The Cu-Au flotation cleaning circuit at Freeport Indonesia consists of three stages: two flotation column stages, in series, followed by one stage of mechanical cells. Concentrate from both column stages is combined as final concentrate. The mechanical cell stage has two parallel rows of seven Wemco 500's. The Wemco concentrate is recycled to feed of the second column stage and Wemco tails report to final tailings. This paper examines cleaner circuit performance, focusing on size-by-size performance of the individual stages and the individual mineral groups -copper sulfides, gold and in sol minerals. The recovery mechanisms of insol minerals are examined.

Both microgravimetry and crosshole seismic tomography are means by which subsurface collapse and rock failure may be observed. We show results of calculations that predict changes in gravity and gravity gradient that result from void migration, bulking, and hydrology disruption due to room and pillar mining. Crosshole seismic tomography also holds promise for detecting and mapping changes in structure during subsidence. Commercially avail- able logging tools, advances in theory, and recent field results strongly suggest tomographic surveys are now possible. Subsidence phenomena which may be located are faulting, joint separation, bed parting, water table changes, and formation outgassing.

The removal of metals from an acid mine drainage (Leviathan Mine, Alpine County, California) water by precipitate flotation was investigated. The Leviathan waters vary from about pH 4.0 to pH <2.0and contain from about 2,000 to about 12,000 ppm SO42-.The main multivalent metals present in solution are Fe, Ca, Mg, Al and Mn. Both Cu and Co are present in small amounts. The pH was adjusted with lime. The collector used was either sodium oleate or tall oil. The sodium oleate was used as a function of pH to establish optimum flotation conditions and the tall oil was used only at the optimum pH. Dow Froth 250 was used as a frother. In some test additional Cu was added to the system. Excellent recovery of Fe and Cu were achieved at optimum pH. The process achieves results comparable to precipitation and filtration without as much problems with screens blinding because of less material to filter.

The ‘Westerschelde Tunnel’ underpasses the estuary of the Schelde in the Netherlands. The tunnel will consist of two tubes which are driven by two hydroshields (slurry shields). The tunnels will each have a length of approx. 6.6km and a bore-diameter of 11.33 m. Demanding ground conditions had to be considered during the design of the shield machines. Loose sands, extensive clay formations and high ground water pressures of up to 6.5 bar will be encountered during the tunnel drive. The tunnelling activities will start in the middle of 1999 and are scheduled to end by the end of 2001.

The 1.8 mi (2.9 km) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Light Rail Transit Tunnels and Station project is comprised of the underground segments of the 11.8 mi(18.8 km) Hiawatha Light Rail Transit route in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 21 ft 2 in(6.5 m) diameter twin tunnels were mined 65 ft beneath one of the busiest airports in the United States using an earth pressure balanced tunnel-boring machine. This paper will provide a project overview, review the major equipment selected, tunnel segment casting, and describe excavation and lining operations for the tunnels and station.

The greatest part of crushed stone, gravel and sand production is extracted through open pit operations, whereas gravel and sand are also partially extracted from riverbeds. Its obvious that such a mining activity provokes some changes in the configuration and environmental characteristics of the region, in the temporary or permament disapperance of vegetable or animal species and in the creation of noise, dust and waste water. However, the above-mentioned mining operations shouldn not have only negative effects on the landscape and land potential, but they can discover and predetermine the potential of the exploited areas for various communal purposes after exploitation (eg. sports and recreation centers, campsites, resorts, fish-farms, etc.). In this paper, the production of construction aggregates in plants located in the vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of aggregates? production in urban areas in the spirit of sustainable development are discussed.

