During the last decade, many exhaustive studies have been made of process energy requirements for the production of various metals and materials. Some excellent technical papers and text books have resulted, and some of these are included in the bibliography of this paper. These studies were, of course, prompted by the economic pressures which resulted from the beginning of the "Energy Crisis" in 1973. Our intensified consciousness of the cost of energy led, then, to a greatly improved understanding of the energy consumption attributable to individual mining, processing, and refining steps. It is worth noting, however, that an awareness of the cost of energy is not new and that efforts to minimize this cost were an important part of sound mine and plant management practice throughout the earlier days of our industry. One only has to read a few accounts of mining operations around the beginning of this century to develop an appreciation for the cost of supplying wood, coal, fuel oil, or electric power to remote locations.

Nested pit analysis in open-pit long range mine planning is used to define approximate ultimate pit limits and an initial high-level schedule in the early stages of a project. Modern ultimate pit optimizers can solve for dozens, or even hundreds, of nested pits however often a smaller subset of pits which are evenly spaced with respect to contained tonnage are desired for downstream analysis. In situations where that pushback selection process must be automated, such as when performing sensitivity analysis, or when the best subset of pushbacks is required; an optimization procedure is warranted. This paper describes a dynamic programming algorithm for selecting pushbacks following nested pit analysis, which is performant and addresses a long-standing inconvenience faced by long range open-pit mine planners.

Recent sinkhole activity in carbonate terranes of Alabama has resulted in damage to transportation lines, structures, utility lines, and property in general. Active sinkhole development and subsidence has been well documented in Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, and South Africa. An excellent example of the potential danger resulting from this activity is the spectacular collapse under a South African gold ore crusher plant that resulted in the death of 29 men in 1962. Due to the severity of the problem in certain localized areas in Alabama, a detailed investigation is being undertaken by the Geological Survey of Alabama and the U. S. Geological Survey. One of the most promising techniques is the application of aerial photography and thermal infrared imagery. Conventional and modern remote-sensing techniques are being used in Alabama to locate and define areas of sinkhole activity and to determine which areas are most prone to its occurrence.

Even though the title of this paper is quite long, the ideas presented herein are very simple. In fact, it occurs to me to be somewhat humble about coming before such a distinguished group with such a simple presentation. However, the application of these ideas has proven useful in at least two copper flotation plants. The purpose in presenting this paper is to inspire some interest in the great stores of data chat the Mining Industry often accumulates without making any attempt at analysis. Unfortunately, many milling engineers rely rather heavily on percent recovery as a strict measure of a concentrator's relative performance. The fallacy of this reasoning is not difficult to see since, by definition, percent recovery is a function of feed assay, tails; and concentrate grade. If copper tailing is constant, and it very nearly is for a strictly sulfide copper ore, percent recovery must fluctuate almost directly to the feed assay. The point that I wish to make here is that it is very seldom justified to compare the percent recovery figure from one period of time to another without considering the difference in feed assay. The problem of comparing results is even further complicated when the ores are of mixed oxide and sulfide mineralogy.

Computer based dispatching in open pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits, depending on the operation, include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini and micro computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible even a few years ago. Here we discuss many of these recent developments with emphasis on system aspects and dispatching algorithms.

The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

The role of ZnSO4 in activation of sphalerite (ZnS) and deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite has been investigated. Adsorption of metallic ions at the solid-solution interface, electrokinetic results for sphalerite under different chemical conditions, and thermodynamic calculations were used to elucidate the mechanisms involved. It is shown that flotation response of sphalerite in absence of activators is rather weak and that adsorption of ethyl xanthate on the mineral mainly electrostatic in nature. Zinc sulfate is found to activate the mineral but only in a narrow acidic pH range. This is attributed to the increase of zeta potential as well as the possible increase in amount of negatively charged bulk precipitated zinc xanthate. Lead ions activate sphalerite in a wide pH range and the lead activated mineral assumes a flotation behavior similar to that of galena (PbS). However, addition of ZnSO4 depresses the lead-activated sphalerite by replacing lead ions at the mineral/solution interface.

The role of geology in coal exploration, mine planning and mine development has, in the past, been relatively small. The primary reason for this lies in. the simplicity of geologic concepts that were necessary to bring these operations about. These concepts can be briefly stated as follows: 1) coal occurs in the beds or layers and is overlain and underlain by shales, sandstone or limestone in varying porportions, 2) each coal bed has been given a name and certain quality characteristics can often be associated with a named bed and 3) coal beds (and their adjoining rocks) are often folded into broad anticlines or synclines and, in some places, displaced or faulted. In actual practice, however, these simple principles have been found wanting. Thickening, thinning, pinch outs or changes in coal quality occurred but the occurrence was apparently unpredictable and the only real solution to such problems seemed to be practice and experience. This combined with ingeneous engineering solutions have provided answers to most questions. Perhaps a more fundamental reason that geology could offer so little input to coal mining is that the thickest, most persistant and best quality coal seams followed the above stated rules fairly well. In many areas, however, such seams are now nearing exhaustion and the increased demand for clean, non-polluting, safe energy is quickly bringing a need for techniques of exploration and mining procedures that will make development of formerly unminable seams a profitable venture. For the past 20 years some considerable body of knowledge has been added to the framework of the geology of sedimentary rocks and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of these newer ideas that will be useful in solving some of the present problems of coal exploration and development.

