Introduction The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries. But there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the Newcastle area. This is nearly 50 years after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-60s is primarily due to the expansion of the export market in Japan, Asia, and Europe. Australian coals Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins of Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in the Sydney, Bowen, Oakland, and Gailiee Basins. Apart from the Collie Basin in western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory, and the Tasmania Basin are basically unexploited. The Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia. Currently exploited or potentially commercial deposits of black coal in Australia occur in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. Estimated black coal reserves are summarized in Table 1. Coals from different ages have significant differences in their petrographic characteristics. Many of the Permian coals are usually rich in inertinite. Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically rich in vitrinite content. Typical petrographic and chemical characteristics of some important Australian coking coals are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The reserves of coking coals are restricted in the main to the Permian coals of the Sydney and Bowen Basins. Coal deposits in the latter are at shallow depth. A high percentage of these are being strip-mined. On the other hand, in the Sydney Basin, the majority of the reserves of good quality coking coals are at significant depth. The mining cost of these deposits is substantially higher than those in the Bowen Basin. It is usually possible to make strong coke with Australian Permian coals of vitrinite content much lower than the other international coals. But there are many major Permian deposits in Australia where low vitrinite content presents problems. As they are classified as marginal coking coals, optimization of their pro¬cessing plays an important role in meeting the market specifications of coking coal. The major reason for processing Australian coal is to reduce the ash content. Compared with British and some American coals, Australian coals are of relatively high ash content. Unlike American coals, more than 99% of the Australian coal deposits have sulfur content less than 1%. Consequently, sulfur control has never been a major problem. "INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

The INRED process has been developed step by step by Boliden since 1972 at MEFOS, the Foundation for Metallurgical Research, at Lulea in Sweden. The demonstration - plant is number five in this series. The purpose of this plant, which has a nominal capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year of hot metal is to: 1) prove the process on a sufficiently large scale to provide the basis for construction of production plants, 2) test various kinds of raw materials on behalf of licensees, 3) train operators of the first production plant, 4) develop the process further for special applications.

Edwards Deming's definition of management. Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.

After 30 years of successfully mining gold, Newmont Gold has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East Underground at the rate of 864 t/d (950 stpd). Annual production is more than 3.1 t (100,000 02). More than 70 underground miners will be employed during Carlin East's estimated six-year mine life. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed, cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

The percentage of exploration dollars flowing out of the industrialized countries continues at an all-time high, and this shift in risk money is justified (Samuels, 1990; Bosson, 1977). Clearly, the odds of discovery are greatly enhanced if exploration is pursued in an untrampled and geologically more prospective environment. Unfortunately, such major unexplored areas of the developed world are shrinking rapidly, not just because the lands have already been tested, but primarily because they have been withdrawn from exploration. Experience, however, has shown that foreign investment is not without risks. These include problems that result from working in isolated areas, a lack of infrastructure, untrained workers and an absence of a solid geological data base. While the likelihood of once-feared expropriation is now low, mining enterprises still must take precautions to gain the support of their constituencies, including a variety of governments (local, provincial and central), workers, environmentalists, cultural organizations and local landowners. Is foreign exploration worth the risk? In most cases, Yes! But maintaining tenure and long-term success in a less developed country is only likely with good planning and the use of appropriate safeguards. These include measures such as buying country-risk insurance, building multinational relationships, forming joint investments, developing a broad customer base and seeking local investors in the company (Cobbe, 1979). The primary theme of this lecture is: How a company handles its constituency is critical to long-term tenure in a foreign country. Ideally, a multinational mining company would be so effective in dealing with the local people and managing its relationship with the host government that it would become a preferred employer, preferred over its competitors and over local companies. Historical overview Our earliest ancestors lived in Africa three to four million years ago. The Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, about 500,000 years ago, marked the beginning of mining in its earliest form (Gregory, 1980; Wolf, 1984). Various types of rocks and stones were used for tools and weapons, with flint being the preferred resource for implements. Initially, these materials were collected as stones (eoliths) lying on the surface. Then they came from excavations of flint in limestone beds that were exposed in river banks or naturally occurring excavations. Later, more formal mining developed. No doubt tribes of the Old Stone Age experienced conflict over rights to eoliths, food and land. The question of who owns the land and has rights to its contents and what is fair value for extraction is still the subject of intense debate and, occasionally, open conflict. As time passed, the search for useful minerals required migration from one area to another. Later, voyages from Europe to the New World and travels to other remote regions were funded and supported by absentee investors, kings and such (Rogers, 1976). The primary objective of such funding was to obtain gold, silver, food stuffs and other commodities that could be collected from the new countries. This is still the objective of foreign investment.

