The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties, agreeing to a decision and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. At that time, a law was passed, requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading financial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation.

Limestone and dolomite are the most common rock types mined and quarried as industrial minerals in the United States. In 1993 over 720 million tons of limestone and dolomite valued at over 3.1 billion dollars were extracted and consumed throughout the nation. While the greatest volume of this vast production is used as aggregate for construction purposes, few people realize how critical limestone and dolomite are to our food chain and our national goals of clean air and water. Limestone, including dolomite, can truly be called nature's gift to the environment. Without a reliable, economical source of limestone the quality of our environment would be severely comprised and the standard of living of our citizens dramatically reduced.

Self-supporting, open stoping underground mining methods are some of the earliest, starting with the prehistoric flint mines of Europe and the Egyptian gold mines of Nubia in the time of the pharaohs. When the early miner created an opening, it had to be inherently stable and self-supporting to enable him to continue. Therefore, as mining progressed beyond simple gophering, self-supported open stoping methods were devised to meet the needs of individual ore bodies. Timber for support appears in mines as early as 1000 BC, but this was for no more than local ground control. The ingenuity of mining engineers through history has so refined open stoping methods that today they produce more tonnage than any other mining system. Self-supported open stoping finds its application in moderate to strong rocks that exhibit little jointing or fiagmentation. Good back, hanging wall, and footwall conditions that require no more than incidental support are an essential part of these mining methods. Open stoping methods find applications in all inclinations of ore body from flat to vertical, and where ore movement may be either mechanical or under the influence of gravity. Table 18.0.1 demonstrates the range of ore bodies suitable for open stoping, with particular reference to their dip and the deposit thickness. Most of the flat-dipping applications use ore pillars for overall support and ground control that may be recovered under some conditions after completion of normal stoping practices. In steeper ore bodies, rib, crown, and sill pillars used to block out the ore may be recovered subsequent to the completion of stoping. Open stopes are frequently filled to facilitate pillar recovery. Two of the methods, vertical crater retreat (VCR) and shrinkage stoping, utilize fragmented ore for temporary support in the stopes. In these two cases, the stope is not strictly open until after drawdown.

The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

Many minerals float best with fatty acids in the intermediate pH range. For example, fluorite, a semi soluble salt mineral, exhibits a maximum contact angle and a maximum flotation recovery in the pH range of 6-8 after conditioning in a palmitate solution (fig. 1). The maximum in flotation coincides roughly, as many researchers have observed, with the boundary of bulk precipitation of the fatty acid. According to fig. Z this boundary is in the above case of 5xl0-7 M palmitate approximately at pH 6.3. For assessing the phenomena occurring at the bulk precipitation boundary of fatty acids, the surface tensions of carboxylate solutions have been measured under various conditions. Fig. 3 shows the surface tension development of palmitate and myristate solutions of increasing concentration at pH 12. Also shown are the bulk precipitation edges (BPE) of the respective solid species that is stable under these conditions, that is the potassium acid soap, HKAZ. Both curves display a similar behavior. As the concentration of carboxylat,e increases, the surface tension decreases, until a minimum is reached at which the curves level off. The decrease of surface tension with increasing carboxylate concentration is generally taken to indicate the surface excess of the carboxylate ion. The point where the curve suddenly levels off has not yet been explained. While it is well known that the onset of micellization (CMC) may cause such an inflexion of the surface tension curve, this cannot be the case here because the position of this point depends, as shown in fig. 4 for palmitate, on pH (the CMC is generally independent of pH). We believe that this point indicates the precipitation of a colloidal acid soap (colloidal precipitation edge, CPE) before the bulk precipitation of this species sets in (BPE).

The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

Numerous researchers worldwide have investigated the prediction of ground movements due to underground coal mining utilizing different analytical, empirical, and numerical models. These studies have primarily focused on the development of prediction methodologies for either flat or gently dipping seams under variable topography, and only a few studies are available that have investigated the prediction of ground movements over inclined seams. Although most inclined coal seams are in China, India, and other countries worldwide, a few inclined coal seams (with a dip of 10 degrees or greater) are also present in the US. Currently, the prediction of ground movements for inclined coal seams using empirical methods utilizes the same methodology for horizontal seams. It consists of dividing the inclined seam into horizontal segments, calculating deformations due to each segment, and superimposing the calculation results. This paper presents a new tool that provides a methodology for modeling subsidence under inclined seam conditions. Examples based on subsidence measurements available in the literature are presented. The goal is to implement this methodology into the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS).

