This paper presents the experimental investigation on the ultimate skin friction of batter piles. The model piles were pushed in medium dense sand deposits at different inclinations up to 30 with respect to the vertical and tested under axial compression loads. The decrease in the total skin resistance with increasing pile inclination can be explained in terms of the reduction of the ave­rage mobilized angle of friction between the pile shaft and sand. The analysis, which takes into account asymmetrical earth pressure distributions around the pile shaft, showed good agreement with experimental results.

In central Washington, six miles south of the small town of Vantage, the flow of the Columbia River is harnessed by the Wanapum Dam which is part of the Priest Rapids Hydroelectric Project owned and operated by Grant County Public Utility District (GCPUD). Extending more than 8,300-feet from bank to bank, the dam includes left and right earth embankments, left and right concrete gravity sections and a 10-unit powerhouse. Adjacent to the right embankment is a concrete gravity spillway featuring radial gates measuring 50-feet-wide and nearly 70-feet-high. In the early 1960’s when Wanapum Dam was built, these seven-story spillway gates were the highest in the world. In late February 2014, 50-years into its service life, during a routine maintenance inspection, observant workers noticed a slight misalignment in the roadway deck curbs and handrails located on top of the spillway. Further survey and inspection efforts uncovered a 65-foot-long by two- inch-wide crack that spanned the full length of Monolith 4. On discovering the extent of the damage, GCPUD initiated immediate drawdown of the reservoir to relieve pressure on the spillway monoliths. Wanapum Reservoir and the areas directly downstream of the dam were immediately closed, boat ramps and inlets were left completely dry, campsites were closed and boating activity was banned on the lake until further investigations and remedial procedures were in place and completed. An extensive root cause analysis ultimately led to the conclusion that errors in the initial design calculations and late changes to the final spillway design led to a condition that generated tensile stresses in the concrete at the upstream face, which over a period of 50-years resulted in the formation of a crack along a horizontal lift joint located about 85-feet below normal pool elevation. Further analysis showed that, although visible distress was found at Monolith 4, there was nothing preventing this issue from happening at other locations along the dam spillway. Although no visible cracking was found in the other monoliths, repair procedures for Monolith 4 would have to be replicated at the remaining monoliths.

"In Part 1 of this two-part paper the characteristics of mine disasters and their effects are presented with case studies from coal, metal and non-metal mines leading to an amplification of their causes and opportunities for control. The disasters discussed encompass those which threaten the health and the safety of miners and those which affect the general population. In Part 2 of the paper, which will be published in the November 1995 issue of Natural Resources Forum, the approaches to hazard and disaster control are reviewed with particular attention to laws and regulations to promote health and safety at the workplace, and general welfare in mining communities. Further, a systems approach to disaster control is outlined.The mining industry is one of the three basic industries the other two being agriculture, and wildlife and fisheries. It is the process of mining which makes available the riches of the earth - the energy and mineral resources - to benefit humanity. In fact the progress of the human race through the ages is indelibly attached to prowess in exploiting these riches. The stone, iron and bronze ages are markers not just of a time in history but achievements of monumental proportions in the mining and beneficiation of natural resources. Even in agriculture, the remarkable success stories are associated with the prudent use of mined products to enhance production and productivity. The significance of a thriving mining industry to the wealth and security of a nation is therefore unquestioned.Unfortunately, the public's image of the mining industry is often associated with the mining disasters which receive wide coverage in the local and national media. Mine disasters command tremendous attention because of their infrequent occurrence and the extent of human suffering involved. Whether it is an explosion or a fire, or the opening or closing of a mine, the lives of people are touched by the personal and societal impacts of these events.Courts of inquiry of mining disasters have often concluded that the disaster situation was ever present and could have been detected with diligent search. In addition human error has been identified as one of the most frequent immediate causes for the precipitation of the disaster. For the most part, then, mining disasters are caused by man."