The objective of this unique method is to multiply the advance rate of conventional tunneling while improving both ground control and the safety of the crew. The high advance rate is achieved by concurrent rock excavation and installation of concrete lining at fully synchronized work phases. The novel TACHUSMATIC system consists of a high-production, robotic cutter boom, an automated slip form and continuous mucking and conveying. This novel system utilizes the inherent bearing capacity of the rock that is activated by a small, initial deformation. The supporting resistance is then provided both by the rock mass itself and the pumped in concrete lining. During the hardening of the concrete, the hydraulic cylinders of the TACHUSMATIC automatically apply the appropriate support resistance, thus providing safe ground control. This novel tunneling system is practically a fully automated, fail-safe NATM that does not require highly skilled engineers and crew. The TACHUSMATIC can be used for construction of circular, rectangular and horseshoe-shaped tunnels. When equipped with the Alpine Multi-Tool Miner (MTM) systems, the machine can work in a wide range of ground and rock conditions. The use of novel, diamond-tipped cutter bits (picks) will increase hard rock cutting capabilities and will significantly reduce pick consumption. Because of its moderate cost, the novel system is an economic alternative to conventional tunneling even at short drivages. A new installation is cost-effective for tunnels longer than 750 meters (2,500 ft.) At a typical tunneling project, the cost permeter is about 25% lower than with conventional methods.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler&apos; operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. "A numerical modeling was conducted to describe the behavior of overlying strata on the longwall top coal caving face for exploitation of a 16.8 m thick coal seam. Three typical structural models, including the Cantilever Structure (CS), Lower Cantilever and Upper Hinged Arch Structure (LC&UHA), and Lower Arch and Upper Voussoir Beam (LA&UVB), were developed. Based on mechanical analysis of the different structures of the key strata, and considering the behaviors of the broken igneous rock strata, a method was proposed and applied to estimate the structures of the overburden strata. The results had been verified by a field micro-seismic monitoring test. The paper provides a foundational method to determine the shield loadings for the top coal caving longwall face.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top coal caving (LTCC) is a highly productive underground mining technology which has been widely applied to the exploitation of the thick coal seams in China and other countries due to its high efficiency (Ju and Xu, 2013; Ju, Xu, and Wang, 2011; Liu et al., 2009). In recent years, a large amount of research on mining pressure forecast, strata control, and mechanical equipment improvement of the LTCC technology has been carried out, which greatly advances the field application of the technology (Liu et al., 2009; Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011; Chen and Li, 2011; Yin, Yan, and An, 2008). In 2006, the LTCC technology was first applied to the exploitation in a 20 m thick coal seam at the Tashan Coal Mine in China (Yan et al., 2011). Ten years of mining at the Tashan Coal Mine has highlighted the importance of the support management in controlling the roof strata on the extra-thick LTCC face. The mining pressure is closely related to the structural features of the overlying strata and its movement laws (Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011). However, the distributions of three zones—caving zone, fracture zone, and deformation zone—on the fully mechanized caving longwalls changed significantly with the increase in thickness of the coal seam (Chen and Li, 2011). The behavior changes of the roof strata led to abnormal pressure in the mining face and resulted in the difficulty of surrounding rock control (Yin, Yan, and An, 2008; Liu et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2011; Gong and Jin, 2008). Therefore, the theoretical research focused on the behavior of overlying strata to reveal the laws of mining pressure has important theoretical significance and practical value.Many classical studies (Qian and Shi, 2003; Feng, 2010; Yu, 2015; Yu, Yan, and Liu, 2012) had been done to describe the behavior of overlying strata in the mining process. It has also been reported that magma intrusion causes an important effect on the surrounding rock, coal, and methane (Wang et al., 2005; Liu et al., 2007). On the one hand, the property and structure of the coal seam was obviously changed by the magma intrusion and resulted in a potential danger of a gas outburst during the mining process (Chen et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2014). On the other hand, the hard igneous strata and the joints occurred with the magma cooled, causing an abnormal behavior of overlying strata and resulting in a series of dynamic disasters during mining (Xuan, Xu, and Lu, 2014; Lu et al., 2016). In fact, many coal fields in China are intruded by igneous sill, including the Datong, Shuozhou, Huainan, and Xuzhou coal fields (Chen et al., 2014; Wu, 2011). The 3–5 coal seam at Tashan Coal Mine in Datong coal field is very thick and is intruded by a large area of layered lamprophyre rock. Face falls and shield failures occurred frequently during the face retreat."

