Test equipment has been developed to record automatically both the displacement of the pile head and the load applied during a conventional maintained load pile test. Some systems also have, in addition, been fitted with the facility for maintaining the applied load, as set by the operator, at very constant levels. The advantages are both commercial and technical, but a well trained operator has to be in attendance to control the test. Since typical test specifications in the UK require more than 19 hours to complete, it became inevitable that at least one equipment operator remained on site to expedite the test for its duration. Although electronic measurement and data logging of load tests may be more safe than previous direct observation of dial gauges. A single person remaining on a construction site alone is not to be recommended, even if they are just supervising the test. Further development of the testing system produced equipment which will perform the entire test specification as required without operator intervention. To achieve this, full automation is employed. The patented method particularly addresses the safety requirements and by using additional sensors, detects any uncharacteristic behaviour of the pile under test or of the reaction system and the equipment takes appropriate action in a controlled and safe manner. The quality of test data returned from these automated systems is a key element when analysing pile behaviour with models such as CEMSOLVE? and TIMESETTM. These analysis methods often indicate ground disturbance resulting from installation technique and have allowed pile design to be optimised using actual field data rather than theoretical considerations alone. An additional feature is remote access, this allows the data recorded to be transferred and the progress of the test to be viewed from practically any location. This permits experts to view the data 'live' and allows rapid diagnosis of any problems with the expected pile behaviour.

Lead blast furnace water-jacket stability was investigated by examining samples from the Port Pirie Lead Smelter. The compositions of the phases formed in the samples were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electron Probe X-ray Microanalyser (EPMA). Phase equilibria analysis and thermodynamic modelling was undertaken using FactSage with latest thermodynamic database for the slag/matte/metal/speiss/solids multi-component Cu2O–PbO–ZnO– Al2O3–CaO–MgO–FeO–Fe2O3–SiO2–S major and As–Bi–Sb–Sn–Ag–Au minor elements system. Results indicated that the stability of the water-jacket steel wall without freeze-lining is influenced by formation of the complex Fe-rich speiss phase at critical As concentrations. The integrity of the furnace walls with freeze-lining is critically dependent of the stability of the oxide-based freeze-lining which is dependent on various factors including most critical one—the proportion of solids determined by the slag chemistry and fluxing. Thermodynamic modelling of the lead blast furnace operation indicated limiting thermochemical conditions for the water-jacket stability. Factors and controls critical to the water-jackets integrity are discussed.

Affecting the practicability of transition technologies are attitudes of the public, capital requirements and availability, patterns of fuels utilization, producibility of fuels and the actions of governments. Primary energy sources to replace deficiencies of oil and gas and provide growth in the period of transition will be coal, oil shale, nuclear energy and peat.

"A Pilot Plant was installed in one of the grinding circuits of the Dome Mill, Ontario, Canada. Tests were conducted on a KCCD12 Knelson Concentrator to systematically analyze the effect of operating variables on the performance. The main objective of this test work was to explore the effect of very coarse (6 mm) feed size on GRG recovery and performance of the Knelson concentrator. Preliminary results have shown that coarse feed size is deleterious to maximizing recovery. Size-by-size GRG recoveries have shown an unusual trend in the sense that recoveries do not decrease monotonically with decreasing gold particle size. Similar trend observed in one other full-scale unit has been compared. The observed trend is probably linked to the feed size distribution and top size.INTRODUCTIONKnelson Concentrators are the most widely used semi-continues centrifuge gravity separation units for the recovery of gold and platinum group minerals (Xiao and Laplante 2004). The main advantages over the competing centrifugal gravity units are their design, operating simplicity and good separation efficiency that make them the most common choice for gravity circuit. Despite some characterization at bench scale and a limited characterization at full scale, there is a lack of a comprehensive study of impact of operating variables on efficiency that reflects realistic full scale operating practice. GRG characterization studies, at bench scale, on these units provide information about the occurrence of gold in ore samples but fail to provide adequate information about the effect of operating variables for full-scale units. It is well known fact that such work is difficult to undertake on full-scale units owing to the difficulties involved in sampling and systematic variation of operating parameters. To tackle these problems, a pilot facility consisting of a 12-in CD Knelson Concentrator, a feed screen and tailing pump was installed in one of the grinding circuits of Dome Mill. This paper describes the work carried out and the results.Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV)Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. The JV utilizes the milling capacity of the Dome Mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines. The Dome Mill circuit has gravity concentration, cyanidation and CIP circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used at Dome Mill since inception to recover gold: first by using conventional jigs, which were eventually replaced by two Knelson Concentrators in 1993, one in each of the grinding circuits. Three more Knelsons joined the circuit in 2002 to improve gravity recovery. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was also added in 2002 to process gold concentrates replacing shaking tables (Chong et al 2004)."

