The Beaconsfield underground gold mine is one of only a few new Australian gold projects to come into operation in the current climate of low gold prices. Up to 200,000 tonnes per annum of Tasmania Reef ore will be mined and processed over a minimum eight-year life to a depth of 900 metres below surface. The Tasmania Reef is a gold-bearing quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein occupying an old fault structure which transgresses a series of sedimentary beds. The sulphides are predominantly pyrite with lesser arsenopyrite, and also minor copper as chalcopyrite. Drilling to date below this level clearly indicates that the high-grade orebody is open at depth and that the mine life should be extended significantly over time. Since redevelopment of Beaconsfield mine began in the 1980's, extensive exploration has identified a resource of 1.5 million tonnes within a 450 vertical metre zone beneath the old workings, which extended more than 450 metres below the surface. Installation of an 800 litre per second capacity pump station 180 metres below the surface has been critical in overcoming one of the major hurdles experienced during previous operations in the early 1900's. A multi-stage development program, designed to bring the mine into full production, and incorporating construction of the on-site gold treatment plant incorporating bacterial oxidation, has now been completed. Prior to execution of a detailed engineering design of the Mintek-BacTech bacterial oxidation process, a programme of bacterial oxidation testwork was completed to provide a basis for fixing the process design criteria. 1. Introduction This is a report on applications of the earth pressure type balanced shield tunneling projects executed under narrow streets on soft alluvial layers in Japan. Japan is a long island country surrounded by the sea. Steep mountain ranges run along the archipelago and numerous rivers originate from the mountains, leaving only limited areas of flat land along the upper and middle reaches of the streams. The majority of cities in Japan are on soft alluvial layers. Alluvium represents an extremely complex soil formation, sections bordering diluvium being characterized by sharp undulations. Various difficulties are therefore encountered in shield tunneling work undertaken in such ground conditions. Particularly, at work sites lying in an unstable, waterbearing layer with high permeability, shield excavation becomes utterly impossible, hampered by large amounts of underground water as well as land collapsing caused by the water. Even when work can somehow be accomplished by using chemical grouting or by lowering ground water level, which require extra expenses and time, undesirable effects such as ground surface settlement are unavoidable in projects undertaken in the past. The newly developed method allows safe and accurate tunnel excavation at normal speed and without giving any adverse effects on buildings above, even under such unstable ground conditions. An outline of this new method was announced at the "International Tunnel Symposium '78" held in Tokyo, and the method has since been employed in a number of tunneling projects in this country. INTRODUCTION In this paper, we are describing a current concept for placing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in sites deep underground to be used as a strategic Future Secure Reserve Force (FSRF). The objective of such concepts is to utilize soil and rock cover to protect high value strategic weapons from destruction by nuclear attack. The burial deep underground achieves two purposes. First, it imposes a miss distance upon the attacking weapon equal to the depth of burial minus any penetration capability the weapon might have. This tends to offset increasing accuracy of weapon delivery. The other purpose is to absorb as much of the weapon's energy as possible, thus reducing the effects of powerful weapons. This use of soil or rock cover over military facilities began with the development of man's capability to loft projectiles. Until recently, underground military installations, by their nature, performed defensive functions. Since they are not mobile and their weapons in the past had very limited range, an enemy would have to approach them before an engagement could take place. Filling or sealing shafts of underground coal mines is required when the mine is declared inactive by the operator, permanently closed or abandoned for a period of time greater than 90 days. Although shaft filling requires the use of incombustible materials for the first fifty feet of the shaft, a sparking potential may exist which has been reported to be the cause in at least one shaft-filling explosion. This paper outlines the method used at the explosion site to monitor mine gases within the shaft to assure the safety of the workers involved in the remainder of the shaft-filling operations. Gases which were monitored include methane, oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Continuous sampling was conducted twenty-four hours per day to determine the methane liberation and accumulation of gases within the shaft. Once gas concentrations were evaluated, the need for ventilation in the shaft was obvious because methane accumulations within the shaft were in the explosive range. Several methods to ventilate the shaft were explored. The most practical seemed to be the dilution of gas concentrations with compressed air to inject a quantity of fresh air into the shaft. But, when the compressed air was stopped, a buildup of an explosive mixture reoccurred. The pattern of gas accumulation was then studied to find the correct combination of ventilation and shaft-filling time periods which would a1 low for the greatest reduction of the potential for an explosion. Gas concentration sampling continued during the remainder of shaft-filling operations at this shaft and four others at the same mine. In conclusion, this paper illustrates some of the problems which are often overlooked in a shaft-filling operation. If addressed, the work can be done in a safe and feasible manner.

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.'s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

Gold milling activities generate waste streams containing dissolved metals and cyanide, among other contaminants, that require some form of treatment prior to discharging to the environment. To date, this treatment has involved the destruction of cyanide through natural degradation, chemical oxidation, or a combination of both followed by the precipitation of metal hydroxides. Although these processes have been proven to be capable of achieving. regulatory levels for metals and cyanide, they often generate significant levels of cyanate and, at times, ammonia, that may be toxic to rainbow trout and thus undesirable for regulatory compliance. Tallon Metal Technologies Inc. (Tallon) has developed Vitrokele™, a chelating resin that has the ability to capture metals (including gold), both total and weak acid dissociable cyanide, as well as thiocyanate from both slurries and solutions. The loaded resin is eluted and returned to the recovery circuit while metals and cyanide are recovered from the eluent stream. This process was demonstrated at pilot scale at B.P. Resources' Hope Brook Gold Mine in Newfoundland, and more recently at Canamax's Bell Creek Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The results from these pilot programs showed metal and cyanide recoveries of 99% or more with the concentration of cyanide and metals in the effluent reduced to levels with minimal or no toxicity to rainbow trout. Furthermore, neither cyanate nor ammonia were generated from the process. The loaded resin was effectively stripped and re-introduced to the recovery circuit; cyanide was captured in the eluent stream and made available for recycling to the mill leaching circuit; and metals were captured for re-use, sale or disposal. This paper summarizes the results obtained from the pilot tests at the Bell Creek and Hope Brook Gold mine sites.

