"Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." 'If these blue sky Ph.D.'s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn't make a lot of the suggestions they do."

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

"The formation of geopolymers from mine tailings using cold-bonding processes is known to be possible. Numerous cold-bonding methods exist, but the hydrothermal processes involving high temperatures and pressures in the presence of steam have been found to be the most ideal. This paper presents the results of successful preliminary studies to apply hydrothermal bonding processes to mine tailings agglomerates. Particle-size analysis revealed the particle size of the tailings waste to be 80 percent passing at 35 µm. The compressive strengths of the tailings pellets were shown to increase with time in the curing vessel, closely approaching the 400 lbf of standard iron ore concentrate pellets. These strengths are sufficient to allow use of the tailings pellets as aggregate materials for asphalt and cement. Additional applications may be possible, including reprocessing to extract more valuable materials and usage as agglomerated road-bed materials, backfills for building foundations, and replacements for sand and lime in cement.IntroductionMine tailings are a waste byproduct of ore concentration and are available in large quantities across the world. Despite their abundance, they have received little attention or consideration for beneficial use. One reason is that the chemical nature of the material is not well known. Another factor that has hindered direct usage is the fine particle size. This raises the questions: what is the composition of the tailings, and how can such fine solids be beneficially used? Because the mining industry produces concentrates, the tailings may be treated as concentrates and processed in the same fashion, but it would be inefficient to consider full sintering or induration conditions for materials that have little ore content. To achieve sustainable operation, the development of technologies to use these tailings is necessary. Mine tailings should not be considered waste, and an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality does not represent a sustainable solution for the future.One iron ore mine in Michigan is estimated to have accumulated more than 400 million metric tons of tailings during its last 30 years of operation, with an additional 180 million metric tons accumulated before the ore body is depleted. These mine tailings currently have no practical use, largely due to a scarcity of knowledge of their true physiochemical nature. It is thought that lack of quality control of the waste material prevents its use, but variability in the unprocessed ore prevents a consistent waste stream composition. The fact that the tailings are available in such great quantities makes them an extremely attractive resource. However, developing a sustainable, low-cost means of repurposing the mine tailings waste as a construction material may only be completed once the tailings are physically and chemically understood. Due to the high silica content of the material studied, cold bonding was determined to be the most viable method for processing the tailings into a usable product."

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's controlling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, what are the basic ingredients for good plant control? For good plant control, two requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

A mathematical model is proposed as a general formulation for the analysis and simulation of once-through crushing machines. Methods are described which can be used to estimate parameters of the proposed model from experimental data, thus minimizing reliance on backcalculation. The applicability of the model is demonstrated in the analysis and simulation of laboratory and full scale double roll crushers, and with evidence given for a laboratory scale cone crusher. An extension of the model for closed circuit crushing is also described.

A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

As part vi the development of the Coal Quality Expert (CQRN) --a computer program capable of predicting the impacts of coal quality on power plant performance, costs, and emissions control--several nationally important coals are being characterized to augment the coal quality database associated with the software. The project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) under the Clean coal Technology Program. Since 1989, CQ Inc. (a subsidiary of EPRI) has characterized seven bituminous coals from Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky and Oklahoma and six sub-bituminous coals from the Powder River Basin (PRB) in Montana and Wyoming. Coals from the PRB region--being burned more frequently in Midwestern and southern power plants to reduce emissions of sulfur oxide compounds--can sometimes contain significant concentrations of potentially toxic elements. Although no limits were imposed on air toxics emissions from fossil-fuel fired utilities by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, future regulations may be implemented at the conclusion of Federally-mandated emissions studies. One possible result is that any increased utilization of coals, including those from the PRB, may depend on the potential for removing toxic trace elements prior to combustion.

This paper examines the intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof by combining field investigation, laboratory testings, underground instrumentations, and numerical modelling. Cutter roof developed during the development of a set of longwall panel entries in a West Virginia coal mine was presented as a case study. Mining alternatives applicable to the mine are recommended. Cutter roof occurred in two other West Virginia coal mines were also investigated Detailed comparisons were made among the three cases. As a result of the extensive investigation, intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof failures under various conditions are presented from the practical and theoretical points of view.

Whilst mine planners almost universally assume deterministic forward commodity prices when undertaking valuations of mining projects, historical data well demonstrates that those prices are quite volatile. This paper seeks to understand and quantify how this forward price uncertainty will impact mining project valuation. This paper will also present a way of computing an upper bound on the expected Net Present Value (NPV) of a mining project given forward commodity price uncertainty.