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.

Conductive metal powders are important building blocks for today's micro-electronic circuitry. Formulated into inks, they provide the interconnects needed to complete a complex integrated circuit and the means to enter the world of miniaturization. Traditionally, the inks have been based upon expensive metals such as silver, palladium, platinum and gold because of their excellent electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The use of a copper based ink, as an alternative to precious metal inks, recently has received considerable attention. Instability in the prices and limited supply of certain precious metal systems have driven up production costs, making the development of a lower cost copper system more attractive to manufacturers. However, lower production costs are on1 y real ized if performance and reliability can be maintained. While the development has been driven by cost, copper does offer some significant performance advantages over noble metal systems: conductivity as good as silver and 4W better than gold; leach resistance better than silver and equal to gold; stability at high frequencies better than gold or silver; strong film bonding characteristics; and compatibility with most solders. These benefits, however, do not come without cost. The inherently reactive nature of pure copper, while providing unique performance properties, makes it difficult to process. Unl i ke precious metals which can be fired in air, copper would oxidize and so requires special furnaces and atmospheres. Despite these difficulties, the transition from precious metal thick film systems to copper is gaining momentum. Manufacturers of high density, high performance circuitry are exploring the performance advantages of copper over gold and silver and the manufacturers of consumer products are considering the potential cost savings of copper over silver-palladium. Sherritt has developed a fine copper powder for this industry. Through association with the ink manufacturers, it has been found that performance properties of the ink vary with the physical and chemical characteristics of the powder. Production Process The production of very fine copper powders at Sherritt is based upon the disproportionation of cuprous ions as outlined in Equation [1] (1).

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. GEORGE WEINMAN: Our first group leader for the discussion, "Ups and Downs of Downsizing," wishes to remain anonymous. ANONYMOUS PRESENTER: When George and Jamie asked me to do this, I thought a while about what to say and went through several variations of what I’ll present today. I came up with the title "Ups and Downs of Downsizing." A lot of downsizing has occurred in all of our industries-mining in particular. While this downsizing has gone on there's no doubt that all of us produced more and more, probably with less and less people and less and less resources. But I contend that there's also a big downside associated with this. I disagree with a point made in the keynote presentation yesterday, the point being that vendors are bringing new technology to us. I can agree that the major changes associated with equipment and similar items are being brought to us by vendors. But I do contend that there's an awful lot that's getting away from us-especially if you factor in the integrated supply or the strategic alliance or the various and sundry related purchasing techniques. I contend that we are missing a lot of, let's call it, lesser technology; not major equipment changes, but different tools, different techniques for doing things, different left-handed widgets. The integrated suppliers, to some degree, are bringing this to us; but I am concerned about the small guy who comes up with a good idea but deals through integrated suppliers rather than having direct contact with plant people. They're probably going to go somewhere else and market their wares. That's what I'm hearing from a lot of smaller vendors. I also think that we are losing a lot of our knowledge base. Every time you shrink an organization somebody leaves. The bottom line: less people. When a person leaves-and I don't care who he or she is, be it the janitor who's cleaning the bathroom, the operator, the engineer-when that person leaves there's some knowledge that goes with that per- son. And sometimes that knowledge is quite valuable. I've worked more or less at the plant "low." I can't tell you how many excellent, viable projects have come from people who said, "Look here. There's a better way of doing this." And, you know, they were right. Now, maybe they didn't have the resources or the expertise to develop these ideas into full projects, but they had that basic idea. Someone may say, "Well, if we put a no. 6 skyhook here, so we can lift this particular pump without bringing a crane from 30 miles away ...." No. 6 skyhooks are a bit expensive, but what if we put together a little structural steel here or whatnot?

