In recent years the procedures for functionally designing bulk storage bins and hoppers have evolved from qualitative guess and try methods to a quantative method based on theory and tests of the bulk solid to be stored. This quantative method, developed and implemented by Dr.'s A. W. Jenike and J. R. Johanson as with any new design, must prove its effectiveness and validity in the actual operation of the finished equipment. How accurate are the theoretical predictions? Is it possible to extrapolate from bench size tests on a small ample of the bulk solid to the full scale bin design? Can the theoretical designs be economically translated into working hardware? In this paper the answers to these questions are discussed in light of actual bin operations.

Critical path modeling (CPM) has been used widely as a tool to manage large-scale projects having many activities which are conducted in series or parallel. The construction industry is a regular user of critical path modeling as a planning tool. In this context, the method is used to provide an orderly schedule for all activities to forecast delays, slippages, and problem areas and to identify critical activities where resources should be directed. It also identifies others which have slack time, and provides information on the degrees of freedom and flexibility available in completing the project. The purpose of applying critical path modeling to an underground mining system is not primarily for scheduling, but as an analysis tool. In observing underground mining systems, it Is clear that repeated sequences of activities must take place for mining to proceed efficiently. Some of these activities must be sequential, while others be carried out in parallel. The fundamental difference between critical path modeling applied to mining versus a large-scale construction project are: (1) The activities in a mining system are cyclic in nature. (2) The location of the activity varies, and the entire process is not thought of as co-located, as is the case in a construction project. Another important aspect of the network development for mining systems is the degree of detail that is desired. One can be concerned with very macroscopic networks which represent, for example, an entire mine life cycle. Networks representing this problem would be more closely analogous to those of a large construction project. On the other hand, one might be interested in evaluating alternative ways of developing a property or of mining in a given section. More detailed networks representing the section activities are necessary to evaluate system parameters and their impact on long-term production.

To minimize SO2 emission and the particulate problem during combustion of high sulfur coal fines is to agglomerate these fines in the presence of limestone. At subsequent combustion process, the sulfur in coal is oxidized and reacts with calcined limestone to form calcium sulfate in ash, while the base carbon is converted to clean energy. Seventy percent of sulfur retention can be achieved at Ca/S mole ratio of 3 at a temperature range of 500-400°C. The sulfur fixation in agglomerates involves the complex mass transfer and multiple successive reactions. The rate expressions have been developed to describe the progress of sulfur fixation in the agglomerates during combustion.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

The president and US Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt continue to bypass Congress in their efforts leave an environmental legacy when they leave office in a year. So the mining industry must take its case to the public. And the public seems willing to listen if the industry is willing to tell its story, according to US Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT). Cannon was one of the keynote speakers at the105th meeting of the Northwest Mining Association, in Spokane, WA. The production sequence optimization of open pit mine is a procedure that reflects the exploitation conditions over life of mine. These conditions are determined by the geological characteristics of the deposit, requirements of the mining and processing technologies and economic parameters of the exploitation. From a technological point of view the production sequence optimization deals with two aspects - spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the problem. This paper treats the time aspect of the production sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of the problem of the working zone formation of the open pit mine in time. The problem formulation places an accent on the determination of the theoretically possible time distribution of the waste and ore quantities of each bench of the open pit mine. A mathematical solution to the problem has been developed based on combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the production sequencing with the use of an optimization model developed as a linear programming formulation. The model objective function uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the effectiveness of production sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of Assarel copper open pit mine (Bulgaria) to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the mining factor.

[Commonly accepted maintenance methods are being outdated by the rapid acceptance and use of more complicated hydraulic circuitry on modern mining equipment. It is no longer adequate to use the maintenance program to merely repair or sustain equipment operation. Ever increasing operating costs place a huge premium on lost production time. It has, therefore, placed the maintenance programs in the position of being required to alleviate equipment malfunctions on production shifts and still attain the maximum unit life from each component part.]

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum will hold its Ninth Annual Induction Banquet Sept. 8, 1996, at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. Six mining greats, two of them living, will be enshrined at the event. They will join 126 other mining legends previously honored by the hall of fame. The keynote speaker will be William Perry Pendley, president and chief legal officer of Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver, CO. Jeffrey Zelms, president and chief executive officer of The Doe Run Co., will be master of ceremonies. Richard Swayne, regional director USA for Boart Longyear Co. of Salt Lake City, UT, will introduce the speakers. Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources Corp. and chairman of the Mining Hall of Fame’s board of governors, will enshrine the inductees.

