The Magmont Mine, a 50/50 venture between Cominco American Incorporated (the Operator) and Dresser Industries, Inc., (Halliburton), is a metallic mining and milling facility in the new lead belt of Missouri. The mine is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. Legislation passed in 1992 by the Missouri legislature requires all metallic mining and processing facilities to apply for a Metallic Minerals Waste Management permit (MMWM) for their waste facilities. Regulations were subsequently promulgated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Cominco obtained a MMWM permit (MM-006) from the Missouri DNR in 1992.

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. A complete summary of the flow of uranium from the Cigar Lake ore body through to product at both McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake can be found in a recent paper titled “The Cigar Lake Project – Mining, Ore Handling and Milling” in the March 2004 issue of the CIM Bulletin. "INTRODUCTION Use of sensor technology applied to the gravimetric beneficiation is intended for the selective preconcentration or separation of various minerals. Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) uses sensors to identify the particles and separate them by a mechanical process (flap) or pneumatic ejection valves (Wotruba et al. 2014). The principle of the SBS technology to separate mineral particles consists of three phases which cover feed,detection and separation. (killmann, 2009 Apud nienhaus et al. 2014). The applicability of the technique in an early stage of beneficiation enables free particles and poor grade to be a part of the process. The mass of tailings to be processed can be removed at the initial stage to save energy, water and equipment maintenance (Wotruba et al. 2014). Lindner (2010) suggested that the use of SBS technology would only will be possible if there exsists an electromagnetic interaction in all the wave spectra interacting with the solid ore. The interaction of electromagnetic waves depends directly on the characteristics of the material. The material receives a spectrum of electromagnetic waves by irradiation and this results in a reduced wavelength with differing types radiation such as fluorescence, reflection, remission, absorption, transmission and transmission. The frequency of the wave spectrum varies between 1000 and 1020Hz, illustrated by the data in Figure 1, which shows that each type of sensor emits a wavelength inversely proportional to the frequency ranging from 10-11pm to 104km, and the frequency that varies between EHz 103 and 1020kHz. The difference between the electromagnetic spectrum variations can only be visible to the human eye at wavelengths with intervals between 380nm and 780nm (Wotruba et al. 2014). One of the main advantages of operating with imaging sensors is the versatility of the images which can take on zero, one, two or three dimensions shown below as a point, a line, an area or a spatial image, as illustrated in Figure 2. According to Schubert (1988), to separate a mineral particle it is necessary to follow the characteristics of mineralogy, physics and chemistry with or without use of water. The use of new technologies can help reduce operating costs and improve utilization of mineral resources."

The construction of Oakland Airport Roadway Project for the airport expansion requires stabilization of subsurface soils for the construction of three grade separation structures at two roadway interchanges and the intersection of a roadway and taxiway serving the airport. Loose sandy fills and soft Bay Mud were improved by Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) for the construction of a soil-cement foundation under the MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls of a roadway overcrossing and a soil-cement gravity retaining wall to maintain stability of a roadway undercrossing during and after a major earthquake. CDSM was also used to construct two cutoff walls for groundwater control. A test section was carried out prior to full production to verify that the CDSM equipment, installation procedures, and mix designs could produce the soil-cement with required strength, uniformity, and permeability to meet the design intent. Additional test sections were performed for the confirmation or modification of the mix design and installation procedure to cope with the complex subsurface conditions resulting from the historical development of the site. The test section revealed that the CDSM cutoff walls, retaining wall, and foundation improvements could be constructed to satisfy the design requirements and that the intermittent test sections alleviate the impact of the varying subsurface conditions. Based on the data obtained from the test sections, one CDSM cutoff wall was completed in July 2000. Full production of the CDSM retaining wall, cutoff wall, and foundation began in March 2001 and is expected to be complete in November 2001.

Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n = 1,825) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n = 147) of coal mining operations. • More than 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.0%), West Virginia (20.9%), and Pennsylvania (20.2%). • Bituminous coal mines reported the production of over 1 billion coal tons.

Drying and preheating (partial induration) the green, unfired iron ore pellets is a means of reducing the energy required to produce metallized pellets. The Bureau of Mines processed three magnetite and two hematite concentrates through the unit operations of pelletizing, preheating in air, and reduction to metal to determine the effects of preheating upon the properties of the metallized pellets. The pellets were prepared in a 16-inch-diameter laboratory balling drum. Preheating and metallization were carried out in an externally heated 4-inch-ID by 4-inch-long stainless steel drum using air for the preheating atmosphere and lignite char as a reductant. The results 'varied considerably: two of the magnetites spalled when preheated in air at temperatures of 900° C and above, and the third magnetite and the hematite flotation concentrate required complete induration at 1,300° C to produce satisfactory pellets. The earthy hematite ore yielded excellent pellets at all preheat temperatures.