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

Deep well disposal of selected industrial wastes has been proved feasible and acceptable in the New Orleans area by several industries including Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery and Chemical Plant where three of the six successful disposal wells in this area are operating. Well design and procedures for restoration of capacity are based, in most cases, on the principles of brine injection developed by oil producers in South Louisiana. Geological formations in the Gulf Coast area are suited to this type of injection because receiving strata are porous, isolated from sources of potable water and their water is compatible with the liquid wastes to be injected. This method of disposal is a simple, complete and economical solution to the problems presented by certain hard to treat wastes.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

The Bureau of Mines developed a detector for controlling sorting devices to separate the copper-bearing fragments from the barren portion of Michigan native copper and western porphyry copper ores. A successful sorter could be used to preconcentrate the ore and eliminate costly hoisting or hauling of waste. An induction balance unit was developed and used in sorting tests on crushed sized -1+1/2-inch (-2.5+1.3-cm) ores from the Kingston (0.9 pct CU) and Centennial (1.6 pct Cu) mines of Upper Michigan. Concentrates of 4.0 pct and 7.5 pct Cu, respectively, were obtained at recoveries of 85 and 80 pct of the copper in the feed. Eighty percent of the sorted ore was rejected as tailing. Sorting larger fragments improved the separation efficiency. Tests on -4+2-inch (-10+5-cm) sized Kingston (1.6 pct Cu) and Centennial (2.1 pct Cu) ore samples yielded concentrates of 4.3 and 4.5 pct Cu, respectively, with corresponding recoveries of 92 and 91 pct. About 60 pct of the sorted ore was discarded as tailing. Porphyry copper sulfide ores also responded to electronic sorting but at a lower separation efficiency. Sorting response was affected by the degree of segregation.

It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. We finally signed a contract with Maybeck, borrowing so much money that it scared us. I reached New York at the start of my second South American adventure on Jan. 9, 1916. In the Anaconda office I found that we were not to take the steamer for two weeks which gave me time to study reports on Potrerillos and Corocoro. Reno Sales, whom I had met in Butte only casually, was to go with us to South America. Though he was only a little older than I, he was already an unquestioned leader of our profession, and we became and remained good friends. William Braden was in New York and would return to Santiago with us. Tom Hamilton would also be returning from a vacation. Leighton Stewart, a young engineer who was to work for Braden, was going on the steamer with us, taking along his wife. And of course Dr. Ricketts would go along. He had just become engaged to John Greenway's half sister, Kate Greenway, and in order not to be away from her longer than was necessary, he did not reach New York until a day before we sailed. This made eight of us who would be in the party. We were to go to Corocoro first, as Braden had taken an option on the Chilean company there. Development was already under way. As reports came in by mail we tried to get as good an idea of the property as we could before the actual examination. Mr. Thayer "put us up" at India House, one of the best lunch clubs in New York, and Reno and I ate our lunches there almost every day. Thayer, Braden, and Cornelius Kelley, who was to succeed Mr. Ryan as president of Anaconda, joined us when they could. At the lunches they told us about the under- ground war in Butte a few years earlier. When I wrote my chapter on the Butte wars in Romantic Copper more than 15 years later I could not help being biased a bit by my friends, all of whom were on the Anaconda side. But their opponents in the Clark and Heinze camp were just as biased in their comments on my book.

Kaolin deposits of Patagonia (Argentina) were formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rocks or by erosion, transportation, and deposition of residual clays in small basins. The mineralogy, geochemistry, grain size distribution, and specific surface area of natural and washed kaolins were studied in order to point out the relationships with the ceramic process. Primary kaolins are coarse-grained, kaolinite+quartz±halloysite, with a very low specific surface area. Sedimentary clays are either kaolinitic?smectitic and very fine-grained or kaolinitic with a coarser particle size distribution. An interdependence between mineralogy, chemistry, particle size distribution, texture, surface activity and ceramic behavior was found. Plasticity is strictly dependent on surface activity and expandable clay minerals. Slip rheology is affected by soluble salts, smectite, and tubular halloysite. Kaolinite-halloysite play an opposite role versus smectite-I/S in slip casting and tile pressing. Kaolinite and quartz are beneficial for drying behavior while expandable clay minerals increase drying sensitivity. Firing behaviour is mainly affected by minor components supplying fluxing oxides.

Experimental apparatus for the determination of powder wettability is described. The principle of the technique is based on the measurement of the equilibrium capillary pressure in a packed bed of particles. Both the macroscopic solid-solution-vapour contact angle, e, and the specific surface area, A(m2g-1), of the powder, can be obtained. Experiments on angular quartz particles have been performed. A wide range of situations have been covered: hydrophobic and hydrophobic particles wetted with water, a variety of organic liquids and solutions of surfactants. The results show that reliable and reproducible values for 0 and A for angular and relatively coarse powders can be obtained with the proposed equipment for advancing liquid fronts in the absence of soluble surfactants. In the latter case and for receding liquid fronts in general, only qualitative trends have been obtained.
