It was the purpose of this contract to conduct research in several different areas of instrumentation used to determine the quantity of respirable dust in the mining atmosphere. One area of research was in evaluation of instruments including several respirable dust monitors, several types of photometers, and a QCM cascade impactor. An instrument evaluation chamber was developed to aid in evaluating the instruments in a dust atmosphere. Another area of research was investigations into new instrumentation concepts, such as a virtual impactor/photometer instrument, a new optical device which can be used as either an optical particle counter or photometer, a new personal respirable sampler, which employs an impactor instead of a cyclone as a preclassifier, and the development of a new cascade impactor, which deposits the particles uniformly on the impaction plate. Another area of research included the use of many of these instruments in two field studies, including a silica sand plant and a tungsten mine.

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand/shale ratio, and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley, and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam conglomerate units are discussed.From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature, was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin.The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, supplied most of the coarse detritus (including the conglomerates) to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern- each show development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure.Evidence of ill situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.The unusual character of this coal basin, in particular the very coarse units, is stressed, despite the presence of many "normal "coal basin features.

PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104º at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. Work started on the building of the Amsterdam Concert Hall in 1880 by driving over 2000 wooden piles of 13 m on which foundation-beams out of wood and brickwork were made. During construction the design was changed. This was due to the latest German developments, requiring double walls instead of single, so that the space in between could be used for ventilation and heating. Therefore the pile load, originally designed at approximately 100 kN, increased even to 170 kN for some piles, causing settlements and unacceptable cracks in the brickwork. Settlements of up to 18 cm were measured. In 1985/1986 around 400 vibration-free Tubex-displacement-piles were installed under the Concert Hall, with a shaft of 0355 mm, a pile shoe of 0560 mm and a pile length of approximately 18 m. After these Tubex piles had been installed they took over the complete weight of the whole building, thus eliminating further settlements and damage. 95% of all the construction activities took place while the concerts went on. The chosen solution also made it possible to create a new basement under the Concert Hall as an extension for dressing-rooms etc.

The deep level gold mining environment is characterized by high stresses that give rise to intense mining induced fracturing of the rock mass surrounding the stopes. In a geologically disturbed region where the intensity of mining induced stress fracturing is high, the degree of faulting and/or the frequency of other geological features such as joints may pose serious strata control problems. Unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities namely, faults, joints and mining induced stress fractures tend to divide the immediate hangingwall into unstable keyblocks which, if not supported, may result in extensive falls of ground. Effective support strategies therefore demand detailed investigation of the predominant inclinations and orientations of these discontinuities. The orientations and inclinations of these discontinuities surrounding a deep level stope have been measured. The results are projected onto the lower hemisphere of a stereographic net to determine the factors that contribute to the falls of ground in the stope. The analyses reveal that unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities divides the immediate hangingwall into unstable wedges that may become dislodged between support units.

The failure of the immediate roof or "roof skin" between installed primary and secundary roof supports causes hundreds of injuries and, on average one or two fatalities each year in U.S. underground coal mines. Conventional roof supports cannot cover enough roof area to adequately control these relatively small, but very dangerous rock falls. The 2006 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident database lists a total of 542 ground fall injuries, including 10 fatalities. An analysis of the database suggests that 434 of the injuries and three of the fatali­ties can be attributed to roof skin falls (See Figure 2). The key to controlling falls of the immediate roof or roof skin is maximizing the area of roof coverage ilnd confining these relatively small loose rocks. Roof screen offers maximum coverage of the immediate roof. Depending on the size and configuration of the screen panels, coverage of up to 100% of the roof area is possi­ble. Screen also offers a first line of defense for machine operators working in the face area by confining or deflecting small rocks that can come loose during mining or roof bolt installation. Figure 1 shows an example of the protection screen provides dur­ing bolt installation. Although the benefits of screen are well-known, mining com­panies in some areas of the U.S., mainly Northern Appalachia and the Illinois basin, are not convinced that roof screen is the best tool for dealing with roof skin control issues. The logistics of material handling, possible ergonomic injuries to workers, and the costs associated with installation are delaying the acceptance of screen as an on-cycle roof support tool. Other mines however, have concluded that installing roof screen can be cost-effective when compared to the cost of lost time accidents, training of replacement workers, or returning to already developed entries for the cleaning and rebolting process.

