O estudo do retorno elástico dos materiais metálicos constitui alvo de pesquisa há muitos anos, abordando diversos parâmetros relacionados à ocorrência desse problema comum em operações de estampagem de chapas como a quantidade de deformação prévia, o tipo de material e o estado inicial do mesmo em termos estruturais. No entanto, apesar de serem adotados diversos métodos experimentais para exibir a quantidade de deformação que o material exibe de modo indesejado percebe-se a dificuldade de a mesma ser identificada corretamente como, por exemplo, ensaios de dobramento. Diante do exposto, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do retorno elástico exibido pelo aço Dual Phase após ciclos de deformação plástica em cisalhamento cíclico (cisalhamento direto e reverso) em função da quantidade de pré-deformação em cisalhamento direto e da taxa de deformação adotada nos ensaios. Os resultados indicaram o sucesso do uso da técnica de cisalhamento para o estudo do retorno elástico do aço Dual Phase e a influência da quantidade de deformação cíclica e da taxa de deformação no retorno elástico apresentado por esse aço, sendo maior o efeito exibido por esta última variável.

"RÉSUMÉDurant les 10 dernières années, les améliorations dans le contrôle des limites des sautages et les arpentages après l’exploitation ont fourni des informations préalables et post facto sur les limites minières réalisées par rapport à la planification, plus particulièrement pour les grands chantiers exploités par les méthodes chambres vides et sous-niveaux. Cependant, peu de recherches ont été faites pour améliorer la délimitation du minerai, l’estimation des ressources et des réserves, les études de faisabilité et la récupération minière dans d’autres types de gisements. Il faudra d’abord expliciter les impacts des lacunes, en quantité et en qualité, de l’information géologique et de l’échantillonnage sur le rendement de l’extraction. Il faudra également remplacer la notion de « dilution générale » par celles de « dilution » et de « perte de minerai ». Les impacts des lacunes observées sur l’exploitation des gisements d’or filoniens sont démontrés par une simulation basée sur des résultats d’études antérieures à la mine Thompson d’Inco, des impacts financiers de densités d’information moindre et par des analyses des valeurs actualisées nettes (VAN) de deux cas types.Deux gisements similaires, de 3 m et 6 m de largeur et exploités par chambres vides sont étudiés, en prenant pour cas de base la délimitation sur maille de 7,5 m (25 pi.) et en étudiant les impacts des limites moins précises supportées par une maille de 15 m (50 pi.), en assumant que ces imprécisions moyennes de +/- 0,62 m se transforment soit en surestimation (dilution), soit en sous-estimation (pertes de minerai).Les impacts d’information moins précise ont été beaucoup plus forts sur le gisement plus étroit : autant la dilution que les pertes de métal ont diminué les VAN du gisement de 3 m de 39,27 % et 45,41 % respectivement, tandis que les VAN du gisement de 6 m ont été diminuées que de 12,84 % et 11,55 %.Ces impacts des valeurs actualisées nettes diminuées justifient et exigent des efforts plus systématiques pour s’assurer que les travaux de mise en valeur et les études de faisabilité soient réalisés de façon requise pour optimiser l’exploitation et offrir aux investisseurs des rendements compétitifs par rapport à ceux des autres secteurs industriels. ABSTRACTDuring the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits.However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses have not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently are poorly documented, the use of these terms is reviewed.Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco’s Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delineation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study.The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit"

This Bureau of Mines report is an evaluation of the state of knowledge about gravity flow from bin hoppers, the most commonly used method of handling bulk materials where the force of gravity is used. The requirements for flow to be initiated and to continue, formulas developed experimentally or mathematically from various assumptions to describe the materials flow, and the question of whether or not a material will flow over the entire cross sectional area of the bin hopper according to the flow regime developed are the primary areas discussed. The work of A. W. Jenike, whose pioneering investigations raised bin hop- per design from the trial and error state, is examined in depth and its limitations and assumptions are pointed out. Bin hopper design depends heavily upon prior experience, and suggestions for further studies of bin hopper flow to include the effects of feeders are made.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by MSHA and required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. A polycarbonate safe haven wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics to withstand the MSHA required 15 psi (103.4 kPa) blast loading spanning 200 milliseconds. The successful design was constructed in both half-scale and small scales in the University of Kentucky Explosives Research Team’s (UKERT) explosives driven shock tube. The constructed polycarbonate walls were tested multiple times to determine the walls resistance to blast pressure. The results for each test were analyzed and averaged to create one pressure versus time waveform which was then imported into the finite element program and modeled to compare deflections of each part to that was measured during testing for model validation. This paper summarizes the results.

