Flotation columns are widely used in mineral processing and coal preparation industry today. Mathematical modeling of flotation columns has conventionally been done using axial dispersion or tank-in-series models. However, for design and scale up purposes these models are not adequate enough because they do not provide detailed information of the flow fields within the column. This paper presents a Two-Dimensional, Two-Phase. Fluid-dynamic Model and its numerical solutions for some cases encountered in column flotation. The MAC (Marker and Cell) method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions, and based on this method a computer code COLUMNFLOW was developed. The simulated flow field reveals the presence of a circulation flow structure in flotation columns, which could be one of the main reasons for mixing in column flotation. The effects of some parameters such as superficial gas and liquid velocities on the characteristics of the flow structure in flotation columns were also tested with the numerical model.

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for con¬tinued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. . The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950; the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. 6.1 INTRODUCTION The three most critical factors in successful heap leaching operations are: • The methods employed to pretreat ore (i.e, crushing and agglomeration); • Placement of ore on the leach pad (heap building techniques); and • Wetting of the ore with cyanide (solution application techniques). Improper execution of any of these initial steps may result in a substantial sacrifice of total metal extraction or, in the worst case, in project failure. Ore preparation in terms of crushing and agglomeration was discussed in Chapter 5; this chapter therefore focuses on commonly employed techniques for heap construction and solution application. The main objective of heap construction is to obtain the most homogeneous heap possible. "Channeling" of leachate in heaps with preferential seepage paths leads to preferential leachate distribution and uneven/incomplete extraction. The two main contributing causes of channeling are inadequate attention to heap construction and uneven solution application. These pitfall s can best be avoided through a knowledge of the various techniques available and the applicability and success of these techniques with various ore types and site conditions. The remainder of this chapter provides a discussion on these two subjects. 6.2 HEAP BUILDING TECHNIQUES Successful heap building techniques vary with the type of ore and, since no two orebodies are exactly alike, some slight modifications are usually necessary for each specific project. However, it is possible to generalize in terms of the appropriate techniques to be used with ores having similar characteristics. This section discusses the three most commonly used methods of heap construction and provides some guidelines with regard to ore types, construction constraints, and lift height parameters for each of the three. 6.2.1 Run-of-Mine Dumping and Dozing The run-of-mine method of heap building can only be used with ore of a highly silicious nature (i.e., ore which will not generate a large amount of

Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976. Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen percent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March '80, Sidbec-Normines use coke addition as a current operation. This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port-Cartier pellet plant.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

The Ekati process plant flowsheet features the common steps in diamond recovery plant design. Primary treatment and concentration is by crushing, scrubbing, high-pressure grinding rolls and heavy medium separation (Fig. 1). Secondary concentration is by an attrition mill; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation and X-ray sorting (Fig. 2). All of these are performed on site, although final sorting of the diamonds into commercial categories will be carried out elsewhere. The initial throughput rate is 9 kt/d (9,900 stpd), increasing to 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) during the first 10 years of operation. A range of ore characteristics will be encountered that will effect the plant operating conditions during the life of the mine. The adopted design envelope is based on these expected variations. The design is based on the use of large-scale equipment, incorporating the latest and most efficient technology available. Where proven technology exists, no attempt was made to reinvent the wheel. However, where recently developed technology offers a significant advantage, this has been incorporated into the design. The Ekati run-of-mine (ROM) and coarse ore handling facilities are unheated, to take advantage of the better handling characteristics of the frozen ore in winter. The stockpile reclaim features an MMD mineral sizer (a toothed roll crusher) to minimize the problems of handling thawed, sticky kimberlite in the summer and break frozen lumps in the winter. All processing downstream from primary crushing and the coarse ore stockpile is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building. Personnel involvement in the process is mini¬mized by using a Modicon Quantum series PLC with human-machine-interfaces (HMI) running Wonder-ware software on dedicated personal computers.

