The paper industry is an $80 billion/year business that is the largest consumer of industrial minerals. Paper industry generally refers to paper and paperboard products, including pulp mills. Grades and uses of paper and paperboard are very diverse, including such things as napkins, paper plates, corrugated boxes, magazines, newsprint, currency, and copier paper. Only about 40% of paper utilizes industrial minerals as fillers or coating materials. Minerals are used for both functional and economic reasons. Most often, minerals such as kaolin clay and calcium carbonate are used to improve print quality, brightness and opacity of paper. The minerals can be added as fillers into the paper in the wet end of the papermaking system, or can be applied as part of a coating to the paper. Coated papers are the highest quality paper, being used for magazines, advertising brochures and annual reports. Common uses for filled uncoated paper are books, copier paper, envelopes and many of the Sunday newspaper advertising inserts.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). The environmental and economic problem created by pyrite in coal are well documented. The removal of pyritic sulfur prior to, or during, utilization has been the object of considerable research, however, much of this research has proceeded without a proper knowledge of the microscopic occurrences of pyrite in coal. This paper investigates the forms, occurrences, and variations in the distribution of pyrite in major West Virginia coal scan. Twenty-nine samples from twenty-two major west Virginia coal scans were selected for this study (see Table I). The samples were selected so as to be representative of the major coal producing areas of the state. All samples, except five, were collected at active surface mines, as indicated in Table I, and all except one were channel samples. The time interval between sampling and preparation of polished microblocks varied from two months to two years, though most were prepared within three months of collection. Grinding, screen¬ing, and riffling of samples to obtain 250 grams of -20 mesh coal for microscopic analysis strictly followed ASTM procedure D2013-72.

"Iron ore in Minnesota probably carries a heavier tax burden than any mineral in any other place in the world. The State Tax Commission, created in 1907, originated the system, and with the assistance of the School of Mines is constantly making such adjustments, changes and increases as appear necessary, in order to place mineral reserves on the assessment rolls at their true and full present taxable value. The ore bodies on the Mesabi are so well defined by drilling and underground devel¬opment that it is possible to estimate very exactly the volume on every forty acres of land taken as a unit. This is done by the operating or holding company and reported annually to the Tax Commission, Who check the estimates, having all data, and- proceed to fix the valuation for taxation purposes.The first step is to ascertain a general average selling price in open market, over a period of years ; then the total cost per ton (exclusive of royalty) to produce and market the ore. The difference between the average selling price and producing cost per ton is taken as the future full value per ton. This is then discounted at a rate of interest that represents the present and possible future worth of money, over a period of years that will be required to exhaust the ore body, giving the present full value per ton., Iron ore is taxed at 50 per cent of its full value, while other property is taxed at 33 1/3 per cent and 25 per cent."

Mountain tunnels are generally considered to be stable during earthquakes, however, it is known that the portal areas are prone to seismic damages. Characteristics in portals such as the location of the slope, modulus of ground deformation, and the change of overburden are different for each tunnel, and damage degrees are unclear. In this study, we reproduced the seismic behavior to investigate the effect on the tunnel portal by considering some parameters above, using simple static model tests and numerical analysis. As a result, the conditions of the slope condition and minimum distance from slope was confirmed to influence on the mechanical behavior of the tunnel portal during earthquakes.

Pneumatic, triboelectrostatic processing of physical mixtures containing fine (-200 mesh) particulate may have significant application potential in the mining and energy industries. Such dry processing methods, especially for finely comminuted materials, have not been examined in as much detail as wet processing methods nor have been part of the training or education of mining and process engineers. We have examined fundamental and applied physical and engineering factors controlling triboelectrostatic beneficiation of fine-sized physical mixtures, one of which -combustion fly ash -has size, heterogeneity and mineral concentrations typical of those expected in mined minerals. The applicability of dry processing, however, cannot be readily evaluated because of the unavailability of standard procedures for process assessment.

Low flotation recovery and selectivity have been long-standing problems in the treatment of most ultra-fine phosphate ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of two ultra-fine Brazilian phosphate ores from Itafos’ Arraias project. These ores are predominantly composed of quartz, muscovite, apatite and a Ca-Al phosphate. As a result of fine phosphate dissemination and associated grinding requirements, column flotation was selected for the metallurgical test program to address the inherent limitations of fine particle flotation using conventional flotation cells. Accordingly, both benchtop Denver cell and laboratory column flotation tests were conducted to optimize their respective flotation responses. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical flotation. In column flotation, a P2O5 concentrate grade of 30.5-31.0% was yielded at a flotation recovery of 83.7-85.1% for the 38x0µm generated ultrafines. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include a higher degree of selectivity, increased recovery, and reduced collector dosage as compared to bench-scale mechanical flotation.

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

Due to the time consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, it is required, due to practical limitations, to develop a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer & Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed, to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air contents, and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency, and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique which can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth pump performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute Standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI/HI 9.6.7-2010).

