"In an Al-Mn alloy heat exchanger fin stock, the effect of annealing conditions for as-cast and 0.1%Zr addition on recrystallization behavior is investigated using metallurgical analysis. Refinement of post-brazed recrystallized grains in fin stocks with Zr addition are suppressed for long-time annealing. In 0.1%Zr fin stocks, there was a decrease in the number of fine a-Al(Mn,Fe)Si dispersoids for pinning of sub grain and grain boundary. In addition, relatively homogeneous distribution of Al3Zr dispersoids was observed with increasing annealing time in as-cast. Homogeneous distribution of Al3Zr dispersoids can have a major effect on pinning of sub grain and grain boundary during brazing heat treatment. The homogenous distribution of fine dispersoids prior to brazing heat treatment is effective in causing the suppression of refinement of post-brazed recrystallized grain structure in aluminum alloy fin stocks.INTRODUCTIONAl-Mn based alloys are widely used as fin stocks in automotive heat exchangers because of their superior mechanical properties, braze ability, sagging and so on. In particular, coarsening of recrystallized grain structure is beneficial to avoid erosion, and achieve excellent sagging resistance (Lee, Yoon, Kim & Jung, 2002). For resisting grain coarsening, the alloys should contain a dense and homogeneous distribution of fine dispersoids to retarder crystallization (Humphyreys& Hatherly, 2004). It has been demonstrated that addition of Zr to Al-Mn alloys can shift recrystallization to higher temperatures because of the distribution of fine Al3Zr dispersoids in matrix(Pokoba, Cieslar& Lacaze,2012). According to Tohma, Asanoand Takeuchi (1987), coarsely recrystallized grain structure was obtained in 3003alloy with Zr addition after heat treatment. However, fine Al3Zr dispersoids are usually heterogeneously distributed because of segregation during casting and low diffusion rate of Zr in aluminum. Therefore, a homogeneous distribution of Al3Zr dispersoids can be achieved through long-time precipitation annealing(Jia, Hu, Forbord& Solberg, 2008)."

Looking back over the last 150 years or so, it is not hard to see that electricity has been a primary force in shaping human development. It has been a basic ingredient in our industrial revolutions that simultaneously improved the productivity, working and living conditions within our farms, factories, hospitals, offices and homes. Today, it has become an essential part of our daily life and our future. Amazingly, we keep finding new ways to use electricity to make our lives more safe, comfortable and productive. It is a great success story of human ingenuity, achievement and development. Demand for electricity The convenience and value of electricity has not gone unnoticed by consumers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Energy Information Administration, 2009), electricity is the fastest growing form of energy in the world and during the next 20 years the world will likely consume twice as much of it as it does today. In 2008, almost 20,000 terawatt hours of electricity globally were consumed (Energy Information Administration, 2009). That is enough electricity to light up more than two million baseball stadiums or power more than 11 billion computers continuously for an entire year. The United States has the dubious distinction of be-ing the largest consumer of electricity in the world with enough power to provide each American with more than 3 kW of electricity ? that is about twice the power currently available to Europeans, eight times the power available to the Chinese and more than 25 times the power available to the citizens of India (American Coal Foundation, 2009).

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. Now that the price of sulfur has reached unexpected high levels, it is little wonder that sulfur from surface ores is again receiving attention. In most instances, it is advantageous for an ore to be at or near the surface. However, it is a distinct disadvantage for sulfur ore to be close to the surface because it precludes the use of the Frasch process. The Frasch process depends on the presence of at least 180 m of uniform overburden to allow pressure injection of superheated water into the sulfur-bearing formation to melt the sulfur. In the Frasch process, sulfur separates cleanly from the gangue underground and comes to the surface in a very pure form. Surface sulfur deposits, particularly those in the Western Hemisphere, exist largely due to volcanic activity, and sulfur separation from the gangue is a formidable technical problem. None of the surface deposits are large compared to some of the Frasch deposits, but at the present sulfur price, they are certainly of economic importance. From the turn of the century until 1975, the price of sulfur was for the most part $18-$28/t. However, with the price of sulfur now over $154/t, there are a variety of technical alternatives to consider for sulfur surface ore separation that may not have been economically attractive a few years ago.

