In this paper fires due to spontaneous combustion in Middle Anatolian Lignite mine (OAL) which is the first fully mechanized underground lignite mine in Turkey, are studied. Since the installation of mechanization (1986), due to spontaneous heating, four panel fires namely, A01, A02, A03 and A04 have broken out. During these fires, the concentrations of carbon monoxide, methane and the velocity of air are measured continuously by the Micro Minos Environmental monitoring system. For each fire, the environment where fire has started is examined and the possible causes of the fire are investigated. Also the precautions taken to extinguish the fire at different stages are described and the importance of the early detection of mine fire are discussed together with the limitations of the monitoring system and the practical difficulties observed during the fire.

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

Conventional disposal of waste rock results in the construction of benches with fine and coarse layers dipping at the angle of repose. This interbedded structure influences flow pathways within the waste rock. A numerical modeling program was conducted to study a four-layer system consisting of alternating fine and coarse waste rock. The system was inclined from the vertical to forty-five degrees with heights varying from one to twenty meters. The results show the effects of gravity as preferential flow developed under unsaturated flow conditions.

Assuming a number of discrete leakage paths and treating the airflow through leaky duct line as a series-parallel combination of airflows along the duct and through leakage paths, exact solutions for auxiliary ventilation problems can be obtained. A computer program "SEGMENT'' has been written to solve problems using this method. However, most of the investigators have treated the duct lines with a uniformly distributed leakage and many have derived formulas assuming various boundary conditions and levels of simplification for the design of a simple auxiliary ventilation system An appraisal of accuracy of the various formulas has been conducted using the results from the program "SEGMENT' as benchmark and the formulas which give accurate results have been identified. The ranges of application for all the formulas have also been determined for 5 %error.

It was previously reported that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, a Florida dolomite sample was examined, and it was determined that palygorskite associated with dolomite was responsible for its flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of dolomite samples from different locations was made by electrokinetic, XRD and FT-IR analyses, and the relevance of these characteristics to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

A popular perception by the public and many mining claimants, is that the 1872 Mining Law provides a statutory right to mine and extract minerals from the public lands. This perception in reality, is both true and false, depending on the mining claimants' ability to meet federal and state environmental, cultural and endangered species laws. Land use decisions and proposed legislation affect exploration and development opportunities in California. It is imperative that the mining industry involve itself in the planning process to ensure that BLM decision makers are fully informed of industry's knowledge and concerns. STATUTORY RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS "No other problem has such a sense of urgency and poses as profound consequences to the quality of life and the creation and distribution of societal wealth as how we protect the environment. Certainly, the environment is the single biggest issue facing mining and mineral activities in the new decade. David S. Brown The 1872 Mining Law was passed, ironically, the same year the nation's first National Park was established. It is a perception that the establishment of Yellowstone National Park was the beginning of the United States' earliest environmental movement; brought on, perhaps, by the rapid clearing of land for homesteading purposes and, the concern that many acres of the public domain were being disposed of through a multitude of public land laws. While there was an effort being made to designate some special and unique public lands as parks for preservation purposes, environmental concern and awareness did not lead to mandatory identification of environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation until the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1970. Consequently, it is not surprising that the original United States Mining Laws of 1866, 1870 and 1872 had no mention of environmental protection. There have been numerous attempts to repeal the 1872 Mining Law over the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. Currently, there is a perception by the general public, media and even some in congress, the mining industry and BLM that a change is needed. The environmental organizations want the industry to be more accountable for reclamation and post mining uses. In Tn nEnvironmental Agenda for the Future," leaders of America's foremost environmental organizations state that the mining law "includes no protection for the environment," and therefore, should be reformed. We can all acknowledge, as stated above, that the mining law, per se, requires no "protection. However, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) clearly has the authority and the responsibility to fully "protect" non-mineral resources while providing for the extraction and processing of mineral resources by private industry. There are about 13 major federal laws that have indirectly or directly amended the mining laws to require Environmental, Historic and Cultural Protection." There have been many mining law case decisions about the statutory and constitutional rights of miners to explore open federal lands, "stake a claimg" and extract minerals. What needs to be fully understood is how federal laws, as enumerated on Table 1, may affect these rights. What follows is a description of