Model-Based Expert Control systems (MBEC) are on-line supervisory dynamic optimization systems which combine the ability of a phenomenological model to generate a large amount of information about the state of the process and predict its evolution, with the flexibility of a rules-based approach to take plant constraints into account and apply a complex control strategy. For its new concentrator started in 1995 in Kiruna (Sweden), LKAB has implemented a progressive grinding flowsheet with closed-circuit autogenous grinding followed by closed-circuit pebble grinding with ore pebbles. The standard for instrumentation in this new plant is very high. The control hardware consists of a Distributed Control System (DCS) through which the operators interact with the plant, supplemented by a site-level Management Information System (MIS). A state-of-the-art MBEC system was imbedded in the MIS by the authors before plant start-up. It consists of several modeling and expertise software modules: a phenomenological process model and a Kalman filter estimate continuously the state of the process, an optimizer calculates an optimum feedrate, while rules-based modules establish production targets and key process set-points. The decision to install the MBEC system as an integral part of the new plant before start-up illustrates the current maturity of the technology, i.e., enough know-how was accumulated through former projects to design and develop the system to a large extent without accessing the plant. The feasibility and the power of dynamic optimization systems were previously demonstrated in Kiruna pre-existing concentrator by the authors. First, a MBEC system was installed on the three existing pebble mill circuits, providing both an increase in quality (stabilised size distribution) and a 10% increase in capacity. An on-line expert control system with limited modeling capabilities was also installed in the existing flotation plant, with the aim of stabilizing phosphorous content in the concentrate and optimizing collector additions. Both objectives have been achieved.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. Geologically, this region is occupied by Mesozoids, a folded belt of Triassic and Jurassic sediments and volcanics. Gold mineralization is of Upper Jurassic age. Most of the stream placers formed during the Quaternary. Placer gold was first discovered in 1916. Between 1930 and 1957, mining was carried out by the "Dal'stroi," a Russian death- camp organization. At the mines, "Dal 'stroi" exterminated 5-7 million captives taken from Russia's different colonies, each prisoner extracting 1-2 kg of gold before he died. Since 1966 the mines have been worked mechanically. About 10 mining districts are now active, producing altogether 110-135 tons of gold annually.

It is well known that surface moisture and fine content have a strong influence on coal handle- ability. It is known as well that these two criteria are not sufficient to classify coals. It seems that certain types of coals are intrinsically difficult to handle, the reason being still not well understood. For these coals, moisture and fine content are aggravating factors and have to be strictly controlled in order to avoid handling problems (sticking, arching in hoppers.. .). CERCHAR has undertaken research aimed at identifying the role of intrinsic characteristics of coal with regard to handling properties. Two of them have been identified as particularly relevant : the clay content and the "colloidal particle" content. Two simple tests commonly used for soils characterisation, but never used so far for coal, have been applied to characterise a wide range of coals. The derived classification has been compared with an empirical classification based on dry screening tests. DRY SCREENING EXPERIMENTS Dry screening at a relatively low screen aperture (e.g. 6 mm) may be considered as a good tool for assessing the handleability of wet fine coals. Difficult to handle coals always lead to rapid plugging of the screen whilst easy to handle coals can be screened without difficulties. A wide range of coals has been selected with various ash, moisture and fine content. Their characteristics are given in table 1. The experimental set-up consists of a 2 t.p.h vibrating screen equipped with two automatic re- cording balances collecting respectively oversize and undersize material. Provided that the feeding rate is accurately controlled, good reproducibility in the percentage passing as a function of time is obtained. Figure 1 gives examples of different types of relations that were obtained. - LMC coal exhibits a behaviour that is characteristic of easy to handle coals : % passing remains constant in the course of the screening operation. - B coal behaves slightly differently. One observe first a rapid decrease in the flow passing through the screen and then a stabilization. Hand- ling properties can be considered as intermediately - The curve relative to LHB coal is characteristic of a very difficult to handle coal that blinds the screen almost immediately. It is necessary to point out the fact that the classification derived from screening experiments is a global one, including not only intrinsic factors but also external factors such as fines and moisture content. Comments The venerable straight-line equation Y = Bx + A is again being rediscovered, but this time by economists, mining engineers and geologists. Two economists, William Sharpe and Harry Markowitz, from the University of Chicago and Stanford University, respectively, won the 1990 Noble Prize in economics by showing that the price of individual stocks can be related to the Dow Jones industrial average (DJIA) using the straight-line equation. According to Bill Chidester, Investment Analyst, Scientific Investment, Sharpe and Markowitz strongly emphasized the role of the beta (B) value while considering the alpha (A) value to be "pretty unimportant." Chidester claims that alpha is the "mystery" value that causes individual stocks to behave independently of popular stock-market indices, such as the DJIA. For many years, mining engineers and geologists have routinely called alpha the "nugget" or surprise element in geostatistical analyses in which a designated distance (x-axis) is related to the variance of the grade (y-axis). Because the influence of the independent variable (distance) over the dependent variable (grade variance) is ideal when alpha is equal to zero, any increase in alpha represents a loosening of influence or control within the relationship. This can be good news or bad news - good news if you are an economist sorting out off-trend stocks and bad news if you are a mining engineer trying to predict sulfur in a coal seam. With many mining trends, such as those involving the relationship of distance to the variance of grade, a mathematical relationship can be formed. In geostatistical analysis, the point where a mathematical trend ends is known as the sill. If the difference between the variance of grade at the sill and at alpha can be determined, then an estimate of the relative control for a given distance can be obtained by comparing the sill value to alpha. The extent to which alpha approaches the value of the sill provides an indication of independence or loss of trend. The alpha concept may find application with distance, time or fluid problems. The point of change can be either a change in trend or the trend limit. However, even without a clearly defined point of change or trend limit, increasing alpha values always infer loss of trend. Alpha analysis should be regarded as a valuable tool when sorting out many sets of mining data. The application of this user-friendly concept to reserves, material transport, fluid flow and other areas has been, and will continue to be, the basis of many important past and future developments in mining and geology.

