Increased recycling of waste paper has been emphasized in recent years in both the USA and Canada for environmental and economic reasons. Removal of ink particles from the waste paper pulp is therefore necessary. One of the most promising methods for ink removal is froth flotation. Our study investigated the feasibility of a simplified flotation scheme which showed that about 90-92% ink removal can be achieved while 95-97% ink removal is achievable if a hydrophobic polymer is used ahead of flotation. The clean paper pulp recovery was over 90%. The effects of pulping pH, flotation pH, and concentrations of flotation and polymeric reagents are discussed in the paper.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

The selective depression of pyrite obtained from Kentucky No.9 seam in coal flotation with various kinds of inorganic and organic chemicals was systematically examined. Most of the organic chemicals tested showed little selectivity in pyrite depression. It was found that both orthophosphate and pyrophosphate were effective for the selective depression of coal pyrite in coal flotation using fuel oil as a collector. At substantially low concentrations of pyrophosphate, the flotation of coal pyrite was completely depressed over a wide pH range, while the coal flotation remained unaffected. The mechanism of the selective depression of pyrite by phosphates has been explained with the help of thermodynamic calculations of iron-phosphate-water systems and zeta potential measurements. It was shown that pyrophosphate reacts strongly with iron ions of pyrite to form stable hydrophilic iron pyrophosphate complexes on pyrite surfaces.

This is a summary of what has happened to the domestic production of two industrial minerals vital to a healthy US economy: fluorspar and barite. A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. FLUORSPAR Some 9% of the fluorspar presently being consumed in the US is imported, whereas the use of fluorspar has not declined proportionately. Several factors can be mentioned.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

Previous models describing the aggregation of polymer-coated particles fail to take into account the fact that there are a limited number of sites onto which a polymer segment can adsorb, called "active" sites. Thus, the collision efficiency is a factor not only of the fractional surface coverage, but also of the number of active sites. In this study, a physical model of the flocculation system was devised in which the number of these sites could be varied, in order to study the effect on particle aggregation.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

The imposition of non-market regulations, such as the proposed SO2 standards for coal combustion, will typically lead to less efficient (thus more costly) production in a free enterprise system. For the coal industry these increased costs will occur in several ways, among which are mining less accessible low sulfur reserves and transporting low sulfur coal to distant markets. There are, of course, social benefits of reducing the S02 emissions from the use of high sulfur coal. The social benefits include decreased health risks, reduced damages to property, and certain unmeasurable benefits associated with the aesthetic appeal of clean air. Proponents of Federal S02 standards argue that the benefits gained from reduced emissions will exceed the costs borne by the coal industry and society in general in meeting the regulations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which costs of meeting future energy demands from coal will change under different sulfur standards. No attempt is made to estimate the benefits of imposing regulations. Specifically, the impact of SO2 standards on the private costs of meeting regional coal demands, the competitive positions of the nation's major coal producing regions, the degree to which strip mining as opposed to underground mining will be feasible, the amount of coal being processed, and the amount of coal transported over major rail routes will be analyzed.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

Water-swellable layered silicates, namely, the smectite clays can remove suspended materials (called herein as debris) and metal ions from aqueous streams. The present study shows that the flocculating and metal extracting abilities of smectite clay-based flocculants can be enhanced when these clays are used in conjunction with a specific anionic polymer. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the following: i) the clay-dispersing ability of the polymeric additive, that would translate into an increase in the clay-surface area available for the attachment of the debris particles onto the clay particles; ii) the possibility of dispersant-to-coagulant transition of the polymer during the later instants of the treatment process, as a result of reduction in solvency of the wastewater for the polymer due to the release of cationic species from the clay-based flocculant solids; iii) metal-complexing ability and adsorption properties of the polymer.

Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

The Churchill Falls Development will eventually be the largest source of hydroelectric power in North America. Churchill Falls was discovered in 1839, but until recent years it was not practical to begin development of this site to tap the 7 million horsepower available. This $1 billion project is located in Labrador, 700 miles northeast of Montreal and 650 miles northwest of St. Johns, Nfld. The construction will divert the Churchill River 5 miles upstream from the 245 foot Churchill Falls. Rapids above and below the Falls, together with the Falls proper, give a natural head of 1,040 feet. In contrast to the basic simplicity of the surface installations, the powerhouse labyrinth is astounding in size and complexity. The largest in the world, it consists of three major chambers - the powerhouse, 972 feet long by 81 feet wide and 154 feet high; the surge chamber, 763 feet long, 40 feet to 64 feet wide and 148 feet high; and the transformer gallery, 856 feet long by 50 feet wide and 39 feet high. The beginning of 21st century has heralded the global strategic importance, as evidenced by increase in energy prices and energy generation-emission-utilization dilemmas. In January 2008, the South African energy supplier, ESKOM had tabled the concept of power conservation and acknowledged the energy crisis until 2016. The concept is required of all energy users to reduce their electricity consumption, intensify energy efficiency and cautiously proceed with new projects. The generation of energy results in by-products called ?green house gases? (GHGs). To make a positive response to climate change and their effect on the environment, every energy user must ensure efficient energy use through technical and administrative means referred to generally as energy savings. This paper identifies mine ventilation engineering, in particular the electricity consumed by main fan units, as an area of potential energy savings. For a major mining company, electricity consumed by main ventilation fans alone can be in the order of 120 MW. Although a known fan engineering technique but scantly applied technology identified as the Hermit Crab can be seen as a ?quick win? project, due to its success in other industries such as cement and steel. The ?Hermit Crab? technique® involves upgrading or replacement of an impeller - whatever its origin - with a design impeller to suit the actual ventilation requirements, resulting in increased fan efficiencies. The cash flow benefits associated with a case study and its rollout of this technology have been calculated. For a 10% increase in main fan efficiency, would have a net present benefit of US$ 16.08m over 10 years. With the inclusion of carbon credits, this benefit rises to US$ 29.40m in total. Application of other available technologies, viz., composite materials, ventilation-on-demand and variable speed drives are discussed.

Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

INTRODUCTION Detailed investigation of a 60-ft-deep excavation in a mixed profile of sands and stiff clay was performed by the University of Illinois for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO). The work was coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather and Co., the General Engineering Consultant of METRO. Instrumentation was concentrated in a portion of braced excavation for the Gallery Place Station near the intersection of 7th and G Street. The early construction date, the 60 ft depth of cut, and the proximity of large buildings formed the basis for selection of this site as the focal point of observation and measurement. A history of lateral and vertical displacement is provided wherein movements which occurred during excavation to the full depth of cut and, subsequently, during station construction and the removal of braces are described in detail. Observations of preloading and the consequent brace loads and wall displacements are described. The effect of temperature change on brace loads is discussed and the measured apparent earth pressure for the 60-ft cut is provided. The paper discusses the relationship of lateral displacements of the cut wall to the construction procedure, and compares the lateral wall displacement with both lateral and vertical movement in the surrounding soil mass. Based on observed movement, the method by which displacement was predicted for a nearby 82-ft-deep excavation is described. The performance of the 82-ft-deep excavation has been summarized elsewhere (2).

The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. The increasing energy crisis, coupled with stringent environ- mental regulations, has created new demands for high capacity materials handling systems with unit train transporting and continuing surveillance of quality control. Effective and efficient methods of material conveyance are through high speed, high volume conveyor belts with the monitoring of quality through the utilization of automatic sampling. When we speak of high speed, high volume belt discharges we are referring to speed ranges from 600 to 750 FPM and volumes as high as 5500 TPH. To achieve the optimum operating sampling system for high capacity belt discharges, it is imperative that two major design characteristics be investigated and evaluated; namely technical analysis of operating conditions through application of ASTM design criteria and practical experience in the selection of equipment and the design of related components. The task of obtaining a sample of reasonable weight to represent an entire lot presents a number of problems and emphasizes the necessity for using standard sampling procedures.

Physical and chemical conditions permitting, in-situ leaching (ISL) of uranium offers a variety of advantages over conventional production methods including less surface disturbance and less solid waste. Commercial production of uranium by in-situ leaching techniques was initiated in 1963 in the Shirley Basin of Wyoming by Utah Construction. On a world-wide basis, ISL uranium production amounted to about 13.2 million pounds U3O8 in1999, approximately 16% of world output. Both acid and alkaline systems are used, the selection of which is primarily dependent upon groundwater quality and related reclamation requirements. ISL offers low capital costs per unit of annual capacity and is particularly flexible in adapting to changing market conditions.