11.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some of the selection and design considerations for leach pads and liners. Leach pads and liners are generally chosen to provide the required or desired levels of low permeability and foundation conditions at minimum cost. The selection and design of a particular liner depends upon its anticipated use and performance, and what materials may be available. A leach pad is the firm base for a heap. When geomembrane liners are used, the pad is the firm, compacted foundation upon which the liner is placed. In the case of a clay liner, the clay liner is usually also the pad. It is important to consider the design of a pad or liner in terms of a system. The "leach pad system" consists of the prepared foundation, bedding layer (if used), liner (s), seepage collection or detection layer (if used), and cover layer. Foundation preparation is necessary to ensure a stable base for the rest of the leach pad system. A bedding layer is used to protect a liner from being punctured by large angular fragments in the foundation material. A seepage collection or detection layer, consisting of well-drained material and (sometimes) pipes draining to a collection sump, is included when a double liner is used. A cover layer on top of the liner can serve the following purposes (van Zyl and Strachan, 1986): • Preventing of ultraviolet light exposure to sensitive geomembranes; • Limiting evaporation from compacted clay liners and thereby eliminating cracking of such liners; • More efficient collecting of leachate; and • Protecting the liner from damage during heap construction. Economic evaluations of alternative liners for a project must include the overall system. For example, a geomembrane liner may require different foundation preparation and cover material selection and placement than a clay liner. Liners can be made of compacted clay onsite, amended soil, or geomembranes. The influence of surfactants on the crystallization of calcium sulfate was investigated in both hatch and continuous systems. The investigation was per formed at the following conditions. 343 °K, 28% P205 and with a sulfate level of 2.0%. At concentrations of 5 and 200 µgig, respectively, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSH) and sodium diisooctil sulosuccinate (SSNa) promoted both an increase in the size and a reduction in the length/width (L/W) ratio of the calcium sulfate hydrates produced in the hatch and continuous crystallizers. Unique effects were observed in the batch system at higher DBSH concentrations. At 10 µg/g, the precipitation of hemihydrate crystals with a distinct morphology and texture occurred under conditions where dihydrate precipitation was expected. Above 50 µg/g, the precipitation of calcium sulfate hydrates was completely inhibited.

Mine maintenance planning, scheduling and daily workflow communications are crucial elements for enhancing overall efficiency and reducing costs. Equally important, it helps identify time periods that equipment will be unavailable so conflicts with production demands are avoided. The current CMMS Kennecott Energy Corporation (KEC) utilizes does not perform these functions in an effective manner. A solution to this problem was to develop an intuitive web-based maintenance planning, scheduling and work flow system call E-MESA. This paper will discuss the E-MESA'S system structure and advantages and disadvantages of using the web based E-MESA solution to perform the maintenance functions described above.

This paper describes the results of field tests conducted on a 5x25m bench face to evaluate several new concepts for improving smooth wall blasting. These ideas involved the use of notched boreholes to direct the fractures and unconventional types and placements of explosives. The notches were made with a mechanical broaching tool, a water jet and with shaped charges. Borehole pressures were measured with an inexpensive and expendable pressure transducer developed for this program. The testing showed that at hole spacings 38% greater than normal practice, notched holes with half the normal loading density produced equivalent results.