"Utilization of high-quality heat in melting slag is a great challenge for iron and steel industry. In the paper, a new method is put forward to concurrently utilize heat and slag by converting the melting slag directly into high valued materials, slag glass-ceramic. A glassceramic with a higher basicity of 0.7 than traditional basicity of 0.45 was prepared from steelmaking slag in order to utilize more hot melting slag. Effects of Alz03 on its crystallization processes were researched by XRF, DTA, XRD and SEM. Results show that Alz03 in glassceramic would have great effected on its property. When the Alz03 content ranges within 12%-15%, glass-ceramics with basicity of0.7 could reach the best performances. The change of dominant phase in glass ceramics from akermanite and wollastonite to akermanite and gehlenite would significantly degrade its mechanical property. An increase of Al2O3 content leads to a rise of the viscosity and crystallization activation energy of the glass, while results in increasing sintering temperature and crystallization temperature of glass, which contributed to its fully crystallization and densification process.IntroductionSteel slag is a by-product under a process of converting iron to steel at above 1600°C, and 0.1-0.15 ton molten steel slag would be discharged for producing per ton of steel in the process. The discharged steel slag at 1600°C has heat of 68 kgce/t. In 2012, China's steel output reached 716 million tons, and produces about 100 million tons of steel slag and 68,000 tee of heat in it [1,2]. But at present, utilization of both slag and its heat at 1600°C is a great challenge for iron and steel industry.Dry granulation of melting steel slag by air and then recovering the heat of the hot air are a traditional technology which have not yet been put into practice for very low heat conductivity of the slag and low efficient of heat exchange among the different processes [3,4]. Therefore, a new method for high efficient utilization of both steel slag and its high temperature sensible heat is put forward [5,6], which is on-line reducing and extracting iron from molten steel slag and then directly preparing glass-ceramic by use of the residual molten slag."

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.

"The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location. This paper describes both the innovation and environmental sustainability approaches followed when developing the new regulator for its implementation at the site.CITATION:Shearer, M J and Mutton, V S, 2015. Future developments in the mining sector will be driven by the need to increase safety, ecological sustainability and efficiency. Autonomous systems represent a huge step towards achieving these goals. This paper describes the basic infrastructure of an autonomous system – essentially a network of distributed sensors. Although the sensors are distributed, the overarching communication network with its related middleware offers a transparent and uniform layer. This middleware acts as an abstraction layer which priorities information and provides information to other platforms on request. This permits higher-level autonomous functionality to utilise all information available in the system regardless of where data has been generated or via which physical communication link it has been processed.The Personnel Proximity Detection (PDD) system is described in detail as an example, with details not only of the system itself, but also of the essential full integration and how the abstraction layer allows this technology to be plugged in at any location of the network. The paper ends with a summary of the content and a conclusion.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a corrosão dos aços API 5L B e X52MS em soluções ácidas descritas nas normas NACE TM0284 e TM0177. A susceptibilidade ao trincamento induzido pelo hidrogênio (HIC) foi determinada em cada meio, os produtos de corrosão foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X e, posteriormente identificados por difratometria de raios-X. Conclui-se que o pH afeta diretamente a solubilidade dos produtos de corrosão e a permeação de hidrogênio. Na solução 177-A, ambos os aços sofreram corrosão generalizada, enquanto que na solução 177-B foi evidenciada a presença de um filme fino descontinuo. Somente o API 5L B não passou no teste de HIC. Na solução 284-B de maior pH, os aços apresentaram filmes espessos e o trincamento pelo hidrogênio não foi observado.