A physical elastic seismic model, based on the Peoria oil field was constructed and used to produce multi mode cross-borehole seismic data. Because this was a physical model, it was necessary to deal with a complex wave field consisting of compressional waves, shear waves, and converted waves. The recorded raw data were complex, have no resemblance to the inter-well geology, and were difficult or impossible to interpret. These unintelligible data sets were extensively computer processed. Detailed, accurate, images of the inter-well structure, and reflecting horizons were obtained as a result of this processing. This investigation demonstrates that excellent, accurate images of the inter-well geology can be obtained by skilled seismic cross-well data acquisition and extensive careful computer processing.

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. The physical properties of clay-water systems depend on the complicated system of forces between the clay particles themselves, and between the clay particles and the ions in the liquid phase. The kind and distribution of ions in, on, and between the clay particles and the size and the shape of the particles are the basic factors determining the macroscopic behavior of clay-water systems. Understanding the system requires a knowledge of the nature of the clay particles, their size, structure, composition, and surface properties, and of the manner in which they interact with ions [and molecules] in the surrounding liquid [or other medium]. The validity of Professor Brindley's words (Brindley, 1958), written three decades ago in the context of making pottery, whitewares, and electrical porcelains, transcends time, and the basic message is perhaps all the more important in the considerably expanded use of ceramics for structural, thermal, tribological, electronic, and other applications. Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sialons have been studied in the last two decades for high- temperature structural and tribological applications, particularly for using in internal combustion engines. Titanates, zirconates and niobates of barium, strontium and lead, have high dielectric constants, and are extensively used in the formulations for making capacitors. Hexagonal ferrites (molecular formula MO.6Fe2O3) are in use for making permanent magnets for fabricating miniature motors, and for assembling loud speakers, particle accelerators etc. Cubic ferrites such as magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zinc ferrite are used as transformer cores, and for other high-frequency applications. In this context, Richerson's recent book (Richerson, 1984) on the general scope of traditional and technical ceramics is a good starting point for an overview of contemporary ceramics technology. Glasses are a whole class of amorphous materials used widely as sintering aids, and for making glass-bonded ceramics and glass-ceramic composites. Composites are yet another burgeoning field where two or more particulate components are used for improving the performance of ceramics. For all these applications, the inorganic starting materials are almost always submicron and near-micron powders. Understanding the powders' physicochemical properties, and their surface chemical interactions with the surrounding liquid/gaseous medium is-necessary for making reliable ceramic parts at competitive prices. Even though ceramics science and engineering has attained its separate identity in universities and the industry, ceramists themselves would concede that ceramics science is a cross-disciplinary field, having incorporated and assimilated within itself many principles from several apparently disjointed disciplines. Principles of material science, graduate-level physics and chemistry, polymer science, surface and colloid chemistry, transport phenomena, particle technology, unit operations commonly used in chemical engineering and mineral processing, and statistics and applied mathematics are integral part of any ceramics curriculum in universities. Added to this is the fact that all bench-scale successes in making ceramic parts are to be scaled-up for larger throughput operations. Understanding and applying process engineering principles of comminution, classification, drying, calcination, etc. then becomes essential. CERAMIC FORMING: Despite the diversity of the materials and processes, conceptually, the steps involved in making ceramic parts have remained the same over several decades: The different components for making the pan (usually one or more powders plus other forming and sintering additives) are proportioned and mixed thoroughly, and the well-mixed formulations are consolidated into desirable shapes known as "green bodies." Usually binders such as wax, clay, organic polymers and surfactants, whether dispersed or dissolved in a suitable liquid are used during mixing the batch for giving strength for the green bodies. In the dried green state, the inorganic powders typically occupy only 55 to 60% of the bulk volume of the body, depending on the particle size distributions of the powders and the forming history, with mostly inter- particle voids accounting for the rest of the void volume. SINTERING: The formed bodies are then fired in high- temperatures kilns/furnaces during which the parts are exposed to a predetermined temperature profile, and "soaked" for a certain duration at the final high temperatures, typically between 1200 K and 1900 K, and then cooled to room temperature. The gaseous atmosphere in the furnace is controlled (oxidizing, reducing, or inert) when necessary. During the initial stages of firing, volatile liquids evaporate, and during the intermediate temperatures between 400 and 600 K, the the organic polymeric additives pyrolize and oxidize into water vapor, CO, C02, and other gases. In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? Numbers, arithmetic, mathematics. Where did it all come from? Who needs it? We all do, but many school children would not agree. Engineers, physicists, accountants, tax collectors, and most of the general public are well aware that modern society in large part is founded on mathematics and could not exist without it. Mathematics developed over thousands of years as part of the everyday life of man. No one area, tribe, or race can claim discovery. In fact, from the records that do exist, it is evident that many facets of mathematics were discovered independently of others who made similar discoveries. While proof may be lacking, the earliest concepts of mathematics may be some 250,000 to 300,000 years old. The first