"Geologic structure and properties are the primary influences on ground control at San Juan Mine. Geotechnical properties of the coal seam and near seam strata, the presence of above seam sandstone paleochannels and water, are thought to be the leading contributors to ground control issues. It is the confluence of specific geologic conditions rather than isolated features that most often produce adverse conditions. Altering primary support installation and mining practices are done when unfavorable conditions appear during development. Installation of standing support is most often employed when adverse conditions develop at later dates. REGIONAL GEOLOGIC SETTING San Juan Mine is an underground coal mine located on the western flank of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. The San Juan Basin is contained within the south eastern region of the Colorado Plateau geographic province. The basin contains multiple coal bearing formations and is also a major producer of coalbed methane gas. San Juan Mine is stratigraphically located within the Fruitland Formation. From a prominent monocline marking the western boundary of the basin, the formation dips gently to the east towards the center of the basin. The primary driver for the deposition of coal bearing formations within the basin was the Cretaceous Inland Seaway. Multiple cycles of transgression and regression driven by sea level rise and tectonic subsidence deposited rock types from marine shale’s to terrestrial sandstones. The Sevier Mountains to the west of the seaway likely provided the sediment supply for the Fruitland Formation. During a major cycle of seaward regression, the Pictured Cliffs Sandstone Formation prograded over the marine Lewis Shale. The coal bearing Fruitland Formation followed, being deposited over the Pictured Cliffs. The Fruitland Formation contains numerous coal seams and is approximately 400 ft. thick at San Juan Mine. Fruitland Formation coal seams are numbered in order of superposition. San Juan mines the Fruitland number 8 seam. Dating has placed the age of the seam at approximately 73 to 75 million years [1]. LOCAL GEOLOGIC SETTING The Fruitland 8 coal seam dips approximately 1-3 degrees towards the E-NE. At San Juan Mine, the seam displays a mild plunging, synclinal structure, the axis roughly bisecting the mine from west to east. The number 8 seam consists of five coal benches and four volcanic ash band partings labeled sequentially based on superposition. The lowest portion of the seam is the 8-1 bench, the 8-2 through 8-5 benches following sequentially to the top of the minable seam. Ash band partings are labelled P1 through P4 from bottom to top respectively. The presence of distinctive partings and benches allows for seam definition and aids in identifying mining horizons."

Under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the accompanying House Conference Report, the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines are charged with the responsibility of making recurring mineral studies of wilderness and wilderness candidate areas in national forests within and proposed for the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wilderness Act, a major shift from the multiple-use concept of national forests, identified for the first time the value of mineral resource information in decisions for single-use designation of public lands. This concept was further realized when the Secretary of the Interior in May 1974 recommended that mineral studies be made prior to wilderness recommendations for five large Interior-managed game ranges and the Glacier Bay National Monument aggregating 7.8 million acres. Presently, our studies have been completed on 126 wilderness and proposed wilderness areas totaling 15.4 million acres in the national forests. In 1973, 1 year in advance of the act's 10-year review deadline, we completed the 34 primitive areas, originally the only potential additions considered by the 1964 Act.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1,500 )fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high-velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced, allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to 1,600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Introduction Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name Split Sets, are presently under research and development by Ingersoll-Rand Company and Dr. James J. Scott, inventor. Conceived in 1953, the system is a patented process undergoing extensive field and laboratory testing. The author has published papers on the Split Set System earlier (References 4, 5, 6) The Split Set System holds promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The system produces an interior reinforcement to a rock mass which: 1. Is simple in its concept. 2. Adjusts to the degree of restraint needed to match rock properties. 3. Provides a yieldable support and, later, a more rigid support as it is needed. 4. Pre-loads the rock in compression to increase stability. 5. Is a full-contact, fully tensioned device to resist rock loads. 6. Minimizes the stress concentration effects inherent in many interior support devices. 7. Improves safety for the miner. 8. Is cheaper than a grouted system. 9. Offers the rock mechanics engineer an opportunity to design in a fashion not before possible.

This paper describes the leaching of gold with Geobrom® 3400 from a very rich (6.2 kg/tonne) black sand concentrate and its subsequent recovery by ion exchange resins and solvent extraction. The dissolution of gold from black sand ranged from 94 to 96%. Gold loadings and recoveries of nearly 100% were achieved by both ion exchange and solvent extraction methods. The kinetics and equilibrium of loading gold onto ion exchange resins and its elution from the resin were studied. The commercial ion exchange resins PAZ®- 4, DOVEX®- 21K, and Amberlite® XAD- 7, and Great Lakes Chemical experimental GLR-30 were evaluated in this work. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether was used in all the solvent extraction work for gold recovery from Geobrom leach solution. The consumption of Geobrom was about 130 kg per tonne of the concentrate processed. Therefore, the cost of lixiviant to extract 3.11 x l0-2 kg of gold from the black sand was only about $1.00. Based on the electrochemical regeneration of bromine, the economics of bromine process vs. cyanidation were investigated.

During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.