Handling of fine coal is an importance issue for coal as well as the utility industry. Reconstitution in form of pellet or briquet would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders e.g., asphalt- emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, in forming pellets of ultra-fine clean coal. It was found that asphalt emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders for ultra-fine clean coal, however, Brewex provided excellent quality of pellets, which exceeded all the minimum quasi requirements of coal pellets. INTRODUCTION Advanced coal preparation techniques (physical or chemical) are designed to process ultra-fine (minus 200 mesh or 74 pm) coal. The average particle size of the clean coal product is about 25 pm. Currently available dewatering techniques are effective in providing a 25 to 30 percent moisture product of this size coal slurry (Parekh et al. 1989). Handling and utilization of this dewatered ultra-fine size coal is difficult. Reconstitution, which includes pelletization, briquetting, extrusion, etc., of the dewatered coal product provides an ideal answer to handling and transportation problems. However, reconstitution of fines in the coal industry has not been successful due to various reasons. The most important criterion for its unsuccessful application in the coal industry is the cost of the binder (Capes et al. 1965). Various methods of reconstitution, such as briquetting, disk pelletization, extrusion pelletization and roller and die-pelletization, have been tested for fine coal agglomeration (Conkle et al., 1991) (Richards, 1990). Conkle et al., (1992) have provided a detail analysis of each technique in terms of moisture and operating cost requirements. According to Conkle, briquetting requires a product containing very low moisture, whereas pelletization can be done with coal containing up to 30 percent moisture. Currently available dewatering technique provides about 25 percent moisture product, thus, pelletization appears to be an ideal route for reconstitution. In this paper, results are presented on the comparison of three different binders i.e., asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewers condensed solids (BCS or Brewex), for fine coal pelletization.

In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. The dewatering commitment must be made well in advance. Construction of wells, and pumping down take time. After the heading reaches a trouble area, time is not available

"INTRODUCTION In underground longwall coal mining, the mined-out areas or gobs frequently contain methane which can form explosive methane-air mixtures. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of such explosive mixtures, herein referred to as Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs), inside and around the perimeter of bleeder-ventilated longwall gobs (Loane et al., 1975; Lynn et al., 1986; Elkins, et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001; Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012; Brune, 2013). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Several factors can induce EGZs outflowing from the gob, but the most common cause is the fluctuating barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Other sudden pressure changes can result from roof falls, failing ventilation controls and fan outages. Any such fluctuation of mine ventilation pressure will disturb the pressure differential between the gob and the surrounding mine workings and may cause EGZs to outgas from the gob. The correlation between major mine explosions and abrupt barometric pressure changes has been studied and confirmed for explosions in coal mining countries including the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Poland (Hosler, 1948; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Hemp, 1994; Wasilewski, 2014; Belle, 2014; and Lolon, 2017). Disastrous mine explosions appear to happen more frequently during stormy weather, which, in the United States, typically occurs during the late fall and winter seasons. ROOT CAUSE AND EFFECT OF GOB BREATHING Gob breathing is the result of the pressure differential between gob internal and external pressures caused by external atmospheric pressure fluctuations that occur naturally as a result of gravitational and thermal forces in the atmosphere (Lindzen and Chapman, 1969). Other major and sudden pressure changes may be caused by fan failures, failures of ventilation controls or roof falls can also cause an unexpected gob breathing. Normal barometric fluctuations occur every day but usually do not pose an explosion risk as they occur gradually so gob pressures have sufficient time to equilibrate. More extreme fluctuations associated with cyclonic weather systems and storms often result in more rapid and larger drops or rises in barometric pressure (Hosler, 1948; Fauconnier, 1992). A study by Lolon (2017) found that the timing of historical mine explosions showed consistency with the occurrence of abrupt and intense barometric variations."

A ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system includes three intake and six exhaust shafts, and three surface axial fans ventilate the mine in a blowing configuration. Airflow quantity, pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics were quantified, and the influence of moving cages and skips in the shaft examined. The benefits of utilizing high-accuracy digital pressure transducers and advanced psychrometers were seen when undertaking a “leapfrogging” survey to gather data needed to build a computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFDs are idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model was used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study was conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next 15 years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

While the oil shale resources of the US are becoming increasingly known, few people in this country are aware of the extensive worldwide occurrence of this resource. Two recent international conferences* confirmed the growing worldwide interest in oil shales, both as future and current energy sources. The 1981 conference noted the difficulty in characterizing worldwide oil shale resources because of lack of common terminology in reporting both assay value and resource potential. Assay value is variously reported as: •US gallons per short ton; •Imperial gallons per metric ton; •Liters per metric ton; •Liters per cubic meter; •Weight percent oil; and •Volume percent oil. Oil shale resources are variously reported in barrels, short tons of oil shale, metric tons of oil shale, and cubic meters of shale oil. Worldwide petroleum shortages sparked interest in alternate energy resources including oil shales. While petroleum supplies appear to have stabilized, at least for a while, high costs are affecting the balance of payment index of many countries, resulting in a continued search for local energy resources. Kerogen is the organic constituent of oil shale and may be the most abundant form of hydrocarbon on earth, possibly exceeding coal occurrences and far more abundant than naturally-occurring petroleum resources. Oil shale, by one name or another, is widespread and is known to exist in more than 38 countries (Table 1). Oil shale industries have existed in at least 14 countries at one time or another. Many predated the Drake oil discovery in Pennsylvania in 1859, and most were unable to compete with natural oil; these operations either converted to its use or closed. At the present time shale oil is being produced on a commercial scale only in the USSR and in China. Only very rough estimates of grade and quantity are available for most of the worldwide shale occurrences since only a few deposits have been thoroughly explored. The Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is an exception. For many years this oil shale deposit has been described as the largest single concentration of hydrocarbon material in the world. With increasing world interest, larger deposits may yet be found. In 1965, the US Geological Survey published an in-place world oil shale estimate. This study, while made some 16 years ago, is still a reasonable order-of-magnitude estimate. Although exploration and evaluation are underway and a few oil shale deposits have been appraised, information on which to evaluate most worldwide oil shale occurrences has improved little since 1965. The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

Jaspilite, a mineral consisting of silica and iron oxide in varying proportions, is one of the host rocks of the high grade ore deposits situated in the Middleback Range of South Australia. As a result of laboratory investigations, a flowsheet was postulated for the beneficiation of jaspilite to produce an acceptable grade product for feeding to blast furnaces, The flowsheet involved the reduction of the hematite in the haspilite to magnetite, the grinding of the reduced product to 95 pct minus 325 mesh Tyler followed by wet magnetic separation, hydroseparation and filtration to yield a magnetite concentrate. Agglomeration of the fine concentrate would then be necessary to meet the physical requirements of blast furnace feed. To prove the postulated flowsheet, to obtain a more accurate estimate of costs and to obtain design data for a commercial installation, a pilot plant was constructed at Whyalla, South Australia.

The coagulation of dispersions of weakly magnetic oxide mineral ultrafines (such as natural hematite or chromite) in an external magnetic field can be described from inter-particle forces. Essentially, coagulation occurs when the short range London-van der Waals interactions and the long range magnetic forces outweigh the stabilizing electrical double layer repulsion. From the classical colloid chemistry theory, we have calculated the various components of the potential energy for different sized particles at a series of ionic strengths and magnetic field intensities. We have related this theoretical analysis to experimental studies where the magnetic field-induced coagulation of ultrafines of natural hematite and chromite in aqueous suspensions was investigated using a laboratory scale electromagnetic solenoid. The experimental results relate the coagulation process (as determined by magneto-sedimentation analysis) to the particle size, the slurry pH and the external magnetic field. In the magnetic fields, maximum coagulation occurred near the pH of zero point of charge (pHzpc) of the minerals (where the electrostatic double layer repulsion was reduced to a minimum) enabling the particles to enter the "primary minimum" energy sink. On the other hand, in cases where the electrostatic repulsion was not suppressed, then the long range magnetic forces enabled coagulation to occur in the "secondary minimum". This caused the formation of chains which appeared to be relatively stable during sedimentation.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.