Anything to do with radioactive waste disposal in these days is regarded in a very negative light and with the thought that no possible good could come of anything connected with it. However, it should be remembered that the Austrian government's disposal of some tailings from the Joachimsthal mines resulted in what was probably the most important scientific discovery of this century. In 1898 the Austrian government agreed to give a Polish research assistant working at the School of Physics in Paris one ton of tailings to enable her to carry on her research. Her meagre stipend and the lack of a research grant did not allow her to purchase the ore which was relatively expensive. The uranium oxide in it being used to colour the famous Czechoslovakian glassware. As we all know, from this ton of ore Marie Curie by her own physical labours extracted one gram of radium. When she started this research she was pregnant with her first child. Nothing of course was known at the time about the biological effects of radiation. Very shortly, of course, the acute effects such as skin burns were observed but it was some years before the chronic effects were noted. It is impossible to estimate to what cumulative amount of radiation that Marie, Pierre and their daughter Irene were exposed but it must have been enormous and it took its toll. Marie complained for many years of fatigue and exhaustion and at one point she was seriously ill with some kidney problem which was probably due to toxic effects of ingestion of uranium. She lived until she was 67, however, and died of leukemia. Her eldest child, Irene, who carried on her work, did not live as long; she died of leukemia at 57. The other daughter, Eve, related how her mother and she went on a skiing holiday not many years before her death, and how her mother at this time would swim 300 meters at a stretch. (Curie, 1937). This suppleness of limb could have been due to the anti-inflammatory action of radiation. Brought on stream in 1975, the 10,000-tpd copper oxide processing plant of Anamax Mining Co. at Twin Buttes, Ariz., is now at design capacity. Based on acid agitation leaching, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning, the Anamax plant bridges an ore to metal gap by producing mine site copper cathodes from lime-bearing oxidized feed. Until recently, such material was considered submarginal because copper recovery was uneconomic using conventional methods. The new Twin Buttes oxide plant, the largest of its kind in North America, is one stage in the expansion of Anamax, a joint venture owned equally by The Anaconda Co. and Amax Inc. Other phases include an accelerated stripping program in the pit, an expansion of the sulfide concentrator from 32,000 to 40,000 tpd, and construction of a 57 MW diesel generating station for the oxide plant. Once the basic oxide flowsheet had been selected, Anamax awarded a contract to a joint venture of Arthur G. McKee and Co.' (Western Knapp Engineering Div.) and Davy Powergas' (a member of the Davy International group). The contract covered process design, engi¬neering, procurement, and construction. The property, identified by Banner Mining Co. in the 1950s and developed by Anaconda, was put into production in 1965 as an open pit mine equipped with a 32,000-tpd sulfide flotation concentrator. The Twin Buttes mine has since become one of the largest earth¬moving operations in the world, excavating some 10 tons of waste per ton of ore. At the original sulfide mill feed rate, the mining fleet moved 375,000 tpd of material (225,000 tpd alluvium and 150,000 tpd of rock). The most significant copper mineral in the ore body is chalcopyrite, which is scattered in pockets of weak mineralization. Cap oxidation has progressed to depths of several hundred feet, principally as chryso¬colla. Present estimates place minable reserves at 347 million tons of sulfide ore grading 0.6% copper and 55 million tons of oxide ore grading 0.9% recoverable copper from 1.25% total copper. The nonre¬coverable fraction is composed of native copper and insoluble copper oxides and sulfides. The oxide ore has been partially stripped, and 25 million tons having a copper content greater than 0.6% have been stockpiled. The stripping of oxide ore to expose sulfides will continue for several years. The copper oxide studies launched by Banner Mining in the 1950s were continued by Anaconda. Process routes investigated included: acid leaching; cyanide leaching; segregation roasting; chlorination, oxidation, and reduction; flotation in combination with leaching; cal¬cite flotation plus leaching; copper oxide flotation; and sulfidization flotation. By late 1968 test work favored a low temperature roast followed by an ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach of the ore. During this period, acid leaching had been discounted because of excessive con¬sumption of expensive acid by the high limestone ore matrix. Restric¬tive