This report describes the total effort that went into developing environmental test criteria for general mine instrumentation. The project was a two-phase effort. Phase I consisted of research and mine visits to develop an environmental profile for mine instrumentation. The profile was translated into general requirements and then into test requirements. A review of existing government and commercial specifications was performed to determine if they matched mine instrumentation test requirements. Finally, a set of environmental test procedures was developed for the testing of mine instrumentation. Phase II consisted of selecting and purchasing sample mine instrumentation and subjecting them to the previously developed tests. The purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the criteria developed for use as an instrumentation test document and (2) to determine the effects of the various criteria on a representative sample of both proven and newly developed instrumentation. The test criteria were then modified, based on the results of the testing, and are listed therein.

Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. La mission que s?est donnée NIOCAN inc. consiste à mettre en production ses deux gisements et à devenir ainsi productrice de ferroniobium dans les plus brefs délais. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. In 1991, Placer Dome Venezuela established a 70% stake in Minera Las Cristinas, to mine the Las Cristinas gold deposits in Bolivar. This case study examines the multi-sectoral partnership arrangement that was developed to improve health services near the proposed Las Cristinas gold mine. The investment climate in Venezuela is uncertain and the socio-economic circumstances are potentially hostile. Despite that, the partnership between the mining company, local communities, government agencies and an international health nongovernmental organization (NGO) collectively leveraged nearly $2.5 million to build and operate a community health center.

"Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a coal-mass model to realistically simulate the deformation and loading behaviors of the ribs of coal pillars in underground coal mines. The scale-dependent properties (stiffness and strength) of coal material were considered in the coal-mass model. In this paper the orientation of face cleat with respect to driving direction was integrated in the coal-mass model. The controlling parameters (dimensionless coal-mass scale and fracture strains) of the modified coal-mass model were calibrated using a published case study of coal pillar strength. Numerical models with wide ranges of controlling parameters were conducted to simulate the test pillar. The best match between the numerical modeling results and the measured stresses and deformations was achieved by using a coal-mass scale of 30 and fracture plastic shear and tensile strains of 3.25% and 0.325 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION The failure of coal pillar ribs by itself are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can indirectly contribute to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the past decade, rib failures have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Mining depth has always played a very important role in assessing rib stability. Gauna and Mark (2010) completed an analysis of rib fatalities that occurred between 1996 and 2010. One of their most prominent and influential findings was the identification of a relationship among fatalities, depth, and mining height. Therefore, Coal rib stability will continue to be a challenge for future deeper mines in U.S. coal basins. In the past several decades, research efforts have focused on roof support. The current rib control practice in U.S. coal mines is to select rib bolts through a trial-and-error approach (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Rib failure incidents can be can be substantially reduced or even eliminated by adopting an engineering-based coal rib design approach. The factors affecting rib stability in coal mines are numerous and mutually dependent. These factors include but not limited to mining height and overburden depth, interburden thickness for multiple-seam mining, coal strength, cleat density, entry direction with respect to cleat orientation, existence or absence of partings in the coal, percentage of extracted roof and/or floor rock, density of rib bolt support (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Moreover, it is difficult to isolate the particular effect of a specific factor on the overall rib stability. Therefore, a reliable empirical rib design approach is not achievable because it requires a significant number of case histories to be collected in order to have a reasonable range of all of the critical parameters. However, numerical modeling can be a practical tool to assist with rib support design if the modeling is realistic, which can only be achieved through calibration and validation of the numerical model against field data."

Sandstone, a widely distributed siliceous sedimentary rock, is the third most popular building stone in the United States. It is formed by the breaking down of preexisting rocks by weathering, subsequent segregation of the detrital quartz grains into discrete deposits by the sorting action of water or wind, and finally cementation of the quartz sand into a coherent rock. The homogeneity and resistance to weathering of the resultant sandstone make it suitable for exterior construction. Its excellent wearing properties explain its popularity for flagging and stair treads. However, quarrying and dressing methods and costs are adversely affected by the abrasiveness and hardness of sandstone especially as compared to limestone.

The strippable reserves of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States were calculated in accordance with the prevailing conditions of seam thickness and depth of overburden in each of the several coal-producing areas of the Nation. Within defined limits of seam thickness and depth of overburden, it is estimated that there was a remaining strippable resource of 118 billion tons of raw bituminous coal and lignite as of January 1, 1968. Because of topography, natural and manmade features, and other limitations, only 45 billion tons of the resource are strippable reserves. Of this, 32 billion tons is considered low-sulfur (less than 1 percent), 4 billion tons is medium-sulfur (1 to 2 percent), and 9 billion tons is high-sulfur (over 2 percent) coal. Owing to a cleaning loss affecting that portion of strip coal that is mechanically cleaned, the 45 billion tons of strippable reserves are reduced to 39.6 billion tons of marketable coal. A brief discussion is given for each coal-producing State, summarizing past and present production, historical background, and outlook. Appendix A contains reserve data by State, county, seam, and sulfur content. Appendix B contains the general information and requirements necessary to comply with the current strip mining laws covering 20 States.

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. This paper highlights the challenges and risks arising from this data compilation, geological interpretation, re-estimation and classification process, together with future opportunities and challenges for further developing the area.CITATION:Olssen, L M, Graindorge, J and Jia, C, 2017.