"This paper addresses the need for advanced control technologies and strategies in the mining industry, its potential and actual impact on mining processes and the best practices for their implementation, operation, and long term sustainability. It is well known that advanced process control (APC) can be a very good source for incremental process improvement for the mining industry, yielding to higher production rates or helping maintain consistent production rates despite ore changes. The application and integration of new technology, process knowledge and innovation are key elements in building such a supporting structure. More specifically, and this cannot be emphasized enough, the correct application and assembly of control tools, the in-time presentation of key data to decision makers and the development of relevant statistics and KPI’s (key performance indicators) can and will make a difference not only in terms of production, but also in plant stability, availability and production costs. In deploying such ideas and aiming at the long-term goal of "Operational Excellence", Minera Los Pelambres (MLP) has developed a number of successful control strategies, best practices and technologies, which are not only the application of state-of-the-art automation and computing tools, but rather the assembly of the above presented structuring factors. This work discusses some of the key tools and ideas implemented for SAG & Ball milling and Flotation areas, their performance results and the roadmap taken for the integration of process knowledge and control tools. Also, cases studies are presented and discussed further to not only show the main areas of improvement, but also to highlight the benefits of such strategy that for the most part, deviate from the traditional mining industry control approach. Also, a word is given on the need for innovating in the design of control strategies and leveraging best practices and process knowledge that ultimately, will contribute to long-term reliable operations, improved mineral processing and, although unmeasured, lead to a superior overall performance and productivity of all mining personnel involved."

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.

Drag bit cutting tests were conducted chiefly to determine bit forces encountered in rock types representing a range of compressive strength and hardness and thus enable the design engineer to estimate a continuous miner's performance in a range of rock types. Testing was carried out on the Bureau of Mines uniquely designed, instrumented rock cutting device (RCD). This device can make 3-ft-long cuts at various depths and speeds to approximate full-scale drag bit cutting by continuous miners. Point attack and cutter bits were tested on four rock types ranging in compressive strength from 7,200 psi (trona) to 29,600 psi (Valders white rock). Cutting tests were made at depths up to 1 in and speeds up to 70 in/sec. Data included normal and cutting forces, groove depth, groove width, and weight of rock broken. The effect of varying the cutting speed was determined, and specific energies were calculated for the various conditions. The bit wear was also observed. For the rocks tested, compressive strength and hardness are good indicators of forces, specific energy, and wear encountered. Results, especially bit wear observations, show the possibility of extending continuous miners, already being used in trona, to Indiana limestone (10,000 psi). Rapid bit deterioration precludes use in Tennessee marble (16,800 psi) and Valders white rock (29,600 psi).

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? "The CDM-LODIC method (cement deep mixing - low displacement and control) method enables ground displacement to be reduced by removing an amount of soil equivalent to that of injected cement slurry and the volume of the plunged mixing tool, which causes a certain degree of ground displacement. Since the CDM-LODIC method was developed in 1985, it has been applied to over 930 sites and the accumulated volume of stabilized soil has now reached 7.6 million cubic meters.In the CDM method, the number of blade rotations per unit depth in the ground when the mixing blades are withdrawn is considered a construction item. The blade rotation number depends on the degree of mixing between the cement slurry and the ground Some field tests were performed based on the degree of mixing between the cement slurry and the ground. In these tests, a new concept of evaluating the blade rotation number when the screw rod penetrates to a given depth without injecting cement slurry has contributed to the degree of mixing. Furthermore, a correlation exists between the coefficient of efficiency of soil removal and the cement slurry admixture rate. In this paper, we discus the data collected in those field tests and present some application examples.OUTLINE OF CDM-LODIC METHODThe injection of cement slurry may cause some ground displacement during Cement Deep Mixing (CDM). In recent years, due to an increased demand for ground improvement work in urban areas, there is increased concern that buildings near any CDM site may be adversely affected. The deep mixing method which reduces displacement due to mixing (CDM-LODIC method) enables ground displacement to be minimized by removing an amount of soil equivalent to the injected cement slurry and the volume of the mixing tool, which itself causes some ground displacement. When the construction site is near other structures, regardless of whether on or under the ground, the CDM-LODIC method can be used in order to minimize any ground displacement. There are considered to be two main causes of ground displacement as shown in Figure 1. Displacement A indicates ground displacement caused by the volume of the inserted mixing tool during the penetration stage and displacement B indicates ground displacement caused by the volume of the injected stabilizing agent. Thus, by removing soil equivalent to the volume of the inserted mixing tool and the injected stabilizing agent, ground displacement can theoretically be minimized. Figure 2 shows the amount of observed ground displacement in the cases of CDM and CDM-LODIC at an actual site. These case studies indicate that ground displacement can be reduced by removing the soil."

The State of California, Department of Transportation is currently retrofitting a major interchange near the San Francisco area. The project is located in a highly traveled area of Oakland with light rail commuter service near many footings. Over 600 micropiles are being used in conjunction with CIDH piles for footing stabilization. A specially designed Soil Nail pile will support footings for a new light rail utility structure. Pile testing features in this contract serve as points of interest for future foundation designs. The presentation focuses on substructure issues of this incterchange retrofit.