An accurate, efficient and stable computation of the mill matrix function (eAt) is needed where mill matrix (A) is a real general matrix. Two important modeling cases in comminution where such need arises are: Heterogeneous comminution behavior of multi-component ores and ultra-fine grinding involving simultaneous attrition and fragmentation breakages. This paper presents the application of a novel splitting method in conjunction With similarity transformation technique in the form of "product formula" which is found to work in all cases and uses a most aggravating, yet interesting property of the matrix exponential in a restricted sense. Results are presented showing that this method can yield solution as accurate as those obtained With an analytical technique. The utility of this computational approach is demonstrated by parameter estimation analysis using a distributed component model in the liberation area through computer simulations.

Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. Economic open-pit and surface mining often call for ever increasing volumes of lower grade materials. So it is important, often critical, to develop precise expense and production estimates for the large electric mining shovels now in use. An electric shovel's basic application is to "shovel up" material, starting at ground level with the dipper moving up into a working face or bank. It's impractical to dig below ground level with a shovel, except briefly or in unusual circumstances. The shovel working face is "the bank," whether the material is dug from natural bed or blasted. The shovel's digging attachment, the boom and dipper handle, is built in standard and long range configurations. A standard digging attachment is normally used for loading into haulage equipment. The long range attachment is normally used for side or hack casting to a spoil pile. It is also used fir loading into haulage equipment placed above shovel ground level, as in some coal loading applications. Shovel clipper size and hauler capacity should he matched so that a hauler can he loaded in three to four shovel work cycles. Five cycles is usually the limit of good practice. If fewer than three cycles are required, the hauler is too small. More than five cycles indicates possible excess harder waiting time for loading, or shovel waiting time for too few haulers. Full dipper loads, including the last dipper or ''pass, " are essential for economical shovel and hauler match. Consistent need for a final partly full dipper to fill the hauler shows an improper match between the two.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. INTRODUCTION Truck haulage of muck in underground mining operations has been in use around the world for many years. From the late 1.950s into the early 1970s, haulage by means of load-haul-dump (LHD) units challenged haulage by means of trucks, and, to a large degree, LHD units dominated the trackless concept of moving mate¬rial underground. However, beginning in 1975, the emphasis began to shift back to the use of trucks, with LHD units assuming the secondary role of loading the trucks. Over the years, several manufacturers have been offering trucks with capacities ranging from 4.5 to 45.4 t (5 to 50 st) and with features that specifically address the constraints of underground operation. TRUCK TYPES Three different types of trucks are available for use underground, namely the tip dumpers, telescoping dumpers, and push-plate dumpers. The following para¬graphs describe each of these three types. Tip Dumpers Tip dumpers are designed to lift the truck box, using gravity to dump the load out the rear of the box. The primary application of these trucks is in the haulage of muck to the surface. However, these trucks also may be utilized underground, if a chamber is provided to accommodate the raised truck box at the dumping point. Fig. 1 illustrates a four-wheel drive truck with a 10.0-t (11-st) capacity; this truck is only 1.9 m (6.25 ft) wide and is designed specifically to follow narrow and winding vein courses. Fig. 2 illustrates a two-wheel drive tip dumper with a 24.5-t (27-st) capacity; this truck operates on 12% grades with firm dry surfaces and in modes both loaded-up and loaded¬down. Telescoping Dumpers Telescoping dumpers specifically address the constraints imposed by low back heights, and they represent an optimization of compressed envelope size with maximum payload capacity. Figs. 3 and 4 illus¬trate a typical telescoping dumper with a capacity of 18.1 t (20 st). Fig. 3 shows the box in position for carrying the load, and Fig. 4 shows the same truck with the box in the full-dumping position. Fig. 5 illustrates the loading and dumping cycles. Fig. 6 illustrates an approximation of how an LHD unit with an eject-o-dump (EOD) bucket would be used to load over the rear of this type of truck. Fig. 6 shows a low-profile telescoping truck in the first stage of loading, with a 6.8-t (7.5-st) LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket. A loader with a smaller capacity and a narrower bucket would allow the bucket to fit inside the truck box and would achieve an even lower loading height than that illustrated. Gen erally, an LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket and teamed with a telescoping dump truck can be used with a lower back height than could any other front-end loader and truck team. Push-Plate Dumpers Push-plate dumpers are similar to telescoping Bump¬ers, except that they do not have the two-stage box. Instead, push-plate dumpers utilize a single push plate to discharge the load out the rear of the box. Gen erally, these units are limited to payload capacities of about 9 t (10 st). Fig. 7 illustrates a typical push-plate dumper.

