, with a recommended behavioral approach, the WCPM. Basis for engineering test Most equipment selections and purchases involve a field trial test of the system. Technology is routinely bench tested at the manufacturer's facility, government agencies and the mine site. The WCPM suggests a similar, but more practical, method for testing the performance of a work system -a test for how technology is used (by people) at the work site. It implies learning from veteran mining personnel that have gone well "beyond the book." This approach to learning and to integrating training with everyday work life can help answer questions such as: What constitutes desirable perfor¬mance as, for examples, a shuttle-car operator, a miner operator or a bulldozer operator; what characterizes exem¬plary performance within the context of the work system, the technology and the work crew; how can investments in the worker he linked to measurable results within the organiza¬tion? This paper explores these questions and makes recom¬mendations for enhancing the cost-linkages between invest¬ments in people and the mine's monthly cost sheets.

"Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. "This paper reviews the status of computational modelling of a variety of common metals reduction processes, namely the blast furnace, rotary kiln and fluidised bed, and one new process not yet commercialised, namely smelting-reduction as in the HIsmelt Process. In each case, the last decade has seen the emergence of the capability to simulate the processes using multi-phase reacting computational fluid dynamics techniques. In some cases this capability is still in the process of being developed, and the next few years will see the maturing of the modelling techniques. As they become established, it will be possible to apply them to further refine the older technologies such as blast furnaces and rotary kilns, and assist in the optimisation, commercialisation and acceptance of the newer technologies such as fluidised bed and molten bath reduction. The development of a computational fluid dynamic model of bath smelting-reduction is described in some detail to illustrate how a large number of complex and interacting phenomena can be successfully simulated within a CFD framework. IntroductionPyrometallurgical reduction processes, such as the iron blast furnace, have become increasing more sophisticated through the centuries, so that today they are often highly efficient. There are continuing pressures, however, to refine existing processes and develop new ones. The imperatives are often economic, given that the long-term trend in the price of metals is always downward. In recent times, there has been the additional need to improve the environmental impact of metal production. Given that they almost inevitably require the use of carbon, metal reduction processes are large sources of greenhouse gases, and even a relatively small improvement in efficiency can be valuable in reducing CO2 production. Local environmental issues, such as the need to control of particulate emissions, are also driving incremental improvements in equipment.In addition to the economic and environmental drivers mentioned above, new process development is also being driven by the need to process new ores, and the need to produce unrefined metal in a form more compatible with alternative routes for downstream processing. An example of the latter is the production of DR! (Direct Reduced Iron) as a feed for EAF Electric Arc Furnace) in mini-mills.Further improvement of processes that have already been honed by continual plant experimentation over many years is not an easy task. To deliver further gains in efficiency, throughput, or product quality requires a highly sophisticated tool: one such tool· is computational modelling."

De otro lado, la ejecución de este sistema data desde 1975 a la actualidad, teniendo como antecedente la experiencia desarrollada en la mina Yauricocha de Centro Min- Perú y posibilitando su extensión a otras minas, cuyas condiciones se asemejan a la de Carahuara.

THE Fall Regional Meeting of the Institute, which has now for some years been held in cooperation with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, will be held this year at Joplin, Mo., in the heart of the great Tri-State district. This year the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association is joining in the meeting. The Society of Economic Geologists will also take part though not offering any papers. The district in which the meeting is held includes adjacent parts of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Out in the heart of a fertile prairie farming country, it is one of the major mining districts of the world. It produces normally approximately one-third of the zinc ore mined in the United States which is equivalent to nearly one-half the zinc since the concentrate has always been notable for the height of its grade. Even in the depressed business year 1930, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics credits the district with 434,460 tons of concentrates equal to 217,230 tons of zinc out of 1,503,095 and 576,630 respectively for the country as a whole. This was equal to about one-seventh of the world's output of zinc, more than that of any foreign country. In addition about 75,000 to 100,000 tons of lead is annually furnished by the same mines. Elsewhere we present a general description of the district prepared for this meeting by J. C. Heilman, a Lehigh graduate, who has spent the past eleven years there and has had charge of explorations for many of the companies.

But rich as these are, there is one thing greater; the sturdy character, energy, and integrity of its people, which will make these great resources an influence in the world's developments. Great as are these resources and the energy and integrity of our people, there is one problem of our .engineering, which I term human engineering, that is of far more importance than the creation of machines and methods, with which you have been so successful in the past. Of what value is the skillfully devised machinery, the complex process, unless manned and operated by people whose heart and soul are in sympathy with the work they are doing and who have before them the giving of a complete day's work for a day's pay?