"A phosphate beneficiation plant in Utah is using isotope-based Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology to analyze the entire slurry streams of the incoming feed and final product in order to adjust the flotation circuits in near real time and optimize the plant output. The plant has gained greatly improved visibility/control and has reduced product variability for improved profitability and product quality. This paper takes a look at the economics as well as application details and the difference this technology provides in a phosphate application. SIMPLOT PHOSPHATES INTRODUCTION Simplot’s Vernal, Utah Phosphate Mine and Mill are located in the northeast corner of the state in the Uinta Mountains along US Highway 191, eleven miles north of the town of Vernal. The phosphoric acid and fertilizer plant fed by the Vernal mine is located 94 miles Northeast of Simplot Phosphates in Rock Springs, WY.At the Vernal plant, loader and shovel mining to 85 Ton capacity trucks is done at an annual rate of 3.8 Million tons of ore. Run of mine ore is crushed in a mineral sizer to minus 14 inch diameter at the rate 11,500 tons a day and transported to the SAG Mill’s 130,000 ton surge stockpile by overland belt. ORE RESERVES The ore is a Phosphoria Formation of sedimentary rock type dating to the Permian Age. The ore body rests over a 25 mile area on Weber Sandstone from the Pennsylvania and Permian geologic period. Layers of Phosphate Rock can vary in thickness from 0.3 up to 2.1 feet, alternating with layers of Mudstone. The eastern edge of the ore’s body Panel “G” runs 16 feet deep with a feed grade of 21.5% P205 with lower MgO diluents of less than 2.79%."

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

Este estudo tem como objetivo entender qual a faixa de percentual de espaços vazios, %?, existem nos leitos encontrados na indústria de pelotização, e ainda a relação desta métrica com alguns parâmetros de controle operacional e ainda indicar testes na linha de produção para otimizar a produção de pelotas e também controlar os custos de produção.

The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. Jet grouting is a highly versatile ground modification technique that can offer significant commercial and technical advantages over traditional concrete pit underpinning applications. Despite these advantages, jet grouting remains an underutilized technique in the construction industry due to its perceived complexity, cost, and risk. When performed thoughtfully, underpinning by jet grouting offers significant safety and schedule advantages over traditional underpinning approaches. The New England construction market has seen a recent acceptance in the use of jet grout underpinning on congested project sites across a variety of subsurface conditions. The reduction of the cement batch plant footprint due to equipment advances has allowed the use of this technique in urban sites where its use would be previously infeasible. Furthermore, jet grout underpinning has been utilized for support of historic and sensitive structures with generally lower tolerance to settlement than is typically feasible with conventional pit underpinning. Robust, real-time geotechnical instrumentation monitoring systems have helped reduce the uncertainty and further expand the feasibility of jet grout underpinning applications. When properly designed and constructed by qualified and experienced jet grouting contractors, the flexibility of soilcrete for design and construction may be utilized to overcome the many inherent challenges which complicate underpinning and earth retention systems. INTRODUCTION The construction of buildings and infrastructure in our increasingly dense urban spaces often requires excavations below the elevation of existing structures immediately adjacent to the proposed work. Where a proposed excavation system encroaches into an existing structure’s zone of influence, additional measures, such as the construction of an underpinning or excavation support system, are required to safely excavate and minimize the impacts on the adjacent structures. Jet grouting is one method of underpinning that offers significant commercial and technical advantages over many other techniques. Though it was first used to the United States in the 1980s and has grown in popularity elsewhere, jet grout underpinning remains underutilized domestically due to its perceived cost and risk premium. Jet grouting has significant technical advantages over other underpinning methods due to its applicability in a wide range of soil types and its flexibility of design and installation. The jet grouting process is capable of limiting the movement of foundations during construction and excavation to lower thresholds than most traditional underpinning methods (Droof, Furth, & Scarborough, 1995). Its use for underpinning historic and sensitive structures with lower settlement criteria provides additional evidence to its technical utility. Through thoughtful design, adequate planning, and experienced installation, jet grouting can be an appropriate underpinning solution that can provide significant cost and schedule savings.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.

