The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations. Based on a simplified model for the motion of particulate materials in horizontal, rotating cylinders, approximate expressions have been derived relating the power consumption of a tumbling mill to its dimensions and speed of rotation and to the amount and nature of the charge. The basic assumptions underlying the model are that there is no slip between the charge and the mill shell, that the free surface of the charge remains essentially planar during rotation and that there is no transfer of momentum from the material flowing down the free surface back to the mill shell. The relationships formulated from this model have been shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental results taken from the literature. While the requirements of the model are most closer met at low speeds of rotation, the results appear to be valid even for speeds up to 70-80 percent of the critical speed. Poorer agreement between theory and experiment is found when the charge consists of relatively large particles (balls) and when the filling of the mill exceeds 50 percent of the available volume. Qualitative explanations of these deviations have been offered.

The Los Bronces Mine and Concentrator, one of the three operating units of Compania Minera Disputada de Las Condes S.A. (an Exxon Minerals Co. affiliate), is located in the high Andes of East-Central Chile approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Santiago at an elevation of 3,650 meters above sea level. (Figure 1). Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is located at an elevation of about 500 meters above sea level and enjoys a very mild climate, similar to some areas of California. At the mine site, however, extremely heavy winter conditions prevail occasionally, with very heavy snow and the resulting snow avalanches endangering installations and people. At the same time, ideal skiing conditions are found at the nearby ski resort of Portillo and Farellones. Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the western hemisphere is only about 55 kilometers further to the northeast of the Los Bronces mine.

The Coeur d&apos;Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district&apos;s longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept.for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slipforming placement technique. lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/hr. The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to be operated remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

The paper will begin with the physical parameters of design in a wire saw. These will include such things as the type of wire used, abrasives, horsepower of operation, and drive components. It will then go into the many uses of wire sawing in the quarrying and finishing of granite. This will include a step by step program of the removal of a block unit of granite from the quarry site through the finished slabbing and jointing in the plant. After this, there will be a small insertion of possibilities of wire sawing techniques in underground excavation work. This would be speculative only. I will use the example of powerhouse type of excavation work given to me by Dr. John Reed, and try to explain how I would attack this type of work using wire saws. Several slides of both design criteria and actual installations were shown.

Each year approximately 5,000 tons of a sulfide concentrate grading 1 ounce gold per ton are produced at this operation. The material is refractory and as shipping costs and custom smelter charges increase, options to process it on site are becoming more attractive. Three methods of treating the ore have been investigated in detail. The first option of ultra fine grinding the concentrate produces a 35% gold recovery with relatively low capital and operating costs. A second option of pressure oxidation is very capital intensive and has high operating costs but recoveries in the order of 95% are achievable. The final option, biological leaching offers both capital and operating costs which are less than pressure oxidation, while still achieving 90% gold recoveries. Bioleaching of gold concentrates has been gaining acceptance but there is a risk factor associated with this or any emerging technology.

Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid-H2SO5) is used to destroy cyanides in tailings slurries due to its rapid reaction and low capital and operating costs. Due to its instability, Caro's acid is generated at the mine site using a hot or cold process. The majority of gold mines that use Caro's acid use the FMC hot process. In the FMC hot process, it is not necessary to cool the Caro's acid to minimize decomposition since it is used immediately upon generation. In contrast, the cold process uses a chiller to cool the raw materials and product. This paper will show, using laboratory and field data, that there is virtually no difference in Caro's acid yield between the cold and the FMC hot processes. Caro's acid yield depends on the mole ratio and concentration of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and is independent of operating temperature.

Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid) was successfully field tested as a cyanide detoxification agent at a North American gold mine. An on-site FMC generator injected Caro's acid into a mill tailings slurry sump. The WAD cN-(weakly acid dissociable plus free cN-) was reduced from 40-108 ppm to below the target level of 20 ppm using a 1/1 mole ratio of CA (Caro's acid) /CN-. At an inlet CA/CN-mole ratio of 1.8/1, WAD CN­concentrations as low as 4 ppm cN-were achieved. Raw material costs for the cyanide detoxification were cut by 60% compared to using hydrogen peroxide (H202) alone. Detoxification time with Caro's acid was much faster compared to H202. This resulted in completion of detoxification before the treated slurry reached the tailings pond thereby substantially reducing the probability of wildlife fatalities.