use of numbers as written records is unknown. However, a bone of a young wolf deeply cut with 55 notches-arranged in two rows, one of 25 notches, the other of 30-was found in Czechoslovakia. Dated to be about 30,000 years old, it is perhaps an early record of some kind of counting system. It is assumed that mathematics was developed as an answer to man's practical needs, but anthropological studies suggest that the art of counting may have developed in connection with the needs of primitive religious ceremonial rites. Fingers probably were first used to designate sets of from one to five objects. Using both hands, up to 10 items could be indicated. As civilization developed, so did the need for more flexible systems to record items of trade, measure land, and figure taxes. Aristotle noted that the development of the decimal system comes from the fact that most people are born with 10 fingers and 10 toes. In spite of this obvious fact many early civilizations used binary, ternary, and quinary systems while vigesimal systems (with 20 as a base) and even sexagesimal systems (with 60 as a base) were used by others. A form of writing was in use in both the Mesopotamian and Nile valleys as early as 3000 to 4500 B.C. In Mesopotamia, wedge-shaped marks were impressed upon soft clay tablets that were hardened in ovens or by the sun. Many thousands of such tablets have survived. When the tablets were finally deciphered, some were found to be records of items shipped in trade, inventories, tax accounts, and mathematics exercises for teaching. Mesopotamia is also the source of an interesting board game dating back to about 2500 B.C. Its buttonlike men and triangular dice were apparently used with squares of shell, inlaid with lapis lazuli and red sandstone. Unfortunately, rules of play were not found. In Egypt, record preservation was somewhat better. Discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 eventually led to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics that included a numbering system at least 5,000 years old. These records show a competence in counting and numbering. A calendar of good accuracy may have been in existence as early as 4,200 years ago. INTRODUCTION Today, auxiliary fans, or boosters as they are sometimes called, are commonly used underground to provide ventilation for safe working conditions for personnel. Fans are installed in many ways and for many purposes; however, their use falls into three main categories depending upon the application. Auxiliary Face Ventilation For Coal Mines Usually the application of auxiliary fans underground in coal mines presents problems not normally encountered in other types of mining. Two of the major problems deal with liberation of methane at the coal face and the production of coal dust in the mining process. For these conditions it is necessary to use permissible (explosion-proof) type of equipment. As a result, these fans are discussed in a category by themselves. Auxiliary Fans For Tunnel and Drift Ventilation Tunnels and drifts present unique ventilation requirements. For instance, tunnels and drifts can be developed for considerable distances into virgin territory. Since they are generally dead-ended, the only way to obtain ventilation at the face is to use ventilation pipe to establish one leg of a ventilation circuit. The ventilation of tunnels and drifts therefore falls into another natural category. Other Uses of Auxiliary Fans For Mining Purposes Fans can be applied to mining applications in many ways other than those discussed under the other two categories. For example, many times auxiliary fans can do a much more practical job of proper air control and distribution that can be achieved with any other mechanical means; therefore, these other uses are discussed as a special category. AUXILIARY FACE VENTILATION FOR COAL MINES After 1936, federal and state coal mining laws prohibited the use of auxiliary underground fans in coal mines since such equipment had been widely misused. In certain cases, recirculation of face air had been allowed to occur thereby creating a serious potential explosive hazard by the possible buildup of excessive methane concentrations. By the late 1950s, mining machines with rapid face penetration were commonly being used in coal seams which liberated higher quantities of methane than in earlier years. As a consequence, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of auxiliary face fans was again allowed under strict experimental conditions because conventional methods of face ventilation control without fans were becoming inadequate. Today, auxiliary face fans are widely used under strict federal and state control. Such auxiliary ventilation does not reduce the need for the amount of primary air from the main mine fans; however, it does help to distribute primary air more efficiently at the face. The present trend is toward an exhaust system of ventilation utilizing 406- to 610-mm (16- to 24-in.) diam tubing extending from the face to an outby auxiliary fan. Since the tubing is normally applied with negative pressure, spiral wire reinforced tubing has been replaced largely with metal and, more commonly, fiberglass tub¬ing. Additional auxiliary blower units are often used at the mouth of the room being developed, or installed on the miner or loader near the face, depending upon the amount of gas liberation present. Often one (or more) of the fan units is equipped with an integrally mounted hopper and feeder which automatically adds a continuously metered amount of rock dust to the exhaust air. The combination unit tends to make the mixture of discharge particles noncombustible and reduces to some extent the need for additional rock dusting of return airways. In this part of the chapter, typical auxiliary ventilation systems are described including curves and photograph of typical/applicable equipment. Reference will be made to "blowers" and "ex¬hausters." Both are fans and are basically the same units. They take on their name through the manner in which they are used. A blower usually has an inlet bell on the inlet side to help to obtain good air flow into the blades. An exhauster often has a discharge cone added to reduce the discharge loss. Any basic fan unit can be used either as a blower or an exhauster. Description of Auxiliary Ventilation Systems Several auxiliary ventilation systems and modifications of basic systems have evolved over recent years. Some of these systems are described and illustrated. System No. 1, an exhaust system for faces with comparatively low gas liberation, is shown in Fig. 1. Here