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the extraction of alumina from domestic kaolin clay by leaching with boiling 26 wt-pct hydrochloric acid. Acid leaching of crushed calcined kaolin feed yields slurries that are slow settling and difficult to filter because of the presence of fine particles generated in crushing, calcining, and leaching. Laboratory research showed that tumbling and moistening crushed raw kaolin on a pelletizing disk caused the fines to agglomerate on the surfaces of the larger particles, while the sharp edges and corners of the larger particles were rounded off. Minus 16-mesh crushed raw kaolin was misted on a 36-in-diam, 8-in-deep pelletizing disk at rates of 175 to 250 lb/hr, and was calcined in either a rotary or a fluidized-bed calciner; negligible degradation occurred. The physical properties of the misted calcined kaolin were evaluated in the leaching system of the clay-hydrochloric acid miniplant. Only minor attrition occurred during leaching, and the slurry was readily filtered on a continuous belt filter.

The first International Conference on Ground Control in Mining opened with the topic of pillar design. Two classic papers were presented, one by Bieniwski and the other by Wilson. Unfortunately, the two methods were so radically different from each other that it was nearly impossible to reconcile them. Adding to the confusion were the many other pillar strength formulas (such as the Salamon-Munro, the Holland-Gaddy, and the Obert-Duvall, just to name a few) that were also available. Little wonder that discussions of pillar design in those days often ended with anguished cries of “but which formula is the right one?” The past 25 years have seen substantial progress in the science of coal pillar design. Indeed, one testament to the improvement is the relative scarcity of papers on the topic at recent Conferences. Two factors have been largely responsible for the progress that has been made. The first has been the collection of large data bases of actual case histories of pillar performance in a variety of settings, from shallow room-and-pillar mines through deep cover longwalls. These have made possible the development of empirical design procedures that are closely linked to real world experience. The second important factor is the development of sophisticated computer models that can accurately simulate pillar behavior and roof/pillar/floor interactions. Together, these two lines of research have led to a new understanding of pillar mechanics that identifies three modes of pillar failure: • Sudden, massive collapse, accompanied by airblast, for slender pillars (width/height<4) • Squeezing, or slow, non-violent failure, for most room and pillar applications (4<w/h<10) • Entry failure or bumps for deep cover and longwall applications (w/h>10) It is particularly satisfying that the insights gained from numerical models broadly support those obtained from the empirical studies. While far less controversial than in the past, pillar design problems continue to arise. One recent example is pillar design for highwall mining. NIOSH has just released a software package, called ARMPS-HWM, which employs a number of modern pillar design concepts. This report presents the results of six STATNAMIC loading tests that were carried out on four different pile types at the CALTRANS 280 Test Site (Bridge No. 34-46) in conjunction with the Tension Pile Test Program. The STATNAMIC testing was performed by Berminghammer Corporation at the request of the California Department of Transportation, Office of Geotechnical Engineering. Others performed the static tension (uplift) and compression loading tests which werecarried out on the piles tested using the STATNAMIC method. A summary of the STATNAMIC test results is presented and discussed, and the appropriate results are compared with the static test results

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. The present computerized mine planning systems use CAD-like and Data Base Management System (DBMS) environments for the handling of numerical, textural, and graphical data. These two environments are usually integrated, that the data provided by the DBMS are linked to any graphical element rendered by the CAD system. The subsidence monitoring, analysis and prediction process should be integrated with the mine design process. It should allow for the assessment of impacts of mining on surface, surface utilities, and structures. It should also provide for the measures to control mining, that will create only acceptable levels of negative impacts on the surface. The common data base, and graphical capabilities of the CAD interface, may be used with great advantage for both systems. The findings of the subsidence engineering modulus should be directly incorporated into the mine design system, and vice versa. In this paper the author suggests guidelines for the development of the comprehensive computer system, able not only to predict the vertical and horizontal components of the ground movement, but also assess the induced surface damages, and costs related to subsidence prevention and compensation.