23.1-SOURCE, POWER-SYSTEM ELEMENTS A. J. T HUM Basic considerations in providing power for mine production and collateral operations are: 1. Mining operations of any size normally use electric motors for driving all equipment except mobile service units. 2. The electricity for power may be purchased or self-generated, depending on the location, size and specific operating circumstances of the individual property. 3. The major elements of the power system will be the source, either an incoming transmission line from a utility in the case of purchased power or the power plant if self-generated. Energy for the power plant may be water, hydrocarbon fuels, waste heat or nuclear, which will govern the type of prime mover selected. 4. The electricity normally is generated in the form of alternating current and must be distributed to the points of usage. This usually requires a primary substation for transformation to suitable voltages and secondary substations at points of usage throughout the operations, The power is delivered from the primary to the secondary substations over transmission lines or cables, depending on distances, voltages and local conditions. 5. At the points of use, there will be starting and protective devices for each motor. In some instances, direct current will be needed and rectifiers of various types can be used to provide it. 6. The entire electrical system requires suitable switching and protective devices to prevent damage to the equipment in case of power failues or faults; also, in most cases, sufficient metering to establish the demand and amount of electrical energy consumed. 23.2-PURCHASED POWER A. J. THULI 1. Where public-utility or government-generated power is available, it usually is advantageous for the mine owner to purchase rather than generate. Purchased power generally will be cheaper and more reliable than operating a small generating plant except in some cases where waste heat is available as the source of energy and can be used to supply all or a portion of the power requirements. 2. If it is decided to purchase power, the owner usually must participate in the cost of constructing the connecting line from the closest existing utility line to his point of usage. If the connected load is less than 1,000 lip, it probably is best to let the utility provide the primary substation. For larger connected loads the owner can obtain a more favorable "primary voltage" rate if he provides the primary substation to receive the incoming power and transform it to the distributing and usage voltages. 3. The cost of purchased power usually is made up of a demand charge, deter¬mined by the maximum amount of power the customer takes during any 15-min period throughout a month, and a graduated energy charge for the kilowatt-hours consumed-that is, so much for the first block of energy based on the demand,

This paper summarizes the direct operating cash costs for the Barrick Mercur open pit gold mine. A comprehensive, detailed system of cost management has been in effect for the life of the Mercur operation. This system provides the basic data for operations control and is the basis for drafting budgets as well as analyzing impact of change on operations costs. The ore body is complex geologically and metallurgically, requiring operators to pay close attention to mining and processing costs. The cost history provides data which enables analysis of changes in production levels, aging of the mine production fleet, and the impact of specific cost changes through time.

The magneto-hydrostatic method can be used today to separate slightly magnetic or non-magnetic particles according to differences in their specific gravities and magnetic susceptibilities. The classical approach is to effect stratification prior to separation. This paper discusses some of the significant parameters which bear on the design and pattern of the expected stratification in the separation cell. As the characteristics of the magnetic field, and consequently those of the magnetic forces, are determined by the geometry of the poles, this subject is treated first. In this context a new approach, whereby the range of stratification is extended, using positive as well as negative gradients, is presented. Finally, the effect of the relative size and shape of the particles on stratification is discussed.

An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

The Bureau of Mines applied a flotation model to the hydrodynamics of the Bureau-developed rapid flotation system. Rapid flotation is a process which separates the bubble-particle attachment and froth-pulp separation stages of the flotation sequence into two discrete unit operations allowing the operations to be individually optimized. Both an air-injected hydrocyclone and an in-line mixer were used as the bubble-particle attachment unit and a shallow-depth froth separator was used to separate the ore-laden froth from the pulp. A 10-L/min batch system was tested on a coarse coal feed sample. The system was tested using two different bubble-particle attachment units at various aeration levels in order to test the flotation model. The results of the flotation model reflect general trends observed in the experimental data.