In the submerged arc production of ferromanganese, sillicomanganese and ferrochromium, the coke bed characteristics play an important role. The basic mechanisms of electric current conduction in the coke be dare not yet fully understood, but important parameters are the material resistivity of coke and the contact resistance between the coke particles. Preliminary tests indicate that the contact resistance is of great importance to the bulk resistance of the coke bed. An apparatus measuring the material resistivity and contact resistance of carbon materials has been developed. Both graphite and industrial coke have been tested. The material resistivity tests were performed on single particles to ensure that the effects of pores and cracks were included and the contact resistances were excluded. Two geometries were tested to obtain the contribution of the contact resistance to the total resistance of two connecting particles. The tests were performed in an inert atmosphere at temperatures and current levels found in industrial submerged arc furnaces. The results show that the method has a satisfactory reproducibility. It was found that the contact resistance is about 10 times higher than the resistance of the material when two particles are in perfect contact and that the resistivity of SSAB coke is more than 10 times higher than that of the graphite at room temperature, but with increasing temperature the difference decreases. For SSAB coke the general trend is that both the resistivity and the contact resistance decrease with increasing temperature.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

The investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram is part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to investigate rare-earth alloys. Data from the investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram revealed a single eutectic system with very limited terminal solubility and three intermediate phases. The eutectic point occurs at about 85 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 850° C., extends from the compound Fe2Gd to 99-plus percent gadolinium. Very little solubility of the solid phases in each other was observed. The three intermediate phases, FegGd, Fe3Gd, and FeaGd, melt incongruently at peritectic isotherms at 1,320°, 1,150°, and 1,080° C., respectively. The crystalline systems of the three phases were determined as follows: FegGd, hexagonal; Fe3Gd, hexagonal or rhombohedral; and FeaGd, face-centered cubic. No lowering or raising of the alpha-gamma iron transformation at 910° C., the gamma-delta iron transformation at 1,388° C., or the gadolinium transformation at 1,262° C. was observed. The principal methods used in determining the iron-gadolinium phase diagram were melting-point determinations, thermal analyses, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Melting, heat treating, and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or under a helium atmosphere because of the avidity with which oxygen combines with gadolinium at elevated temperatures. A few hardness values were determined, but they had no part in the derivation of the phase diagram. No other mechanical properties were determined.

The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

Air was blown into the molten slag as oxygen resource during the dynamic oxidation. It was found that the oxidation is not only in favour of Ti components into perovskite phase, but also the increase of slag temperature and decrease of slag viscosity during the dynamic oxidation promote the precipitation and growth of perovskite phase, average crystal size of perovskite phase is 48 µm. The experimental result realizes the selective enrichment of Ti components and coarsening of perovskite phase, perovskite phase can be separated by mineral dressing method.

Over the last decade, instrumentation has been developed that allows the application of seismic reflection methods to groundwater and engineering problems. At the Geological Survey of Canada, we have been developing and testing shallow reflection techniques for mapping the bedrock topography and structure within the overburden. We have attempted to develop methods which can be implemented with a minimum investment in equipment and computing capabilities. The data are recorded on a l&channel engineering seismograph, using a single high-frequency geophone per channel, and a hammer or in-hole shotgun (“Buffalo gun”) as the seismic source. Processing and display of the data can be accomplished on an Apple II+ or IIe microcomputer and an Epson wide-track dot-matrix printer.

What prompted the merger of the two long-established American Mining Congress/National Coal Association (AMC/NCA) groups that combine the coal, hard-rock, industrial- and agricultural-minerals sectors of mining? Both associations have been facing similar stresses for several years - structural changes in their respective industries, the changing personality and role of government and well-financed and organized opposition groups. In 1993, the AMC board of directors undertook efforts at reorganizing the association. One board member, who serves on both boards, suggested it might be time to give serious consideration to merging the organizations. This is an idea that had been discussed more or less informally at least three times during my tenure at NCA. Negotiations toward a merger began after that and were consummated in February of this year.

The only simple sulphide mineral of antimony of importance is stibnite, SbS3, containing 71·8% antimony when pure. It is lead-grey, has a densityof 4·5 to 4·6 and melts at 546°C. It is both friable and sectile (Hardness 2 on Moh's scale) and, as a result, slimes very readily during milling.It is commonly associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite other minerals occurring with stibnite in minor quantities are chalcopyrite, galena, and scheelite. The latter mineral occurs in sufficient quantity at the Yellow Pine Mine, Stibnfte, Idaho, to justify the production of a scheelite concentrate.Stibnite mayor may not contain gold. Other minerals such as pyrite or arsenopyrite may contain gold. At Wiluna at the main mine nearly all the gold is asociated with arsenopyrite the stibnite being almost free from gold, whilst at the Moonlight Mine both arsenopyrite and stibnite carry gold.The mineral, tetrahedrite, which is a complex sulphide of copper and antimony; must also be considered an economic source of these two metals.Part of the copper may be replaced by iron, zinc; silver; or mercury, whilst part of the antimony is often replaced by arsenic.CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIMONIAL GOLD ORESFor the purposes of this paper antimonial gold ores may be conveniently classified as follows: CLASS 1. This report describes the results of a study to evaluate new design concepts for percussive rock drills that will result in quieter machines. It is shown that by incorporating such features as an efficient muffler, a plenum chamber integral with the machine body, and shroud tubes around the drill rods, etc., noise levels are reduced from about 114 dBA to about 95 dBA with very little change in drilling performance.