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company's policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

INTRODUCTION The planning process for projects requiring construction of tunnels in urban environments can be highly complex and involves interaction with professionals of many disciplines. Typically the initial step in the planning process is to establish basic design criteria for the tunnel or tunnel system consistent with its intended purpose. Such criteria might include acceptable tunnel geometry, minimum and maximum slope or other associated criteria. Ideally, once the basic criteria have been established, the next step in the process might include establishing technically feasible horizontal and vertical alignment and shaft siting alternatives and developing "ball park" construction and operational cost estimates for the alternatives. Comparisons can then be made regarding the relative technical and economic merits of the alternatives and the most favorable alignment(s) are selected for further study or preliminary design. Typically the last and perhaps the most important task that is conducted during the planning stage includes identifying issues and potential problems to be addressed during the design and construction stages of the project. Many issues warrant consideration during the planning phase of a tunneling project. For the purposes of this paper, these issues can be divided into two broad categories: technical and non-technical. Important technical issues include, among others, general design criteria, geotechnical and geoenvironmental issues, and constructibility issues. Important non-technical issues include, among others, right-of-way and easement related considerations, project scheduling constraints, both short and long term environmental impacts and overall cost/benefit aspects of the project. With respect to influence on the planning process, these two groups of issues often cannot be separated completely. INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. INTRODUCTION In May 1984, The Canadian Pacific Railway awarded to the Joint Venture of Foundation of Canada, Ltd. of Toronto, Atlas Construction Co. of Montreal, and S. A. Healy Co. of Chicago the contract for the construction of 27,000 ft of tunnel starting from the east portal. Selkirk contractors, the Joint Venture of Foundation, Atlas and Healy, which had successfully completed for CPR in 1983 the construction of both portal structures for this tunnel, studied several different alternative proposals before presenting its bid pooling each individual company's technical resources and experiences. (Foundation had just completed in association with other companies a similar tunnel project in British Columbia, and the S. A. Healy Co. could provide its experience of more than 40 miles of tunnels excavated by full face boring machines.) Among the alternatives investigated there was a fully circular tunnel to be excavated by a 30 ft diameter TBM, a full section drill and shoot proposal, and a mixed alternative, the "key hole" proposal, consisting of a TBM driven circular top heading followed by benching to design size. Technical, geological and economical considerations determined the alternative that was eventually proposed to CPR. HISTORICAL NOTES The tunnel construction parallels an existing tunnel through the Selkirk mountains that was excavated in 1885. In order to reduce the grade to 1% on the heavily loaded west bound trains, the new tunnel was at a lower elevation and lengthened to almost 9 miles. Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

The City of Phoenix, Arizona designed a 7.2 km (4.5 mi) long water transmission main from the South Mountain Reservoir to the Ahwatukee Foothills Reservoir to address the growing demand for drinking water in the southeast valley. The pipeline design called for a bored tunnel in a very environmentally sensitive area. The Reach3B contract included an 2.44 m (8 ft) diameter TBM excavated tunnel, 1,847 m(6,060 ft) in length. The geotechnical investigation revealed that the tunnel would likely pass through zones of loose to moderately cemented soils (caliche). The primary tunnel support would consist of rock bolts, circular steel ribs, hard wood lagging, and mine straps. A TBM that could handle the ground conditions and allow for efficient ground support installation was required. This paper describes the construction of a small diameter rock tunnel in challenging ground conditions.

Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

With the utilization of most of the "high dam" sites for hydro-electric power and the completion of most railroad routes, many tunnel contractors were extremely doubtful that tunnel driving would continue to be an important element of heavy contracting. Experience has proved otherwise. The ever-increasing need for rapid transit and for pollution control have generated, and will continue for the indefinite future to generate, a very high level of tunneling activity. At the same time, the costs of construction have traveled an upward curve in the tunnel industry, as in all other types of construction. As a result, Owners, Engineers and Contractors have sought ways and means of constructing more economically through the development and use of labor-saving devices and techniques. The development of mining machines and lasers has contributed tremendously to such economy. Before giving you a contractor's viewpoint on Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling, it may be well to provide some background as to matters which give rise to that viewpoint. Construction contractors in general, and tunnel contractors in particular, have always had to contend with the physical environment in which the work has to be accomplished. However, when a building contractor has constructed his foundation, and certainly after he has "closed in", he deals thereafter with known physical conditions, or at least with conditions which he could reasonably have estimated would occur. Except, perhaps, for the hazard as to earthquakes, he has cleared Nature's threats. A tunnel contractor, however, must give thought to what the physical environment may do to his job, each and every day that he is driving a tunnel. The flotation of Azara barite tailings was investigated using crude rubber nut oil (RNOc), refined rubber nut oil (RNOR) and oleic acid as fatty acid collectors. Chemical characterization of the rubber nut oils indicated high acidity, high saponification values and high iodine indexes, which are indicative of a high fatty acid compositions. The Azara barite tailings analyzed 64.6% BaSO4 by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Gravity and magnetic separation techniques yielded a BaSO4 concentrate with a grade of 74.8% and a recovery of 92.5%. Barium sulfate grades of 90.0%, 92.8% and 94.8% with recoveries of 80.3%, 85.4% and 86.7% were achieved with collector dosages of 750g/t crude rubber nut oils, refined rubber nut oils and oleic acid, respectively. Hence, rubber nut oils are effective fatty acid collectors for the flotation of barite tailings.

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.