Land is a precious resource and should be treated as such by all members of our society. The soil covering this earth is only a very thin outer layer, varying in thickness from a few inches to a few feet and covering the rocks and minerals lying beneath the surface. The wise use of this valuable commodity is the responsibility of everyone. Many everyday activities disturb e earth&apos;s surface. Examples are highway construction, housing and commercial developments, agriculture, and various types of mining. This chapter discusses the relationships of the environment to land as it applies to surface operations in the coal industry. Mining by surface methods disturbs, for a brief period of time, thousands of acres of land annually. In addition, refuse piles, slurry ponds, abandoned mine structures, unprotected mine openings, and unsightly cleaning plants can also adversely affect land unless properly handled.

Piles of sulfide-bearing overburden, ore, and tailings have the potential to generate acid drainage (AD) when exposed to an oxidizing environment. Laboratory column experiments were conducted using acid-generating overburden material with an added surface amendment of limestone and/or lime. Artificial rainwater was introduced and allowed to drain through the columns. Results showed that the limestone and/or lime reacted with the acidic rock, resulting in the precipitation of a hardpan layer of gypsum and amorphous iron oxy-hydroxide at the surface. The hardpan layer significantly reduced the effective permeability of the column. Based on this study, hardpan layers can be created as chemical caps to significantly reduce the infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt into acidic overburden or tailings material. Unlike traditional capping methods (for example, clay and high density polyethylene (HDPE) covers), chemical caps are self-healing.

"Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) are located within 305-m (1000-ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for mobile tent-type RAs. The results of these studies show that most of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation (51%) and conduction (31%). Three mine width/height configurations and three mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied less than 1°C (1.8°F) for the three mine width/height configurations and less than 2°C (3.6°F) for the three mine strata compositions. INTRODUCTION Following a mine disaster, workers will try to escape the mine. If their escape is futile, they can take shelter in a refuge alternative (RA). In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated RAs in mines to ensure that a safe and livable shelter is provided for a minimum of 96 hours, and that the apparent temperature (AT) does not exceed 35°C (95°F) inside the RA [1]. An ongoing concern with RAs is the potential to exceed this limit. The temperature rise inside an RA is due to the metabolic heat released by the occupants as well as heat released by the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type training unit RA in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. The 10-person capacity for the tested RA is based on 1.4 m2 (15 ft2) of floor space per miner. NIOSH-developed simulated miners, which are heat input devices that generate both sensible and latent heat, were used to represent the metabolic heat generation of an average miner (117 W) for testing in the SRCM. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. To further research temperature rise inside an RA, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. (TAI) was contracted by NIOSH to perform thermal simulations of the tested 10-person mobile tent-type RA. TAI developed a thermal model of the SRCM using RadTherm software, which incorporates a human thermal model (HTM) to represent the equivalent metabolic heat loss of a miner within the RA’s enclosed environment. The thermal model was previously validated by comparing simulation results with test results [3]. During a mine disaster in which miners would have to take shelter in an RA, mine ventilation may not be available. As such, mine ventilation was off for both the testing in the SRCM as well as in the simulations. This paper discusses the heat loss mechanisms and the effects of mine strata composition and mine width and height associated with a ten-person tent-type RA."

Improper size distribution of the grinding media in a multicompartment mill can be a source of many operation problems encountered. Inefficient use of the power expended for grinding, and an undesirable product size distribution are two frequent resultants. It is necessary to resize the grinding media in the leading mill compartment at time intervals related to the abrasive nature of the material being processed. In practice, this is done when time permits and with sketchy guidelines, if any. Maintenance of the grinding media size distribution can be scheduled, and would be, with a realistic method supplied to the user.

Little precise information is available on the effect of mining on the surface topography. It is often assumed that after mining the surface will simply sink. This is not an infallible conclusion as is well illustrated in two of the three examples herein. This paper describes the results of an attempt to precisely measure the surface movement in the area around coal pillars left in place for three oil wells in a completely mined and caved area at the Harwick Mine of the Duquesne Light Company. The dates when the various measurements were made are shown on the data sheets and indicate the rate of surface movement. These oil wells are identified as wells Nos. 2, 3, and 6. This mine property is located on the north side of the Allegheny River at Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and extends in a northerly and westerly direction about five miles. The three well pillars are situated on the westerly side of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad some 2,000 feet from Rural Ridge, Pennsylvania (Fig, 1).
