This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

"The flow field in a rotary kiln, used in an iron ore pelletizing process, was investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. The model is isothermal, downscaled and simplified. The objective was to examine the possibility of capturing the unsteady motion of the flame seen in the real kiln. The results from the simulations were compared with recorded images of the real process. The results demonstrate the possibility of quickly getting an overview of the flow field in the kiln. The main, unsteady behavior of the flame was captured. The model may be used as a tool in the ongoing work of improving and optimizing the pelletizing process.IntroductionThe pelletizing process, in which the crude iron ore from a mine is upgraded into pellets, is a process involving large amounts of hot air flowing in complex geometries. Flow control is a crucial factor in this process to maintain high pellet quality. The rotary kiln is one of the last steps in the pelletizing process, and this is where the pellets are sintered to increase their strength and metallurgical properties. The kiln burner produces a flame that supplies the entire pelletizing process with the necessary heat.Kiln burner flames are large diffusion flames arising from a jet of fuel from the burner issuing into a concentric confining cylinder with a surrounding coflow of air, called secondary air. To enable combustion, the secondary air needs to be entrained into the fuel jet. This mixing of the fuel and air is the slowest step in the combustion process and therefore affects the efficiency of the combustion. The rate of entrainment depends on the momentum ratio between the burner jet and secondary air. The higher the momentum ratio, the faster the entrainment rate and, consequently, the faster is the fuel/air mixing.The kiln of interest in this study differs from kilns used in other industrial processes in both geometry and operating conditions. A distinguishing feature is the large amount of secondary air being induced through the kiln hood and then transported to earlier stages in the process as air or exhaust gas. The secondary air therefore has a substantial momentum, implying that the resulting flow field has a significant impact on the mixing and combustion process in general and the flame shape and stability as well as combustion efficiency in particular. A systematic study of the factors influencing the dynamics of the flow field in the kiln, neglecting the combustion, is therefore justified."

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

O Sistema de Controle de Equipamentos de Radiofrequência (SCER) nasceu a partir de uma demanda da área de Telecomunicações com o objetivo de minimizar as interferências dos diversos equipamentos emissores e receptores de ondas de rádio existentes em todo o perímetro da Usina ArcelorMittal Tubarão. Anterior ao sistema, todo o cadastro, controle e alocação destes equipamentos era feito em planilha Excel, mantida pela área de telecomunicações. Todas as verificações para liberação da instalação/configuração do equipamento a ser instalado eram feitas manualmente, com auxílio de equipamento analisador de espectro de frequência. Com a implantação do SCER, as fragilidades do controle manual foram supridas, trazendo o diferencial de cálculos automáticos de interferências feitos pelo sistema em função dos parâmetros de ajuste de cada equipamento, da sua abrangência e localização geográfica. Através de uma interface Web, os usuários podem não só controlar os equipamentos, fabricantes, modelos e aplicações, como também visualizar em mapas, com georreferenciamento, as áreas da Usina em que estes equipamentos atuam, bem como alterar os polígonos e perímetros de alcance e abrangência das áreas.

The Federal Bureau of Mines contacted 29 organizations--mine maintenance departments and equipment manufacturers--concerning service experience and construction of diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers. Scrubbers are used primarily on mobile diesel-powered mining equipment subject to 30 CFR 36. Because the scrubbers cool exhaust gas and act as flame arresters, their failure would compromise safety in underground mines. Scrubber maintenance problems and frequency and modes of failure were identified, and construction materials and techniques were evaluated. Three failed scrubbers were randomly selected from two cooperating mines, and their modes of failure were determined. In conjunction with failure analyses, mine water and scrubber water solution samples were chemically analyzed to characterize corrosive properties. Sludge and mineral deposits and different types of corrosion and metal fatigue were identified as problems leading to scrubber failure. The corrosion process is explained; maintenance practices, construction materials, and manufacturing methods that could be used to reduce premature failures and allow longer effective scrubber life are identified; and basic changes in scrubber design are suggested. If type 304 stainless steel is used throughout the scrubber and regular maintenance is performed, long, dependable service can be expected. Other materials such as 304L, 316, or other more exotic steel alloys may be necessary under certain conditions.

The salt lake brines that lithium is extracted from have high chloride levels making the brine very corrosive to stainless steel extraction column internals. This is a significant problem in column scale-up to industrial production. Two types of corrosion-resistant ceramic internals, the hybrid ceramic internal and ceramic plate, were designed and tested under pilot conditions for future industrial application in this field. The hydrodynamic results (Yi et al. Ind Eng Chem Res 56 (4):999–1007 (2016), [1]) show that holdup of hybrid ceramic internal is higher than that of ceramic plate by around 50%, while Sauter mean diameter when using the hybrid ceramic internal is smaller than when using the ceramic plate by around 30%. This results in a larger mass transfer area, hence better mass transfer efficiency for the hybrid ceramic internal. Axial dispersion and mass transfer parameters are also examined (Yi et al. Ind Eng Chem Res 56(11):2049–3058 (2017), [2]). The results show that the column with hybrid ceramic internals has 50% lower axial dispersion coefficient and 50% higher mass transfer coefficient, leading to higher mass transfer efficiency. The transfer unit height of the column using hybrid ceramic internals can be as low as 0.2 m, showing very good efficiency. This is promising for near-future applications. Two-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been developed for the two columns with ANSYS FLUENT commercial software. CFD successfully predicts the higher holdup and lower axial dispersion coefficients for the hybrid sieve plate pulsed column as measured in the experiments, and the cause for the difference in performance has been explained with information from CFD.