Today, we hear that it is not worth the time preparing corporate business plans as they are out-of-date before the ink is dry. Within the corporate environment of the 1990s, we must “think” strategically, be a “learning organization”, keep our costs low, focus on our core competencies, stay as flexible as possible and create value. So-called “sustainable competitive advantages” can be obsolete before a patent is issued — if its even worthwhile patenting the advancement. This is industry in the 1990s.Now, while all this radical change has been underway in the global industrial environment, what have Canada’s universities been doing to keep pace with the change affecting one of their major stakeholders? Have they adapted their products and services to suit the new market conditions? Have they built closer links to industry to try to understand how better to serve this important client? Do they welcome industry input as to how to redefine their mission, objectives, strategies or their course contents? Do their students graduate with skills ideally tailored for the global mining industry? In the era of communication, can they write high quality reports in English, never mind speak French or Spanish?In an effort to provide Canada’s engineering faculties with a “blueprint” for the future, the Canadian Academy of Engineering pre-pared a report entitled “Engineering Education in Canadian Universities”, published in August1993, which concluded with the following recommendations:"

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mechanics of fuming of iron-carbon melts during top-blowing with oxygen. Melts weighing 45 lb were prepared in an induction furnace and blown with oxygen by means of water-cooled lances. The rate of fuming was measured and correlated with the operating variables. The data showed that the primary cause of fuming was a boil at the bath surface in the impingement zone of the oxygen jet. Nucleation of the carbon monoxide bubbles producing the boil was apparently brought about by the precipitation of an oxide phase. The actual fuming mechanism involved partial oxidation and vaporization of bubble films and fine metal spray generated by the bursting of the bubbles. Bubbles that formed outside the impingement zone produced little fume. The distribution of trace elements between the metal and fume strongly indicated that the fume contained fine spray particles as well as particles that had condensed from vapor. The rate of fuming was found to be proportional to the carbon content of the metal) the concentration of oxygen in the jet) and the bath temperature) provided that a continuous boil occurred. In the absence of a boil) very little fume was produced.

This report disucsses the formulation of a mathematical model for the steering of a conveyor belt by a flat return idler and a troughed idler under various loading conditions. Significant parameters associated with belt training are identified. The generation of a skewed flat return idler model in terms of a steering force and self-aligning torque is presented. Development of the mathematical model for the flat return steering idler is illustrated for the case of no circumferential slip occurring and for the assumption of a bidirectional slip mechanism. Experimental results supporting the theoretical analysis is presented.

Resue mining was practiced extensively in the East Rand in the first half of this century. The obvious benefits were that a higher grade of ore was trammed to the surface. The disadvantages were slow rates of face advance and an extremely labour-intensive method of mining. A collaborative effort by personnel from Avgold?s Target Gold Mine and Sandvik Tamrock has resulted in the design of a method of resue mining which can be totally mechanized. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology used and the proposed new mechanized resue mining method.

Research shows that water neutralizes the explosion hazard of coal dust when present in sufficient quantity and when intimately mixed with the dust. The quantity of water required to neutralize coal dust and coal-rock dust mixtures is about equal to the limiting moisture adsorptive capacity of the dust; the adsorptive capacity increases with increase in the fineness and volatile content of the coal. Pools of water or high atmospheric humidity do not reduce the explosion hazard. Although wetted dust is less dispersible than dry dust, poor dispersibility cannot be relied on as the sole safeguard against explosion. Dust mixtures that contain water in excess of their limiting adsorptive capacity are dispersed and ignited by severe initiation sources. Pure coal dust adsorbs water with difficulty and retains water poorly; adsorption and retention is increased by the addition of rock dust the coal; the rock dust agglutinates wetted coal and assures that incombustible is present should drying occur. Therefore, it is advantageous to rock-dust wet areas in bituminous coal and lignite mines. When coal-rock dust mixtures are wetted and subsequently dried, the explosion hazard is about the same as for dust which was not wetted.

This paper outlines the methodology and results pertaining to the simulation of the U.S. coal industry in the context of an integrated, time-dynamic model of Long-Range Energy Developments and Supplies (LORENDAS). By way of background we will present first an overview of the overall LORENDAS model structure. We will, then, outline the characteristics of the formulation and data used for the representation of the U.S. coal industry. Finally, a series of model results will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the long term projections of coal production and distribution under different basic economic and/or political scenarios.

Engineering and economic evaluations were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 Frasch sulfur, 1 native sulfur, and 21 metal sulfide operations in 11 market economy countries. The evaluation included discounted-cash-flow rate-of-return economic analyses at 15 pct to determine the average total cost of production of these two commodities and the potential availability of elemental sulfur (8) and pyrite concentrate. The Bureau evaluated the potential availability of elemental sulfur and pyrite concentrate. Approximately 279 million metric tons (Mmt) of pyrite concentrate at 46 pct 8 is potentially recoverable from 422 Mmt of in situ metal sulfide ore. Nearly 89 pct of the total pyrite concentrate is available at an average total cost of production below the January 1984 pyrite concentrate market price ($43/mt). About 185 Mmt 8 is potentially recoverable from 253 Mmt of in situ elemental sulfur. About 99 pct of this sulfur is available at an average total cost of production below its January 1984 market price ($131/mt).