SO2 emission controls in 1971 suggested an increase in acid production and availability at a lower cost. Research then switched to acid leaching, resulting in development of the present flowsheet. Mechanically agitated leaching in a cascaded series of tanks was selected in preference to vat leaching after piloting a stirred-tank system. Preliminary testing of vat leaching indicated that inter-vat solution clarification problems could be caused by gas evolution from leaching of high limestone ore. Lack of research time for resolution of this problem, plus success of the pilot agitation system, dictated the final flowsheet selection. In 1973 Anamax decided to proceed with agitation acid leaching to produce liquor for a solvent ion exchange (SIX) and electrowinning (EW) installation. At that time, such systems were proving their eco¬nomic viability, and they allowed direct recovery of high quality cath odes while bypassing the smelting and refining of lower grade cement copper precipitates. The Anamax oxide plant processes a grade of about 1% recovera¬ble copper from stockpiled sources and new mine production. Unit operations include size reduction, agitation leaching, countercurrent decantation washing of residue, pH adjustment of solution, clarifica¬tion, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning of copper, with a mini¬mum of environmental impact. The feed to the primary crushers is composed of: 1) -10-in. stockpiled oxide ore, which has passed through the mine crusher and has been grade-segregated to allow blending for a consistent feed material. 2) -4-ft ROM oxide ore stockpiled in the early mining operation. 3) -10-in. ore currently being mined. Ore is delivered in 100-ton mine trucks to a dump pocket, where an apron feeder transfers the ore to an inclined 6-in. fixed grizzly. The grizzly oversize passes through a 48 x 60-in. primary jaw crusher, where it is reduced to -6 in. The fixed grizzly undersize and the crusher product are conveyed to a 4-in. vibrating grizzly. Oversize from this grizzly reports to a 7-ft Standard cone crusher, where it is reduced to -1 in. The crusher product and the vibrating grizzly undersize are conveyed to two 8 x 20-ft double-deck vibrating screens that operate in closed circuit with two 7-ft short head cone crushers. Screen undersize (-1/2 in.) is delivered to a covered conical fine ore stockpile with a designed live capacity of 15,000 st. Beneath the stockpile are ten Pioche belt feeders feeding two conveyor belts that supply the milling circuits. Each group of five feeders has two variable speed and three fixed speed drives. Grinding to 95% -48 mesh is done in two parallel lines, each consisting of an 111/1 x 18S -ft rod mill and a 12' x 30-ft ball mill in open circuit. Water is added to maintain a pulp density of 72% solids in the mills. Further water additions are made to the ball mill discharge sumps to create a 60% solids slurry for transfer to the leaching reactors. The nominal grinding rate is 440 tph solids. A splitter box on the product from the mills separates the incoming slurry into two streams, one for the leaching reactors and the other for the pH adjustment reactors. This split is determined by the lime content of the feed material and the pH of solution entering the pH adjustment reactors. Five 30-ft diam by 31-ft high mechanically agitated, rubber-lined leach tanks are arranged in cascade, with gravity transfer from one to another by enclosed launders. Concentrated sulfuric acid (93.2%) from storage is added to the pulp principally at the first leach tank, and the reacted slurry leaving the cascade after a 5-hr residence time at 50% solids is pumped to countercurrent decantation (CCD) wash thickeners.' At this point, most of the soluble copper has been leached from the ore. Up to 250 lb of sulfuric acid is consumed per ton of ore, the acid being supplied in tank cars from a nearby smelter. Leached slurry at 50% solids is washed countercurrently with return raffinate from the SIX plant in a series of four Doff-Oliver center caisson, 400-ft diam thickeners. Solids advance from thickeners No. I through No. 4 to the tailings dam. SIX raffinate advances from thickener No. 4 to thickener No. l, where a pregnant solution overflows to pH adjustment. To optimize solvent extraction, the pH of the pregnant solution from CCD thickener No. I is adjusted from 1.5 to 2.5 by adding unreacted ground slurry (split from the grinding circuit) to the preg¬nant overflow of No. I CCD thickener. The resulting slurry is retained for 45 min in three mechanically agitated leach tanks. CO, generated during leach and pH adjustment is ducted to a demister, where entrained acid droplets are removed. The cleaned CO, and the No. 4 CCD underflow are the only effluents from the plant. The underflow of No. 4 thickener mixes with tailings from the sulfide concentrator and is neutralized. Slurry exits the pH adjustment vessels at about 10% solids and