"Abstract: The use of micropiles has greatly increased the last twenty years, including applications involving low capacity micropile networks, seismic retrofitting, underpinning of existing foundations and high capacity foundations for new structures. This paper presents a field study of the behaviour of single hollow core micropiles in firm to stiff lean clay. Eight micropiles were installed using hollow bars (76 mm OD and 48 mm ID) with air/water flushing technique and advanced to a depth of 5.75m: six micropiles were installed using 228 mm (9 in) drill bit and two micropiles were installed using 178 mm (7 in) drill bit. All micropiles were instrumented with linear potentiometers to measure the vertical displacement of the micropile head and vibrating wire strain gauges to measure the axial strain at three points along the micropile length. Twelve full scale tests were conducted on the eight micropiles, four monotonic compression, four cyclic compression and four tension tests. Only the results of micropiles tested under monotonic compression is presented in this paper. The full scale load tests and a comparison of the performance of the micropiles with 228 mm and 178 mm drill bit are presented and discussed in terms of load-displacement curves, bond strength and tip resistance. The results showed that the proposed values of bond strength in FHWA give a conservative design of the hollow core micropiles. The micropiles constructed with 228 mm drill bit performed marginallybetter than the micropile with 178 mm drill bit in terms of the ultimate capacity.IntroductionMicropiles have been defined in a variety of ways, but can universally be classified as small diameter (less than 300mm), bored, and grouted in place piles (FHWA, 2005; Bruce et al., 1999; and Scherer et al., 1996). They can sustain axial (compression and tension) and/or lateral loads. Dr. Fernando Lizzi used micropiles in 1952 for underpinning of historic buildings damaged during World War II (Bruce D. A., 1988). Since then, micropile applications have expanded rapidly to include underpinning for existing foundations, in situ reinforcement, and seismic retrofitting and foundations for new construction. In particular, micropiles have graduated from use in low-capacity micropile networks toapplications as single high-capacity foundation.Micropiles capacity is affected by the construction technique, which involves drilling, placing reinforcement, and placing or pressurizing the grout. For example, the drilling method influences the degree of bonding between the grout and the ground, and the placement of reinforcement and the choice of grouting method have an impact on the development of the bonding. Bruce et al. (1997) showed that grout/ground bond is most affected by the grouting method. Based on the type of pressure applied during the grouting process, micropiles are classified as follows (FHWA, 2005): Type A: grout is placed under gravity pressure only using either sand-cement mortars or neat cement grout. Type B: pressures typically in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1 MPa are applied in order to inject the neat cement grout into the drilled hole while the temporary drill casing is withdrawn. Type C: involves two-step process; neat cement grout is first placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only as in type A, and prior to the hardening of this primary grout, a similar grout is then injected via a preplaced sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of at least 1 MPa. Type D: like type C, this type is a twostep process: neat cement grout is placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only (but pressure could be applied in some cases), additional grout is injected via a sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of 2 MPa to 8 MPa once the primary grout has hardened. In some cases, a packer is used inside the sleeved pipe, enabling specific horizons to be treated. Recently, Type E micropile is proposed, which involves"

