The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges such as crown and invert instability due to the overstress condition affecting the strata above, below, and in the tunnel alignment during and after TBM excavation along with the potential for methane inflow. This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

Environmental considerations are extremely important in planning and carrying out mergers, acquisitions and real estate transfers. It is not inconceivable that potential or actual environmental liabilities could exceed the targeted company's net worth or the book value of the real estate of interest. It is therefore essential that an environmental due diligence investigation (DDI) be performed to quantify environmental liabilities before sales, mergers or acquisitions. This paper will discuss general procedures used in environmental due diligence investigations. The emphasis will be placed on mergers and acquisitions. It should be pointed out that the procedures discussed in this paper are general and must be modified to fit each particular merger or acquisition under consideration.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. Minnesota's mineral resources are widespread and diverse (Figure 1). In addition to the nation's largest iron and manganese reserves, the state contains sizeable vanadium, copper, and nickel resources. Recently it has been determined that the proterozoic unconformities in Minnesota have a favorable potential for uranium deposits. Finally, major potential exists in Minnesota's archean greenstone belts for gold, silver, and copper-zinc massive sulfides. Many of the state's mineral resources have been found in environmentally sensitive areas. This is not surprising since the natural forces associated with the formation of mineral deposits are often the same processes that create unusual landforms. For example, much of the state's copper-nickel is found within and adjoining the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and Lake Superior. The history of mineral development on the Mesabi Iron Range has also created culturally sensitive areas. Early iron mining development required the workers to live close to their jobs, and mine wastes were dumped as near the mine as possible. Few, if any, foresaw the time when taconite would be economic to mine. Therefore, it is not unusual to find valuable taconite resources located under towns and waste dumps on the Mesabi Iron Range.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

Based on the geological conditions of the 15,600 working face in Pingba Mine, this paper establishes the mechanical model of the stress distribution in the pre-working face under the influence of mining pressure based on a hemispherical stress distribution theory. The analytical formula for the stress distribution is determined. A numerical model for the mining pressure under the influence of key layer is also constructed, and dynamic stress interruptions under various roof-cutting relief schemes in different horizontal positions are simulated. The stress distribution of the stope under different pressure relief schemes is analyzed and compared with the theoretical results. Results show that blasting roof cutting blocks the transmission of the abutment pressure to the working surface to the coal and rock mass in front of the working face, reducing the significant working face mining pressure influence range, which decreases as blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working face. Stress accumulation in the coal in front of the working face also increases as the blasting pressure relief position moves toward the working surface. Engineering practice results show that blasting cutting can effectively block the propagation of mining pressure, and the stress impact range is shortened by approximately 1/3.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. Successful collaboration of Owner, Owner’s Engineer, Contractor and Contractor’s Engineer led to a safe and cost-effective design and construction

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."

To many people, rescue from elevated, sometimes vertical, locations brings about thoughts of heroism mixed with brawn and self-sacrifice. Images are conjured of cliff rescues where the technical effort is hanging from a few seemingly small nylon ropes hundreds of feet above the ground. Such is the vertical realm of technical rope rescue. This is a technical field in which the author serves professionally as battalion chief of (rope) operations for a northern Arizona fire district, and as a private sector instructor to mines in the United States and Canada.

The nature, usage and comparatively rare occurrence of ball clay is described. The importance of these white firing plastic clays in ceramics, particularly in the production of industrial sanitary ware and tiles, is emphasized. The US deposits are briefly discussed. What is known about relevant deposits in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela (the four largest ceramic producers in South America) is also described. The ceramic plants have been sited near the centers of population rather than the plastic clay deposits. At present, extraction is probably concentrated on surface residual deposits and lenses which require minimum investment. Native plastic clays are used exclusively in the tile plants, but in sanitary ware, they are often used as extenders of imported ball clays.

Maintenance strategy selection plays a significant role in mining design. The nature of maintenance strategy selection is a complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both tangible and intangible parameters which are often in conflicting with each other. Moreover, when decision makers are uncertain in determining and defining the ratings and the weights of alternatives and criteria respectively, fuzzy theory provides an appropriate tool to handle the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy MCDM method based on the concepts of TOPSIS and AHP was proposed to evaluate the feasible maintenance strategy. The linguistic terms are employed to assess the ratings and weights. Fuzzy AHP is utilized to calculate the weights of the evaluation criteria; then, the rankings of alternatives are computed based on fuzzy sets theory and TOPSIS. A real world case study is presented to illustrate a potential application of the proposed model.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

A gravimetric method for measuring rates of capillary rise in powders was explored. Methods to improve reproducibility and consistency of the results were investigated. In particular, the effects of particle size and packing uniformity were addressed. Studies of the wetting behavior of both spherical glass beads and irregularly shaped synthetic graphite particles by various organic liquids were carried out. Standardized procedures for bed preparation are described. The applicability of the Washburn equation for surface energy evaluation in such systems is discussed.

In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) found in dust generated by various mining processes is an important occupational hazard in the underground coal-mining industry. Exposure can lead to disabling and incurable diseases, including coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis and lung cancer [1,2]. Clusters of rapidly progressive CWP have been observed in the Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, and recent cases have been generally more severe and showing more rapid progression. CWP is approximately four times as common among long-tenured underground coal miners in central Appalachia than long-tenured underground miners in the rest of the United States, and 20.6 percent of long-tenured underground miners in central Appalachia were suffering from the disease as of 2017.

Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.