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

Cessation of open pit mining in 1996 at the McLaughlin hot-spring type gold deposit has resulted in the development of two pit lakes that will be managed as permanent lakes with a total storage capacity of 10,000 acre-feet. The south pit lake developed from alkaline ground water infiltration and had an initial pH of 7.2. It contained high concentrations of boron and chloride, indicating that it consisted of a mix of meteoric and evolved connate waters. Numerous carbon dioxide gas vents were present initially in the shallow south pit lake, but as the pit lake increased in depth, gas venting ceased and carbon dioxide is retained in the lower layer of the chemically stratified lake. Continued increase of dissolved carbon dioxide in the lower layer increases the potential for a limnic eruption. A chemocliie occurs at a depth of 47 m. The upper layer of the lake has lower pH, temperature, and conductivity than the lower layer. Effluent from ore and waste rock piles directed into the south pit lake has contributed to high levels of antimony, arsenic, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc. Iron oxyhydroxide is abundant in mine effluent that enters the pit lake and adsorption onto this phase has lowered the arsenic and antimony concentrations. The north pit lake formed primarily from winter surface runoff. The acidic water, pH 4.56, initially had high concentrations of cobalt, mercury, and nickel derived from weathering products of pyritized serpentinite and shales. Buffering by wall rocks has established a slightly alkaline pH of 7.62. The concentrations of trace metals in the north pit lake have substantially decreased due to continued dilution of the lake by surface runoff and remediation of parts of the pit walls that have been covered by backfill.

Arseno Processing Ltd. has developed process technology for the extraction of gold from refractory ores and concentrates. These ores, which do not respond to conventional extraction processes, are rapidly becoming the primary targets for mining companies wishing to become significant gold producers. It has recently been estimated that by the mid 1990's, the annual gold production from the Pacific Basin Epithermal Arc in southeast Asia could be as high as 550 tonnes. Within this area the Porgera deposit under development by Placer, Renison and MIM, and the Lihir Island deposit under development by Kennecott have been shown to be refractory and require pretreatment before the gold can be extracted. The additional deposits which are now starting to be developed in this area are also expected to require such pretreatment. The Arseno process promises to be an economical pretreatment for these ores and to result in the maximum achievable gold recovery. Numerous refractory deposits are also known in Australia, North America, China and other parts of the world. Samples from many deposits throughout the world have been tested using the Arseno process conditions and the consistently successful results have demonstrated its widespread application. The samples which have been tested include ores in which the gold is locked in pyrite, marcasite or arsenopyrite. The process is insensitive to the sulphur content of the feed. Feed materials containing from 1 % to 50% sulphur have been tested successfully with the process. In the Arseno refractory gold process, sulphide minerals are dissolved so that the contained gold becomes accessible for subs7qu7nt gold recovery. This gold recovery is achieved by cyamdat1on of the process residue. For many of the materials which have been tested, gold extractions in excess of 95% have been achieved.