Copper and gold were discovered in the Copper Canyon area of the Battle Mountain district of Lander County, Nevada, in August of 1866. By 1876 a gravity plant was con¬centrating oxidized Copper Canyon copper-gold ores. The history of mining in the district to 1967 has been summarized by John E. Frost (in press) as a case history of the discovery of the Battle Mountain porphyry copper deposits. His summary is not repeated here; rather, the present case history covers exploration since 1967, primarily for gold ores. Subsequent to the construction by Duval of facilities to mine the porphyry copper deposits in 1967, Duval established a geologic staff at the mine to continue district exploration. The staff was guided by David W. Blake, who acted as chief geologist for Duval's exploration in this part of Nevada. Blake's activities led to the publication of numerous technical articles, including his contribution to the US Geological Survey Professional Paper 798-B. A part of that volume is attached as a reprint (pages 23 through 66) as an explanation of the geological setting of mineralization in the district. The work by Blake and his staff recognized metal zonation in the skarn environment at Copper Canyon, and their studies were incorporated in the development of the Tomboy-Minnie gold deposits that are peripheral to the porphyry. Exploration continued beyond the immediate vicinity of the porphyry and the Fortitude ore zones were discovered. These skarn deposits are described in the attached article by Wotruba, Benson, and Schmidt, published in the July 1986, MINING ENGINEERING. The continued exploration successes at Battle Mountain reflect on the well organized and effective exploration team developed at the mine. The team has provided successive discoveries in a district known mostly for ore bodies that are exhausted in a few years' time.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

Aeration curing, over- a long duration in wet- red stockpiles, shows promise as an affordable pretreatment method for oxidizing gold encapsulating sulfide minerals, and possibly organic matter, in low grade refractory ores. Following aeration pretreatment, the ore is reclaimed, neutralized, and cyanide leached by conventional practices. Large tonnages of subeconomic material, including mine stripping waste, may he converted into ore by this new technology. The results presented show that a successful application of this technology will likely require crushing to about -2 cm (-3/4 in.), followed by aeration in a wet stockpile for long periods, up m three years. Natural convection may he inadequate, hut forced air ventilation, at modest pressures and power consumption, is affordable.

A PC image-based, on-line coarse particle size analysis system is being developed for the control of crushing and grinding circuits. Initial results had indicated that the system is accurate when tested with irregularly shaped particles which are stationary and do not overlap with each other. Now the system has been successfully tested in the dynamic mode with a moving belt conveyor. On-line size analysis for actual plant operations is discussed and includes: (1) the video system with respect to lighting and data acquisition requirements for a rapidly moving belt and, (2) image sampling, specifically the number of observations needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set.

This paper proposes a new methodology to model ill- defined processing operations using neural nets (NN's). A process with many variables (large dimensionality) cannot be modelled adequately if limited process data are available. This problem of multi-dimensionality is addressed and an approach suggested to reduce the dimensionality using NN's. The result of this modelling methodology is a combined model of phenomenological expressions and NN's. The model can successfully be incorporated in a dynamic simulator of the process. A new approach to conduct modelling on the basis of continuous data collected directly from an industrial processing unit, is also proposed. The modelling methodology is applied to a typical processing operation, the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process.

Fine coal particles are difficult to separate effectively from liquids or other solids. Ultrasonic energy may be used to enhance the efficiency of the conventional fine-particle separation processes widely used in the coal and mineral industries. Flotation, settling and dewatering tests were conducted using several fine coal samples to study the effects of ultrasonic treatment on these processes. Process variables such as particle size, ultrasonic treatment time and solids concentration were investigated for their impacts on ultrasonic treatment effectiveness. The results obtained from this study showed that ultrasonic treatment is an effective approach for enhancing solid/solid separation in flotation and solid/liquid separation in sedimentation and dewatering of fine coal. SEM microphotographs demonstrate that ultrasonics cleaned particle surfaces, which is, in part, responsible for the observed improvement in fine coal separation processes.

Modes of microbial attack of metal carbonates, metal silicates, metal oxides and metal sulfides are summarized. The current status of microbial redox mechanisms, whereby metals in metal oxides and sulfides are mobilized, is discussed. Opposing theories of a single mode of attack involving interaction with a microbially produced reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase and of dual modes of attack involving a reaction requiring physical contact between microbe and mineral surface on the one hand and microbial production of a reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase that reacts with the mineral on the other hand are considered. No one mode when finally completely unraveled should be expected to fit all cases. Some biochemical, electronmicroscopic and spectrophotometric approaches for elucidation of missing details of different modes are suggested. This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later it will semiautomate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide the section foreman with real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units. This data will allow the section foreman to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and in-mine testing results from the first phase are now available.
