Metal recovery from solution, i.e., the formation of a solid product from a purified aqueous electrolyte solution, is increasingly becoming more than a simple matter of bulk precipitation. In many cases, operating conditions must be carefully manipulated to control the rate and yield of the precipitation/crystallization process, as well as the purity and physical characteristics of the solid product. A review is presented of the underlying physico-chemical processes, with emphasis on solution and interfacial chemistry. Opportunities for the integration of hydrometallurgical metal recovery and materials processing operations are discussed.

Historical methods of designing steel cord belt splices are compared with modern finite element modeling (FEM) methods. Dependence of the belt strength rating on the splice dynamic fatigue strengths is reviewed. A number of splice schematics are examined, using simple spring theory and FEM methods. Steel cord wire rope design is discussed. The importance of the insulation gum rubber properties and their splice dimensional factors and tolerances are analyzed. Splice fatigue lie analysis procedure is reviewed. This may be used to predict splice life or time of failure, depending on how the conveyor belt is operated.

The objective of this study is to provide potential users of booster fans in coal mines with the necessary information on monitoring and control of fans and environmental factors. The guide-lines listed in this paper were formulated based on the current practice of mine monitoring, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations on environmental monitoring, and the United Kingdom's National Coal Board recommendations on the use of booster fans. The principles involved in the design of booster fans as well as the provisions needed to guarantee a safe operation of these units, are illustrated by means of an example problem. The example includes a summary of costs for two ventilation systems: a conventional surface fan system and a fully automated booster fan alternative. A comparison of these costs showed that significant gains may be attained by selecting a combined surface-booster fan strategy over a conventional surface fan alternative.

The driving force behind most advances in technology is need. In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

At this time in the history of engineering and construction, cost indexes give weekly evidence of the sharply rising costs of labor and materials. Paralleling the rise in construction costs are the costs of plant maintenance. Automation of the modern industrial plant has permitted a substantial reduction in the total number of employees required for plant operation. Of this reduced total, however, up to one-half of the employees may be engaged in plant maintenance. Management's decision to risk investment capital for a pro- posed plant or improvement is increasingly dependent upon the engineer's ingenuity in designing plant systems and structures which will require a minimum of materials and labor for manufacture, installation, and operation and which will be maintenance-free to a maximum degree. This paper concerns itself with the structural elements of bulk material handling systems in which the foregoing factors influenced the design to a considerable extent.

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

Mineral liberation modeling can be traced back to the early work 0fA.M. Gaudin up through more recent population balance modeling by R.p. King, J.A. Herbst and G.T. Adel. A more micro-scopic look was taken at the University of Utah in the form of the J.E. Sepulveda and J.D. Miller Pargen model which permits the creation of an arbitrary shape, multiphase particle made up of discrete grains. Recent work on image analysis and tomographic analysis by J.D. Miller and C.L. Lin have laid the experimental ground work for model validation, but until now it hasn't been possible to include the necessary physics of the particle stressing process to allow the development of a 'ffirstprinciples"mode1 which does not presuppose a "mode” of liberation (e.g., random or by detachment). Recent developments in discrete grain breakage (DGB) modeling now make a generalized physics based model feasible. This paper describes current work that is being done to develop a physics based discrete grain liberation (DGL) model. Two-dimensional and three dimensional simulation results exploring the effects of particle size, phase properties and loading type are presented. Relationships between energy based liberation efficiency, degree of random liberation and material properties are identified.

Complex sulphide ores usually require very fine grinding of the whole ore stream to achieve adequate liberation. Recent improvements to DSM screens have made this device appear competitive with cyclones in circuits treating these ores. A DSM screen and cyclones were tested in pilot-scale grinding of a copper, lead, zinc ore and the resultant data were used to establish a multi-component simulation model. The model was used to assess the influences of mill environment, circuit flows and pulp densities, final product properties (size, relative size and SG of the values, and liberation characteristics) and a second grinding circuit on capacity and product size distributions, and hence define conditions for which one device is better than the other.