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents.

Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

For the commercial production of iron ore pellets from hematite ores, as it is practiced in various pellet plants, the addition of lime has shown to be an efficient means with a view to improving cold compression and abrasive strength of the indurated pellets considerably. Unfortunately, it has also been shown at the same time, that the metallurgical properties as, for instance, swelling behavior, softening during reduction under load and disintegration of the grain, can be adversely affected to a high degree. In the course of smelting tests carried out by renowned steelworks, blast furnace operation was heavily disturbed by the swelling and early softening of the pellets, also by their disintegration in the low-temperature range, which altogether led to a considerable lowering of the smelting rate (1, 2, 3).

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

Anenopyrite, both pure and in some cases associated with pyrite, was laboratory roasted either isothermally or at a constant heating rate, at temperatures mainly between 723 and 923 K and under environments of air, sulfur dioxide, oxygen and argon, as well as S02/02/H20/N2 mixtures. The mineralogy, arsenic contents and in some cases surface areas of the calcines were evaluated so as to provide an enhanced understanding particularly of the conditions under which the important transformations to pyrrhotite and magnetite occur. A thermodynamic analysis is also undertaken to rationalize the observations and provide some guidance for the operation of commercial roasters.

Introduction Screening is defined as a mechanical process which separates particles on the basis of their size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. The key element in this method of particle sizing is obviously the screening surface, the medium that contains the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. This surface must be strong enough to support the weight of the material being screened, flexible enough to yield to the vibrating force applied to it, yet light enough to provide a reasonable ratio of open area to attain a practical through- put. Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. The iron-ore beneficiation and shiploading facilities of the Marcona Mining Company are at San Nicolas Bay which is on the Peruvian coastal desert about two hundred and seventy miles south of Lima. The mines are at elevation of 2,500 ft. Crude ore is transported from the Mine primary crushers to the beneficiation plants by ten miles of overland belt conveyors. After the predominantly magnetic ore is reduced to minus 3/4 in. in the secondary crushing plant, the ore is ground by rod and ball mills and concentrated with magnetic separators. The concentrate slurry is pumped to a thickening and filtering installation for desliming and dewatering. Pelletizing is accomplished with a Lurgi and also a Dravo-Lurgi machine. Deep-water shiploading facilities are available close to the beneficiation plants. Figure 1 shows a flowsheet of the general operation. Pelletizing operations are scheduled 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. A maximum tonnage rate with a high percentage of operating time is necessary to produce the three and one half million tons per year required from the two pellet lines. Process control is a major responsibility and of primary concern to all Operating personnel. The particle size, moisture, and chemical composition of the filter cake must be closely controlled to get uniform high-grade pellets. Key points are sampled routinely and analyzed on a two-hour basis to provide the necessary structure and chemical data to maintain a superior final product. The iron content of the pellets is held between 65.3 and 65.8 percent with 4.0 percent Si02. Sulfur is below 0.04 percent and copper is below 0.02 percent in the finished pellet.

Commercial computer "time-sharing" is a new and powerful tool for the engineer. It is a system of virtually simultaneous use of a digital computer by several individuals. Access to the computer is by means of a conventional teletypewriter which transmits over the regular telephone lines to the computer which may be located any distance from the user. Complex or repetitive computations can be programmed and the speed of computation is many times that which one can do with slide rule and desk calculator. The availability of such a commercial computer "time-sharing" system offered an opportunity to transform a tedious and time-consuming task into one that requires only a few minutes. Until the work of F. C. Bond produced widely accepted mathematical statements concerning the performance of grinding mills, the selection of the proper size equipment was done by comparison with similar operating equipment. Allis-Chalmers systematized Bond's work in a bulletin published in 1963 but the calculations are laborious and the final mill selection still required comparison of the calculated power draw with the power requirements listed in equipment catalogs. This was, however, a step forward from previous procedures. This paper discusses a rapid and simple method of determining the size and power requirement of overflow ball mills. A shared-time computer program has been developed which rapidly calculates and displays the physical dimensions, power requirements, grinding media size and quantity, as well as the important correction factors used. All of these data are calculated from input information which is usually available.