Introduction The cost of grinding may be divided into a fixed equipment cost portion and an operating cost portion. The fixed equipment cost is the amount of money required to purchase the grinding mill itself. This amount may be kept separate from the installation cost which, often, is taken as a percentage of the fixed equipment cost. A good average is 43%; therefore a $100,000 ball mill would cost approxi¬mately $143,000 installed. Operating costs are variable and paid per unit time for power, liner replacement, grinding charge replenishment, labor, and mainte¬nance including major parts replacement. Such costs depend on the geographical location and will vary with the cost of labor. Operating costs are difficult to estimate. Most mining companies consider such information proprietary. This section provides a means to obtain an estimate of the equip¬ment cost of a grinding mill with a rated accuracy of±l0%. Compara¬ble methods to determine operating costs are not available. Such costs are presented in table form with suggestions for updating them. Esti¬mating the cost of liners and steel replacement is possible as described in a later section. Capital Costs of Grinding Mills Grinding mill costs have been related,124 by means of equations and corresponding graphs, to the nominal horsepower requirements of mills. All graphs are based on a Marshall and Stevens cost index for Mining and Milling of 300, where a cost index is a ratio used to estimate current prices of equipment from obsolete prices. Where (Cost Index Now) Cost Now = (Cost Then) (Cost Index Then) (I) For example, the cost of an autogenous mill that requires a 3000¬hp motor is estimated as $500,000 (Fig. 95). This was the estimated price when the M&S (Marshall and Stevens, Mining and Milling) cost index had a value of 300. If the index is currently at 400, then the estimated current price of the autogenous mill is: Cost Now = ($500,000) (400) (300) = $667,000 Most professional journals will publish current values of cost indices at least once a month. In subsequent pages, each graph of grinding mill cost vs. mill horsepower has an associated graph of capacity vs. horsepower along with a table that relates mill size to horsepower. The associated graph and the table must be used with caution, since both apply to an average ore under average conditions. Example calculations showing how graphs should be used are shown in the following. It should be stressed that the cost data incorporated herein ex¬cludes the cost of pumps, motors, lines, and classifiers, unless other¬wise stated. Costs are not direct quotes; they are the averages of quotes supplied by manufacturers and analyzed by means of regression analysis. Example 1.