Construction of two shafts, as well as associated deep concrete structures, for a major storm sewer project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin required ground water control and temporary ground support to depths ranging from 19.2m to 55.0m. Lowering of the site ground water table eras not possible because of potential consequences for existing nearby structures. Construction entailed completion of two shaft collars into bedrock. In addition to the shafts, several adjacent connected. structures were completed. Ground freezing was selected to provide temporary ground support and ground water control for all excavations. The first application of using reinforced frozen earth was successfully incorporated on the project. The procedure enabled the contractor to create openings in excess of 9.1m in height, without bracing, through highly stressed frozen earth walls. Design features and construction procedures for completion of ground freezing and related excavation are reported.

Industrial flotation of sulfide ores is 80 years old. It has gone through many advances to date. However most flotation operations are still struggling to improve performance, which as a worldwide average is at the 90% level. What can be done to push the ceiling to 95% or better without performing finer primary grind, nor without duplicating flotation plant capacity? Such "unique task" can be performed by the low volume high capacity new flotation equipment known as the JAMESON CELL, when used as, "post-scavenger" of final plant tails. Improved efficiencies are obtained mainly from two cases: -Particles which never contacted a bubble. -Particles sheared-off by cell turbulence due to reduced number of hydrophobic sites. The application reverses conventional trend of using large volume mechanical cells by trade-in with smaller efficient equipment: resulting in reduced capital expenditures and operating costs. Outstanding "pre-rougher" applications are also presented.

A computer performs all logic and computations customarily done by hand in preparation of engineers&apos; estimates or contractors&apos; bids on tunnel-shaft systems. The program described is based on construction methods, work forces and equipment selections corresponding to the current state-of-the-art of rock, soft ground and cut-and-cover tunneling. The program contains logic to permit estimates of cost of complicated tunnel-shaft systems; it is not necessary to input quantities, as the program calculates those from the tunnel design that is internally generated. In any estimate, the program bases its cost computation on user-input requirements and site conditions, such as tunnel shape and size, shaft depth, ground characteristics, construction methods, and other factors. To provide great flexibility, the user of the program is provided with options for accepting designs built into the program or overriding these designs by his own inputs. An illustrative example is presented.

The Minerals Processing Section of Surface Combustion is currently engineering and erecting a plant designed to produce 400,000 LTPY of 95% metalized pellets from raw magnetite concentrate, This venture is the first domestic commercial facility that will manufacture pre-reduced pellets as an integral part of a process to produce steel. Surface Combustion has developed the methods that will be used. Midrex, a division of Surface Combustion&apos;s parent company, Midland-Ross, will own and operate this plant. The site is adjacent to the City of Portland, Oregon on a 15 acre hydraulically-filled area on the east bank of the Willamette River. Either filter cake or concentrates in slurry form will be purchased from Marcona in Peru, delivered to the dock facility by ocean vessels and distributed to a pond for wet storage. Reclamation from the pond will be with a conventional dredge delivering concentrate to a thickener.

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble cop- per from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

Laboratory flotation tests were carried out on six Polish samples of different rank. Each coal sample was screened into 7 size fractions. The floatability of size -by- size for various size ranges for different samples was investigated as: well as the original samples. The results showed that in flotation of size -by -size, the intermediate size had the maximum floatability. The range of this intermediate sizes varied with the rank of the coal. Entrainment was shown to be an important mechanism to the recovery of fine particles in flotation of the original samples".

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

The New Celebration Gold Mine is located 32 km south of the regional mining centre of Kalgoorlie. The current mill throughput is 1.7 million tonnes per annum with a gold production of around 120,000 ounces per year. The main source of ore for the mill comes from the Hampton Boulder and Pernatty pits. Over the last two years the oxide reserves from these pits have been depleted and the harder primary sulphide ores are now being processed. This change has led to a decrease in cyanide extractable gold.

When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

The construction of a major sewerage scheme requiring 15.3 km of 5.5m excavated diameter tunnel in basalt, mixed and soft ground has been undertaken by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. A double shielded Tunnel Boring Machine was selected to excavate 13.7 km of basalt and mixed ground. Advanced methods for recording operational data on the TBM were introduced. Progress to date has shown that the TBM can excavate rock very effectively with a best weekly production of 178.8m; soft ground has been encountered and successfully handled.