Effect of Anionic Surfactant on Silica Particle Attachment at the Oil-Water Interface Controlling particle attachment is crucial where powdered solids come into contact with oil and water. Particles are trapped in a deep energy well at the oil-water interface, stabilising emulsions. Here it is shown that adding anionic surfactant causes dramatic changes to the bulk and interfacial structure of silica particle-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions. Exposing particle-stabilised drops to surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration enhances the rate and extent of creaming and flocculation. Mixing particle-stabilised emulsions with surfactant solutions causes drop fragmentation. As the surfactant concentration increases, the average drop size decreases and particles are displaced from the interface during the mixing process.

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.

"This paper considers the duty cycle of an electric cable shovel and correlations with measured passive seismic responses of the underfoot oil sands material in-pit. It has been observed that the cyclic activity during operation of any shovel in the oil sands environment causes the material to deteriorate and provide a less than ideal footing for this large item of equipment, whose dead weight approaches 1500 tons with a footprint of merely 75 sq. yd. Consequences are manifested in the form of carbody and side frame cracks, and associated downtime, maintenance activity, cost, and subsequent loss of availability.The objective of these considerations, as part of the Oil sands-Equipment Interaction Program (OsEIP), currently a joint venture between Syncrude Canada Ltd., James Progithin International (JPi) Ltd., Caterpillar Inc., P&H MinePro and the University of Alberta, is to identify and provide feedback to the manufacturer and end user of adverse shovel-ground conditions. This would enable the manufacturer to incorporate greater knowledge into the design process and the end user to direct operations in an enhanced proactive maintenance stance."

"Rare Earth water dregs is the drained waste dregs, which contains over 0.2 percent thorium dioxide and about 6-10 percent di-Rare Earth trioxide, which is beyond the standard of draining off that China governments set, so that the Rare Earth water leach dregs must be sacked and laid down in storehouse, which costs lots of money. It is a pity that the RE and thorium compounds very useful elements in industry are discarded. A lot of work must be carried out so that this resource was fully developed.In this paper, four separation techniques of recovery Rare Earth minerals and enrichment thorium element and reduction thorium content of drained dreg for the different test samples of Rare Earth water leach dregs which is radioactive waste dregs got from diverse locus are studied, respectively, and the separation characteristic and the separation process are described, using several combination processes of classification and gravity and flotation separation which were prepared according to the characteristic of test samples and technology. The test results show that the combination processes are the more remarkable separation techniques and the flotation reagents used in test can be applied to utilizing synthetically radioactive waste dregs. Through the combined technique process, three parts of products were obtained, namely, Rare Earth concentrate collected, the thorium product enriched and a large amount of the waste dregs product that can be directly drained and the total quantity is 50%-60%. In order to determine optimum technical condition, the effect factors of separation process were investigated in the test."

MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) I. LOCATION AND EXTENT. THE Caddo oil-field, shown in Fig. 1, is located in Caddo parish, northwestern Louisiana. The known producing territory of oil is covered by townships 19 N, 20 N, 21 N, 22 N, and ranges 15 and 16 W., shown in Fig. 2. The center of the field may be taken as Oil City, 24 miles north of Shreveport, on the Kansas City Southern railway. Shreveport is the second largest city in the State, and is the connecting point of five rail-road-lines. Drilling at the present time, however, is going on all over northern Louisiana, especially in Caddo and the neighboring parishes. II. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT. Natural gas escaping at the surface is found at numerous places in northwestern Louisiana. At Shreveport, the plant of the Shreveport Ice & Refrigerating Co. has been lighted by natural gas for 20 years. The well was drilled for water, but was abandoned on account of the gas. A test well, put down in 1905 near the western limits of Shreveport, was driven to 1,650 ft., and encountered indications of gas and oil at various depths, but did not succeed in finding enough to be profitable. Attention was first attracted to the Caddo field in 1895 by indications in water-wells from 40 to 60 ft. deep, in which the pressure of natural gas was noticeable. This indication of gas in a shallow well led to the drilling of the first well in the Caddo field, the old Savage Brothers & Morricell, or the Caddo Lake Oil and Pipe Line No. 1. The rig for this well was erected in May, 1904, and drilling began in June, 1904. The well was bailed Mar. 23, 1905, with a small amount of oil. It was deepened July, 1905, and converted into a "gasser " Jan. 3, 1906. It was abandoned January, 1907. Physical and chemical methods were investigated to tower thorium levels in Eneabba Ilmenite from the natural levels of 180-500 ppm to give Becher Process synthetic rutile with less than 100 ppm thorium. Chemlcal treatments, but not physical separations were successful. A pilot plant trial of a sodium hydroxide leach (25M NaOH at 75°C and 40 wt% solids for Ih) followed by a sulphuric acid leach (3M H2S04 at 90°C and 60 wt% solids for 211) confirmed that thorium could be removed to below 100 ppm. "IntroductionSafety and training in the mineral industry will always be issues that are hotly debated and discussed.The nature of the mining industry, where people and equipment work in close quarters deep below the earth's surface, attracts a great deal of public attention and concern, especially in the areas of safety and related training activities. This concern has been carried over into the mineral processingsector which is, of course, a vital part of the mining industry.It is therefore imperative that mining people closely examine the policies, procedures and programs presently in place to determine if they meet the needs of the industry and its employees. Everyone stands to benefit: the companies, employees and the mineral industry as an important segment of the Canadian economy.Phrases such as ""Safety First"", ""Safety is Number One"", have a role to play in industrial safety programs but in reality are a shallow approach to the magnitude of the challenge. An industry must produce its products in a cost-effective way, with good employee relations. None of these objectives can be successfully achieved unless accompanied by good safety performance. Accidents both on and off the job result in very poor efficiency, high costs and poor employee relations.This chapter, Safety and Training, outlines those major areas that the author believes are necessary components for an industrial safety, health and training program, but are not all inclusive. More will surely be added as additional problem areas requiring attention are identified. The major sections discussed are: Development and Implementation of a Safety Program; Occupational Health; Training; and Audit Procedures.The author has drawn on his experience as both a mill superintendent, mine manager and superintendent of safety, health and training. The approach developed at loco Metals Manitoba Division is frequently used in this paper with examples and excerpts to better illustrate the subject, but does not represent the full scope of programs in place in the Division."

THE UTILIZATION by the Bureau of Mines of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in connection with coal research has led to some basic improvements in methods, including a calibration method, a quantitative assessment of infrared spectral energy sources, and the development and perfection of infrared filters and cells. The adoption of a micropipet method to flush organic samples into absorption cells permits the investigation of vapors from organic liquids and the identification of volatile organic compounds. The spectral method has been used to investigate the infrared spectra of metal chelates, the charge-transfer complexing properties of aniline and nitrobenzene, an infrared method for determining the presence of methane in coal-mine air that has been adopted for use in enforcing the regulations of the National Coal Mine Safety Act, and atmospheric pollution including smog and odor-causing oxidation and decomposition of organic materials. Correlation of spectra and structure of organic compounds, particularly aromatics, was studied.

In open stope mining borehole deviation is one of the main factors affecting the blasting results. Though previous research has identified some actual deviation patterns, these studies are unable to relate the hole deviation pattern with the blasting results and therefore it is not possible to modify the design or take remedial measures based on the prediction of the blasting results. An alternative to the conventional method for borehole surveying is the in-hole probing techniques. With their inherent errors, it is important to evaluate these surveying systems under conditions of different mine sites. The lack of available assessment methods has limited the application of these techniques. In this paper some of the characteristics of the actual hole deviation pattern are discussed based on data from surveying production holes in six stopes. A method of predicting the blasting results is proposed by considering the borehole deviation pattern. Based on the prediction stope design can be modified or further surveying is carried out to improve the blasting results. The tolerable error is introduced to relate the surveying error with the drilling pattern and therefore it is possible to assess various in-hole-surveying techniques.