"The Pulp Chemistry Monitor (PCM) has been installed and operated in a number of concentrators in Australasia, and has produced some very interesting results. PCM measures the pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of process streams within a concentrator continuously and in real time.In the example presented in the paper the cleaner feed pulp chemistry is measured, and related back to changes in the mineralogy as well as variations in metallurgical response. For example, a decrease in Eh and dissolved oxygen as well as an increase in the oxygen demand. These changes in the pulp chemistry appear to coincide with increases in the feed grades, probably higher pyrite grades. Further, these variations in pulp chemistry and feed mineralogy have a negative impact on the concentrate grade and recovery.The implication is that if the pulp chemistry is monitored it is possible to predict changes in the mineralogy of the system, and from this the metallurgical response. Further, the changes in pulp chemistry can be used in a control system to counter the changes in mineralogy and maintain the metallurgy.IntroductionIt has long been recognized at a fundamental level that the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals is dependent on the pH and Eh of the system (for example: Tolun and Kitchener, 1964; Woods, 1976). However, measuring pulp chemical parameters within an operating concentrator has had limited attention. Woodcock and Jones (1970a and b) were among the first to actually collect data from operating plants. Jones and Woodcock (1984) identified some of the chemical complexities of flotation pulps, and noted that most concentrators already operate at high levels of metallurgical performance but there was still considerable scope for improvement. These gains would, in part come from more effective chemical control. In the same volume, Healy (1984) discussed metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation, redox chemistry and how the surface chemistry of sulphide minerals can be influence flotation behaviour. The impact of grinding environment on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a complex polymetallic sulphide ore is discussed by Forssberg and Subrahmanyam (1993). Their work essentially contrasts the pulp chemical and flotation performance of pulps ground with conventional ferrous grinding media to a fully autogenous system. The data suggested that the reduction or removal of iron hydrolysis contamination from the system could have a positive influence on flotation behaviour, and perhaps the first stage of “controlling” the chemistry of the system should be in the grinding circuit. Grano et al (1995) demonstrated that the collection of pulp, solution and surface chemical data could identify weaknesses within a concentrator, and from these data develop, test and implement solutions that improved the process. Greet et al (2006) showed that the pulp chemical trends observed through primary grinding and rougher flotation circuits of most sulphide flotation concentrators are approximately the same. There are differences in the magnitude of various pulp chemical parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand) as a result of variations in the feed mineralogy and processes employed. Further, it was noted the Eh shifted to more reducing values of the ten days measurements were collected, and this change could be traced to an increase in the iron sulphide content of the feed. Metallurgically, this resulted in an increase in nickel recovery through the recovery of nickeliferous iron sulphides, and a decrease in nickel concentrate grade."

"In order to establish some links between the 22 specimens found on the site of Les Forges du St. Maurice, their slag inclusions have been analyzed by electron microprobe. Comparison between their contents of various specific oxides allowed us to segregate them into two major groups and even to isolate two sub-groups possibly characterized by some equilibrium between their oxides and/or the type of ores used.In all probability, limes/one coupled systematically with a soil rich in hydrated aluminum silicates was used as a flux.Based upon the existence of a pseudo equilibrium between the slag and the metal, the elaboration of the bulk of the specimens can be ascribed to the indirect rather than the direct method whereas the process temperature can be estimated at at least /400°C.RESUMEDans le but d'etablir des liens entre les 22 objects provenant des Forges du St-Maurice, leurs inclusions de scories ont été analysées par microsonde. Heap leach operations provide a low-cost method for recovering gold, silver, and copper metals from low grade ore materials. The processed ore materials are stacked in controlled lifts on a lined pad facility for heap leaching. A controlled barren solution is applied to the heap ore surface by sprinkler or drip emitter irrigation, and ore metals are leached into the solution for collection and extraction in plant process facilities. The leach pad and solution collection facilities are lined with impervious materials for containment of all process solutions. The liner system typically includes a composite geomembrane and clayey soil liner with a protective drain cover fill to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying groundwater conditions. This paper discusses the types of pad liner systems currently used by the mining industry and the "good, bad, and ugly" lessons learned in engineering practice over the last 10 years in the design and construction of heap leach pads.

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 72% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 69% of US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The other 31% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. The project involved design, construction, and testing of hydraulic models of culverts, decant and open channel spillways which are typical drainage structures used for protecting mine waste embankments. MSHA (The Mine Safety and Health Administration, U. S. Department of Labor) made a motion picture of the tests. Tests results and products in the forms of graphs, tables and films, demonstrate the principles and factors which govern the function and performance of the three types of drainage structures.

In the framework of the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation project, BAUER Foundation Corp. had been tasked with the installation of 17.5 miles (28 km) of seepage cutoff wall distributed over three task orders.  The cutoff wall is 50 to 65 feet (15 to 20 m) deep and minimum 24 inches (0.61 m) wide. Beside numerous connections to existing concrete structures and existing cutoff wall segments, the work included the connection of the cutoff wall to three utility pipes at pump station S-131: one 96-in (2.44 m) diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and two 48-in (1.22 m) steel pipes. The cement deep soil mixing method of Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) has been used to install the wall.  The contract documents stipulated the use of jet grouting for all pipe connections.  The large diameter and the deteriorated state of the CMP caused the contractor question whether it would be feasible to meet strict contract requirements for the interface utilizing jet grouting methods. The contractor prepared a value engineering cost proposal (VECP) to avoid jetting around the CMP. The proposal included an excavation shored using sheet piling and soldier piling, partial removal of the CMP, jet grouting below the CMP, reconnection of the CMP, backfilling with controlled low strength material (CLSM), jet grouting around the steel pipes and finally CSM tie-ins into the CSLM block and jet grout cutoff wall. The paper introduces the project, the existing conditions, the geotechnical site conditions and the requirements specified by USACE.  It describes the pursued approach, the equipment used, and auxiliary measures needed to facilitate the approach.  Strength and permeability results are presented. The paper also discusses challenges encountered and related lessons learned.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.