Ultrasonic ranging sensors are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are normally small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances through moderate amounts of dust, smoke, and humidity, so they are well suited to underground mines. In the work reported here, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, researchers tested ultrasonic ranging sensors for their abiity to define rib line features for computer-aided navigation of underground mine mobile equipment. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of the individual rangers in a ring array produced by Denning Robotics of Wilmington, MA. The results showed that the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AMAX's Henderson Mine showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure the distance to mine features, including convex and concave corners and rib intersections. The results showed that when used properly, the ranger data are accurate enough for reliable mine vehicle navigation When used incorrectly, ultrasonic rangers do not provide the anticipated data. Therefore, this report explains the principles of ultrasonic range measurement, describes the ranger's strengths and weaknesses, and explains proper ranger use and data analysis.

"It has been estimated conservatively that the costs of wear damage and friction in the Canadian mining and mineral processing industry amount to over one billion dollars per year. These are mainly incurred through the repair or replacement of worn parts and production losses from related equipment downtime. The selection and application of the most appropriate wear protection components and systems, can thus have a very significant influence on productivity, profitability and global competitiveness.Details are presented of the wide diversity of materials used to counteract the varied and often complex wear attack mechanisms that occur in surface mining. The majority are various forms of steels and irons with generally very high hardness. However, they also include relatively soft elastomers and polymeric products.The main characteristics and applications of the different classes are reviewed. Case studies record significant performance improvements achieved through more judicious selections. Finally, some new developments which reduce maintenance charges by substantially increasing wear component life, are described."

Attempts have been made to electroplate titanium and zirconium from aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused-salt electrolytes. Metals were produced only in fused-salt electrolytes, the major product being sponge metal. All other electrolytes gave only partial reduction of the metal ions. Fused alkali borate electrolytes containing titanium salts gave titanium boride powders and coatings of poor adherence. Some of the problems encountered in the deposition of these metals and some of the aspects of titanium and zirconium chemistry involved are discussed. INTRODUCTION Titanium and zirconium are both relatively light, noncorrosive metals with both military and civilian uses. This has led to intensive investigations into the metallurgy of these metals. Both metals are high in the Electrochemical Displacement Series and are difficult to prepare in a pure state. At present they are prepared by reducing their chlorides, using magnesium. Electrolytic reductions have resulted in the preparation of fine powders or sponge of variable quality. It is believed that a good process of electroplating these metals on a baser metal would result in a very desirable product. The objective of the research summarized in this report was to investigate methods of electrodepositing these metals, with the idea of producing uniform, coherent plates. Most of the work was concentrated on titanium, the more abundant of the two metals. A system developed for titanium should be applicable to zirconium owing to their chemical similarity. Information gained from these experiments may also be applicable to the electro-winning of the metal.

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's second budget might be good for Canada's mining industry in the long run, but the budget raises a number of concerns for the industry in the near term. The budget papers suggest that the 25% resource allowance is not working as intended, and report that the Department of Finance will be reviewing this valuable allowance. The so-called ""large corporations tax"" rate will be increased. This annual tax, which is imposed on a corporation's capital even when the corporation is not in production, is particularly harmful to the mining sector.IntroductionThe Honourable Paul Martin, in his second federal budget, emphasized spending cuts and made only modest tax changes. Two channel polarity coincidence and polarity difference statistics are analyzed. The signal, common to both channels, consists of sinusoidal bursts where the exact frequency of the signal is nearly known, but other parameters such as amplitude, phase, and pulse starting time are unknown. The noise inputs are dependent, narrow band, Markov processes. It is shown that the performance depends not only on the signal uncertainties, but on the precise shape of the cross-correlation functions between the noise in-puts. By using two polairty difference statistics in addition to the polarity coincidence statistic, it is shown that the decrease in performance, as well as the cost of hard limiting due to correlated inputs, can be made small.

Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

"Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully under stood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). Twenty six samples of carbonaceous gold ores and associated rocks from outcrop and mine localities in northcentral Nevada were analyzed for concentrations of major. minor, and trace elements, total sulfur, and organic carbon. Q-mode factor analysis was used to define six distinctive carbonate, organic, and detrital associations of elements, and to group samples based on these associations. The trace metals that have clearly enriched the organic-carbon-rich samples are V, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Mo, although few of the samples could be considered "metal-rich" when compared to other organic-carbon-rich black shales. Rock-Eval pyrolysis was used to evaluate thermal maturity and hydrocarbon yield of the samples. Unfortunately, most samples were too thermally altered to be suitable for routine organic geochemical characterization of organic matter. The 813C values of organic carbon in rocks from different deposits have a trimodal distribution, but there is no clear distinction between the three groups of deposits that can be related to age, thermal history, or depositional environment.