At the first workshop on Surface Subsidence Due to Underground Mining (1 981 ) , Yarbrough delivered a paper (1 ) describing the mine subsidence insurance program in Illinois operated as the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund (IMSIF) . In this paper we will present claims data and describe changes that have occurred in the Illinois Insurance Code during the first six years the IMSIF has been in existence. The change in the original Illinois Public Act 80-1 41 3 that most affected the public was an amendment increasing the maximum amount of mine subsidence insurance avail- able on a structure from $50,000 to $100,000. Seventy-two counties in Illinois have been undermined for minerals, primarily bituminous coal. In Franklin County (.in the southern part of the state) 36 percent of the land area has been undermined for coal extraction. In St. Clair and Madison Counties , two counties that include the St. Louis Metropolitan area along the western border of the state, 10 percent and 7 percent of the land surface have been undermined. Most of the undermined area in the two counties is beneath urbanized land. In 34 counties, approximately 1 percent or more of the land surface has been undermined (2). The first shaft mine in Illinois was sunk in the city of Belleville (east of St. Louis) in 1842, and the mines of early vintage have initiated the majority of the mine subsidence claims. Data compiled from the first six years reveals that most Illinois mine subsidence events that affect structures occur over abandoned mines where early methods of high- extraction mining practices were used. Maps of these mines operated in the 1800s reveal irregular development of room and pillar areas and poorly defined production areas (panels). Rooms in the mines varied from 15 to 40 feet in width and the pillars varied in width from 5 to 40 feet. The pillars were often long and narrow. Recovery rates in mines that operated prior to 1900 generally averaged 50 per- cent, and extraction rates as high as 80 percent have been documented (2). Some pillar robbing occurred.

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

Buttressing is a widely employed control measure for mitigating slope failure in various settings such as openpit mines, road sections, dams, and hilly or rocky terrains. This paper presents a study on the effects of buttressing, specifically concerning slide-head toppling failure. Drawing insights from a case study of slide-head toppling in Zambia, our investigation employs both analytical (limit equilibrium) and numerical (3DEC software) modeling techniques. The analytical and numerical models exhibit notable similarities in their schematics and overall results, revealing a subtle effect of buttressing in controlling slide-head toppling failure. This study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced role of buttressing in slope stability, with implications for optimizing buttress design parameters. While the overall findings suggest a modest influence of buttressing on slide-head toppling failure, further discussions delve into the specific implications and potential refinements for practical applications.

Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. And the potential for an upward shift in prices for a given commodity is very positive. The decision to invest in a prom-

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.