Mineral wastes from the mining, metallurgical and chemical processing industries in Canada amount to about 800 million tonnes annually. Such wastes often are largely non-metallic in composition and are of interest for traditional non-metallic mineral uses and applications. Mineral waste disposal and maintenance are costly; furthermore, these wastes may pollute groundwater, rivers and lakes. These factors and an increased appreciation of the potential utility of some mineral wastes have stimulated research in this area.

A large amount of polluted sludge is produced by a nonferrous metal factory after treating waste water with lime/ferrous salt. The concentration of arsenic in the dried sludge is high to 5.84%, a toxicity test is taken on the sludge according to GB5085.3-2007 and the extraction content is 15.75mg/L, which surpasses the arsenic extraction standard [As]=5mg/L, the sludge is categorized as hazardous waste. If put outside without disposal, it would be very harmful to environments. Here we report an optimum protocol to extract arsenic; S2- alkaline liquor is utilized to treat the arsenic sludge. At 85?, 10L 7% S2- liquor is added into 1kg dried sludge and the resulting mixture is stirred for 120min at 250r/min, then separated by centrifugation and the compressed waste residue dried naturally. The average arsenic content is 1.40mg/L, lower than GB5085.3-2007 Standard and arsenic-free residue is consistent with GB18598-2001 Standard, which can be bury safely. The extracted arsenic is transferred into copper arsensite for use as addictive in copper electrolysis and the waste water can be recycle after calcium is removed.

The adjacent towns of Rouyn and Noranda, centers of the Rouyn mining district of western Quebec, are 360 miles by air line almost duo north of Toronto. Rouyn is reached from the main lines of the Canadian National Railways and the Canadian Pacific Railway at North Bay, Ontario, by the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway and its subsidiary, the Nipissing Central Railway. Noranda is the southwestern terminus of a branch from the Canadian National Railway between Winnipeg and Quebec. The Rouyn mining district is a part of a mineralized zone that has been traced for a distance of 140 miles from Kirkland Lake in Ontario eastward into the Province of Quebec to the Pascalis district. From Rouyn the mine is 5 miler almost duo south over a gravel rend built by the company with assistance from the Province of Quebec.

Information regarding the pores or voids in reservoir rocks is vitally important in the scientific extraction of petroleum from natural underground reservoirs, and petroleum technologists concerned, with subsurface, conditions have devised various methods that give reasonably accurate information as to the porosities of oil and gas-bearing sands.5/ In this, work, several investigators have made use of the experience of the ceramic and other industries. The method of determining the effective porosity of oil sands described in this report falls within the general classification of gas-expansion methods. It was devised and developed at the United States Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., as a part of the research dealing with fluid and energy relations in reservoirs and improved oil-recovery methods. The apparatus and procedure are well adapted to the requirements of the Bureau, and the following detailed description has been prepared so that others may make use of the information. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of several hundred porosity determinations for oil sands in fields of 11 States.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

The New Almaden mine was discovered in 1824, and since that date production of quicksilver has exceeded 1,000,000 flasks. Because of this high production record, the New Almaden area was, upon passage. by Congress of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, immediately considered by the Bureau of Mines as a promising location for exploration. In 1941, the Federal Geological Survey undertook a survey of the entire district. R. R. Trengove, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary study for a project in 1942, and in August 1943 the Bureau, in close cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, began the development project described herein. The Bureau of Mines drilled 36 holes, totaling 6,807 feet of diamond drilling, along the contact between the serpentine and Franciscan, sandstones and other sedimentary formations. The ore bodies are found along this contact and occur in the carbonate-silica rock. This report briefly describes the location, history, and ore deposits of the property. The recent operations are outlined, and the work performed by the Bureau is explained in detail.

The concept of bolting mine roofs to prevent roof falls was initiated in the 1950's and was quickly accepted by the mining industry because it was inexpensive, effective and convenient. The principle regarding roof bolting were that: a) the loose and fragmented rocks were suspended from or clamped to more competent surrounding rock and b) generally, by clamping several layers of thin and laminated strata, a more competent monolithic beam is created.

The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.