[An innovative framework is proposed which most efficiently and systematically handles the large quantity of information needed for equipment failure and other non-performance analyses. It is based on the accepted engineering dimensions of mass (material), length (geometry), and time (MLT). To these are added human and machine factor. Several failure "Modes" are identified for each dimension, which are then subdivided into specific "Types". Material Failure Modes such as Separation and Slip are easily recognized, but others had to be established. Geometric Failure Modes are usually straight-forward, Obvious ones include Geometrics Design and Stability with more synthesized. Time Failure Modes are again largely self-evident such as Life and Chemical Effects, others are needed. Human and Machine Factors as failure modes are loosely assembled. The results contain strengths, but also organizational weaknesses which are noted. Lacking a better alternative its use is recommended.]

About 1.41 kt (45.2 million oz) of gold have been ! produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Mining is promoted as an industry while prevention of pollution is required along with reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) system of "one-stop shop- ping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process. It fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Paha Sapa means "Hills that are Black" in Dakota Sioux. Appearing dark from a distance due to a thick forest of Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills were gold to many people. The exact date that gold was discovered in the Black Hills remains debatable. An inscribed stone tablet found in 1887 near Spearfish recorded these words:

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

The historic Getchell property, near Golconda, NV, is being mined from the Getchell Main Under- ground workings, a footwall extension of the Getchell open-pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is under development by two vertical shafts. These two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 2.9 ktld (3,200 stpd) mill/autoclave circuit. This will take Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) to more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) by 1999.

Batch laboratory-scale beneficiation tests were conducted on four high-iron phosphate samples. These samples included sedimentary ores (Tilemsi Valley, Mali and Tahoua, Niger), a sample from an igneous phosphate deposit (Matongo, Burundi), and a fine-grained phosphatic iron ore processing residue from Chile. The Matongo phosphate deposit occurs as a thick (up to 80 m) residual blanket of P205-enriched soil over solid parent rock (carbonatite and associated rock types). Although the Matongo deposit is an igneous deposit, ore from the deposit can be subjected to beneficiation treatments commonly used to treat sedimentary rocks. The beneficiation flowsheets designed to process these diverse ore types involve attrition scrubbing, size classification, and flotation. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.0%-39.0% P205 and 1.0%-1.5% Fe2O3, were obtained at 64.2%-82.2% overall P2O5 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 9.2%-28.6% P205 and 5.9%-16.1% F,20,. A cleaner phosphate concentrate assaying 33.1% P205, 1.8% A1203, and 3.3% Fe2O3 at 53.4% overall P205 recovery was obtained from the phosphatic iron ore residue that originally contained 4.5% P205, 8.0% A1203, and 17.6% Fe2O3.

Definitions and Terminology Classification is defined within this section as the separation of solid particles into size or weight fractions or classes by differential settling through a fluid. It is usually thought of as a size separation, but is actually made on the basis of particle settling rate, and so is affected by any variations in particle density and shape. The fluid may be liquid (wet classification) or gas (dry or air classification). This section will treat only wet classification. There are two basic types of classification; pool and hydraulic. In pool classification a suspension of feed particles is fed into and out of a pool of some kind at such a rate that only part of them¬ the coarser and faster-settling part-has time to settle out. The remain¬der overflows as fines. In hydraulic classification the feed suspension is introduced into or above one or more columns or pockets through which water is rising at a controlled velocity. Coarse particles subside through the pockets and are removed through spigots. Those which settle slower than the rising velocity in any column or pocket are (at least ideally) prevented from subsiding and so must overflow. Hydraulic classifiers or sizers are capable of making far sharper sepa¬rations than pool classifiers. The force causing settling may be gravity, or alternatively may be from centrifugal acceleration as developed in a centrifuge or hydra cyclone. Two things are needed to characterize the separation produced by classification: first, the size, D„ or equivalently the screen mesh at which it is made; second the sharpness of separation. Separation size may be defined in various ways. In closed-circuit grinding it is commonly specified by some point in the overflow screen analysis: For example, 5% on 65 mesh. INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.
